It's an interesting small camera the size of a compact camera from like back in day like a sony cyber shot but with different lenses. I think you can get adapters for it since it uses the yashica c mount. If it allows me to use more than just their lenses I'll probably buy it
There's a lot of issues with it that lead to it not being something that people would really want, at least not in enough cases to justify. Digital backs have been a thing for quite a few years in larger formats. But, even when it does work, you just get a digital image off the sensor, the entire thing has to work with the rest of the camera and analog cameras are designed with film in mind. That's not to say that it'snot cool, but at this point, it's always going to be niche and probably mostly of interest to collectors.

I remember seeing that concept in photography magazines back in the early 00s, with the assumption that it was "coming soon". I had honestly forgotten about it. I had a Nikon F4 back in the day, the idea of using it to take digital photos is fun.

These would have been valuable alternatives to DSLRs, yes, 20 years ago, but now, they have little practical value. If the use of vintage lenses is what you are after, you can get a mirrorless body with lens adapters that can accommodate almost any old lenses, and many people are doing exactly that.
Great idea! Reminds me of those cassette tape adapters that you put inside an old car stereo that played tapes and you could input from a digital source like a personal CD player! I think you need a big box type camera like a box browning or twin lens reflex style, plenty of room inside. Good luck 👍
LOL, I remember those! When I first saw the "I'm Back", I thought of that car FM radio tuner adapter (Radio Shack?) that teed into the AM antenna. You tuned the AM radio to the end, around the 1400khz end of the scale and converted an AM radio to AM/FM.
The easiest part to replace - small series production - is the rear door. Once you can produce a new new door you have a lot more freedom to work, integrate controls and even a screen. OTOH, you are still missing a way to interface with the actual camera. As long as the solution is not an actual FF camera that you can use without tethering, that doesn’t require a bulky grip, it will NOT be the enhanced version of your beloved film camera of choice. However I love the idea, IMO it is a dead end for many practical reasons. Ultimately would be many times easier to create a digital camera from the ground up, that works and looks like a film camera. It isn’t hard to imagine a simplified FF body without LCD, without most of the buttons we are used to on digital. Basically a digital Nikon FE / OM10 or something of that level, it would be slightly bigger than film because of the FF sensor, mirror and battery, but not as bulky as the ZF. BUT it would be niche, expensive and not a commercial success unless it has that Leica factor. I would imagine such a system in two forms, a modular mount - allowing for a wide range of lenses - or more likely a universal body design, but with different mount options. This would be more practical and allow for more revenue. The revenue part is the challenge. This is something that is more likely to come from the Chinese than west. They seem to be able to combine enthusiasm for photography, which affordable solutions. Global niche market can still be sizable.
Some really great points there. Agree a very niche project. I think the Fuji and Nikon guys are doing a great job bringing back the analog look experience already with their cameras. Hardest part is fitting it all inside. For the hobby enthusiast the raspberry zero boards would be best. Thanks top comment 👍
I think it is possible to integrate basic controls even without specific back. I've seen many videos trying to implement digital-film feature, but no one ever have tried to control capturing with rewinding knob. you basically can apply rotational force in every mechanical camera via this knob directly to the film cassette, so there is an obvious way to put something like a switch right under the cassette and program it for on/off for example. you wind the shutter, turn sensor on (in fact this is similar to starting exposing a long-shutter shot), take a picture, and then some kind of processor turns sensor off automatically upon recieving dark-light-dark sequence. indeed there is no much of a space inside a camera, but I think using flexible PCBs can partially fix this problem. also, dimensions of typical film roll are already large enough - especially assuming that you basically need to fit only a small SoC, microSD slot, a switch, some kind of buzzer for audio feedback, a couple of buses, and a battery cell (actually power supply for FF is the biggest trouble for now, but this is gonna resolve in like a couple of years with new batteries tech upcoming) the only big flaw for now is that we have to wait for Samsung to invent thin flexible sensors to be able to craft really thin film-like matrices for this stuff. so getting a product today digifilm enthusiasts are dreaming of requires waiting and designing everything from complete scratch.
A door works with 1 model of camera instead of 300 models of cameras at once, I don't think that's viable. I'm thinking wireless connection to a hotshoe control unit, which would work with basically any camera.
What's the point? Using a film camera is the process and the results of film, the developing the actual negatives of you want digital just buy digital. If you have a favorite film camera just use film if you want a film like experience a Fuji camera has all the knobs you can use in the manual mode it even has film sims. I love shooting with my mamiya C33 the way it was designed using and developing my film
Yes the whole film experience can't be replaced. I like how this gadget can be popped in and out of 99% of cameras. More of a novelty thing but a good idea.. hopefully its not too expensive
Well it’s certainly interesting as a project to reuse old film cameras, I have a old 35mm Olympus and that slot in thing (I’m Back) would be worth looking at when fully developed, really because I really loved that camera, probably not because it would make photos anywhere near as good as my latest Olly. With digital its not impossible to lose every picture you have ever taken. Digital is nice though just have to keep back ups. Id love to digitize my Canon Rebel G 35 mm.
So true. In 2001 my brother lost all photos of his new born son. Hard drive failed.. it was all new then so nobody thought about backups much.. that Canon is a cool camera 📸

