Having a second monitor for your PC is really helpful sometimes. In this video I will turn the LCD Screen of a broken laptop into a nice looking second monitor for your PC, gaming console or raspberry pi. - Věda a technologie
CZcams recommended me this 5 years after oroginal upload date, Today.
And when I started watching it, I felt wierd and asked, has this guy changed his tone of narration and all his theme? Then, I checked the date, it was 2014. WoW!
Same, youtube just recommended it today. I already saw this but that was obviously awhile ago.
Same only to day
Same as well
CZcams is great a suggesting old videos. This one as well as some as old as 11 years.
Same!
I usualy end up having working laptops with broken screens.
Same.
Banch same, 10 min job to replace though :)

Amazing tutorial thank
you this is the only decent tutorial that I could find on the internet and I was almost about to just give up on my laptop screen! I've had it just lying in my room for so long so thank you.
I'm actually tempted to buy a 14" 1080p IPS panel and suitable controller from ebay purely for this idea as I like smaller screens with a really high pixel density for console gaming. they simply look sharper than the larger screens where you can see the individual pixels.
great video by the way, you've gained yourself a subscriber :D
Ppl are going back to used high quality crt monitors because of this.
What about 4K panels
Awesome Scott!!! You never cease to amaze me with the cool projects you show us! Can't wait to do this! Thanks!
Interesting project. The only real problem is that the controller boards tend to be pricy, and laptop screens tend to run small. This is a great project to save a screen you might use in a portable device or don't want to toss out for sentimental reasons, but if you genuinely need a monitor, then just buy one preassembled because it's not that much more expensive than buying a controller board.
And honestly, even if you want to work with bare panels and find preassembled monitors unsuited to your application, you can probably buy a nicer LCD than what was in your old laptop for very little money, relatively speaking. There's a huge variety of LCD panels out there... once you start looking at them, you'll start imagining all kinds of projects. For instance, I want a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor, but they don't make many of them anymore (outside of medical imaging applications), although 4:3 panels are much easier to find than 4:3 monitors.
wow so far one of the best work i have seen with this controller boards
Thank you very much, I contacted the seller and purchased my own board along with the power supply. They were very helpful. Cheers!
This is just the kind of tutorial I've been looking for!
Thank You brilliant idea I was just getting ready to throw out to my old laptop but then I saw this video I'm going to repurpose it
This is exactly the kind of project that I was looking to do for one of my future projects. This stuff is awesome!
Always clean and tidy videos. Nice job Scott.
perfect just the project i need for my broken laptop
Wow! you made that look easy. Inspiring! Thank you.
looking forward to this. Checking on compatibility for my screen now
Hello! I'm not often leaving comments but here I have to :) dear Scott, you're channel is piece of very good work. Watching it brings me joy, and it lights up my creativity. I get here by accident(searching for that video controller), and now I'm watching all the stuff now. Regards and thanks for you're content.
Thank you Scott, great instructable, this will be of great help for when I build my Raspberry PI laptop, regards Doc Cox
hey! could you do more vids of reusing a broken/old laptop?
yes!
No!
SSDH no, yes!
Watch DIY Perks he has great videos on topic.
LUV it! Low cost, functional, simple! My 3 fave things! PLUS I'd have to guess MOST peop already have old broken laptops that still have perfectly working monitors! Excellent 2nd monitor option!! Really like the 6-12 volt power too! Makes it very mobile!
This is the second best video I've seen on CZcams
great information man! I'm quite impressed! thanks a million, brother!
Always good to watch this guy! If you made an app with your voice for
Google maps I will buy it. No! No, you go too far!
Now make U-turn at 💡
Update for 2018 :
The seller is still great, and Scott's video is working perfectly, they just take some time for the delivery process (mine took 3 weeks)
Wow! Never even thought about doing this! I knew subscribing to your channel would give me too many ideas to stay out of trouble!
I might combine this with the DIY Portable Mini Monitor in your previous video!
i am writing this on my 2nd display! thanks for the idea scott
You're welcome ;-)
Excellent, I was trying to figure out how to reuse an old broken down laptop,n Great work and great ideas, thanks for the video.
perfect video my friend! I think you should make a video, showing others, how to make DIY videos!! thank you for making the effort to edit, to make it so clear and easy to watch!!! I'll be doing this project right away. thank you again!
tip: of you keep the input/ output board inside and get the shortest extender for the vga and dvi and run it to the side of the case, you can input both of those signals. get a raspberry pi and put it inside, run the usb and Ethernet to the side, and reposition the turn on off switch to a place easily accessible. then connect the hdmi to the raspberry pi and then the input on the controller. bam, you have made a raspberry pi screen and computer with 2 extra inputs.
Like other people, I mostly get laptops without a screen but this is still interesting. What I would like to see is projects showing how to reuse the LCD displays (including touch LCD displays from printers like Canon, HP, etc. Would that be possible, please?
