Thanks for the video. Awesome cabinet. I suppose the lunchbox art was my dad's too. I can't be sure though.
You might want to ask about a royalty from Midway ! I'm sure it doesn't work that way though....
@@LyonsArcade hahaha. Yeah, that would be amazing.
Joe if i could have a look at my videos i done a small video on the machine if u can help me out in anyway it would be grate thanks
Gauntlet is one of the main reasons I have been a medieval fantasy nerd for the past thirty-five years.
"Warror needs food badly!"....Dude, this game took a ton of my quarters as a kid!
You probably paid for your local one!
Same - here in the UK it was 50pence - used to hear yellow wizard needs food badly - so often. Food being 50p pieces
Remember: Don't shoot the food
Save keys to open doors
Same herr, Wizard needs food badly!!
One of the greatest games of all time. Used endless quarters playing this game as a kid. Every character was fun to use as well.
I remember as a kid when I saw this I usually didn't have the money to play it, so to me it was like a forbidden thing, or like a world I couldn't go to, it was like a whole experience the few times I got to play it, even the sounds and things were amazing.
@LyonsArcade I've always seen the older kids playing this one back in the day. I never played it but I do remember it.
The local kid in my town always used the Merlin character I believe. He couldn’t be defeated
Played this game so much as a kid when I closed my eyes at bedtime, screenshots of the game appeared.
LOL now that's dedication!
LOL! I did the same thing with Donkey Kong.
Me too, but at only 5 years old I was only allowed a few quarters at a time so I always died after a few levels. :*(
I don't even want to think about how many quarters my 3 high school friends and I pumped into the Gauntlet machine on Friday & Saturday nights back in the day at the arcade. We spent hours at a time playing that. Good memories..to this day I'll find myself using the phrase "Nerd needs food badly" when referring to having to make dinner for my gamer son. :D
It's crazy how a little thing like that sticks with people, I've had several people comment something similar. This game was a little part of most of our lives!
Same here about the phrase, but there’s an important comma after food. Otherwise the phrase doesn’t sound as powerful 😄
I remember our arcade had a special deal after the mall closed for the night that you could pay 20$ and play everything for free. My brother and I had 2 other guys that we played this until we finished it. Miss Aladdins Castle. Lots of fun times.
Aladdin's Castle was awesome, they had one here locally too....
@@LyonsArcade Wow, that brings back memories! We had one at the Del Amo Mall in Torrance, CA! (you know, the same mall that Tiffany shot her music video haha). I may even have a token left over from there:)
Oh, wow! Haven't thought of Aladdins Castle in forever! I miss it too.
This machine used to pump out the theme tune LOUD in our arcade. I loved this machine.
It had a seperate little amp inside of it, yeah it could bump if they wanted it to :)
I love the Gauntlet theme music so much, still in my head 30 years later
Yeah it's pretty amazing!
Same! That intro music was great! My best friend and I used to hum that shit all the time! lol
Same here.
one of the very few arcade units i would want. It was magical then and still is today.
Yeah, such an original style of game and cabinet, something special for sure!
I heard of people winning one of these machines finding out that it's too big for a room in the house. They ended up building a shed to hose this holy megalith. Beautiful machine and fun game, so be it expensive as heck. BOAQ: Bring On Another Quarter.
We had this in the rec room of the student center at college. We did a 18 hour marathon one time. When a player had to go to class, someone would take their place. Otgers would spot quarters if someonw ran out. It qas one of the most fun we had.
You guys probably paid that thing off in 1 week!
Does the game never end?
@@peterjv8748 No. It goes on forever!

85% sure the cabinet and marquee art are my dad's. I remember my dad really talking up this game when it came out. Usually he didn't give a crap about a game unless he worked on it xDDD.
This wasn't his typical style of art but he could do just about anything he was commissioned to. His truer form can be seen on things like Pole Position II, Red Baron, Asteroids Deluxe and APB. Atari also used his Kangaroo art for the 2600 cartridge/box but sadly this art was a completely different style than what was on the arcade cabinet and marquee
I remember when he did Road Runner and Warner Bros was super specific about how the art needed to be done.
Very cool Peter, I was wondering while looking at it if it was his... I always liked the little goblins on the sideart, the whole thing is a work of art, very colorful and really fits the vibe of the game!
@jason9022 His name was Marty Viljamaa. He had an office at Atari in Sunnyvale and Milpitas from 1981 to 1987 or 88. It was his full time job.
@@peterjv8748 the kangaroo. I had that game on atari. I remember that picture!!
