About The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King:
"One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." In the conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic masterpiece, #TheLordOfTheRings, as armies mass for a final battle that will decide the fate of the world--and powerful, ancient forces of Light and Dark compete to determine the outcome--one member of the Fellowship of the Ring is revealed as the noble heir to the throne of the Kings of Men. Yet, the sole hope for triumph over evil lies with a brave hobbit, Frodo, who, accompanied only by his loyal friend Sam and the hideous, wretched Gollum, ventures deep into the very dark heart of Mordor on his seemingly impossible quest to destroy the Ring of Power.

I've got the feeling that Warner Brothers is trolling Amazon's Ring of Power.
Probably so. Even I do not like the casting of Sauron, I would give it a shot. Composer Howard Shore is teaming up with Bear McCreary.
@@a.jthomas6132 Same as I am, my man. I'll give it a try but my loyalty for the masterpiece will always be with Tolkien and the original, one and only Lord of The Rings trilogy.
And they should, a lot less budget yet a masterpiece.
@@a.jthomas6132 Amazon didn't even reveal the casting of Sauron yet, but ok.
@@Morcorco It's all over the internet. It's emo eminem.
Ngila Dickson is a genius. She won an Oscar but she should have won three, one for each movie.
The first two movies didn't get anywhere near the respect they deserved by the Oscars. The Academy has always been snobbish about the fantasy genre (so said Christopher Lee and others who knew first hand), and I suppose they were waiting to see whether the third movie in the trilogy could maintain the brilliant quality (which it did).
Actually: the academy was aware by the first movie what was happening and that LOTR is a monumental piece of movie history and will undoubtedly triumph in every category. So they decided to use the years for other smaller production and have a clean sweep for the third to honour the entire trilogy.
These films must never be remade. There is no way that that much passion and love could be improved in any way. This is a masterclass in Tolkien re-enactment.
I love that these guys are posting now when Rings of Power is coming out so everyone is reminded what actual love and quality looks like 👌
Words of truth :)
It really is shocking. And PJ's team had a mere fraction of the budget that Rings of Power has.
🤣 that's exactly what I was thinking
Wait for it to come out first before you judge it
@@Buttcakes15 cough- PRINTED ON SCALE MAIL- cough
Ngila set the standard for how a medieval fantasy should look in modern cinema. Her work is unmatched. Every scrap of cloth crafted to perfection, allowing the audience to become visually immersed in this world.
Couldn't agree more. Magnificent work that is so far ahead of anything comparable in fantasy. An outstanding human creative accomplishment that I have little doubt will last and be loved and admired through the ages. She and all involved should be very proud.
Now weep at the costumes used amazon series
I compare it to the Witcher, where no two characters look like they're in the same world at all. I know they were trying to make it resemble the game, but there is something to be said for people who come from the same country/time period looking more or less the same.
It's amazing how much quality was put into the costumes and props of the lord of the rings.
That's a luxury that doesn't exist anymore.
Even when your budget is a billion dollars...
Thats straight up wrong.
Peter said "We're not making a movie, we're going to Middle Earth to film a documentary."
Back when they actually cared about respecting and staying true to the source material…instead of shoving in some _WoKe_ MESSAGE cancer.
@@Gunnar001 go touch some grass
Gotta love the timing of the video. It's like WB is saying "btw this is how you do quality work. Take notes Amazon"
the combination of the lime green dress with arwens black hair is the most beautiful combination of colours I've ever seen probably
This trilogy was truly lighting in a bottle. It was something special. Start to finish.
Return Of The King - A masterpiece
I couldn’t agreed with you more.
I agree! The lord of the tings trilogy is the greatest movie series ever made
@@SnkrPrince 💯💯
The entire LOTR trilogy is a masterpiece! It could absolutely never be improved upon nor even equaled in quality, not in 1000 years.
Greatest trilogy ever. ROTK is my favorite
3:55 Ian McKellen winking ever so slightly, I can't...
More like Gayvaerts
I can really feel the love and passion these ppl have.. brings tears to my eyes.
Also, so smart to have elven design for Gandalf the White because it was Galadriel who gave him clothes after he came back.