The thumbnail, its strange seeing something i drew a picture of ,as a fantasy , in around 2005 , the idea was the sprocket drive would power on ,begin and end the exposure. And the film rewind woud have a slip switch to turn off.

A native 4/3 sensor would have to be placed a few cm's longer distance back from a 35 mm lens, in order to focus through the lens and get the whole picture in on the sensor, I wonder what they did to overcome that hurdle ( perhaps thats why i cant find any video of the contraption in action) I also wonder what the portuguese/italian team (guy) that sits on the kickstarter campaign will do once they reach the battery development part of the digital film canister🤪

Eheheh they joined the worst of two worlds: the disadvantages of film photography with digital photography. No LCD to take the pictures, the necessity of a battery, lower resolution, bad low light sensitivity (I doubt it is a high end sensor). In most cases is more a novelty than a real useful thing. I would use it on a Leica or a Hasselblad if it fits, but just because of the camera, not because of it.
Yes. I believe he is, and lives in Switzerland now. It actually has a bottom section that has a live view screen and battery. Only the sensor goes in camera. True a novelty for the most part. Leica owners might say it's all too sacrilegious.. haha 😆
Turn the sensor 90 degrees sideways and it becomes “half frame” of the old days and much more suited for the narrowing vision of the vertical content consumers of modern era.
You could be onto something with the square shooter, add a few brass cogs and some copper pipes and you've got the world's first "steam punk" digital camera.

I wouldn't HAVE it! I've been using silver for 61 years of professional photography, because I like it and MY CLIENTS DEMAND IT! NO digital imaging sensor for under $100,000,000 (NASA or NSA) can TOUCH 4x5 sheet film and good lenses for resolution, sharpness and color fidelity. The art directors that DEMAND 8"x10" color transparencies won't accept anything less. My friend from Montreal travels the World with his 8"x20" film camera to photograph automobile brochures. He makes more money than god at it.

@@breh9320 you may want it to work that way, but most people are not going to want a camera experience that gives poorer results than digital and film. A experience that is not going to be really like using film and a more difficult experience than digital.
Bear in mind, a raspberry pi has a bundle of peripherals and and ports built in that require power, strip down all that stuff and you would be left with just a couple of ports, to drive the camera and export the saved images I imagine that this device is actually already available somewhere, now place it on a flexible pcb in the cartridge on a spiral pcb and you would easily have enough room for the graphic cpu, cpu, memory and peripheral driver. and attaching the battery to the base is no more than havinfg enough flex pcb to put the pack below the motordrive location. To detect when the shutter is opened is a no brainer - send the image sensor to sleep with the exception of a few pixels to trigger the event, or a separate sensor with just a few pixels to wake the system up, with speed of cpu's this would be in the 10,000's of a second range range, ISO set would be on the battery compartment, just set to the camera ISO.
Sounds complicated. I think the I'm back invention doesn't use RP anymore. My silly version was just a pi with a screen and battery chucked into a camera.. it kind of worked..lol 😆

Wish it was crop sensor rather than 4/3, having said that, perhaps its sufficient enough. Then there is cost, yes its a cool idea to be able to use the old SLR body but if its too pricey, just get a Fuji X camera or the Nikon retro digital.

