NYU Steinhardt Jazz Interview Series with Dr. David Schroeder interviews legendary electric bassist, composer, producer and band leader Marcus Miller. November 25, 2016
Marcus is a PHENOMENAL MUSICIAN who happens to be a PHENOMENAL BASSIST!!! A world-class and world-renowned bassist who is intelligent, knowledgeable, cool, and humble!!! His take on fusion and the bassist's responsibility in the band is spot on along with the Steve Gadd experience!!! Thank you for the fantastic and revealing Marcus Miller interview!
This is one of the best interviews I've ever heard with any musician. Marcus is such an engaging speaker, he always seems to find the right examples to illustrate his key points and concepts. I don't know if he teaches, he would be the most amazing teacher.
This was a great interview. It is so obvious that in addition to being a great bass player he is a genius of musicality. AS impressive as that, he is a great communicator and thinker which describes a complete musician. Thanks for bringing his intellect to us.
I could relate to his comments about growing up in a house with a basement. My friends, numerous bands and countless hours of practicing my drums in my parents basement. My parents new where I was most of the time and the neighbors didn’t mind when I had my jazz musician friends over. Great interview
Marcus is my all time bassist and favorite musician. Been a fan for almost 30yrs. His tone and style is legendary. However Marcus is extremely modest...hes definitely apart to the contemporary 80s jazz movement considering his contribution thru bass, producing, composing played a critical role in David Sanborns success and helped reinvent Miles Davis sound introducing him to the younger generation of the 80s.
No, he's not a legend. He's mediocre at best. Anyone with an IQ over 100 and a decent understanding could follow the arc of his life and realise that he's a failure and a loser.
THIS is the best interview of a great musical talent , filled with wisdom , i've ever heard. the only other interview that is quite different but recommended is "The Universal Mind of Bill Evans" But i've never heard so much depth coming from a musician.
Listening and watching this took me through all of the Artist and music I loved growing up. I feel as I've been educated, as I never studied music in a classroom environment.
what a great interview, Marcus is such an inspiration to me, I just love his music, his bass style. I was lucky enough to see him live last year and also was able to meet him too... rob
Probably my favorite musician interview ever. so informative. 2nd time watching & I wasnt trying to. just wanted to send to a friend & make sure it was the right one but so compelling
Don't you just hang every word he says? Just like you hang on every note he plays. He's fenominal. Great sense of humor, and so honest. It's therapeutic to hear him confirm so many things that I always thought. Love you Marcus.✌️
Thanks a lot for posting, i could listen to Marcus for days :)About Wynton Kelly, for Miles' Freddie the freeloader and Coltrane's Naima alone, he 's a legend.
@53:45 "if you're the kind of person who's in a conversation and you're thinking about the next you're going to say.. we've all played with people who aren't listening to you, they're thinking about what they're going to say" Greatest bit of knowledge there. Sadly, this interview started with just that. Marcus asks how Dave is doing and he just rolls with the questions and didn't answer. and the look on Marcus' face was telling.
Marcus is so smart and wise in his ways. He really understands and interprets life in ways many do not. This I am sure has a lot to do with his life successes. What an amazing person!
Great Interview! Marcus is living legend and one of the all time greats. He speaks with such wisdom and knowledge but also with humility. So inspiring. Thank you Marcus!
Marcus Miller is really a legend and one of the best bass player ever, I could listen to his music for hours. Looking forward to come to your concerts Marcus, pls come back to Montreux, it's such a delight to hear you, to see you 🎶 you groove man, love you ❣️
This is such a great interview. What a great mind this man has - through all that he's experienced, a vibrant intellect was collecting it all! Please write a book Marcus. That anecdote about Steve Gadd at the end is just so poignant. The art is not in the body, it's in the mind.
I didn’t t think I had an hour to sit through an interview. Boy was I wrong. An hour just went by like that!!! How captivating and interesting. Loved it. Thank you.
Have liked Marcus Miller since the eighties, never seen him without playing the bass. Great to see the man behind the bass in this clip, and realize that I like him even more now. What a nice guy with a great attitude. A little disappointed that he didnt even mention Al Jarreau though, coming here from this clip that looked like he had the time of his life: czcams.com/video/p76_izZngPI/video.html
We are so blessed with this archive of knowledge, experience, philosophy, and life's religion, that it makes you wonder of the promise of eternal life. Our generation has the greatest library of human history here on CZcams. Don't squander it! OK?
That is the perfect line to parents who want their kid to have something "to fall back on". Naw, gotta fall forward... jazz musicians have humility, musicianship and inspiration.
Lenny White, Billy Cobham awesome drummers. What a buzz to hear Marcus mension them here. Denis Chambers another killer drummer. If it wasn't for a video of Marcus describing 'Kind of Blue' I wouldn't understand Jazz. It was 'the' moment i finally felt the music.
There was a moment when Marcus told David that when he wants to tell you about his life he's going to pick up an [electric] bass and David paused and changed the topic and what a missed opportunity. Marcus was ready to open up big time and looked perplexed and disappointed with David switched topics.
Amazing Jazz History 101 From The Great Marcus Miller! Honered To Call You One Of My Mentors & Brother! Work With Marcus On The Upcoming Film Marshall, Where He Is The Musical Director.....Thank You!!!
Exciting to listen to Marcus Miller's wisdom. You have great content and it would be delivered better if a video editor can clean up your video saturation problem and an audio engineer with Izotope RX 7 to clean up the background noise, compression problem and tonal curve. Interview would be MUCH more engaging!
Now that's a proper musician right there! Sharing his great knowledge and wisdom. Respect! But the sound on your interviews needs to be sorted @NYU. The story about Steve Gadd in the studio is just the best!
Interesting to hear him talking about electric bass in jazz. I love upright but electric bass deserves to have a place in jazz. I think it got a bad reputation during the jazz funk era, where those that played electric headed away from straight-ahead jazz and more towards new sub-genres, and those that played straight-ahead on electric decided to go back to the upright. Electric bass just got associated with the Jaco / jazz funk sound, but just because you don't hear electric bass on many straight jazz recordings doesn't mean it can't be done. It doesn't have to sound 'modern' or 'contemporary', it's a versatile instrument. Listen to Tommy Warrington with Buddy Rich, he played 100% legit jazz on a fretless Precision without ever going down the jazz-funk route.
Maybe . . . just maybe , one could play"straight" jazz and swing styles on guitar bass but why. Can't be denied that upright has a percussive physicality that is so dancing. . . pushes so hard. And the guitar bass is the premier instrument for other styles.
As a musician, I can’t remember a single interview with Marcus where I didn’t learn something or benefit from his insight. I truly love this man.
A living legend!!