This is literally art. Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings can never be surpassed. Never.
I'll never understand why the first two films didn't received more Oscars, they were robbed. These are the finest set of films ever made
The third film did not deserve so many either. I always felt the judges intentionally crammed all awards into the third one so to make it "rule them all".
I think alot of people thought the first movie was gonna flop.
Fantasy had never been done so seriously, like it was always aimed for a specific public.
It looks like they decided to basically give them all to ROTK as a way of awarding the entire trilogy. The alternative was for all three movies to basically sweep the Oscars 3 years running, which would have potentially been seen as a boring thing to happen.
I always have considered the first to be the best. It is the grittiest of them all without the silly comedy that RoTK especially has. The whole trilogy is a masterpiece of art but The Fellowship of the Ring is just mindblowing and I got to see it in theaters.
I was quite young back then but there is something about that movie that separates it from the rest. I think it is the slightly grittier tone and its smaller scale battle scenes that just somehow work better and are more interesting, more personal and intimate. There is no sadder death in whole trilogy than (SPOILER ALERT) Boromirs.
Also the whole Moria part is just awe inspiring. But I could go on… it is perfect.
The heart, soul, humility, dignity, and respect that were poured into these three films is what made them so special. They took Tolkien seriously, and you can feel the love for his life’s work and the desire to honor his stories and the histories and the cultures he created in all the beautiful details. So many people gave their time, hard work, perseverance, skill, artistry, and careful consideration to make this masterpiece. 20 years later, and still nothing else even comes close to this achievement. I am so grateful to each and every person who contributed to bringing these films into being.
I'm sure there were times when people thought that all the detail and work going into the costumes seemed unnecessary, but everyone who worked on that project, no matter how small a role, will always be able to say that they had a part in one of the most important cinematic moments in history.
It touched me to tears. It's already unbelievably beautiful when you see it in movie, it gets even better when you see concept photos and closeups. But when you see what hard work and skill and talent stand behind this... It's just takes my breath away. I hope these people know that they created a very, very special piece of art.
A "behind the scenes" LotR video is never late nor it's early, it is recommended precisely when it's needed to.
This, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of fantasy clothing and armour design. Not boring (e.g. 100% historical) and yet not over the top (e.g. massive shoulder guards).
100% agree. It's subtle.
It's also great to see clean clothes and bright colours, instead of the dirt and dull colours we usually get from medieval movies.
Historical isn't boring!
Historical medieval clothing is very stylish and varied, how do you call that boring?
Also, LotR clothes are way more historic accurate than some historical movies/shows.
@@Overlord734 Note the "100%" and "Fantasy clothing and armour".
She inspired me to pursue costume design. Fellowship of the Ring was the first time I actually noticed costumes in a film and realized it was an art form. Her incredible attention to detail and her beautiful, well-thought out designs really brought those characters to life in a way I don't think many would have been able to do. Especially after watching Amazon's ROP, and looking at the catastrophe that are the costumes in that show. It really makes me appreciate Ngila and her incredible designs now more than ever before. Thank you Ngila for doing the LOTR justice.
It does not matter that not every single detail from these costumes was seen on film... it is how the actor felt wearing them, and knowing how much love was put into them. And then conveying that feeling through the lens. All those details contributed to this masterpiece and made the whole greater then the sum of all pieces.
And this is why these are the most rewarded movies of all time.....they werent carried by the actors performances or Jacksons director skills alone....EVERYONE played a crucial part in making every aspect fit into this world, and lastly it was made with tremendous amount of respect and love for not only its author, but the genre in general.
The effort they put into designing these costumes is worthy of respect & admiration of the highest order
Akdom
the level of care they put into these movies is unmatched
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy is a cinematic masterpiece!
All the team involved in the making of this trilogy really put their hearts and passion into it. You don’t see something compared in the movie industry nowadays which is very sad.
Why aren't they hiring great fans of Tolkien and PJ's work to make the rings of power instead of these people who are just in it for the money? The budget is crazy, should be able to make something epic and realistic instead of what've seen in the current trailers. The trilogy had nothing woke about it. 😞
@@matias. Because Amazon are using the story to insert toxic narratives. It’s why they’re hiring activists and not actors.
