Same for me. Wasnt even sure what the 2 draw bends should sound like, and this put it all in perspective for me. So important as im finding blues uses the 2 draw quite regularly.

very useful video, thanks this has really helped me out. Cream works really well as a practice too. I knew i could make bend like sounds on the two draw but without a familiar tune i had no bench mark for hearing it right.

Got the 1,4,5, 6 bends last week. Couldn't get past about 1/4 step on the 2 draw. Watched this video and did a full step bend before it even ended. Toyed around a bit longer and got the clear half step. Great video, the advice about giving it some extra gas was key. Now for the 3 draw, he's a tricky bastard.
first i watched your 4 note bend video, and then this one. Sunshine of Your Love, haha, that is awesome. Gives me motivation to keep pushing it (on that one, i can fake some notes that i can't fully reach, blending them in, to put the whole thing together). The detail in your explanations is so helpful, and, AND, is presented briefly and concisely, not sure how you do that. thanx

Oh, wow, man! I've been trying to bend the 2 whole on my C harp down a whole step for ages with no success and the "internal vader breath" thing totally did it in a repeatable manner in an instant. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I still need to learn to control it, but I'm not even done with the video! 😮

Tomlin Leckie would it not work on a cheaper harp? I bout one for 12 quid a fender blues deluxe and can't do any bending whatsoever
One tip for you guys out there: use a guitar tuner to check if you got the right pitch (even those apps that you use on your cell phone will work). Great lesson Tommy, as usual.

I did it holy f I finally did it i bent 4 easily but now I can not only play 2 inhale but can bend it. This is the second day ive had my harmonica.
Tomlin, as always your tips are straight forward and you give everyone something that may work for them. Darth Vader works for me. You had someone else suggest a bending app, I have been using one for 2 weeks now. It is great because you not only get the sound but a visual cue that you are there. It takes the guess work out of "did I hit that full step bend?" :). On android it is called Bendometer PS. It costs $16NZD but I think it has been worth it. And if you are getting clear audio you can look at the tabs the professionals are hitting. I find you and Liam great teachers. Thanks to both of you and all other Harmonica professionals that are helping people learn. Brent

Thank you so much! I had my c hohner harmonica out and tried to play along. I found that I could slightly bend the lowest note, but not the others. Do you have any advice on exercises for bending? i was watching this video and sitting here for an hour with a tuner trying to get it. and i watched you do it and when i tuck my chin in like you did, i got it. Not quite sure whats happening when you do it. Its literally the only way i can get it...hope this helps someone.

I downloaded a bender training app. I listened to this. I am going from 2 draw. To 2draw (f) but in between it dulls out the sound & sounds super wierd. Than the last one slowly arise. I’m going to keep it up. Thanks for making these!

Hi Tomlin, this is helpful and i think i get little mini-bends occasionally now but it's after a struggle! I struggle with hole two on the C harp mainly - can bend other holes and hole two on other harps (eg a & d). Is this a common thing?
+gary16642 hi Gary, this is common. I would spend time on the A and the D and get it really really comfortable. Then, try moving back to the C.

Great tutorial. I'm extremely new to harmonicas. Have seen few videos and read few articles about 2nd position playing. However one thing which is not clear to mean is on which all holes what action leads to the notes of the blues scale in the key of G (in a 'C' harmonica i.e. key of C in 1st position). Blues scale in key of G, I suppose is: G, Bb, C, Db, D, F, G. That should normally mean:
2-Draw (G), 3-? (Bb), 4-Blow (C), 4-? (Db), 4-Draw (D), 5-Draw (F), 6-Blow (G - higher). So for Bb is it a half-note bend while drawing on 3rd hole, and Db is half-note bend while drawing on 4th hole ? Can someone clarify this ?
Ahhh. I can get a “3/4 bend” but no more!! Should I just keep doing it over and over and maybe in some days or works it will just happen?

