    When my parents lived in London, transport for London (TFL) started introducing articulating buses. However, they where discontinued due to the face they kept knocking people off the pavement, because the city corner's are too tight. Great video btw 👏

    I love the dual narrator scheme in this vid; it’s a great juxtaposition of omniscient narrator vs. guy on the ground narrating his transit experience
    Also, train good, car bad

    I live in Barcelona and praying everyday that they expand the tram network. Buses are neat, but a many of the bus lines could be changed to tram and increase the capacity enormously. And trams are way cheaper to maintain than buses and do not need recharging, so the initial investment might be paid long term. Anyhow, I suspect that the opposition that the citizens have against expanding the tram is partly because the terrible propaganda against them in the late 60s by the last fascist mayor of the city.

    When I lived in Denver they had a very similar system because the city was laid out on a very strict grid system, it worked well. They also had a big difference between day and night, during the day you could get just about anywhere on a bus, and then at night, you were just out of luck because if you wanted to stay out past 11 there were no busses.

    The H16 you show was the first totally electric bus in Barcelona, and I can proudly say that it goes through the neighborhood where I grew up. And we did not even have a metro in that area for decades, so we had to rely largely on buses.

    Many thanks for this - it's inspired me to pal to visit Barcelona as and when that's possible...
    You are right about the attention to detail when it comes to interchanges - something that many bus operators just don't seem to have a clue about! Getting from anywhere to anywhere with just one change is brilliant - the only way I can think to improve that is to cut down travel time by basing the grid on equilateral triangles - but that would involve starting with a city with triangular blocks!

    The main reason the tram network was replaced by buses was because they wanted to emphazise the use of the automobile and manufacture state-build buses during the dictatorship. That's why most lines had the exact same route as the tram. The only original remaining route is the "Tranvia blau", that is now closed bc of improvements to the line (hopefully not for long)

    The public transport in Barcelona is without a doubt one of the best in the world as it should be in order to cope with the tens of millions of tourists that visit the city each year. It does't even hickup and takes them on like a champ. On the opposite side of the public transport's quality is the total indiscipline of moto, bycle and electric scooter users who are not aware of anything around them but only go forward. We can see this in the video in several scenes. Perhaps the victory over the bus wasn't possible without the casual crossing on red lights. This can leave room for a rematch video to see who wins fairly. :)

    Ben Lawrence, those Mercedes Benz bendy buses were also known for the connection between the two parts of the vehicle, that the hoses for power steering, wore away, and ended up in flames. First Group depot, near the city centre of Man chester, did alterations to those buses to fix them, but a couple of years later, they were sold to make way for double deck buses.

    Amazing video as always and thanks for that. I was wondering though - why didn’t you test out commuting through the grid instead of a straight line? This way you can only actually compare the operating speed of the vehicles in question and not the efficiency ot the entire bus system. I believe the bus would win over the car if you went for a diagonal cross-city trip? 🤷‍♂️

    • @RailwaysoftheWorld1
      @RailwaysoftheWorld1  Před 2 lety +1

      None of the diagonal buses are faster than the horizontal bus I used (it was the fastest on the system actually). Adding transfers would have only worsened the situation.

    I have tendency to prefer old Soviet system, but with condition that city is planned with Tram space planned ahead of building planning as USSR did. Soviet's had whole middle lane dedicated towards only for public transport system Tram at that time, and such planing would free up valuable space for general public and make them feel more free. Most current city space is so cramped with idea that any valuable space should be occupied, which if you think oxymoron metality.
