- HBCUs prepare you to excel in any environment. The message from day one is that you matter in this world and belong in any hall or corridor of power that you choose. As a HBCU graduate, I’ve never had a problem adjusting to any environment. My professors had all been where I wanted to go and knew how to get me there and keep me there. Another benefit of HBCUs: Black professors in every program of study on campus-who’ve made their mark in their respective fields and have come back to show the next generation of Black students how to do the same. I did not truly understand diversity until I attended an HBCU. To be surrounded by the best and brightest young Black minds from all over the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe, is something I will never ever forget. Attending an HBCU is so much more than obtaining a degree, it is to both literally and figuratively join, and continue, a legacy of Black excellence.
"If you can only be tall because someone else is on their knees..." Wow such a great way to look at it
he'll yeah I caught that
Excellent statement..
That just shook me to my foundation. Toni Morrison is amazing.
Toni M. is wisdom personified.
More like, the planet would be better off if whites like you would read a book, open your mind, quit living in fear that your assumed exceptionalism is at risk, and quit thinking that you are the spokespersons for white people. In Layman's terms, you're a fucking racist.
:If you can only be tall, because somebody is on their kness, then you have a serious problem". Exactly.
*****
You Mad....lol
*****
yeah.... you white mad.
*****
Bye Miles p :)
+tis now or never LOL, black women are easily some of the most beautiful beings on this planet who also hold the highest graduation rate from college ...... so what you trying to say? You're a gene mutation with an ego :P
+tis now or never Ironically, you are the epitome of what Toni Morrison brilliantly describes.
God dam... this woman. She blows my mind every time.
I can’t applaud this enough. She was from another dimension. A supreme being.
Amen.
She cuts through White Supremacy with a scalpel.
+Catherine Tansley not really
Deadpool The Valiant lmao.
Catherine Tansley
rofl.
She sure does... and they hate her for it. How dare a black women have such high and mighty view points!? How dare she indeed!
@@AlexRasengan1337 Yes really.
I don't understand the attacking of her to be honest from the comments is it the fact that the oppressors biggest fears are themselves and cannot bear to see their selves for who they truly are.
Malik Jordan that in itself is a racist statement... oh wait black people cant be racist sorry my bad......(bows head in shame of white ancestors)
J MALIK Racist know what they are doing, and we know what will happend to them.
Yes.
It's just like James Baldwin said, once the racism and white supremacy is stripped away they are forced to sit with and confront the pain that caused them to turn to it in the first place.
@@nicholasmaxwell9899 you are engrossed by it, you live it everyday, you're incapable or refuse to even realize the matrix you live in. The simple statement she made, had you so uncomfortable you don't realize you're the person she's talking about. Why is it that when people say racist, you get offended, if you aren't one, then how/why does it hit you in your core? Is it because you feel morally inferior?
the way she stared straight into his soul unshaken, this is what moves me to continue the work she pioneered
Best question: "Give some white advice." Toni Morrison replied, "It's all in my books." LOL I love it!
CINEMATIQmag TV Meaning they were written by someone else. She doesn't know what is in them.
Spirit Splice you have A very very serious problem
+Spirit Splice problem is you're dumber than a day old fart
So you wrote the books are by WHO are you being serious. Because your kind never believe they could be written by a black person. Well everyone comes on social media. Some to display they are empty upstairs. You are one of them.
He said: Them give white people some free advice.
No "some white advice." Wtf is that? Haiahhauaha
She has a high emotional i.q. and great emotional wealth.
she clearly says "they" have a problem and "they" need to figure out what "they" are going to do about it and he still makes it about her..
Charly knows how wrong it is”believe you me”
He can't help.himself. To even acknowledge that it's a white person's responsibility is to acknowledge it's their problem....and that, he can't do.
The people with the negative comments I truly believe she hit a nerve because you know YOU are who she’s referring to. But, I’d rather see your ignorance here instead of you taking out your frustrations on a local Walmart😌 Toni thank you for everything
She is so incredibly clear and I imagine that scares the hell out of people. I'm glad I found this and it is inspiring. I was looking for something else and just happened on this.
'I'm not a victim. I refuse to be one.' Brilliant words!
naturally, a bunch of white people are here, inadvertently proving this woman's point.
