48hr Fishing Challenge | EP3 | Congers from the car in Holyhead

- If I look tired in this video, its because I was shattered. 4am alarm, out the door before 5am, then fishing against tough conditions through to 10:30pm took it out of me.
So here we are, the last venue for day 1 of the 48hr fishing challenge. Trying our luck for congers in holyhead harbour. I remember fishing here with my dad as a kid. Then when I got too cold or tired, I could sit in the car and keep warm. And that's exactly what I needed on this occasion. With +45mph winds battering the island, I wanted somewhere I could take refuge in the back of the van, and this was the spot to do it!
Apologies if I sound like an a£s€ with my speech on not disclosing locations. But the truth is, social media, and cheap tackle means anyone can pick up a rod and go and abuse a spot relatively easily. Holyhead breakwater is a fine example of private land being closed off due to misuse by people with no regard for their surroundings. Whilst people can research and find new spots to fish, I don't want to be blamed for people flooding to spots to fish and leaving their rubbish everywhere. As you have hopefully seen from my videos, I insist people at least take their own rubbish home, or even better, take a bit extra home too.
Anyway, enough of a rant, I hope you enjoy the video. The conditions were terrible, and I stuck it for about as long as I could muster!
Take care & tight lines!! - Zábava
Great video as always 👍 definitely think your new burger idea will catch on 🤣🤣🤣
Too sophisticated for some folk. I'm afraid they just won't get it 🤣
One of my pet hates discarded litter no one gives a damn except a hand full of us who appreciate the environment we live in and respect the wildlife and when I am out fishing I always try to pick up the discarded nylon which infuriates me. And don’t get me started on cigarette butts. Thanks for the videos of you fishing bud love watching, you sure do put a hell of a lot of effort into them the best of luck to you for your channel and the very tightest of lines.
Thanks David!
It's the lack of respect that grinds my gears mate. If I can make one or two people think about their actions a bit more, that's good enough for me
Definitely hard work there mate, but we’ll done for giving it a go. 👍
Thanks Gareth 👍🏼
Been watching videos for awhile buddy, love the content fairplay.
Thanks buddy 👍🏼
Great effort m8,new subscriber loving every minute.
Thanks for the sub, Brian, welcome along!
You certainly put the miles and effort in!
I’m in the Peak District and like you we’re so landlocked!
Grew up in Matlock and it seems always at least 2 hrs from any coastline.
Probably why we enjoy it so much. Keep up the good work pal 🎣🎣
Cheers Andy! Yeah, I'm not far from matlock myself. It does mean though that there's loads of options to fish from, just needs a bit more planning than living by the sea!
You did well to catch anything under those conditions and respect to you for giving it a go. Thank you for another great and honest video, best of luck on your next session.
Cheers Anthony! Too stubborn not to get out haha
If it was that easy it would be called catching and not fishing lol
I got a KFC tonight for tea and your right KFC need to get their act together rubbish everywhere but food was good 😋enjoying your 48 hour challenge ... stay safe and tight lines 👍🎣🎣
Yeah have to give them credit. McDonald's do their part. KFC on the other hand 👎🏼
Glad you're enjoying the vlogs mate!
God loves a trier mate.👍 Keep your head up and you will be rewarded.🤞🤞🙏🙏 You deserve it.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
That's why we all enjoy fishing.🥺😃🎣🎣
Take care and stay safe.😷🙊
Cheers Ian! Couple more sessions like that and I should be ready for a red letter session again!
Top video again dude
Cheers Andy!
Great effort mate…I’ve spent a fortune on whiting this last month or so too 😆 but that big fish is always just round the corner 👍 tight lines 🎣🐠
Can't catch the big ones sat at home Rich
Well done for giving it max effort. Them condition were harsh,. At least you didnt blank. Looks like you got a result with the cakzone 👌
Cheers Mel! Hard going for sure, just waiting for the efforts to pay off 🤞🏼
Dock Bach! Getting mackerel and herring in the day there. Garfish at night! Squid too 👍
I had a squid jig I wanted to give a go as well buddy, but with that wind would have beaten the Stenaline to Ireland before it hit the water
@@theawfulangler 🤣 ye your probably right.
I used to hook the hook on one of wires on the breakaway lead
I've done the same, but a couple of times the hook slipped in to that little gap between wire and weight and didn't release so I prefer to knock a quick rig up now.
Aw mate. I know that spot well and the last few nights even the dog hasn't fancied going out. It's still blowing a hooligan. If I'd known you were there I'd have brought you a brew and a bechdan. Cheers! Dave.