It's unbelievable the amount of detail that was put into each costume especially the women's dresses, details that would never show up on screen or is even cut out completely, all of them were beautiful and even the armor and men's costumes had details that were never shown. These movies were of the highest quality which is what makes them endearing to their fans.
not gonna lie, im kind of tearing up over the love, thought and respect show in the outfits for the characters
Seeing Arwen made me tear up. There's never been a more beautiful woman in cinema.
Ah...remember when they made these movies with such love and respect for Tolkien? I do...magical times
20 years ago they made these costumes and it looks 10times better than anything that was produced for the Amazon fanfic show.
So much yes to this!!!
There are also very talented people like the ones you see on this video working for the Amazon show. Even if you don't like the new design, have a little respect for them.
Didn’t know the show was already out! Wow!
@@DavidArriola No, stop defending amazon slop.
@@DavidArriola Still doesn't change the fact that the costumes looks lazy, cheap and unimaginative based on what we've seen from RoP so far. For example, the crown worn by Durin III is just a piece of metal with spikes. I want to remind you that the show is suposedly taking place during Moria's height of power and the dwarves would've already had vast experience in smithing even before the discovery of mithril. If they even dug deeper into the lore of Durin they could've designed a magnificent yet intricate crown that not only showed the mastercraftmanship of dwarves but also subtly linked to the "Crown of Durin". The heavenly crown that was made up of a star constellation that inspired Durin I to establish the kingdom of Moria in the first place. But no, the talented designers thought it better for Durin III to wear a crude ring of metal with spikes around his head. Very respectable.
Absolute masterpiece. I will never tire of watching these films, nor in watching the behind the scenes footage. Thank you.
Warner Bros is trolling Amazon 💀
@@gandalftehdank6052 I thought the exact same thing!
Lord Of The Rings - A masterpiece
Just rewatched the trilogy again - absolutely timeless masterpiece.
The level of of passion put into these films blows my mind. It feels like a miracle that they actually exist. I don't think any 'epic' blockbuster franchise has come close.
Compare the love and passion put into these costumes with what we have now with the Rings of power..
LOTR Trilogy - not just movies but a cinematic ART.
Some of the most beautiful needlework and sewing I've ever seen in a movie. They portrayed the elves especially so wonderfully!
Literally every scrap of fabric of these films was a work of art.😍
There are no costumes in the entire trilogy that are not STUNNING, but Arwen's wedding dress... is the piece de resistance, I think.
You are right my millennial comrade
I didn't even realise it was green. It looks white on the movies!
And this is why we have a very small chance to see such beautiful productions in our days (2022+). The amount of hard work, dedication, patience, study and in this case artistic and historic culture to make something like this happen simply cannot be compensated by sheer spending. The three LOTR movies had all of these and, above all, PASSION and RESPECT for what they were doing.
Lord of the Rings was made by a director who employed artists and creative people.
It would be very hard to have all that combined again. The stars may never align again. But I hope they do
I love the attention to detail in these costumes. There are SO many tiny details that noone would notice, BUT THEY ARE THERE and that's the amazing part to me. That's the sort of dedication that made the movies as amazing as they are.
Why is it that i always could start crying watching something about TLOTR ? This world is so beautiful and the passion and amount of effort they put in it…. Its a one time masterpiece ❤
20 years after and still the best movie ever
"But they never came up with any decent underwear for Gandalf.. They did try!" And then the ever so slight wink to the camera. ❤️
Wow these costumes are so much better than ROP costumes...
The double sleeves for Gandalf mixes function and style. So clever.
Every detail, even the ones unseen, show how much care and love was put into the trilogy. I’ll never forget their hard work, and I can’t wait to see it outlive the Rings of Power
When you think of LOTR, the main movie is just the tip of an iceberg. There were a lot of things happening behind the scenes. They will need more than 1 hour to discuss costumes like these. That was just the costumes, there’s more. Hands down to this GRAND masterpiece. So amazingggg.
You get the extra stuff on DVDs, not that they sell DVDs anymore.
