    To put things into perspective for Americans, the UK sits at the same latitude as James Bay in Northern Canada. 41C or 106F in the UK is crazy, especially considering AC is not exactly commonplace for the average UK household.

      It is insanity! I live in South Africa, and 40C would be hot here (it gets to 35C in Summer and is not unusual to reach 40C). The idea of England reaching temperatures on par with Africa is insane!

      Tarmac definitely creates a heat island effect, but that doesn't explain why it's 39+ celcius in other places like Surrey.

      @@greatgatsby513 By that logic it could also have been 5% higher. The equipment used is very sensitive and multiple simultaneous readings corroborate the temperature readings.

      @@samspencer7765 It's not a matter of 'by that logic'. It's not selective. Margins of error are standard practice, whether it fits your narrative or not.
      Records have been recorded using different types and quality of equipment with different calibration tolerances and in different locations over time.
      Thus this inconsistency results in a significant margin of error. They cannot realistically validate their claims of record breaking results.

    And you'd think the acres and acres of pure tarmac , concrete and jet engines constantly blowing hotair everywhere would make Heathrow an unreliable place to measure temperature. I wonder what the temperature was today at fiddler's ferry blast furnace , use that reading next year for an even scarier headline.

      The planes are known to have no effect on the temperature reading. The tarmac does have an effect, and is equivalent to taking the temperature in a built up area. Nearby Kew Gardens records identical temperatures to Heathrow and is not near an airport.

    I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford near Bicester from Jan 87 to Jan 90. The British summers were cold and dreary, we were lucky to get a day that got up to 20 Celsius. I can’t imagine living in the dorms back then with no AC and temperatures over 40 degree. This is global warming on steroids 😱

    Air conditioner is essential for such heat. If millions of A/C installed and used, we need huge amount of power. So more Power stations is needed

    Down in southern Spain we have temps of 40 as a norm in summer and heatwaves of 45. We have 35 out of control fires and thousands dead from the heat. This is the new norm, mother nature is now kicking back after decades of abuse.

      I can easily cope with 40 at Madrid, tube has air con, as all buses and trains, all shops have it as well, we have lots of pools, or we can go to the beach very fast, besides is a dry heat, so much easer to deal with.
      I don't have air con at home, I never had it, I don't think I need it.
      We have made our bodies used to always have a confort temperature, but 500 years ago that was not the case, we were cold at winters and hot at summers.
      Using a motorbike all year round in Madrid makes me extremely tough.
      I have been spending the last 4 winters without heating and summers without air con, and I am still alive. But If I have to say, I rather be in a heat wave than in a blizzard with -20.
      OTOH 34 degrees in Yucatán were hell compared to 42 in Madrid. because the humidity.

      The UK rarely goes above 30, so when it happens people make the absolute most of it. They pull a sicky and go outside during the day to enjoy the weather. A lot of brits would scoff at the idea of staying inside all day during such weather.

      Exactly, Dave also eloquently explained that it's completely normal to record a record-breaking hottest temperature, it happens every year, it just keeps going up, thus establishing a new normal, and hence, everything is normal. "Hottest-day-ever records were always being broken when I woz a lad, that's how I know climate change is fake"

      recordkeeping of temperatures goes back a lot longer than the 1990s and there are references in news papers too speaking of higher temperatures--- if they really wanted to show us that this is just a normal flux of summer heats.       If they're available, heat pumps are a better option. Cool in the summer and heat in the winter at an amazing level of efficiency, making people comfortable and they'll pay much lower energy costs than AC or normal winter heating.

    i see people commenting that we need more AC in the future....yea and warm the climate up some more by using something that takes up so much energy. i dunno what the solution could be without AC though. but it needs to be remembered, AC is not environmentally friendly.

      @@thetrainspotter7 I don't know. I don't know the science behind insulation but I have read that insulation also helps the home not get heated up as fast by the sun. But then it takes longer to get the heat out once it's heated up. Also less insulation also means more energy needed to keep houses warm in the winter. There isn't an easy fix to all these problems it seems.

      @@suzyrottencrotch5132 Did we have peace in Europe? In all seriousness it took about 10 generations to destabilize the whole ecosystem enough to speed natural processes up by much. It's all those small things: carbon emissions, forest cutting, massive desertification, die off in the oceans, man made hole in the atmosphere over ice caps. Will suck for humanity nonetheless. To put it mildly.

      Earth's climate is always changing. We've gone through volcanic infernos then on to ice ages and this will continue until the sun swalows the earth up in millions of years time . The sun is also in the middle of its solar cycle which affects the the earth

    Funny, I remember pavements & roads melting in the heatwaves of the 70's & 80's. None of that this time.

    I was stuck in a prison cell during this heatwave and the temperature was so hot in our cell that our instant coffee melted into sludge, our TV turned off because of the heat and a cup of water evaporated in 2 hours.

      @@mcfch9625 At no point did I say climate change is not a thing (have another read-through), what I am saying is we shouldn't blow things out of proportion, and instead of constantly having a go at the likes of me for driving my 1.5ltr Kuga try to get the likes of China, USA, India, Russia, Japan, Germany to change their ways! The UK is 17th on the list of Co2 emissions per capita according to worldometer... China outstrips everyone by a country mile!