That is genius!I've got a couple of scrap laptops and now I know what to use them for! Thanks! Subscribed!
Nice work. I'm working on almost the exact same project. Thanks for your tips and tricks.
Somehow...this video inspired me to repair my old screen...but i fucked up and now its completely broken...so sad xd
hahaha i do the same but i destroyed it
But hey, at least you tried ;)
you learn from your mistakes :)
Thats true, but anyway, i gave the screen to a pro and he told me that i wouldnt have been able to fix the screen without proper knowledge
TheWuerstchenwasser
You get proper knowledge after breaking so much, kind of like games.. you break something and get experience until you are ready enough to break stronger and better things xD
i would have added internal speakers along the front under neath the lcd panel like it has a built in speaker bar and a back to it but thats a good job
Now I have a use for my pile of old laptops! Thank you so much!
Thats an absolutly great idea and project of you,
i like it
well NOW I find this video! I just took my old lap top to the gun range and put a bunch of holes in it! I could seriously use extra screens for, well, everything, no idea it could be so easy to harvest old lap top screens. To be fair however, It was IMMENSELY satisfying to put a bunch of 45 caliber holes in the lap top that caused so much frustration :-)
That laptop will be missed...
Craigslist...You can get a bunch for free, or cheaper than all the materials for this. Lol but this video helped me a lot, I didn't know they had these. now I can test customer's lcds without jumping to conclusions.
Right on!
nambinhvu true solution..lo
Adventures with Jim LoL
That's great, now I can create a screen out of an old laptop for my RPi2!
Mike Kapotsy hey how's ur project with ur RPi2?
Vennel Llagas Unfortunately the power supply I ordered for the laptop screen didn't work and I've no time to pursue it further.
Would love to see this in array... Pretty neat job you've done there.
this is perfect! I've had a monitor from a laptop I ripped apart and wanted to use it but didn't have the chance
Dayum, you made a TV from scratch. Great, Scott.
Not really from scratch. He just assembled the parts together. It's like building a pc.
Instead of buying a €37 controller from ebay just buy a used €25 LCD monitor for desktop PCs which has a controller built in. Then you can tear that down and you have a screen and its controller.
Yeah but what if you need speaker output as well?
I agree with you to a point, but if you happen to have a dead laptop lying around with a screen that still works and like diy projects, this is a well suited video. kind of a "waste not want not" kind of a thing.
Why are we tearing a monitor apart to make a monitor again?
@@robertkubrick3738 If you wanna install it into some custom project of yours I dunno?
Any who, what I said still holds true though. Makes more sense to not buy an expensive controller for 37 bucks when one cna be found with a monitoir for much less.
@@Macatho Why biuy a controller and why buy a a monitor just to tear it apart? Why take something usable and functioning and tear it apart so you can use it for the same function it was already capable of? Not a big fan of Rasberry pie either, it's less capable than my cheap laptop that already has a display.
The perfect solution to get a second display when on a low budget. Thank you very much for this video. :D
That was awesome! Thank you for creating this beautiful youtube channel. I watched all your videos and i appreciate your effort very much.
+Alfredo1987a You're welcome
This guy kinda sounds like the spongebob time cards person. (Where it’s like “A few hours later”)
Amazing work, mate. You can charge my flux capacitor any day.
riKringkast that's a lot of gigawatts
+PROTOMAN247 No it's not a _lot_ of gigawatts, it's not even _2_ gigawatts, it's only 1.21 (one point twenty-one) gigawatts!
Max Brewster you must be fun at parties
actually, in industry it would be expressed as "one point two one"
@@maxbrewster245 true, it's a lot of watts but not a lot of gigawatts. Like your mom weighs a lot of kilograms but only a few tonnes
Nice, I kept two of those taken off old Windows 7 and XP laptops. Thx for the useful video :D
Wow, this seems a lot simpler than I thought it was going to be. Might just have to scrounge up an old laptop or two; I've been in need of some dedicated displays for my projects.
it would be really cool to set it into the wall I think
Would this be possible to do with a smartphone LCD? I have a Nexus 4 that's completely tanked, but the screen is still good. Would make a great portable test monitor.
This is my favorite video of yours. I love it.
i did this and now i have a 3 screen setup :) Thanks scott, watch al your vids, keep it going :)
just realized that you must be german XD
the ruler gave a hint, but anyways, your accent and stuff.
nice video and cool channel!
Alex Trusk he is probaly dutch
"pretty simple right?" nah for me its rocket science
Dasisgud It really is simple.
Caleb Sherman agreed
He just said "FOR HIM" its rocket science, simple for you guys but "FOR HIM" it isn't.
So... what are you doing here?