@@robdido I had a chance to try one of the first OM-1s in the U.S. -- back when I was in college. I really liked it, but I was too deep into the Nikon system. Eventually (after OMs were no longer being produced) I replaced the Nikon gear with OM and used them until repairs were just getting too iffy. IMHO the OM were the best all-around manual focus SLRs built -- real shooter's cameras. I still have one OM lens left -- the 50mm f/1.8 MC in the 5,000,000 serial range. This is where they finally got the bugs worked out.
@@Gallery90 yeah. I've got a roll going in my OM1.. the version without the MD On the front. And a 50mm f1.4.. not sure what serial number. Can you date them by serial?
@@robdido At one time I might have been able to tell you, but I think there are resources for that information still online. I think that the F/1.4 started as a single coated lens, and then went to multi-coated (marked MC). There was also a 50mm f/1.2. Of course, in my film days, every fraction of an f-stop was worth having. I had the 50mm f/1.4, but the f/1.8 was considered a very good lens at a good price. Several iterations had problems with sticky aperture blades, which was solved in that last version.
@2:20 You fit it in by using a Nikon with a removable (250 Ex backs type of thing) back. Just replace with the digital part the film part. Meter with a LunaPro and manual set everything. Since 1982 my humble FM2 is all I need or WANT. Nikon do you hear me? And, in camera presets (looks like): Agfapan25, tri-X, Fujicrome50, Koda ...
I too have my FM2, F3 and F4 bodies and hope miniaturization will somehow be able to solve this. In the meantime I seem to recall that there was a Polaroid Film back for the F3 or F4 that might give you more working room to innovate within that space of the camera body.
All the mainstream cameras in 35mm were full frame. So anything less in a sensor would be problematic. There were a few 110 formats so a lens from that era adapted to a 35mm body would maybe be usable, but rear element to sensor would be the tricky part. However, how to connect the shutter release? It all sounds pretty over the top and not very practical.

I guess if you like to tinker, this would be a fun way to (kinda) update your old film cameras. Unfortunately I don't see it as a way to take better photos or be a money saver. My ancient to almost new Nikon lenses fit on my DSLRs just fine. I suspect Canon and other makes have at least a few good choices that will do the same thing. But with that said, fun concept for some folks to try.

But why... the system doesn't have any cheap ultrawide lenses, so everything is stupidly long (effective) focal length, lower res than 35mm film, barely any controls, unnecessarily heavy (making an image circle way bigger than needed)... and not even cheap
Practically no it's not the wisest choice, but I guess if you like your old film camera and want to make it into a digital and have spare cash to spend then it's something for someone to fill that want
💥Samuel has done it again👍 But the new MFT digital film cartridge has a crop factor of 2 ! My 16mm fisheye lens would become a 32mm wide-angle lens with barrel distortion. Ribbon cable & camera seal can wear on each other and the new system is rather expensive 😉 I use OM lenses with an adapter on a Canon DSLR and my I'M BACK pro with inherited east german SLRs with old Zeiss lenses👁️ The company is trustable - their after sale support great. They delivered an improved matescreen for my 5 year old I'M BACK really fast😁👍
That's cool you got the original one. Yes seems a bit expensive the new one. I originally thought it wasn't going to have the bottom bit. Just the film canister and sensor all in one would be a winner 😆 maybe next version. I'm sure it would need a lot of engineering

In my opinion digital is not true photography. Digital is just differing levels and intensities of data, I call it digitography. True photography is retaining an image on film with silver halides and various dyes to show a recorded instant in time. This venture needs to be more available to people familiar with true photography to be successful.
From gelatin and silver to quarts silicon and germanium the process of capturing light has changed but the instant in time remains the same. No two rolls of film are the same which you could argue is a good thing. I like to shoot both film and digital. I agree something was lost when it all went to zeros and ones 😆
@@robdido It is impossible to get absolute black in digital and absolute white is an absence of data which cannot be perfectly rendered on a computer screen. Another complaint I have is how easy it is to falsify a digital image and it is presented as a true in enhanced image. I can understand dodging and burning but the negative remains the same.

One possible solution for Raw files is to utilize block chain technology but even then all digital can eventually be tampered with. I always wondered how original valuable RAW photos are sold?

2 major down sides to digital : needs battery, has an unorganic look to pictures. The only way to save film cameras is to keep making film, end of the story.
Well for 800€ I can buy either a good entry digital camera, that's better than modify my old slr. Or I could buy a bunch of film for that money. I mean it's a very cool idea but I don't see a real use for that.
This is actually a really simple problem to solve... but there's no motive for Nikon, Canon, or Pentax, etc. to solve it... they want to sell NEW $$$ cameras, not a $50 part that makes your old camera last forever.

I don’t think that there is a convenient/viable/affordable way of doing this. I owna a Nikon F4 in pristine condition, and I have come to the conclusion that the best way to use it is the way it was intended = with film, probably most conveniently with slide film, and if digital copies of the images are required, then to take digital images of the slides..🤷🏼♂️
Just saw those old Sony's.. they look great.. still expensive here in Australia eBay.. but yes they would make a better choice technically and financially. Still holding an old Canon ae1 in your hand would be cool 😎

The thumbnail, its strange seeing something i drew a picture of ,as a fantasy , in around 2005 , the idea was the sprocket drive would power on ,begin and end the exposure. And the film rewind woud have a slip switch to turn off.

