And when I started watching it, I felt wierd and asked, has this guy changed his tone of narration and all his theme? Then, I checked the date, it was 2014. WoW!

I'm actually tempted to buy a 14" 1080p IPS panel and suitable controller from ebay purely for this idea as I like smaller screens with a really high pixel density for console gaming. they simply look sharper than the larger screens where you can see the individual pixels.
great video by the way, you've gained yourself a subscriber :D

  • @jeremyandrews3292

Interesting project. The only real problem is that the controller boards tend to be pricy, and laptop screens tend to run small. This is a great project to save a screen you might use in a portable device or don't want to toss out for sentimental reasons, but if you genuinely need a monitor, then just buy one preassembled because it's not that much more expensive than buying a controller board.
And honestly, even if you want to work with bare panels and find preassembled monitors unsuited to your application, you can probably buy a nicer LCD than what was in your old laptop for very little money, relatively speaking. There's a huge variety of LCD panels out there... once you start looking at them, you'll start imagining all kinds of projects. For instance, I want a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor, but they don't make many of them anymore (outside of medical imaging applications), although 4:3 panels are much easier to find than 4:3 monitors.

tip: of you keep the input/ output board inside and get the shortest extender for the vga and dvi and run it to the side of the case, you can input both of those signals. get a raspberry pi and put it inside, run the usb and Ethernet to the side, and reposition the turn on off switch to a place easily accessible. then connect the hdmi to the raspberry pi and then the input on the controller. bam, you have made a raspberry pi screen and computer with 2 extra inputs.

its the same laptop I have its a compaq 615 the 615 models look exactly the same ik this as I know the laptop very well my one has Amd radeon HD Gpu and a terrbly slow (like a pentium 1) amd sempron si-42 and 2gb of slow ddr2 ram was rarther fast in 2010 when I got it new then broke the screen waited 4 years to get a new on as I wasnt allowed got it repaired the laptop was very very very slow and was not even able to load any aplications on windows 7 pro sp1 and the keyboard was broken I would upgrade it to faster 8gb but cost £120 FOR DDR2 and then upgrading to a crappy duel core cpu if I was able to get even better cpu and more faster ram that was ddr3 I would use it more than my lenovo thinkpad t410 with a i7 640m intel hd1000 and 8gb ddr3 ram the only reason why is that it has a dedicated Gpu. but is not worth it as its over priced for the ram and as it can only have amd it will be shitty.

+Animiles I have a lenovo thinkpad t410 which was made in late 2010. it still works it has a i7 640m 8gb ddr3 ram and crappy modded intel graphics, it is over 5 years opd and runs like new still.

+johnabuick true it pisses me off as they have a 256mb gpu and a shitty sempron si-42 which is like pentium 2 on windows 7 you should look at a vid. this why I go for intel now they dont let me down except the celerons allways get intel.

Having done this project myself to construct a more durable monitor for a child's computer, just a suggestion for Scott, or anyone else trying to fab with acrylic/lexan: score and snap is an easier and cleaner technique for those of us without a table or bench saw. Then use a heat gun, a lighter, or a butane torch to lightly melt the edge to a smooth surface. You can also use heat to refinish the Dremel cuts (post sanding) or drilled holes as well.
Score/snap won't help with the cutout for the speaker connectors, but everything else is easier. It's also nicer to work with if you wish to reshape the edge of the plastic, as the edge is consistent across the entire cut, rather than dealing with slight variations from the Dremel path. And if you wish to paint or wrap the enclosure, the extra smoothness increases the overall finish.

Hey there, awesome idea! I decided to make one too with my old dell laptop, which has a nice lcd screen. After ordering the new driver board for the lcd screen and some weeks later I was finally able to try this out. I connected the lcd to the driver board, and the driver board to my laptop. Everything worked perfectly fine so I decided to place the screen at a better place. After plugging all the cables in again the screen started to turn on and of, it's like a sharp white color for a really short amount, than it turns black, a few seconds later it does the same. this just continues. When I press the menu button and the screen blinks white, I can see the little menu popup. Sometimes when I try it again the screen works just fine, but most of the time it just starts blinking and blinking and blinking.... I really have no clue what's wrong. Is there anybody who can help me?