I can only get a clean two hole draw if I either pinch my nostrils shut, or I breath in through my nose while drawing. I’m assuming it has to do with shape and volume. I don’t think leak air when I draw the normal way.
What holes are this on the c I don't have a hoener and I need the tab lol

Hi Nicholas, the 2 draw whole step bend on an A harmonica is the same principle as the 2 draw whole step bend on a C harmonica. However, the tongue position is slightly further back (still pointing forward though). Persevere with it and keep pushing a little further back each day and eventually you will get it. Cheers, T

Is it OK if I ask a really dumb question? Well I'm gonna.... Does ease of bending holes 2 and 3 depend on the key of the harp? I ask because while I can play the sax solo from "Careless whisper" on harps C and above without problems, playing the very low notes of that melody on a low-F (to be in the Dm key of the record) is difficult. So is it just me or is there something mechanically different about lower key harps that makes bending holes 2 and 3 more difficult? Anyone got any ideas?
+Dino Goldie hi Dino, there are no dumb questions :-). The lower key harmonicas are harder to bend the low notes on. They require a much bigger mouth cavity to bend. Feels like you are trying to swallow your own tongue.
Someone mentioned going to a higher key. I can drop a whole step on the F so easily it scared me -- still nothing on the C beyond the half step bend, maybe a LITTle lower.
+Rob Herrington just keep persevering, if you can do it on the F you will eventually be able to do it on the C. The tongue will just need to go a little further back towards your throat.
The two hole whole step bend and three hole one and half step bend seem impossible for me!
This is so frustrating.
If you are struggling to get them, try moving up to a higher key harmonica for a while as the bends will be easier.
Did you ever get better on low bending? I had no luck till I realized you have to pucker much tighter, which makes the hole between your lips "smaller," 2.) Draw faster and harder through that smaller hole your lips are creating & 3.) draw tighter & harder still, like you're pulling a thick milkshake or pudding through a straw.
Don't get discouraged. You have to build "embouchure" like a sax player.
So it's harder on an A harp then. I have no trouble with this on a C. I've played Sunshine of Your Love.
It really relies heavily on changing the shape of the "pipe" the air's forced through. One thing that helps me is to think in letters: I form a long A shape & sound and quickly squeeze it into a long O, while intensifying the pressure in the mouth cave (or cavity).

Is it possible that there's a manufacturing glitch with my harmonica (:Hohner special 20)? Cause I can half bend all notes UP TO 7 (even 7 a bit) , but can only go to 2 half step bend no matter any technic I've tried.
Nevermind, it was the video compression that made me think 2 whole bend is lower than I played it. I looked it up and it's the equivalent to the note F which I can actually reach easily. Now I just have to practice. Thanks for the video btw!

This may be odd but I have no issue with my 1 or 2 hole bends whatsoever. The one that I have fits with is my 3 hole half tone draw bend. I can get the whole step and tone and a half step no problem but the half step gives me fits. It’s like the note goes from not bent to at least a whole tone.

Absolutely! This is very common. When you are bending you are changing the size of your vocal cavity to tune it to the pitch you are bending to. As you find the lower bends on 1 and 2 easier that means you are going to a larger vocal chamber size. This is too big for your 3 draw half step bend and so you are pulling past it to the whole step. Try slowing down the bending movement from clean 3 draw to 3 draw half step bend and listen for where the bend happens. It will be much further forward in your mouth than you are expecting.
@@TomlinHarmonica makes perfect sense I will do that. The thing that baffles my mind is the fact I can get ell the bends on my A harp (even the half tone bend on 3) but have issues with it on my C harp especially my Manji. My A harp is also a Manji but I can bend it no problem.
I assume it’s a combination of not having the muscle memory great on the bends and maybe the gapping is a bit wide on the C Manji I have.

I've found I've just managed to do it, but it doesn't sound great. It only works if I breathe in a bit through my nose at the same time - I wonder if that's something I should be doing
But weirdly I've also found I can do it if I hold my nose! I've been reading up on the internet, and it's obviously a thing that some people have a problem with. I'm guessing that the kind of movement that I'm doing in order to do the bend is causing an airway to open.
Ok, I read around a little more, and I realised I shouldn't breathe in through my nose while draw bending. I've just about managed to get it now anyway, although it's far from perfect (also far from ok). It's just a question of keeping at it I reckon - if you can bend down a microtone then just keep working at whatever you're doing and it seemed to begin to click eventually. I also fiddled with the gapping a bit, which may or may not have been a good idea, but it seemed to make a difference.