A native 4/3 sensor would have to be placed a few cm's longer distance back from a 35 mm lens, in order to focus through the lens and get the whole picture in on the sensor,
I wonder what they did to overcome that hurdle ( perhaps thats why i cant find any video of the contraption in action)
I also wonder what the portuguese/italian team (guy) that sits on the kickstarter campaign will do once they reach the battery development part of the digital film canister🤪

Eheheh they joined the worst of two worlds: the disadvantages of film photography with digital photography. No LCD to take the pictures, the necessity of a battery, lower resolution, bad low light sensitivity (I doubt it is a high end sensor). In most cases is more a novelty than a real useful thing. I would use it on a Leica or a Hasselblad if it fits, but just because of the camera, not because of it.
Yes. I believe he is, and lives in Switzerland now. It actually has a bottom section that has a live view screen and battery. Only the sensor goes in camera. True a novelty for the most part. Leica owners might say it's all too sacrilegious.. haha 😆

I wouldn't HAVE it! I've been using silver for 61 years of professional photography, because I like it and MY CLIENTS DEMAND IT! NO digital imaging sensor for under $100,000,000 (NASA or NSA) can TOUCH 4x5 sheet film and good lenses for resolution, sharpness and color fidelity. The art directors that DEMAND 8"x10" color transparencies won't accept anything less. My friend from Montreal travels the World with his 8"x20" film camera to photograph automobile brochures. He makes more money than god at it.

@@breh9320 you may want it to work that way, but most people are not going to want a camera experience that gives poorer results than digital and film. A experience that is not going to be really like using film and a more difficult experience than digital.
Bear in mind, a raspberry pi has a bundle of peripherals and and ports built in that require power, strip down all that stuff and you would be left with just a couple of ports, to drive the camera and export the saved images I imagine that this device is actually already available somewhere, now place it on a flexible pcb in the cartridge on a spiral pcb and you would easily have enough room for the graphic cpu, cpu, memory and peripheral driver. and attaching the battery to the base is no more than havinfg enough flex pcb to put the pack below the motordrive location. To detect when the shutter is opened is a no brainer - send the image sensor to sleep with the exception of a few pixels to trigger the event, or a separate sensor with just a few pixels to wake the system up, with speed of cpu's this would be in the 10,000's of a second range range, ISO set would be on the battery compartment, just set to the camera ISO.
Sounds complicated. I think the I'm back invention doesn't use RP anymore. My silly version was just a pi with a screen and battery chucked into a camera.. it kind of worked..lol 😆

I wish him the best of luck but I really hope some company buys his idea so they can futher develop the idea. The goal is not to have the attached bottom plate on the camera. I want a product that fully fits inside the camera, no added attachments or size.

Wish it was crop sensor rather than 4/3, having said that, perhaps its sufficient enough. Then there is cost, yes its a cool idea to be able to use the old SLR body but if its too pricey, just get a Fuji X camera or the Nikon retro digital.
The glass too. But yes expensive and the Fuji and Nikon retro style can use adapters. I think it is a bit pricey. Id like one without the bottom part.. that would be tricky to make

@@robdido I had a chance to try one of the first OM-1s in the U.S. -- back when I was in college. I really liked it, but I was too deep into the Nikon system. Eventually (after OMs were no longer being produced) I replaced the Nikon gear with OM and used them until repairs were just getting too iffy. IMHO the OM were the best all-around manual focus SLRs built -- real shooter's cameras.
I still have one OM lens left -- the 50mm f/1.8 MC in the 5,000,000 serial range. This is where they finally got the bugs worked out.
@@Gallery90 yeah. I've got a roll going in my OM1.. the version without the MD On the front. And a 50mm f1.4.. not sure what serial number. Can you date them by serial?
@@robdido At one time I might have been able to tell you, but I think there are resources for that information still online. I think that the F/1.4 started as a single coated lens, and then went to multi-coated (marked MC). There was also a 50mm f/1.2. Of course, in my film days, every fraction of an f-stop was worth having.
I had the 50mm f/1.4, but the f/1.8 was considered a very good lens at a good price. Several iterations had problems with sticky aperture blades, which was solved in that last version.

@2:20 You fit it in by using a Nikon with a removable (250 Ex backs type of thing) back. Just replace with the digital part the film part. Meter with a LunaPro and manual set everything. Since 1982 my humble FM2 is all I need or WANT.