002lisamarie smh, Mrs. Morrison's point is proven once more. seek help. bless you.
002lisamarie
002lisamarie
if you live in a country where the majority of your neighboring countries are colonized, you'd be affected in a near identical way. Now, you're playing simple, as if you don't understand how neighboring country's economics affect each other. Asian countries were colonized, but their cultures were not destroyed.
002lisamarie The only African country that wasn't colonized was Ethiopia.
Blastaar7 The only African country that wasn't colonized was Ethiopia.
Rest in power, great lady.
The way she says "bereft"--you know she MEANS what she says. Like she has access to some irrefutable truth. #Love #Her
0:27 "It's a profound neurosis." #word
This interview has changed my life! Rip, beloved Toni Morrison !
"Scientifically there's no such thing as race...so racism without race is a choice. Taught, of course, by those who need it, but still a choice. Folks who practice it would be nothing without it." God Bless The Child.
+Phyllis James oh yeah? i suggest you take that little 'diddy' up with a forensic anthropologist, or any other forensic expert. ahahahahaha!
+kikzit lol how about YOU take up YOUR assumptions with an expert. intro to college anthropology: i as a white woman am more similar in my DNA to a person of a "different race" than i am to another white person. check yourself before you sound off like an idiot.
kenzie donovan Let's not confuse "race" with ethnicity.
There's only one race, can you guess what it is? Anyone
"They're all in my books"...RIP TM
This is a brilliant explanation of racism. She nailed it here. R.I.P.
Toni Morrison [my favorite Novelist] is EPIC; she has a brilliant mind!
"We ['Black' people] must learn to STOP making 'White' Supremacy and 'White' people the central characters of OUR narrative(s)! [TONI MORRISON]'
Peace and love...
Redd Legend PREACH BROTHA!
Agreed. We are much more than a race of people oppressed by white supremacy. We are so much more.
You MUST be Married to one or sleep with em.
Power yet Truthful! I love it! 💪🏽🙏🏽👍🏽❤️
I can listen to this 1000 times.
I've known about Toni all my life...but this right here!!! She is a jewel dropping Beasrs and this clearly puts everything in perspective...Thank You!!!
May this beautiful wise woman rest in power!!!
Such a wonderful explanation of racism. Rest in Power, Toni.
💗RIP💗 Dr.Toni Morrison i love you beautiful lady 💗⚘💗⚘💗⚘💗⚘💗⚘💗⚘💗⚘💗⚘💗
Wow. I've always thought I was alone regarding my views on racism. Even if Toni is only one person who shares it, that's the equivalent of legions in my mind. RIP Sweet mother of divine wisdom ❤
I'm from the UK even some poor white people being racist its like black people are a crutch to them so there's always someone below them, it's like if they take their hatred away all they have left is pain
@@tiago7160 I agree with you. It's the same here. Whites will say "yea I'm poor, but at least im not poor and black. "Sadly I feel that racism has become such a deep part of identity in some that they'd feel lost without it. Entire societies and cultures have been created around racism. Same goes with oppression in blacks. We have become used to the narrative of being victimized to the point many can't see themselves as anything other than victims. Which is detrimental to one's ability to move forward and progress. I pray for healing on both sides.
I'm shocked I had no idea who this woman was before. I had to read a short story by her, "recitatif", and do a presentation on her and, oh wow I love this woman. Toni is a goddess and she speaks the truth.
Absolutely true statement for many African American families, particularly in the Midwest: Yes, we've always known we have the moral high ground. It's quite plain. And the horror and the shame of the racist is that they know, we know who is morally superior.
To consider oneself superior is actually a serious superiority complex. A complex of any kind is low.
You will never be free if you do not free from your false thoughts.
I watch this video often to be inspired
Thank you, Toni! Rest in power!
I cannot fix a problem I did not create
-James Baldwin
Thank you for sharing this Toni Morrison moment 🕊
“And there you are, all strung out, and all you got is your little self. And what is that? What are you without racism? Are you any good? Are you still strong? Are you still smart? You still like yourself?”
I really needed this today. Ms. Morrison you beautiful human.
The Truth Will Set Us Free!
grayy looks good on her
"And all you got is your lil self" Mic drop
I love this woman! She is so beautiful inside and out. I'm grateful for her powerful words!