Cheers, Dave, that would have been spot on 👍🏼
I'm itching to get back, but the weather's relentless, and I'm not that much of a sucker for punishment 🤣
Good effort 👍
At least you didn't blank. I hope you get something on the trip that makes it worth while 🤞
Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks buddy! I'm switching coasts this weekend so see what that throws up...hopefully a new PB 🤞🏼
@@theawfulangler Where are you heading?
I'm thinking Seaforth rocks early next week. If the wind isn't too strong.
East coast, holderness, maybe up towards whitby way, I think.
@@theawfulangler Good luck pal 😉
Cheers buddy! You too!
Hi mate you ok, yeah that k.f.c. carpark a shit hole. Them seagulls on your van had doc martins on n tattooes hahaha. All the best from GRIMSBY.
All good here thanks Carl!
Yeah it was like having elephants tap dancing on the van roof 🐘🕺
Nice one, it's all about the participation😜.
Wind going over 50mph this week so you were lucky to catch a calm spell.
I took a reel out that I'd had in bits just before dark this evening with a set of feathers to test and caught a mackerel and 2 herring, obviously whiting too, so will be trying again earlier tomorrow to see if I can get more mackerel and herring for the freezer, crazy in mid January, as long as the wind stays in the 40s that is haha 👍
Yeah, I've seen a couple of reports of herring and mackerel. Hopefully, get down again soon. Might be chance to do a catch bait, catch bigger fish video 🤔
@@theawfulangler well if if makes you feel any better I went back out with my freshly acquired bait but the weather turned back to default and I got soaked and blasted by 50 mph wind for a couple of whiting.
57mph tomorrow yay 😂
Looking forward to trying bait rods early next week, giving 40mph NW at weekend, that will kick up a big sea 🌊 👍
Well, happy birthday, mate!
Yeah, that makes me feel a little better sat in a cosy office staring out at a concrete jungle! At least I'm sat planning this weekends trip out 👍🏼
@@theawfulangler I had to read back why happy birthday, 57mph wind, I've edited, got a while to go before 57 age 😂
🤣🤣🤣 brilliant! Well happy Thursday then pal 🤣
good effort.
Cheers buddy!
Happy days a whiting! At least you didn't blank! When it's easy it's easy but when it's hard you just think fcuk it🤣 proud of you brother out there for days on end! Tight lines 😜👍❤️
Cheers Andy! Yeah, it's hard graft at times! But then, when it's hard graft and that big one comes knocking, it makes it all worth while!
not be long be fore mac d takes over when little jack wants a happy meal when your taken him with you
He can have popcorn chicken instead 🤣
Keep it up lad you'll get a belterfishsoon enough
Cheers Jonathan, I hope so 🤞🏼
Fished there quite a few times when I lived in Cheshire and also the break water. One time I was there a caught 47 dog fish in a hour lol
I'd have taken a dog fish to break the whiting run 😅 it's a good venue, to be honest. Just not when I'm there haha
Fished out of the car for snook here in Florida...and for salmon in port Elgin Canada..it was very cold both times...oh yeah..1 time with baby daughter in car seat...they are hard spots to find...and skyway pier in Florida you can do it...but at skyway you could get the monster bite and get all twisted up with pole and door window...
.
That sounds Epic. Hopefully, when Jack is a bit older and passes his health checks, we will be able to take a year or so out and travel stateside. I've got so many places I'd love to fish over there!
@@theawfulangler I hope I'm around to watch those vids...stay safe and blessed...
@@theawfulangler I found it better to fish the way I knew
.. I wasted time getting involved in new ideas...I hooked some monsters..and lost more fish of a lifetime than the average guy in Florida..but my case is old line, crappy knots.. and rusty hooks...but thats my way...
What are your thoughts on the akios fury.. toying with buying that or anyfish anywhere six and bait 14ft rod?
I have both mate, and they're completely different rods and both great for different things. The akios is a great all round rod, really whippy, very good bite detection. The 6and, again a good rod, but much stiffer. If you're doing general fishing, I'd gonfor the akios all day. I'll be using my 6and imthrough summer when fishing rock marks for things like conger and tope 👍🏼
Produces good fish the Dock Bach, mackerel an herring there now get bass there
Yeah hopefully better weather next trip out and I can catch some fresh bait followed by a decent fish.
But no way was I standing with feathers in this wind 😅 would have ended up with it wrapped around my neck!
Every time I’ve tried a breakaway style rig it got horribly fouled more times than not. Over the years I’ve come to believe the simplest rig is best.
It definitely all depends on the components used. But I also come to believe rigs are disposable, so if ones not doing ya right, bin it and get another!