Marcus is just so cool. A legend with lots of humility, despite meeting all the legends of jazz, and going through it all. One of the greats of jazz
Great stuff 👍🏾

Hearing information like this is invaluable. The Steve Gadd story speaks volumes of why there's good musicians and then there's iconic musicians
Marcus Miller = legendary
Marcus you are more than a star, you are a legend.

@@autodidactusplaysjrpgs7614 this comment should be a joke
@@autodidactusplaysjrpgs7614 many homosexuals think the same way you do
Marcus you are a humble, smart, kind man. God bless you

Mr. Miller is not only a great musician but a very nice man. He has it all!
Marcus is equally great to hear playing as he is when speaking, and this guys is just one of the best bass players in the world.

Lots of great interviews from Steinhardt, but this one is at the top. Fantastic!

so much wisdom here!
what great interview! thank you for sharing!
It's not a great interview. It's only good if you have a very low, almost neanderthal, standard of human conduct.
beautiful thoughs thanks !
Wow this is so inspirational!!!
Love you Marcus...

Agree with below - this is one of the best interviews - if you have any interest at all in musicianship - listen to Marcus.
Great interview!!

These NYU Steinhardt interviews are incredible. Don't miss Steve Swallow and John McLaughlin.
We also had basements in Manhattan. My folks had a Brownstone in Harlem on 124th street. Had a nice basement!!
awesome!
I
Storytelling lvl 69 ♥️
...this dude is quite informed as far a theory and development of music is concerned !
Great interview with a great bass player.
Please try to fix the sound, because the pumping of the noise filtering is massively annoying.
Now THAT was an incredible, insightful, encouraging interview. I happen to own a Marcus Miller bass 5 string.
There was a moment when Marcus told David that when he wants to tell you about his life he's going to pick up an [electric] bass and David paused and changed the topic and what a missed opportunity. Marcus was ready to open up big time and looked perplexed and disappointed with David switched topics.
True master

If I could give this 100 "Likes", I would ! Marcus shared some great stories, experiences and advice about the Music Business !

54:18 great story about Dr. Gadd; Marcus Miller is true Artist..
Brooklyn comes from "Breukelen" when the Dutch were in New York. Funnily enough, Breukelen is a rich people's town in the Netherlands.
I agree

Mr. Steve Swallow is a great example for electric bass in Jazz.
Wilton Felder played on most of the jackson 5 recordings- most of the hits, at least.
He played on I want You Back and The Love You Save, every bassist on Motown after Jamerson in the 60s and 70s, pretty much emulated his style.
☑️☑️☑️
who are the people who watered it down?
Maybe not the most technical bassist but the grooviest
What r you talking about, that comment clearly defines you as someone that knows nothing about music
Also every bassist now days tries to sound like Marcus. But he doesn't let that stop him from playing. No one can arrange music like him.
He not wrong bout glasper and Spalding
IMA keyboard player need some pointers @ a man henderson
33:15-34:26 great story and so damn true in case of contemporary "stars". Great interview.
John Coltrane had to "walk the bar", even, in his dues-paying years
Is it just me or is the sound really weird and annoying on all these NYU interviews?
A giant among giants...incredible human being.
