  • This 1960s film titled “Come Sail With Me” acted as recruitment material for the U.S. Navy. It features USS Columbus, CG-12 (formerly CL-74; in this film, she is the refitted Guided Missile Cruiser CG-12). Prepared for The Surface Missile Systems Program Office Bureau of Naval Personnel, this film sought to specifically target men to join the Guided Missile Fleet. The film was produced and directed by Jay Brubaker, details the career of a Naval Officer in the Guided Missile Fleet from the first days of boot camp to specialization training at one of the Navy’s designated training centers and from battle to post-service career opportunities.     This isn't from the 1950s since it shows the USS Long Beach, CGN-9, in a scene and that ship was commissioned into the fleet in the 1961. So this is from the 1960s.

    This video is from the mid-1960s. At 26:41 , the record shown is Louis Armstrong's hit recording of "Hello Dolly". That record was released in 1964. So this film would date from then or later.

    When deployed to the Med in '69, my ship was steaming in formation with the Columbus for a short time; time enough to get some good pictures of her. I was on a DDG at the time.

    I served on USS Leahy CG-16 during the 1980s. Memories. "Guided missile ships that go where the action is." For sure, sailed off Russia, North Korea, China, pirates, and the Persian Gulf!

    What's the difference with some sailors having 3 red chevron stripes on uniforms while others had "slash" stripes...is it the type of work they do?

      slash strips are for E-1 to E-3's, E-4 to E9 have chevrons