At least you didn’t have to program anything 😆
I give you 2 thumbs up! One on your #shorts video and one on this video simply because you included a link to the full video in your #shorts description! I wish more #shorts videos would include links in their #shorts videos. Thank you! and well done.
Woww this was a really really cool project. A little to advanced for me at the moment but i do want to do this some day. Much love from. NY. USA
you're awesome mate !! why isn't your channel verified yet?
+Sayyad Mubassir Ikram I have no idea how to do that.
+GreatScott! I think you have to pay to do that.
+GreatScott! Ask it at CZcams

This would be awesome for 3 monitor setup. Find 3 identical old laptops with nice resolution, take the lcd's, make custom case for it and viola :D
Dino Sabanovic Was thinking of doing this myself, ive got 4 identical 1920x1080 laptop lcd screens and I was going to build a frame to hold all 4. Would be very thin and I could have a box that all the wires lead to going into a controller and tada, done :P
Snipe Camp how can you connect multiple screens to one controller board? or would you use one for each screen? it would be awesome to have one power supply for all the screens
I think he means one for each screen.
Oh okay. Would any of you know if its possible to make multiple power up by one?
+mojito shake you can connect multiple screens to one board, but it will just duplicate screens.
I done this stuff when I was a kid, really cool I love it
Wow, this is an old one! I think this might’ve been the video that I found your channel by actually!
What about reusing tiny lcds like phone screens and old baby monitors
Sadly I have more broken screens with working laptops than the other way around.
Zabeus Oh well, XD
Zabeus use them as a Teamspeak server :D
Zabeus Same fucking problem here, cracked screen and perfectly working laptop!!
just hook the laptops to the TV you get a powerful media center
If you can follow a youtube instruction, order your screen and replace it yourself for under $100 (depending on your model of course).
Thanks for mentioning *csmqshop* ! ^_^ I've received a Controller Board, purchased through their eBay shop, for my B133HTN01.1 LCD panel. And it worked right out of the box. 👍 I tested it with my Super Nintendo Mini attached to the HDMI port.
Scott, you are amazing! I love your videos :)
Great video, do you have a ebay store to sell your builds? Thanks.
"It's time to put all this crap together" But thanks dude i have a couple of these sitting around, and they're thin enough to set into the drywall as a sick monitor!
Dude that would look frigging awesome. If only I can see the finished results :/
Have been looking for a video like this!! Thanks a lot.
I love you Channel I thought I was subscribed a long time ago I just resubscribed you do great work great Scott I love you are electronic basic videos explains a lot
I saw the title and thought, hey I have one of those. When I click on the video I see that it is the same laptop! What are the odds ;)
its the same laptop I have its a compaq 615 the 615 models look exactly the same ik this as I know the laptop very well my one has Amd radeon HD Gpu and a terrbly slow (like a pentium 1) amd sempron si-42 and 2gb of slow ddr2 ram was rarther fast in 2010 when I got it new then broke the screen waited 4 years to get a new on as I wasnt allowed got it repaired the laptop was very very very slow and was not even able to load any aplications on windows 7 pro sp1 and the keyboard was broken I would upgrade it to faster 8gb but cost £120 FOR DDR2 and then upgrading to a crappy duel core cpu if I was able to get even better cpu and more faster ram that was ddr3 I would use it more than my lenovo thinkpad t410 with a i7 640m intel hd1000 and 8gb ddr3 ram the only reason why is that it has a dedicated Gpu. but is not worth it as its over priced for the ram and as it can only have amd it will be shitty.
+Sam “Sam” Sam The odds are pretty high cause those HP/Compaq laptops are total crap in the processor dept. I bought one for my daughter and it only lasted a couple of years, even put a new processor in it but no good.
+Animiles I have a lenovo thinkpad t410 which was made in late 2010. it still works it has a i7 640m 8gb ddr3 ram and crappy modded intel graphics, it is over 5 years opd and runs like new still.
+johnabuick true it pisses me off as they have a 256mb gpu and a shitty sempron si-42 which is like pentium 2 on windows 7 you should look at a vid. this why I go for intel now they dont let me down except the celerons allways get intel.
Sam Sam maybe they were deffective I also have the same laptop that stopped working.
When glueing acrylic..... Methylene chloride is your best friend ;) I make fish tanks with it
This project is awesome, think I will have a try at this one!
Great tutorial! Love the way you talk. ( "then we glue all this crap together") exactly how I think !
Thank you! Now I can DIY a car DVD player without having to pay for crap prices.
Says LCD screen from old laptops....
*Unscrews the laptop newer than which I am watching this video on*
Need to look into doing this for a car-puter but be nice to find a trackball you can use on a shifter knob or touch pad to mount on the center console.
Having done this project myself to construct a more durable monitor for a child's computer, just a suggestion for Scott, or anyone else trying to fab with acrylic/lexan: score and snap is an easier and cleaner technique for those of us without a table or bench saw. Then use a heat gun, a lighter, or a butane torch to lightly melt the edge to a smooth surface. You can also use heat to refinish the Dremel cuts (post sanding) or drilled holes as well.
