- Will a cannon muffler actually increase power on your car? Or can you make more power with a Potato? In this episode we find out...
We did 3 dyno runs for each system, using the best figure from each set as comparison.

Also something to note around Mighty Car Mods: we are normal guys and are not trained mechanics. We like to make interesting car mods and show you how we've gone about it, but we can't promise that anything we show you will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car or your warranty doing it. Not that anyone will read this, but as a physics student, it could be that the potato is generating ring shaped vortices due to the tendency for high pressure regions to fall into low pressure regions like the back of the potato while exposed to moving air. This motion would generate a ring vortex going out the rear of the exhaust, which may actually help disrupt far more harmful turbulence caused by the exhaust gas meeting with the atmosphere. This is the same principle behind why golf balls have dimples. You are creating one form of turbulence to help negate another more destructive form of turbulence.
DjRjSolarStar so why no one of car makers didn't teak bit of time to develope perfect shape of "potato" from some kind of metal or what ever material. It looks like easy way to get more performance.
DjRjSolarStar. so potentially if you had the time and access to a dyno you could form spheres and figure out which shape would better suit your set up, Hard mount it in the exhaust and enjoy your gains. If your chasing hp/kw gains that is.
Engineers aren't the best at feeling things. They're great scientists, but in an overly scholar way, sometimes putting simple logic and gut feel on the back burner. That's my interpretation anyway.
DjRjSolarStar "no one's gonna read this"
because money and cost reductions, they dont need to make power by putting potato in the exhaust pipe, they need to pass emissions and keep the noise down
As an Irishman I am qualified to tell you that the potato makes more power because the leprechauns in it are friends with unicorns and provide a trade deal for more kilowatts
Dan So what would happen if the leprechaun is stinking drunk? I know what I'm doing for my science fair project.
I'm Irish and I totally agree
What do you mean 'if'?
up you go
Leprechauns can't get drunk they convert alcohol into lucky charms
This episode feels like a very old school MCM vid, which is perfect!
Armando Latour Agreed
Armando Latour you are so right
Armando Latour yes
I remember, I loved how they always found "pubes" in the cars they were modifying. Idk if they still say that today I haven't watched in a year but I loved old MCM.
Exactly what i was thinking!
Engineering Explained will be breaking out his whiteboard in 3...2...1...
Famous *Hello everyone and welcome*
Lmfaooo 👌
actually I would really be interested in that
Famous
I actually just asked him to explain it :)
Nah this is a job for Kyle and his CFD
This is old news guys, the Irish have been sticking Potatoes up their rear pipes for years!
Helicopter Pad :)
have a upvote good sir
Helicopter Pad and also cleaning their windscreen wipers!
Up you go...
"What mods have you done to the corrolla mate?"
"a potato"
do we have a new breed of car head?
The corolla owners are now known as potato mashers?
Nope potato heaters
Derek died
@@helmandkhan837 doh.
good for a solid 10% gain
An 8% increase on 50 KW isn't bad for the price of a potato
if you add sth like a metal ball it could actually be used
Maflon Could be worth testing
It might have something to do with the air generating a low-pressure zone because of the Venturi principle.
Time for you to test it!!
If you have water injection you could use a potato for ever.
potatoes for everyone
I thought they were gonna put a potato cannon on the back and shoot a potato out while driving to see if it boosted it...
I did too, which is why I didn't watch this for months, but here and now, I know, it was a valid point! I'm going to try this and make a video of it!
M*V = M*V so it would boost it but ever so slightly. The mass of the potato with respect to the system is teeny tiny.
Formula 1 engineers are now stuffing potatoes into their exhausts
Raucous Rashford They say Mclaren Honda are leading the tests
vespaavespa it then turned out that the potato was rotten so they are given a 15 place grid penalty for a power unit replacement
Yeah but only at McLaren
Is this honda engineering or what?