I would always add quarters to the guy who was playing.
Particularly if he was in trouble.
This, Spy Hunter & Mappy are my all time favorites.
Years ago I was going down a side street & this guy had 30 arcade games in the basement of his townhouse & he invited me in to play.
All were in mint condition.
Very cool, there are some folks around that have setups like that but you'd never know it with the doors closed! Thanks for watching George we appreciate it!
Moment I opened the video, first thing I heard in my head was "Wizard shot the foooooood"
Ain't it funny how a melody, can bring back a memory?
That and iv not seen such bravery
and “Shots do not hurt other players......Yet” 😄
I know!!!!! lol
Warrior is about to die
The game never ends. The levels get harder but repeat.
That's pretty wild, so it really WAS just a ploy to get our quarters!!!
But it was the funnest of them all. Except pinball.
The levels recycled themselves with some 'mutations' or little modifications. Gauntlet is to arcade as Fishdom (the original) is to casual games.
Way too much laughter and fun being had ! These video’s are serious you two. Nah, so good to watch and hear the enjoyment of a classic game doing what it is designed to do. Great video as always.
Thanks Half Ass Gamer, we appreciate it :) See you on the next video!
I used to operate games back in the mid 80's to mid 90's. I bought a Gauntlet when they first came out. It cost me $2895 + tax (California). This game made tons of money for 18 months straight!
That's cool to know, I'm always curious about what they cost and what they earned!
My wife worked the overnight shift at a convenience store and they had one of these. I would go to work with her and play it all night.
Good times!
That sounds amazing. What a great memory
Looks awesome! Guessing as long as people were playing this, the lease/lights/mortgage/kids college were all being paid for. Great machine
Yeah it must have earned a TON back in it's day....
This used to be one of my favorite arcade games! Loved the theme song too! Was definitely a quarter eater!
Yeah this thing DRANK quarters, such a fun game!
All-time classic. The machine looks great. You guys do good work.
Thank you Linclo we appreciate that!
I'm 47 and this video brings back great memories made in the local pizza shop. Boy did I spend alot of time playing this game! Team up with the right player and you could play for hours. Great video and thanks for the flashback to better times🙏
This game commands respect for its difficulty and the sheer amount of love shown towards this game is amazing. Great vid as usual very informative.
Woooow I used to play that game with my childhood friends 🤗 this brings tears to my eyes m8
Thank you for saving the old stuff and bringing back memories 🤜🤛
Thanks for watching Twig Boy we appreciate it :) Such a cool game!
This game is really fun when you have other players playing with you. I remember back in the day my friends and I played this game for hours. We ended at level 130 something, the only reason we stopped playing is because we're hungry and got some food. If I'm not mistaken this game doesn't end.
If they figured out how to randomly generate dungeons I'll bet it goes on forever!
For marathon gaming, you need someone to stand in for you while you take a break!
I think after 100 the dungeons invert or something.
Have some friends playing for you while you're taking your pit stops. It's like online endurance racing's.
THIS was the video game that provided the main inspiration for D&D 4th Edition.
That makes sense to me, It does have a D&D feel to it...
@@LyonsArcade 4th edition was mandated to be video game like to try and pull in people who played video games but not P&P RPGs.
That cab looks brand new!!! it's amazing!
It was in very nice shape, that's for sure!
Just picked this up yesterday. I am so happy I was able to bring it home. Side art is perfect as well as the control panel and marquee. Even has the Atari joysticks with Atari ball tops.
One of my favorites!!! Loved the sounds.
The elf was the best one, could shoot through diagonals and had greater power. Everyone in the local arcade wanted to be the elf and wouldn't play if someone else was using him. Kind of like everyone wanting to be Nightcrawler in X-Men.
I remember the Nightcrawler thing, and that's true!
I use to play this every time I went to the arcade at the malls. Brings back some great memories
Good RPG game with no ending and it gets harder as it eats your quarters. I remember the 4-Player the tabletop version, not an upright cabinet. Great memories. Thank you for videotaping these classics for future generations to enjoy. Hours of fun.
Guantlet is such an awesome game! I remember when I first saw a Gauntlet arcade cabinet it was in the arcade in the Germany section in Busch Gardens in Virginia when I was on vacation. I played this all the time back in the day at my local arcade called Galaxy in the mall near my hometown. I remember being very excited when it came out on the NES! Great video as always!
Busch Gardens was awesome, they used to have a large arcade in Carowinds here in Charlotte. I've been up to Busch Gardens before though, and Kings Dominion... Thanks for watching Hammer!