Score/snap won't help with the cutout for the speaker connectors, but everything else is easier. It's also nicer to work with if you wish to reshape the edge of the plastic, as the edge is consistent across the entire cut, rather than dealing with slight variations from the Dremel path. And if you wish to paint or wrap the enclosure, the extra smoothness increases the overall finish.
add a rgb light on the inside
Instead of that huge speaker connector you could instead use a headphone jack instead with an adaptor cable.
You just said instead 3 times in one sentence!
TrueGamerGR LOL!
nop headphone jack isnt amplified
***** No, I mean wire it in...it would handle the voltage just fine.
Jay Simons I agree. It's more practical and low profile.
Surprisingly, my model number matches yours!
Plus, you can make a laptop using a smart phone connected by an USB type C to HDMI dongle, add a battery, speakers, and a nice enclosure, and suddenly you have a surprisingly good laptop!
I hadn't even thought about laptop displays as generic parts. And here I have a small stack of scraptops in the closet. Thanks for the weekend project!
Hey there, awesome idea! I decided to make one too with my old dell laptop, which has a nice lcd screen. After ordering the new driver board for the lcd screen and some weeks later I was finally able to try this out. I connected the lcd to the driver board, and the driver board to my laptop. Everything worked perfectly fine so I decided to place the screen at a better place. After plugging all the cables in again the screen started to turn on and of, it's like a sharp white color for a really short amount, than it turns black, a few seconds later it does the same. this just continues. When I press the menu button and the screen blinks white, I can see the little menu popup. Sometimes when I try it again the screen works just fine, but most of the time it just starts blinking and blinking and blinking.... I really have no clue what's wrong. Is there anybody who can help me?
hi , its hard to get the controller from the inter net
so how i can take it of from the laptop
i live in Gaza strip , its hard to get these things over the internet
help
thanx
blackice273 It's probably integrated into the motherboard :'(
+blackice273 no hope bro. comething as complicated as a computer motherboard... no hope
+blackice273 You have to remove the components from the motherboard and make your own schematic. Good luck with that. :)
Not impossible but very hard
Smooth and easy explanation - thanks!
That backlit look it gets is perfect
um i have a question ... where can i get a power supply for the controller board?
ebay, electronic hobbyist stores. Just make sure you find out what the power needs are.
thank you
So you still have to buy extra parts for this? That sucks. Only reason I came here was to find out if I could make a cheap monitor instead of having to buy one.
If the old laptop was 1080p then it will be cheaper than a new monitor. Maybe not as pretty though...
yeah that is what i was thinking most of the time it's cheaper to get a new screen. this world is fucked up...
This but covering an entire wall
The most useful video i've ever seen
Nice Build !!! nice recycling project
Is it just me or was your English better in 2014?
Anyway, thanks for this great video.
Yeah, I keep a car battery conveniently next to the 12v power supply in my desktop.
what a nice project! I may actually do it for fun!
Thank you!
I have two laptop laying around since ages and I didn't know what to do with htem. No I have two TFT monitors for "free" thanks to you!
I think you can put raspberry pi inside of that broken laptop and make it them like brand new laptop. What do you say?
no
gagamin2 yes, that is a good idea!
Do you even Linux Mint bro?
You can use Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ with this setup as a media display/media PC/etc box.
Put a giant touchscreen covering on it and a rasp/banana pi inside for a gigantic tablet. :)
Daniel Astbury -_- -__- -__________________________________________-
Did you honestly just say a giant touchscreen COVERING? No words. No words.
What do you mean, there are such things as touch screen covers.
Andloo Yunty Virender Sehwag Search for touch screen panel.
Daniel Astbury You really aren't the brightest are you?
Andloo Yunty So what he didn't use the right word. You can make a screen into a touchscreen using some products, and that's probably what he's talking about.
Great video Scott.
Great project! I just salvaged an old LCD screen from a computer I disassembled and I'm hoping to make something super sci-fi from it. I might make a video about that soon...
hmm... i may take apart my old screen and make my ps4 into a laptop... I wonder what resolution it is...
1360x768 most likely
+MutantKrill *1366. 1360 hasn't been standard since the days of Vista.
ThereIsNoMatch this is an old screen, the max migh be 1200 something, not sure though cause my old pc couldn't max it out anyway
the only issue doing this is that is expensive, to get a tiny 13" old screen from a laptop the controller is also expensive is a better deal to just buy an used monitor than do this.
In life you have choices. You can sit back and admire something YOU made or something someone else made. Up to you. It's not always about what is cheaper unless, of course, that is all you care about....
Thank you, this very cool film helps me with my old stuff.
great idea and thanks for sharing the process.