No...they are genetically engineering a carbon fiber potato...a traditional potato wouldn't make a race distance. I mean, how embarrassing would it be for them to have to say, "Box, Box. We need to change your potato."
I told my girlfriend I was going to sleep so I could watch this in peace
We've all done it mate. I do it even though she knows I don't sleep...
Fraser Hughes I do that too 🙋😂
Fraser Hughes shit I'm texting mine while I'm watching it's called multi tasking my friend.
You're doing it wrong, my friend..
Amd486 Microprocessor would be worth it
Totally loving how this feels like the MCM of years ago. While it's no longer a budget driveway show, you have once again captured the feeling of what made this show great. The new content is amazing and shows how things have grown, but this feeling is what drew me into MCM. Keep it up!
I had a 1986 Corolla twincam same body type, just older it was a brilliant little car had awesome fun with it.
Do you think the potato will fit my honda?
classic
Matt Gillot add stickers to the potato for 2 kw
Replace with peas where applicable.
Idk, will ur girlfriend come along?
You should probably decap your carrots for better fuel flow
Me: oh a new MCM episode *Reads title* The fuck...
Rick hurry the fuck up ive been waiting years for season 3
Dan Rick y is your name Dan now
Ryan Rick and Morty for 100 years!
I am not Dan Harmon
Or am I?...
Now thats a refreshing and funny intro :D
forreal!
Mighty car mods. I have been watching your videos since forever and this is the best intro you have ever done! well done.
Going to the store to buy a whole pack of potatoes. I'm line my whole exhaust system with these to make 800 hp
But it hurts
PotatoNugget 420 but think of all the skids!
Straight pipe too
and make potato salad when done. just put a net at the tail pipe so when they cook and break off you catch them.
George Cramer when they're cooked the insides are soft enough they break off. That's how you know they're done. That's so smart.
Imagine getting chopped by a car with a potato in the exhaust.
koeix2 id probably just sell my car
Best episode in a while! This is oldschool mcm! More plzzz!
We missed the old time episodes like this :D
Keep it up!
Thought this was a how to basic video by the little intro...
Two minutes in i was kind of wishing they parked in their mums driveway alongside a legacy and a small japanese hatchback
Moog is HTB confirmed
i noticed that
The're both from Down Under
Yota's are life hahahahahahaha
Yota's are life I busted a nut so hard to this video
All the dyno readings variations are most likely due to the engine computer adjusting itself, possibly oxygen sensors reading better after some high RPM runs burning off contaminants, fuel injectors cleaning themselves after high RPM runs, or many other possibilities.
I'd bet money that if they did multiple runs with the stock exhaust it would show the same variations.
I had to scroll way to long to find this!
yeah it happens all the time. they should have put the stock exhaust back on for the final run.
are you sure that this cars engine is so intelligent?
I would assume that the efi on that thing is a better carburator.
found the fun guy at parties... :P
Yes, these engines are intake MAF as stock, plus exhaust manifold recirculation and a CAT sensor all feeding back to the ECU.
Whatever different kit you used has made the sound go out of sink if your watching on an amazon fire stick. About 50% of all you tube videos are out, but yours, and Caseys were allways in synch. I know I sound crazy, but it is something I don't think a lot of tubers realise. Love your show, and been with you from the start. X
I love this car. I'm just happy finally seeing you two in Toyota.
is it 4kw per potato? i think we need a exhaust + potato = 4kw shirt.. just saying
"Put a potato in my cannon, and I'll go faster."
Simplify it a touch. Potato picture = +4kw :)
ubanoob
= 10% is more impressive and still almost accurate
d3mP5, almost accurate? Sorry, Caps locked your name, lol.
I like the oldschool feel of this episode! more please! bring back the miatas!!
please. there are to many miatas on youtube now days
yeah really fun, quick stuff
I don't care about Miatas, but I do love the old school flavour.
90's hatch back special..
They're called mx-5's m8
Great video, learned something new and had a bloody good giggle at the same time. Cheers, subbed.
