  • Many people are asking, "when is it safe to travel again?" It's a good question, and one that will likely depend on certain indicators. In this video, I share my thoughts on what needs to happen before we can start traveling again, and how travel may be different after the pandemic.

      The idea of Sitting at home for a year is driving me crazy 😔if I need to wait until June 2021 to travel, I will get into depression soon. I look forward to my annual international trip, I bought things I needed for Petra, Jordan. My sun protection bootie is ready to go...now I might have to consider a Amtrak trip to Bryce canyon when its safe again to travel. I check on Hawaii, the hotels are 20 times more than Jordan and less history, less dramatic landscape 😞

    I live in a country where the virus is currently well under control, but borders are still closed and I was planning on visiting my old sick father living on the other side of the globe already well before this virus emerged. It's been well over a year since I last saw him and I miss him very much and he's currently all alone and I don't know how much time he has left... The country he lives in has very few cases but they're still not letting in foreigners so I was just hoping to get some information on whether planning a trip there even at the end of the year in November would be possible, but I can't find any information on that. This crisis is so frustrating.

      Hi Barbara! I am definitely still planning to do them. I have to be honest that I'm worried about the timing though -- I've been hesitant to release destination type videos right now since folks can't travel. Very informative. I do see that there is going to be more people that are willing to travel domestically before international travel even if there's going to be flareups. Ernest by December we will have forgotten all of this. We will party down on New Years! I am a germaphfob and people always thought I was nuts constantly washing my hands, this habit started in Iraq. If I was eating an MRE and a fly landed on the food I would stop and throw it out. To be honest, I haven't really changed my approach. Though I may need to reconsider when my Sapphire Reserve's annual fee is due in August. The only thing I changed was that I was going to upgrade my Amex Blue Cash Everyday to the Blue Cash Preferred, but I'm holding off for now since I'm spending a lot more on Costco at the moment. Otherwise, I'm still keeping my current cards ... but I'm definitely spending a lot less money lately!

    I’ll get beat up for this, but I’ll travel as soon as I have the chance. I’m flying in August, unless the plane doesn’t go. I’ll take precautions, I.e., wear my 😷, etc. I am not concerned, call me naive or what you will. I look at CDC metrics, and it’s noticeably effecting a certain group. I feel people who don’t feel comfortable should stay inside. That’s their choice and one no one should question. But, the argument of health vs people has to be discussed. What toll has this had on mental health, I.e., suicide rates, etc? No, I’m not insensitive to the risk. But, people are losing their livelihood and that has to be discussed. Ok. I’m prepped for what comes from social media. 😷

    I'm currently in The Bahamas, one of the few countries open to Americans, and I tell you things are very different. A negative COVID19 test is required for entry, almost all restaurants, shops, casinos, tours, and expeditions are closed, there's a 10 pm curfew, and there are very few tourists on the island. But there is an upside to it all. It's much more quiet and serene. There are very few people on the beaches. You get to really enjoy all the sites. And it's safe, because they've done a great job handling the pandemic. Trust me, if you're not wearing a mask, the locals will yell at you from their cars, so keep it on!

      Majority of countries are nowhere near in terms of infections like the over 1million here. Most nations have under 7-10k cases and they even test more like singapore,taiwan and colombia. Yet the US cant get testing for all and we have more global cases than most of the world combined. What is the point of living in the "best country in the world" when healthcare is literally worst than many less developed nations and even communist countries here,pathetic. Reality check.

    I think international travel will be one of the last things to be relaxed, just as it was one of the first things to be restricted. I don't think there will be much relaxation until there is a vaccine, so I'm not expecting to be able to travel internationally until sometime in 2021. After that, I have a feeling that there will be a 'new normal'. One suggestion is that there will have to be some sort of 'health passport' in order to be enter other countries, and this will be based on vaccination history and testing results.
    Our trip to the US see our daughter that was supposed to happen earlier this month was cancelled due to travel restrictions, but we've been able to recover all our costs (or pretty much all of them). We have a short cruise booked for December around the English Channel and North Sea (from Southampton, with calls at Hamburg, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge) but I'm not really expecting that to happen. We'll be pleased if we can travel to the US to see our daughter next spring, and maybe within Europe in late 2021. But for longer trips, e.g. back to Asia, I'm thinking early 2022.

      @@TripAstute Just to say that I'm beginning to hear stories about what might be another 'Gotcha!' for international travel, at least for UK residents. The travel insurance companies are apparently not covering Covid-19 risks when people are renewing their annual travel policies. Given that for the foreseeable future Covid-19 will be a significant risk for travellers, especially for older travellers, this will be a significant brake on the resumption of travel. I know that if I couldn't get insurance for to cover possible hospitalisation costs for Covid-19 treatment should it be required, I'd be very reluctant to travel to say, the US or to places in Asia. (The insurance companies may change their position once/if a vaccine becomes available, of course, for vaccinated travellers.)

    Cautiously optimistic outlook: Limited road tripping summer 2020, this ends in the fall with a second wave of the virus. By spring 2021, treatments open up domestic road, rail, and air travel, but it's still limited. This grows through to the end of 2021, when a vaccine becomes available. By mid-2022 life is mostly back to normal and international travel becomes possible.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  Před 4 lety

      That might very well be the case, though I'm hoping things get back to "normal" sooner. It's hard to tell at this point whether an effective treatment or vaccine will be discovered or even if the virus will result in multiple seasonal strains. 😬

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  Před 4 lety

      It's hard to say. It depends on whether the US can get their infection numbers under control and if there is an available treatment. August is still a few months ahead, so hopefully things will be under control by then.

      I think you should talk to your university about this. Right now it's definitely hard to tell how the US would fare in the later months, and a lot of universities are getting heavily impacted by this. Some schools are even considering extending their online classes well into the fall semester.
      If you haven't yet, you should definitely contact the university especially regarding program cancellation/rescheduling, visas, etc.

    I have a couple of trips on the calendar this summer, but haven't booked any flights yet. The event may get cancelled before I even decide if I'm going or not. I would only fly or go to a crowded destination if active cases are low and trending downwards. I wish I had a number I could put on it, but I haven't come up with one yet. I think we'll see more people take road trips and nature related trips. It allows you to travel, but also minimize risk. A huge factor on when people will travel is going to be largely based on if they can afford to travel. With so many people out of work right now, the budget might not be there for a trip.

    • @TripAstute