It's always a pity when private land gets closed off for idiots. I used to fish a beautiful stretch of river, I caught my personal best steelhead there, my only coho salmon (on a dew worm!) and many others. The land changed hands, after a few too many clowns showed up leaving trash and discarded line behind, up went fences and no trespassing signs. I went once after that to talk to the owners if I could fish there and they told me to clear off...they'd had enough.
There's a few spots on the holderness that are the same. Farmers used to let fishermen park on lanes or use fields for access. People blocked access dumped crap left the place a tip. Now there are boulders or mounds of dirt blocking everything off
12oz lead 😮
Thats the KFC Seafood special zinger burger lol
You had one too then 🤣
Imagine getting ready made conger traces for £1.50 now, 10 hooks cost more than that.
I know! Wire, swivel, hook and crimps. Probably about £2 if materials these days!
howdy Brother ! I hope your boy is doing well.
Hey buddy! He's doing real well, thanks! Got upgraded yesterday from the incubator in to a cot. Enjoying his food, like his dad, so gaining weight nicely too 👌🏽
@@theawfulangler that's great news Brother ! soon enough he will be out fishing with his ole Dad !
Soon be out fishing me too no doubt 😅
@@theawfulangler I'm very happy to know he's doing well . if he is your first , you are looking at the best friend , best fishing buddy you've ever known .
take care of yourself and your family Brother .
also tell your wife , that she did a great job making such a fine son .
it's odd to me , but women sometimes think anything that goes , not according to plan , is somehow their failing .
however the truth is that premature babies often come way to early , she held on to this little guy until he was strong enough and that is something she should be praised for .
I'm an old man , and often say things that are none of my business , so please dont take any offense . its just that my wife felt guilty for years , that our boy was born early . she hid this well and I had no idea .
my did a fine job carrying him till he was strong, big, enough to survive ! yours did as well.
Feel free to dive into business, mate. I'm blunt enough to tell you to 🤬 off if someone over steps 🤣
Yeah, she has so many questions that will likely never be answered. Like you say, just have to keep reminding her, it is what it is. Let's forget about what was and concentrate on the here now and future. I think that's the major difference between men and women. We roll with the punches and take things day by day (I do anyway) but women can get hung up on certain things.
I love the mantra: if it's in your control, do something about it, and theres no need to worry about it. If it's out of your control, then worrying will have no impact whatsoever 👍🏼
Hi, Did I hear correctly that there is nolonger access onto the Holyhead break water.
TIA
Hey Kieran! You can access it by foot. But you can't drive down it anymore.
To be fair, I think it's been this way for a few years now, as Stenaline had enough of having to clear the rubbish left behind. But it was my favourite spot as a kid, being able to sit in a nice warm car 😅
@The Awful Angler thank you for the reply.
I'm hoping to try for a Conger this year, and that is one of the "safe" venues I am hoping to try.
Yeah it's a safe enough venue mate! Quite exposed though, so be wary of the wind. Its 1.5miles to the end, long walk to decide its a bit windy haha
Atleast you only stumbled across the local park and spark spot, we went to fish off rocks at the mouth of a small cove one night and came across some doggers
Jason, mate, this trip was littered with them. Weird mens toilets on the previous video, and dogging spot coming up in the next.
If I hadn't been out to make youtube videos, I could have had a great weekend stoned with whatever action I fancied 🤣🤣
@@theawfulangler I know it's not technically fishing but I kind of like the odd folk you'd encounter when you're trying to get a line out. Atleast you know their spot if you ever fancy a dabble in jazz cabbage 😂
It's all part of the adventure mate! But I know there's certain things the Mrs definitely won't be happy me catching 😅
@@theawfulangler see the sights and meet the people from a distance 😂
The binoculars are for wildlife watching...honest!
How do you like the Akios mate?
Love it mate. Trying to organise a session to test the rest of the akios range with a view to get another one
at least you manged to get some kfc and pizza😋
Yeah where there's no fish Eric, have to find food, or I get real grumpy 😅
I saw your van .. didn't know it was you....
I would have showed you a better mark
I live 3mins from where you were
It was just an easy mark I knew where I could get the van on. Next time feel free to come say hi 👍🏼
@@theawfulangler I will come and say hi 😀👍
Good man! 👍🏼
Good little huss mark that. 😉
I know a few good spots for them on the island 😉
@The Awful Angler same. It's a lovely place to fish too.
Another top video buddy…
I don’t use instagram so can’t message though there, drop us a message on my Facebook page if u want and we can plan a collaboration video soon if u want? I’ll get Mike out to, think it would be a great fun session
That sounds good to me mate 👌🏽
That mark looks lovely.. any chance of dropping a pin!!? 😉🫣🤗
🤣 absolutely Steve