I too have my FM2, F3 and F4 bodies and hope miniaturization will somehow be able to solve this. In the meantime I seem to recall that there was a Polaroid Film back for the F3 or F4 that might give you more working room to innovate within that space of the camera body.

yes. That is a good idea. Just have the sensor and sd card store image. And then review later on the computer. Just like film 😆.
All the mainstream cameras in 35mm were full frame. So anything less in a sensor would be problematic. There were a few 110 formats so a lens from that era adapted to a 35mm body would maybe be usable, but rear element to sensor would be the tricky part. However, how to connect the shutter release? It all sounds pretty over the top and not very practical.
Yes the sensor would miss a lot from the lens. Might be sharper though at center? Not sure.. the shutter is a big challenge

I guess if you like to tinker, this would be a fun way to (kinda) update your old film cameras. Unfortunately I don't see it as a way to take better photos or be a money saver. My ancient to almost new Nikon lenses fit on my DSLRs just fine. I suspect Canon and other makes have at least a few good choices that will do the same thing. But with that said, fun concept for some folks to try.
Agree. All reasons to not bother except for the fun factor. If it was cheaper and without the bottom part, it would be great to still use your old film camera without the real film.

But why... the system doesn't have any cheap ultrawide lenses, so everything is stupidly long (effective) focal length, lower res than 35mm film, barely any controls, unnecessarily heavy (making an image circle way bigger than needed)... and not even cheap
Practically no it's not the wisest choice, but I guess if you like your old film camera and want to make it into a digital and have spare cash to spend then it's something for someone to fill that want

💥Samuel has done it again👍 But the new MFT digital film cartridge has a crop factor of 2 ! My 16mm fisheye lens would become a 32mm wide-angle lens with barrel distortion. Ribbon cable & camera seal can wear on each other and the new system is rather expensive 😉 I use OM lenses with an adapter on a Canon DSLR and my I'M BACK pro with inherited east german SLRs with old Zeiss lenses👁️ The company is trustable - their after sale support great. They delivered an improved matescreen for my 5 year old I'M BACK really fast😁👍
That's cool you got the original one. Yes seems a bit expensive the new one. I originally thought it wasn't going to have the bottom bit. Just the film canister and sensor all in one would be a winner 😆 maybe next version. I'm sure it would need a lot of engineering

In my opinion digital is not true photography. Digital is just differing levels and intensities of data, I call it digitography. True photography is retaining an image on film with silver halides and various dyes to show a recorded instant in time. This venture needs to be more available to people familiar with true photography to be successful.
From gelatin and silver to quarts silicon and germanium the process of capturing light has changed but the instant in time remains the same. No two rolls of film are the same which you could argue is a good thing. I like to shoot both film and digital. I agree something was lost when it all went to zeros and ones 😆
@@robdido It is impossible to get absolute black in digital and absolute white is an absence of data which cannot be perfectly rendered on a computer screen. Another complaint I have is how easy it is to falsify a digital image and it is presented as a true in enhanced image. I can understand dodging and burning but the negative remains the same.
@@haroldishoy2113 good point about the black issue.. didn't know that. I've been playing around with this AI thing lately and it's a bit scary. Yes.. the negative is still the true source. One possible solution for Raw files is to utilize block chain technology but even then all digital can eventually be tampered with. I always wondered how original valuable RAW photos are sold?

This is actually a really simple problem to solve... but there's no motive for Nikon, Canon, or Pentax, etc. to solve it... they want to sell NEW $$$ cameras, not a $50 part that makes your old camera last forever.
Would cost more than $50.
It could be a good marketing angle for them. Most people would buy a real digital camera anyways. Something to show off their legacy in the industry.

The Olympus EM-1 with it's Panasonic sensor can most certainly be an alternative to using 35mm film.
As well as the Nikon D700.

What is the point of this? If you want a digital camera then buy one.... There is no shortage of cheap used digital cameras.
The idea of the inventor is for the conversion of old film cameras for people that like their old cameras and still use it without film. More of a novelty than a practical thing. If the price comes down it would be fun to use
I don’t think that there is a convenient/viable/affordable way of doing this. I owna a Nikon F4 in pristine condition, and I have come to the conclusion that the best way to use it is the way it was intended = with film, probably most conveniently with slide film, and if digital copies of the images are required, then to take digital images of the slides..🤷🏼♂️
Just get a Sony NEX 5 and some vintage lenses and for less than $150 it will work better than this ever will.
Just saw those old Sony's.. they look great.. still expensive here in Australia eBay.. but yes they would make a better choice technically and financially. Still holding an old Canon ae1 in your hand would be cool 😎