This woman is not only an intellectual, she is also a deeply spiritual human being.
I agree with Toni Morrison wholeheartedly......
OMG!!! This just changed my life!!!
A profound neurosis indeed. A very serious problem that ruins so much, in every way.
The interview is, for those curious (like me) from May 1993. See: charlierose.com/videos/18778
You become what you think about the most.
Truely priceless🌹
Amazing. What a gifted woman she is, what a profound thinker. Thank God for Toni Morrison.
I'll admit like all people I do have some implicit bias based on race and other factors. However, this woman has helped me more than anyone deconstruct my own biases enough to look more to the humanity of someone rather than what they look like. I wish she got more recognition than she did in her life to be fully honest. She broke through a huge glass ceiling and she went to the stars with her ability to simply break down racism and cut it at the core. Bless you Ms. Morrison.
Thanks for posting!
this is and will always be my sentiments.....always!
This interview should be a class in school on all grade levels. Beautifully explained.
I could listen to her talk forever
Why today? I cant deal with this right now! Lord, i been a teary eye'd mess all day.
BRILLIANT!!!
I'm reading it now. THE NEW JIM CROW is a very insightful piece of work.
Rest In Power Beloved!!!!
Oh my god, so spot on!
Powerfully stated
Long Live💪🏽Toni Morrison✊🏽🖤👑
Binging on Toni Morrison today...with her beautiful self.
This woman is amazing. Very good.
So incredibly well put.
Wow very thought provoking.
Please come back😢😢
Rest in peace ❤️
YEAAAH....i picked that up instantly too!
rip, sister. charlie's getting his, now. prayers, all around.
DAMN! WOW! PUT IT ON CONTINUOUS PLAY!!!
I believe this wholly!
I like this lady, she speaks sense.
Racism is destructive, and it can take on many forms, however the confusion or misconception that I find often surfaces around thinking about racism, is the single idea that racism simply connotes an interpersonal conflict, rather than a structural and existential construction which at the very core is about POWER. Who has the power to wield multi-dimensional forms of anguish and destruction, material and immaterial, on huge populations and cultures of people? It's not black people.
WOWWWWW 2024. THE PART ABOUT IF YOU CAN ONLY BE TALL WHEN SOMEONE IS THEIR KNEES
Toni is always taking Charlie Rose to school
Absolutely!!!
Rest in power.
Charlie Rose was a good talk show host 📺 and Toni Morrison great observations❗
Great lady. Love Song of Solomon.
my fav book of all time.
rootsroc1 Mine too.
My absolute favorite also. A masterpiece!
Wow!
Moral high ground and superior.
I love her intellect.
Toni Morrison is a Goddess. I love her so much.
He literally asks her for free advice.
(@ Bob).....African Americans also invented the dust pan, the ironing board, the light filament the stoplight, performed the 1st successful heart valve replacement, created the first blood bank, invented laser cataract eye surgery, etc, etc.....in regards to mathematics many BLACK mathematicians have made great modern strides in the areas of.
Yup. Still strong, still smart, still like myself.
Any further questions, mam?
Tell it Sister Morrison!
(Sorry on my iPad...this is a continuation of my comment below) many have made great strides in the areas of differential equations, number theory, topology, and.linear and non-linear programming. So, therefore, yes we understand mathematics, as do I being that I am an assistant professor of mathematics and I am a black woman.

: harmful often in a subtle or unexpected way
I had to look it up
She is deep.
We were the third race in a two-race state. I remember once traveling with my father, and we pulled into a gas station because I had to go to the bathroom and there was one marked “white” and one bathroom marked “colored.” I said, “Dad, what do I do?” - Chief Stephen Adkins (Chickahominy), Style Weekly, September 2004.
Wow that was good!
Smart lady.
Smart person.
IF YOU CAN ONLY BE TALL BECAUSE SOMEBODY IS ON THEIR KNEES, THEN YOU HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
Troubling Indeed.
😍
She said buy my books Wiggas!!
I was raised the same way as she. I have always thought that white people knew that my family and I was morally superior and more witty. That WAS my way of thinking. Don't judge.
Profound truth about the neurosis of racism: Without your racism, "All you got is your little self, and what is that?"