Peter Jackson's LOTR Trilogy will forever be my favorite. The amount of effort that went in from every aspect of the production is just amazing. It makes me happy to see all the praise these movies have been getting lately.
I never thought that Gandalf the White and Eowyn's white outfits has so much details going on when seen up close. Thanks for uploading this. I got to appreciate how intricate the design was!
For every 1 hour of movie, there shall be 3 hours of "in the making of".
I'd watch every minute!
These guys didn't make movies... they literally made fantasy become reality you can't convince me otherwise.
I think the highest compliment to the whole costume department is that you didn't notice them as much while watching. Because that means that in our minds they were really real. In the screen those were people in middle earth wearing their normal clothes.
Wow this is an era in cinema production that will never come back. So glad to see how much passion was put into the movies
What a treat to see tbe wardrobe upclose. You can feel her passion for design and fabric. It would be nice to see a collection in person.
How the people of Amazon's Rings of Power decided to ignore this masterclass of costume design? 😂
This is a level of artistry the Rings of Power will never meet, despite all it's money.
I so wish they had hired her for the costumes, her designs are flawlessly beautiful. As opposed to the rather clunky looking armours we get now ;-;
Have you seen the show already? :O
@@ahsokatano9070 Plenty of mediocre costuming on display in all the promotional material
@@ahsokatano9070 I've seen the costume designs. They don't hide the character costumes in the trailers 😂.
I know! So much budget and the costume design looks so cheap…
LotR is the height of filmmaking on basically every level possible. All time greatness across the board...
Thank you guys! After months of seeing trailers, teasers of that Amazon show, everyone needed to remember HOW MIDDLE EARTH really looks like and forever will. Beautiful gift!
Anyone else just crying on account of how amazing and talented this woman is😭😭
These costumes are all wonderful! It's so nice to see the thought, love, and care that clearly went into each of them.
You guys posting these videos at this time is savage, i'm here for it
thank you to everybody who worked on these films for their love, care and attentive craftsmanship.
Pure art. A gold production that unfortunately we may never see again.
Such a beautiful memories.
I get the feeling your posting so many videos on the LOTR trilogy in order to troll Amazon’s Rings of Power by showing them how a Tolkien adaptation should be made!! 😂🤣😂
I actually became emotional seeing Pippin and Merry in their Gondor and Rohan costumes respectively, those parts of their story were wonderful.
Is this a slap at The Rings of Power? 🤣😂
they should be grilled to cinders for all they did with this "adaptation" :D
amazon can do a trillion dollar show but wouldn't even become shade of this great trilogy.
I'm probably speaking for a lot of people, for a lot of fan of Tolkien's work, I would rather have seen Warner and New Line create a live-action series in their established style - that is as true to the lore as possible and, most importantly, respecting Tolkien and his work. You could easily have each season focusing on a specific part of the history before the Third Age. There are a lot of characters, some contained to a specific time, and elven characters living through the ages. If you had the rights, that is.
Nah I hate a series
@@sandman8993 Honestly, I'm worried about a series since it would mean that they would just keep adding a lot of fan service to try to keep as many watchers for as long they can to earn money. Not really focusing on the story, This is more common when there is no strict source material.
your in luck , amazon is doing 1 right now lol
@@jimmyjames1807 yes, that's what she is referring to. Amazon will probably ruin the franchise the same way Disney ruined Star Wars.
@@jimmyjames1807 Luck is the furthest thing from it. Amazon is making a series set in the 2nd age ...without owning any rights to Tolkien's work set in the 2nd age. So, even from a strictly legal standpoint, they aren't allowed to use any of Tolkien's 2nd age characters, stories, events etc. in their show, it'll be entirely something of their own making that they are just calling "lord of the rings". And it's very clear just based on poromotional material that they missed the mark by miles.
*The pinnacle of costumes in cinema history. Design, elegance and craftsmanship at their finest.*
Gosh I love these movies. The amount of detail and talent is astounding.
Absolutely incredible! Man, these people really put their soul into helping in the creation of these films. I am sincerely amazed!