Awesome video! I really miss the local Arcade. It was the place to go when you where a kid/teenager. Well at least I have the memories! New subscriber here. Peace
Boy, did this thing cause so many arguments at the local arcade back in the day when someone shot the food.
I would NEVVVVVVER do that :)
No it didn't ... just as long as everyone knows that i am the ELF : )
Or someone went through 100 ghosts to get to it first. Lol.
Stun levels were the worst. Actual fights could break out.
@@jaywunder13242 what is stun
Makes me feel old, when you say it was new in 85. I remember them wheeling one into arcade across from where I worked.
You're not old man, we're all moving through time at the same speed :)
We played this at Peppinos Pizza all afternoon! I can still hear it and smell the pizza. 😂
Loved this game, great to see one still around :)
And still working :)
Joe ive been waiting for this one Thank you so Much Looking forward to these 48 Min, This is the game that made it for me, it sparked my interest for Digital drawing that pretty much set my path to fantasy art, and environment design. My night is Made, Thank you. Im gona pause on that playbutton need to hit there store first .).
Very cool Peter, glad we got it up for you to watch, yeah this was a very special game for me too, definitely one of the very few top ones I ever played as a kid, I don't even remember the cabinet but the gameplay really drew me in back then, it was so mysterious, LOL
@@LyonsArcade but honestly you have such a special job , you are able to repair , own and play them , Its so enjoyable to watch ,U.S. Gold ( Ed Logg and Roger Zeigler.) practically set the ground for modern Hack and slash, dungeon crawlers, . it still a every competitive game to this day. Out of interest does Does Gauntlet I have an ending?.
This is perfect as I have one being delivered to me right now on its way from across the country.
Very cool, I know you'll enjoy it!
HAUNTED SPACESHIP i got myself one with 3 other games included with Joust, Rampage & Defender. My next goal is get Tempest.
Massive nostalgia ! That's the cabinet I always remember. I mastered this game back in 86, starting with Valkyrie. I was always fending off randoms who tried to join in and wreck my multiplier 😅. The arcade staff were always pissed off with me !!
Loved this game. Another blast from the past.
I bumped into a man who used to make computer processors and maintain arcade machines back in the 80s and he told me that many the time he had to repair this machine as the coins would pile up so much that they would over flow then start filling up the cabinet, and as soon as they reached the electrics in the cabinet it would short out . it use to be 40c a gave which was x2 20c coins and they were big coins .
I could see that, this game got played a lot :)
I played this as a kid, but this is the first time I realized the controls are set up awkwardly. Whomever designed the control panel must have really liked using their right hand with the sticks.
Yeah it's a little weird!
Awesome man! Such a cool classic! 👍
It sure is!
Nice Video.... That little guy is a Legend At Gauntlet...
Thanks for watching InDanger Dogg!
We had one at the arcade I worked at back in the 80. The sound effects menu testing in the maintenance menu could sound a bit risqué especially with the volume turned up , specifically when Thyra the Valkyrie was taking damage.
LOL Leave it to the dudes in the arcade to find all the cool stuff hidden in the test menu, HAHA
Valkyrie needs dude badly 😄😄😄😄
This was the most popular arcade game when I was a kid. It was so different. I spent a ton of quarters on it, loved it, but wasn't very good at it. Just like the other comments, I can't believe I still remember so much of it after all these years. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching! I remember when I was a kid this game had a magical feel to it, it was like a whole other world. You could only get that 'feel' by playing this arcade game, the home stuff wasn't this good yet...
My crew and I played this game at Wonderland off 122nd & Glisan Street in Portland Oregon. Probably my favorite multiplayer game ever. Great memory.
Probably a great way to kill some time back then....
Really cool cab! enjoyed watching u all play. I know for us everytime we start playing or trying to work on something it's like customers can sniff it out & know when to come in lol
That's how it always goes, man! Usually we don't mind though, LOL
Considering in what shape it still is, this cabinet is a real piece of video game history treasure! 😀👍👍👍
Yeah, we think so too!
It was always a great looking game, side art, control panel, the cabinet as a whole was great!
Yeah the whole thing is about perfect!
I remember this game was really popular when it came out where I lived. When the home version came out on the Commodore 64 we played it for hours. Then the Sega Genesis version came out with its incredible soundtrack and then I played that one for hours too. I love the random setup of boards too. Great game.
It's a real classic, very original too ... I wonder why they haven't done more big time games with a similar feel? I guess it's just it's own thing in time....
