    I turned my filter back on today after being turned off for an unknown period of time. his could have flooded the tank with ammonia or bacteria, but I got lucky and the flow had only been stopped for a few hours.

    Thanks for sharing Dan. It just shows it can happen to the best of us and you saved it. Hopefully it'll help somebody not do the same later 🤞🌱🐟🌿💚

    I did the same thing but worse! Mine smelled of death so we immediately did a large water change and another one two days later. Finally the stench was gone thank goodness we acted fast and didn’t loose any cichlids.

    D'oh! 😁 That tops the time I switched an internal filter over and left the new media in the plastic bag (I only realised what I'd done when I saw the cartridge with the seasoned media sitting next to my aquarium!) 🙊
    Glad all is back to normal now. 😊

    I hear you about foul water.. I had an FX5/FX6 and FX4 running and switched over to sumps. Anyway, I cleaned the FX4 and FX6 but forgot to clean the FX5 for couple months. The garage was stinking to #%@&!!!! and then I realized why.. Also on a sidenote, The way that newer people will bring up the " DIRTY LOOKING WATER " because of the misconception that if aquarium water isnt pool looking, its bad. Water like yours, thats tan and tea colored is so much more natural and healthy, to me. We have very similar looking water tint.. My water tests are spot on healthy, for my Southies.. I did have Mbuna for several years, and the water was so clear, it was very hard to even see there was water. I understand both frames of thought.. Thanks for sharing the stink ! Always good content..

    You need another power head of a bigger one. I'd get a second one and aim it right at the trapping area(s). Place the air stone in one of the dead trapping areas too.

    To protect the intake, build a plastic box out of solid plastic and crazy glue. Open on the bottom and top, and dig out all the substrate around the intake mesh. Make the box an inch taller than the substrate, and as square as it is tallThat should help prevent the substrate clogging the intake. Or you can remove some of the substrate from all of the tank.

    Since the filter has the denitrfying bacteria, why would there be an ammonia or nitrites build up? Also what would cause the ph to become acidic in the filter?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  Před 4 lety

      There's no denitrifying bacteria in a filter.
      If the filter is left off too long, the bacteria dies. When you have organic material (bacteria) decomposing, it produces ammonia. Anaerobic water becomes acidic.

    great video Dan....stinks when this happens.....we've had our HOB do this when we have had power outages but only like 2 or 3 times....luckily I work from home so I catch it and can just get em going right away again....we have never had many power outages luckily and they never last long....have a great evening and good luck man

      First "thought out" tank. I'd been keeping fish a couple years by the time I did this. A few 10 or 20 gallon tanks, slapped together on a whim. I spent time on this one.

    Pre-filter sponges are a wonderful thing if a bit of a pain to keep clean if its a fine one. Also you can sometimes shorten the length of the intake if its too long

    All water in a setting canister needs a water change, up to 80%-90%. depending on the ammonia amount. .25 PPM do a 50% change.

    Very practical & useful information. Thanks for posting. This happened to me one time as well because of a clogged pre-filter intake sponge. I did a larger water change, & that seemed to prevent any issues from the released cloudy water. I know what you mean regarding having many plants in an aquarium too; it can sometimes limit flow & clean-ability of the tank. Good video. 📺👍😎

    I’ve had my 40 gallon long white cloud tank running for 4 years, never done a water change, only top ups. Heavily planted, no filter, no heater, 30 white clouds been in there for the 4 years it’s been running. They spawn but the tons of animo shrimp pick off most of the fry. Some tanks just run themselves.

    I somehow achieved a total nitrogen cycle with living sand. I did my first water change yesterday but did not vacuum the sand really deep, just the superficial poop, detritus and 20% of the water.
    Do I still need to do water changes with 0 nitrates?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  Před 4 lety +1

      I'd still do them at least occasionally. Fish hormones and bacteria will build up, plus the pH drops over time, etc... There's more to water changes than just removing nitrates.

    Whoa whoa whoa whoa....whoa. what do your test strips read? Water is already mixed, so... I don't think I would have done a water change for that reason. Because you needed to do one and a mistake happened. Ok.
    But why not just change out your mechanical filter and let that tiny bit of ammonia feed the plants and bacteria?
