  • One of the best parts of collecting - regardless of what it is that you collect - is the people you have a chance to meet who share your interests and are often the fonts of knowledge on the subject. Such was the case earlier this year, when I had the great pleasure to meet up with some vintage electric fan collectors: Todd, Ray and Steve. We had so much fun talking about fans, appliances and all things vintage. I've often said it: "Collecting is connecting!"
    Recently, Steve was bidding on fan that was included in a entire lot, where you have to take a number of items in addition to the thing you actually want. Happy to say he had the winning bid, and included in the lot was a very beat-up, neglected old Sunkist commercial juicer. Steve put his incredible restoration and repair talents to work on this old appliance and brought it back to top-notch working order and appearance! The transformation was incredible! He donated this beautiful appliance to the Cavalcade collection, and I couldn't wait to try it (I told you I'd be putting it to the test, Steve!). Here it is making orange juice faster than you can slice the oranges! THANK YOU SO MUCH, Steve!

    I remember my mom buying Valencia oranges because they were cheaper than the navel ones. My little brother and I would quarter them, sing a made up song and eat them in front of the TV. How I wish I had a Valencia tree now.

    I have a vintage Proctor - Silex citrus juicer that I found abt. five years ago at a 2nd hand shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. My juicer at the time had stopped working and I needed a new one. Ordered a couple off of Amazon and returned them both. Plus shopped local department stores. Never did find a new juicer that I liked or respected. Especially w/ the outrageous prices they are asking in the 21st century. After much patience, I eventually found my P - S in a charity shop, and have been using it ever since! It did not come w/ a shield, and doesn't seem to need one. Made in the USA, but I don't see a date on it. I'm a new subscriber and appreciate your approach to vintage.

      Hi DSR - glad you found a good Proctor Silex juicer in your local thrift shop! P.S. made a lot of juicers, and I have a few in the collection. They are well made and it should last you a long time! Thanks for watching!

    Hi Kevin and Ralph! What a wonderful, generous gift!! My first summer job was in 1974 when I was 15. I was a hostess at an International House of Pancakes in Dallas, Texas. But I can't remember if we used one of these. I can remember having to clean that stinking restaurant every night I worked after closing because there was pancake syrup literally on every surface imaginable! But I don't remember who or how juice was handled. I remember serving it, but I think there was a dispenser for it and milk. Regardless, your talk about the commercial uses of your Sunkist juicer made me think about those times. I learned a lot about life and myself that summer. Thanks for the memories, fellas!! Have a lovely holiday season!

      Hi Nancy!! Thanks so much for sharing your story! I haven't been in an IHOP in many years! There is a local pancake house chain here in the Detroit area that serves fresh squeezed OJ - and they sell a lot of it! LOL! I can imagine how there was syrup on everything! What a mess to clean up! The lessons we learn when we enter the workforce! Have a very Merry Christmas!!

    Merry Christmas Kevin, Ralph, and Mary. Love this. In the old days in south Florida where they grew so many oranges, every restaurant served fresh squeezed OJ, road side fruit stands did too. Loving vintage stuff brought me to the Cavalcade many years ago.

    I remember orange juice (or any citrus juice) always being served and depicted in a relatively small glass, and usually accompanied by a "primary" beverage if with a meal like breakfast. Sometime in the early 90's, I recall an advertising campaign with the slogan "orange juice is good for you, have a big glass!" and assume that's when the growers association(s) started getting folks to embiggen their portions to help increase sales.

    • @russbear31
      @russbear31 Před 6 měsíci +4

      Seriously, you should only drink small glasses of juices. (Grandma knew best.) Most fruit juices are loaded with enough sugar to kill a horse. They actually make Coke and Pepsi look like a health food. 😅 People make the mistake of thinking that because it's made from oranges or other fruits that it's automatically "healthy" and they drink it by the gallons. 😅

      @@russbear31 Industry sales targets/initiatives don't always align with consumers' best interests. Trade groups are always in battle with one another. For example, they sure did a good job of convincing people that fats were the problem for a long time when it was carbs all along.

      Hi Marc - the giant juice portions are another example of how certain industries use advertising and promotion to increase consumption of their product, whether it's good for you or not. A five or six ounce juice glass is about all you should consume at a meal. The amount of sugars in these juices is enormous. Thanks!

    Juice looks delicious. Here in the UK a small glass of chilled orange or grapefruit juice was often served as a starter. It's a good way of sharpening the appetite.

    A pretty amazing machine they don' make them like that anymore. The powerful motor is worth its weight in gold. Saying that, people knew way back when that juice should be consumed in small quantities hence the small juice glasses. Somewhere in the 1960's the idea came along that more equals better but we know better now. Fruit juices are actually NOT healthy to consume due to the fructose. The old saying to "eat an orange" with all its fiber slows the digestion of the fructose. When people consume a large portion of juice these days, they are consuming several oranges worth of juice. Sugar/carbs is what makes people gain weight. Consuming fat actually makes a person healthy and normal weight. Juices should only be consumed as a rare treat. As always, I enjoy the story behind the appliances that you showcase and appreciate the fact that these machines were built to last a lifetime, your ranges included.

