Something similar happened to my brother. Was working in an office, covid hit, goes fully virtual, his department closes down due to profit losses. His boss gets laid off and he was told he’d be “reassigned”. He never got a new position or new department but kept getting paychecks for like 2 months until he was eventually laid off as well.
I had this happen during Covid. Some crazy old rich guy hired me and a dozen other people to work in a new sales team he was putting together. Their sales plan was garbage, mainly just cold calling businesses that had purchased random crap anywhere between 1 and 30 years ago, the contacts he had were usually old and bad, or just the customer service line for the businesses, plus, nobody was starting any new projects bwcause of the pandemic, but he was a Musk type who thought he was infallible, and insisted that we weren't trained right or the manager he hired wasn't doing a good job. He pulled everyone off the phones and spent a month making the sales manager work sixty hour weeks to "train him properly" under his direct supervision, then demoted him to a salesman, then layed off half the team he hired and declared he would need to personally train everyone before he allowed them to resume randomly calling people. He spent two weeks making one rep work 14 hour days on salary until he quit, got bored, and abandoned the project, all without giving the remaining people anything to do. So we just hung out for 6 months until he remembered we existed and fired us.

He used to make weird claims about inventing things he didn't invent and constantly ranted to anyone who would listen about how he was the only one who did any work there, despite spending 7 hours a day in his office watching Fox News.
It's all great until they realize the mistake, ask you what you've been doing all this time, and then promptly fire you for not contributing.

Of course he knows he's getting fired. What he doesn't know is that he might be sued, and then there is 50/50 chance of either losing some money or losing everything.

They can't sue him. He isn't defrauding the company or stealing. He's simply obsolete. The company is entitled to let him go and they could claim he's been under preforming tho they haven't requested anything more from him despite having him on the books.
And its virtual so they can't even claim abandonment.
I'd be more worried about how it's going to appear at your next job interview
something different happened to me, although the practical result was the same: I had nothing to do on my home office job. A year later RH scanned the whole team to analyse our productivity. Asked everyone about everyone. People said they've never saw me do anything. Contract wasn't renovated (it was internship).
Lesson Learned: even to slack you have to put a little effort in order to hide your slacking.
Over time you learn to work at the right speed, or to find stuff to do when your main responsibilities are done.
My favorite jobs were the ones where I was constantly busy. I always feel so uneasy when I need to find stuff to do to look useful.

@@redseven4040 Oh boy, here we go. The whole company was about 15 people. I was assigned to a dude who was always super busy, so he would only talk to me weekly. Sometimes once two weeks.
All I had to do was menial tasks like redo configs they already did on our site (for redundancy sake), help them with repetitive tasks and study the company's app so I could give online support for our custommers one day. But only my supervisor talked to me and had the task of assigning me to stuff. So, often, I would finish whatever I had to do, telled him
"hey, task is done, do you have enything else for me?"
"great work, have nothing for you now"
So I did had a lot of free time, that I used to pplay games on my personal computer or finish any college work. So, when HR asked people about me, they did tell the truth, they've never seen me work because they've never worked with me.
Yes, I got paid. And now that I'm a fully grown adult, I have the experience to tell when a work position is scuffed.

Yeah thats not how it works. They signed the checks, its on them to make sure the employee is doing the work. OP will get fired eventually, but a judge would laugh the company out of the court room in a lawsuit.