Very beautiful movie. I was 6 years when it was first released and until now I am still fascinated living in LOTR's fantasy.
This was amazing. Watching this makes me even more sad for how Amazon are treating Tolkien's legacy! :(
Thank you Ngila. These costumes are perfect and beautiful
Did you really just released this following Amazon's not-so-great showcase? I see what you did there. 😏
And not gonna lie, this was amazing. Shadiversity was right about these costumes. They are spectacular, very well done with passion.
I remember, I recently watched a Marvel movie for the first time (friends talked me into it). And I tried to explain afterwards that something was off, something felt fake, even in scenes where it's literally just people standing around in a hallway and talking.
My friends explained to me that it's all cgi. Everything down to the clothes and the hair of the actors, because it's cheaper than paying actual costume designers to create those things. And that just... made me a little sad.
The most interesting thing is, LOTR trilogy actually had a lot of CGI. But the creative team used it sparingly, just to achieve what couldn't be achieved by physical effects. That gives these movies a realistic perception to the audience, because nearly everything you see on the screen *is* actually there: actors, costumes, props, locations... And that's why they have aged so well, specially if you compare them to the Star Wars prequels, that were shot nearly at the same time, and were some of the first movies to use CGI for everything.
@@limecilla7612 Exactly. And I mean, it's not like the cgi in lotr is perfect, there's moments where you can totally see that it's from the early 2000s. But it doesn't break the illusion, so to speak, because it's used so sparingly and in clever combination with other effects.
(Also, I may be biased here, because I do like the Star Wars prequels, despite... everything. But I always found it funny to compare the Behind the Scenes stuff. You have the lotr dudes running all over New Zealand, on actual rivers and in real fields, and then there's Haydn Christensen just... falling over repeatedly. In front of different green screens.)
Yes, it is sad. There's no comparison to an actual costume. It makes everything more believable and real
@@baguettegott3409 I think it was a blue screen? Taters, tàters...
I just remember the costumes and weapons for the Warriors Three in Thor being so cheap.
8:00 "and she looked fabulous in this dress!" The slight self-praise is 100% valid. 🤣
Lovely to see such care and professionalism going into a production. That’s why the LOTR trilogy is unmatched.
Amazon took a stab at it too. They went “Númenóreans are seafarers, so use a lot of blue!”
The costumes were beautiful. Unlike the ones from the new TV show, which look like plastic and generic fantasy (other than the orcs, they look great)
The focus on making sure that each costume functionally makes sense for the situation it is in, and could feasibly actually function in that situation is what separates the costumes in the Lord of the Rings from almost every other fantasy (or historical) film/show.
the amount of thought that went into every little aspect of the costumes helps a TON with immersion. how they were able to create such distinct design languages for elves, hobbits, men, etc. is baffling. like, you could see a piece of elven clothing and immediately recognize its "elvishness" haha. a masterwork to be sure. one cannot say the same about rings of power and how they just made some cuestionable costume choices.
What a gift to be able to create such quality and beauty, artistic genius!
That tiny wink Ian McKellan gives at the end is honestly adorable 😅
These movies where magical man...
There's more thought put into these costumes than entire Rings of power series lol
You can tell these people really cared about the source material and giving an authentic/real feeling. Can't say the same about this Amazon remake....
I love how much Warners is rubbing it into Amazon's faces how much more respected their Tolkien inspired property is.
Some of the best costuming in cinema history
More effort was put into the costumes in Lord of the Rings than was put into the entire Rings of Power.
"Luckily Tolkien wrote"... Someone go and tell Amazon!
THANK YOU,PETER JACKSON AND TOLKIEN❤️
LOTR Trilogy costumes = Gucci. Rings of Power costumes = Wish
Its like you can feel now that difference between those two crewes - one was able to joke about their egos while truely caring for level of their art to serve the universum of another, the second team is full of their egos without proof of caring for anything worthy of rememberance.
I love how much this all shows up in the 4k versions. :)
Please upload the entirety of the Appendices to youtube!

Yeah, I also was a bit bummed when I got the 4k release and found out that there is no extras like these.
In these films, so much work went into bringing even the costumes to life