    • @cavalcadeoffood
      @cavalcadeoffood  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks, kennixox! You are right about the size of juice portions. They used to be quite small, just a few ounces. That is fine to have from time to time. Fresh squeezed juice is a real treat. All our portions have become enormous, which is one of the reasons we have struggles with weight and other health issues. Thanks!

    Kevin, you are so right about juice oranges being better. I used to make spiced tea every Christmas and it called for the juice of 6 oranges. It was hard to find juice oranges even then, and they were a whole lot juicier. I used a 1940s Sunbeam Mixmaster with a juicer attachment that was quite powerful and would zip through them in no time. Lemons too. The hard part to find on those is the tin strainer that hangs off the spout. Thanks for showing us your beautiful Sunkist commercial juicer. Nothing like fresh squeezed.

    What a wonderful gift!
    I remembered this episode after I talked to my daughter in San Antonio recently. She bought oranges on sale and was so excited about them... until she tried to eat one!
    She said that they didn't look very appetizing and were extremely mushy... the worst eating orange she had ever bought!
    But she then noticed that they were "juicing" oranges!
    She had no idea that there was such a thing, but thanks to Cavalcade of Food, I was in the know!!
    I don't know if I've even seen juicing specific oranges at my local grocery store here in Minnesota, but they are prevalent in Texas.
    So anyway... now I know there's a difference!!
    Take care.

    • @cavalcadeoffood
      @cavalcadeoffood  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi Greg! Glad you knew what was going on with those oranges your daughter bought! We rarely see juicing oranges here in Michigan, although they were more available years ago when more people still had fresh squeezed juice on a regular basis. They are softer and pulpier than an eating orange because they have so much more water/juice in them. This heavy duty Sunkist juice would of made quick work of those oranges! Thanks!!

    Hi Kevin and Ralph! Thank you for this fantastic presentation of the Sunkist Juicer in action. That thing is a beast! (12 GPM.. zoiks!)
    For the viewers: Thanks so much for the compliments on the restoration! - I'm Steve ; )
    I would offer a, completely unnecessary, tweak to the back story. I do so only to emphasize the point about the wonderful people you meet along the way... I did not need to acquire the juicer as part of a bulk lot (phew). I did spot a fan in an on-line auction that I really wanted to add to my collection. I thought that I would see if there were any other items of interest as the pick-up terms meant an hour and a half drive to retrieve it should I win. I spotted the Sunkist Juicer and immediately thought of Kevin and the Cavalcade.
    I was so fortunate to have had the opportunity to get in on the "fan guys" visit to the Cavalcade that Kevin references. The visit was truly a highlight of my summer!
    The restoration was certainly a challenge. The juicer had clearly seen plenty of use and likely an extended history of "non-prioritized" storage. But hey, the bigger the challenge the bigger the return when it is eventually met. I loved "saving" this piece of super neat industrial design and getting the chance to, again, visit with Kevin at the Cavalcade.
    It really IS about the wonderful people that you meet while sharing these passions... the designs, the histories of the companies that produced them, and the personal memories. My thanks to Todd and Ray for making the initial connection. Until we meet again... Keep on Juicin'!

    What a wonderful juicer. We have a Waring juicer--years ago I accidentally threw out the porcelain reamer--it was replaced by Waring with a plastic one. We have had it since the 1970s and it
    is probably getting tired. It takes some pressure with the fruit half to get the reamer spinning and when it does, it sounds like someone screaming. We are 80 this year and so appreciating your videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you there.

    Nice machine & restoration….on a domestic level the problem with using juicers isn’t the end product of what is being juiced…. (Much of it is wonderful) but it’s the clean up required after using them. Marketing wants everyone to believe in its simplicity but after having had several brands and different kinds over the years, none of them are worth the effort needed in keeping them clean for food/beverage grade consumption….especially if requiring use consistently on a daily basis …I’ll settle for store bought 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Just make sure what you’re buying is grown, made and bottled in the US. Almost all apple juice you can buy here is bottled in the US, but the apples are shipped to China and the juice is made there, then shipped back. The Chinese don’t have the same quality standards we do, so they use even the moldy apples, which can be toxic. I can my own apple juice from apples I grow and juice myself. I can’t grow oranges.

    • @cavalcadeoffood

      Hi Ladythyme! I know what you mean about some juicers being a real pain to clean. I find that the ones that are designed for citrus juicing are the easiest to clean because they just have a reamer and screen. It's the other juicers used for fruits and vegetables that have a lot of parts requiring clean up. Thanks!
