Camino De Santiago How To Get Your Trekking Poles To Spain
If you are like me, you LOVE your trekking poles and if it's up to you, you will never be apart from each other! I understand this connection, heck I have blisters to prove it but...what's a pilgrim to do when TSA is always trying to get between us and the trekking poles we love? Clearly these thugs are jealous of the bond but alas, you really cannot fly with them without checking them first. Sounds like a pain and a bit of a risk, but isn't that what pilgrimage is about...suffering?
Well it need not be a total pain and with today's tips, we'll streamline the process and do all that we can in an effort to get your trusty sticks there in one piece, and home again after your trip!
As always, any piece of gear mentioned (in theory) should be posted below! But if there is something I have forgotten do not hesitate to reach about and pick my brain: peregrino@shelltoucher.com

I wonder why you need to put the tube in the bag? Why not just tape the ends clothes and check it?

It’s easier to carry or strap to your pack and adds more security to the tube.😉 (but you could totally just check the tube if you want!)

P.s. Also, I ordered the toe tabio compression socks and half-liners. They took a looong time to dry…over 20 hours, LOL! I am going to try their hiking socks, in the hopes they will dry more quickly. P.p.s. Great idea for trekking poles! I may have to find a box for a backpack, in case I have to check it, as well!!!

20hrs? Towel roll them first, then hang to dry! But the silk half socks should dry relatively quickly due to their low density and ability to facilitate air circulation! Towel rolling is the secret to drying all your clothes faster on the Camino! Buen Camino!

@@ShellToucher314 Thank you! I did roll and squeeze them…but, I definitely could have done it more vigorously!

Re backpacks…I can’t find a backpack over about 20L, that is within the allowable carry-on dimensions of most International flights: 22x14x9. Not all airline agents are lenient. I’d love some guidance!

Honestly, there is some grey area in regard to carrying on a pack. I use a 45L Gregory Stout for example and never once had any issues. As long as it fits in the overhead I don’t see a problem nor have I heard of anyone having a problem with this. However, reach out to the airline first! You could always bring a laundry bag though just in case they ask you to check it! So fear not and Buen Camino!

@@ShellToucher314 Many thanks! I’m looking at a Gregory now, 28L, and it is only an inch over…so fingers crossed! I super appreciate your reply!

If you haven't purchased yet, there's Mountaintop 40L on Amazon which I used for my past 2 Camino trips as carry-on baggage which is within most airlines specifications. It has measurements of 21.7x13x7.9. It's pretty cheap but sturdy, YKK zippers and weighs 2.2lbs. I'll be going again with it in Sept when I do the Primitivo.

I found that the ikea bag referenced in the video fit my pack very well. It's relatively light and folks up fairly small. I stick it in the bottom of my pack for the walk.

@@ralston08 Wow! Thank you! I just bought the Osprey Tempest Velocity 30L…also 1 inch over 22x11x10….but it has a drawstring closure (ugh), that I think I can push down. It hasn’t arrived yet, and I can return to REI, if need be…so, I’ll look at the Mountaintop that you have had good luck with. Thank you! I’m doing last 100k on the Portuguese in August. Buen Camino!!