Oh god. The original quarter eater (for me).
LOVE your videos, guys. 80's kid flashbacks...
Thanks Ryan, we appreciate you watching! See you on the next video!
I remember how kids used to place their quarters on the side to let players know they have next. And some girls would tap on your shoulder to get your attention and then pull a razor out their mouths and put the razor down and take the quarters to let you know they have "next", right now. The 1980's was a wild decade.
Whaaaaaa? That must have been crazy man! glad you made it out in one piece, LOL
Did you make it coney island when all the gangs of New York were chasing you?
If you have this in your home, it's gaming heaven. This is the game that you could play perpetually even with just one coin.
This was sooooo awesome
Oh man I loooooooved Gauntlet back in the day. I spent many a quarter on that game. I especially liked when it spoke to you, reminding you that keys can unlock doors, or as you were losing health, etc. In fact, "Wizard needs food badly... Wizard is about to die" became my catchphrase, I would blurt it out whenever I was out with friends or whatever and I was REALLY hungry. :) Still use it to this day in fact.
That's wild how little things like that stick with you throughout your life, i'll bet the designers didn't know that was going to happen :) Thanks for watching, we appreciate it!
Fantastic!!!
Thanks for watching, Dennis :)
I enjoyed watching people play this game, but never really played it much myself because it would eat all my coins way too quickly.
When I was a kid I was the same way, I didn't play too often just watched!
Loved playing this!!!
me too!
Here in the UK at a famous victorian fairground I can remember exactly where this game was situated back in the 80s, such a cool memory.
I remember when the Plaza Centre opened in Exeter back in 1986. This machine was in their arcade rooms, I would love to own one of these things :)
Very cool man we like flashing memories people have forgotten about for awhile :) Thanks for watching Jay we appreciate it!
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARCADE GAME ALL TIME
This game took most of my money that i made as a milkboy... HAPPY DAYS .. thanks for sharing..
Thanks for watching Stephen, we appreciate it!
We have one in operation in Atlanta. Really good shape, too. I just wish the original Ataril joysticks weren't unobtainium! Ours has Happ sticks, too.
Yeah I’m surprised someone hasn’t repod them but as you know the housing and guts are pretty complex....
Awesome memories....could play it from 9 in the morning til 9 at night....with a quarter !!!! 😁😁😁....🏴☠️🇨🇦🏴☠️
The pinball place that I play in a league at has a Gauntlet. He uses a swipe card system with credit plays OR hour rate. Occasionally, we play for an hour to see how far we can get.
Very cool that they're still operating some!
Great video loved this game played it all the time way back. BTW I was able to play for hours on 1 quarter with the Elf it is by far the best and only character that allows you to play for hours on a single quarter!
I used to play this all the time at the local comic book shop. Was my favorite. There was a guy there who could play a pretty long time on one quarter. Always played Wizard and would get mad if someone joined in. He had that game down to a science and another player would cramp his style. The shop owner didn't like him much.
Yeah if I was the owner I would have kicked him out, lol.
Gauntlet didn't mess around how regardless of how well you were doing it'd just start eating your life away to get more quarters out of ya. That's the kinda thing you only see in mobile games now
Yeah they pioneered it! Pretty hardcore game, you always got some gameplay in but nobody lasted too long!
Me and my workmates spent so much money on one of these. I was working in theatre and over the Christmas period we had two shows, doing a total of 4 shows a day, and in between the shows were effectively "Gauntlet Breaks". The amusement arcade was virtually next door to the theatre. I dread to think how much we spent. Brings back some great memories.
There was just something about the timing of the game coming out when it did, it's hard to explain but the whole vibe of the game was a little dark, and 'magical' and dungeons and dragonsesque, it was just a world you only got if you played this damn game. So fun at the time, AND IT TALKED!
No, it's programmed to never run out of levels.
What a gorgeous cabinet! I actually like the matching joysticks aesthetically but obviously not good for a collector.
I loved this game so much as a kid
You lucky lucky b...... lol I absolutely love that machine and played it to near bankruptcy lol 👍
Think of the quarters those coin mechs have seen :)
Gauntlet was great back in the day. Also, as far as multiplayer, Super Sprint and Off Road were so much fun.
Super classic stuff! Imagine all three of those sitting next to each other in a gameroom....
Like everyone else said it was a huge quarter eater...I played alot back in the day..the thing i remember most is when someone would see food they would yell who needs food and the other three would make sure the one that needed it the most got it..I played Valkere the most...the arcade i went to the Gauntlet machine was always being played all day long..as soon as someone would leave someone else would join.....i cannot even imagine how much money it made...
