  • Drop Step:
    The drop step is a fundamental movement used in various grappling arts (including wrestling and jiu-jitsu) for the purposes of initiating a takedown from a distance (particularly for double-leg and single-leg takedowns).
    1. Starting from a fighting stance, bend your knees to lower your level and take a step towards your opponent with your lead foot to close the distance towards him low and fast (make sure to keep your hands up to protect your head for the duration of the technique).
    2. Lower your lead knee forward and to the ground so that it lightly makes contact while keeping your rear leg straight. By now you should be close to your opponent with your lead knee roughly between his two feet.
    3. Wrap your arms around behind your imaginary opponent’s legs (preferably behind both knees) and clasp your hands together.
    4. Drag your rear leg forward and plant your foot (the heel) behind his foot/feet as if to trip him.
    5. Simulate pulling his legs in tight and driving forward with your chest and shoulders while tripping him with your heel as if you were to complete a double-leg takedown.
    6. Stand up and repeat with the other leg forward for the purposes of practice.