Man that's pretty amazing, I'll bet Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the next one that earned like that! Those were the days, good memories of a different world!
That was my favorite after school game, it was next to our school in a mom-pops general store.
These arcade games used to be everywhere, most of the people that talk about playing them back in the day remember them from locations where there were only a couple, that's very cool!
Killer game. I fondly remember being memorized by the voices and sounds when that game was new and showed up in our local 7-11 right next to Paperboy. ~12yo or so.
I wasted many hours and quarters playing that game with friends when it was new. Good times.
My friend has the original Gauntlet II arcade cabinet. Wild stuff.
Very cool Josh, glad to hear there's some more of them floating around out there!
I was the manager at Diamond Jim's when that game was there. We had 40 for $5 and 120 for $10. There were a few hardcore that played it for hours on end. Quite popular. It was there for all the years I worked there. It was in the sweet spot for about a year until 720 came out.
This is Matt, the guy in the video that actually bought it. That's awesome that you remember those token bags!
@@ElvenForge I sold enough of them. LOL. Diamond Jim's then Flicker's when it changed hands. I still have a few bags and tokens put up somewhere. Nice to know someone that actually remembers that place. I still keep up with a few people from 35 years ago. LOL
@@Reb10999 Wow! That's really cool. I live about 2 miles from that mall, so I went to the arcade from when it first opened up until it closed in the 90's. I've been trying to track down some old photos of Diamond Jim's and Putt Putt, but I've had little luck. You don't have any by chance do you?
Oh wow that Gold Medalist, great finds guys
Thank you for watching Goto10!

It's pretty cool!
Wow, that machine was in amazing shape.
Love this game growing up. Played hours and hours on this
It was something special for sure!
number 2 on my fantasy arcade list.. Brilliant stuff.
Yeah it's something special....
Another classic from my childhood. Center and Main in Logan Utah at the gas station known as The Double Quick. The owners must have loved quarters and hearing 13 y.o. boys swear like sailors!
Yeah ain't that the truth :) The Double Quick, what a name!
1989 Gauntlet was in the lobby of our dorm/dining hall. Would join in and miss dining hours.
"Run away! Run away!" we would yell as we were swarmed.... a la Monty Python.
Miss that video game crew.
Syracuse, NY
I was on vacation in the UK when this game 1st came out and the arcade gave it pride of place (well deserved) I was so enamored with it I took many pictures with my camera of the cabinet. I have no idea how much time I spent playing this on that vacation, but It was more than I did anything else by a mile. I was so disappointed with the C64 version (and every other version I played on computer) when it came out.
I've never checked out the C64 version, was it just the graphics were bad?
@@LyonsArcade No the levels were very few and then on repeat. Bored very quickly.
@Colorado Strong I have lived in the US for 20 years now, so my english is now an amalgamation.

Thanks Mark, we appreciate it!
I remember playing this with my best mates at the arcade it was awesome fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! especially when u needed the food and someone would get it/or shoot it I cant remember
I have this Cabinet with the g2 roms. Such an awesome cabinet but the game was more fun in the arcade trying to conserve your coins get team mate to go in the same direction and use their abilities to match the way they played so much stress lol.
Yup, they all lose something when you don't have to pay to play anymore, lol. Especially as a kid, with limited quarters!
I played this new when I was 8. Top 5 classic for me. WANT.
Yeah it's something special for real!
used to break into this game & change the settings. so fun!
LOL DJ DARREN I CANT BELIEVE YOU'D DO THAT! I never broke into one of these, but had my fair share of other discrepancies :)

Gauntlet was my favorite arcade game in the late 80s and it was the first NES game I asked for, I got it for Christmas the same year we got our NES.
I was pissed it was only 1 player.
Did you ever try pressing the second player start button :>)
Best Arcade Game Ever! 😍😍😍😍
It's pretty awesome!
Awesome, I love this game I have it on the nes.
It still holds up really if you think about it....
The sound was great.
Yeah it was, it kind of helped how they had the speakers placed too. Very smart cabinet design.
1989 Portrush, Northern Ireland , we had this cab in our local arcade , I LOVED it! Then one day I came into play it they had put a new game in it. Some weird newby thing called "street fighter 2" wasn't pleased
Yeah unfortunately they kitted a BUNCH of them! We had a vollyball game in one once....
Nice one u did it again not seen a real one for 25 years .psp is the closest we get in the uk
Glad you enjoyed it Peter, such a classic!