This is super awesome!!!!! I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla. I'm so ready to see what you guys do.
potato is clearly a better option
Fuck yeah
S-Chassis FanBoy I'm about to potato my second gen Toyota Avalon
😂😂😂 Church St Spec, put that in sticker production.
Had to rewatch the intro, it was too perfect. :D
This was back to roots amazing!
newer mcm fans dont know whats up with the og mythbusting videos...
forget going to sleep now
Harrison Baker all is lost
back to the basics, this is what mcm is all about
Back to the cool stuff. Keep it up.
BEST SUNDAY I've had all week!!!
Will try to pay with a condom in the shop next time and see how that works out lol
Keep us updated.
ZeeWee Adventures just casually throw one in instead of a $5 bill or something lol
Bavarian Banshee He's already been arrested for suspected solicitation
loving the old school feel of this video. please do more.
Ahhh it's so refreshing to have you guys get back to the old days of myth busting and or how to vids.!
best intro ever!
In a parallel universe people are stuffing exhaust into their potatoes to the same effect :D
In a parallel universe.. they are using potato to get stock gains.
Did you see the HP drop using the potato 😮?
On CZcams pages ..POTATO GAINS FOR DAYZ..
That's a throwback to the old MCM and I love it
Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!! As much as I loved your Hollywood high production valued car shows with your team of experts, all i wanted was more low end diy vids for normal users!! please more with cheap cars and experimental stuff! reminds me of the good ole days
Maybe thrashing full throttle cleaned the engine pathways a bit. Giving it more power each try 😅
thought so as well. They should've given the car an italian tuneup before testing.
Or they could have put the stock muffler back on at the end.
Yes please. I'm fairly sure they would have gotten the same increase with stock after the engine got sorta back in shape. Shame. :(
at 0:12 in - i would laugh my arse off if someone put that in a wad of cash they were giving me.
Schmidt Head Productions I was buying some weed in a coffeeshop once, and it was 20 euros, which was exactly the content of my wallet so I pulled it out and handed it to the dude, but I accidentaly also grabbed the condom I had there and he just looked kinda baffled thinking I was soliciting for sex or something hahahhaha
i counted out a bagy of meth when i was paying 4 a boat. oops!
That was the best intro of any mighty car mods episode that I've ever seen
i am glad ypur doing this car. its a similar version of ae91 92 ee90 and people dont know post of the small easy mods to do. this will help.
i'm a huge fan of toyota, and i hope you two make more videos with toyotas.
Toyotas, the older ones are the better
I like toyotas too and all, but corollas like this dont have much potential past going smash up derby/beiing a paddock bomb
Theyve done quite a few toyotas in the past already :p
We need to get "Engineering Explained" on this ASAP haha. Upvote so it gets noticed!!
Chris RW defo need him and his whiteboard right about now because i am baffled
Chris RW magnaflow
Chris RW not apply to turbo engine
He actually commented in on someone else bringing him up, that the potato is a mystery to him. I may be able to help solve the conundrum. If it isn't just an improvement on the aerodynamics for the exhaust exiting the tail pipe with less turbulence, then it's actually causing back pressure. If it wasn't just mist from it being the cold season for them when they shot this, that Corolla, was burning a little oil, it's engine was a bit too loose, and when it was given back pressure it helped.
I think we'd get closer to the truth with a test on a healthier, younger engine, to see if this just increases power for worn old engines.
Awesome old skool MCM stuff right here!
Awesome to finally see you guys in a Corolla!!
Forget the potato, just connect a vacuum to your tailpipe. Perhaps an array of Dysonz?
Zero back pressure, maximum power!
(actually, Honda F1 engines used low pressure in the crankcase? to obtain their ridiculous high RPMs)
MCM filmed with a potato confirmed
I'm not really into cars but you guys make watching car mod shows interesting
Straight pipe is best pipe
Please do more vids about the corolla! I've owned one
greatest yt vid ive watched all year
This is your best work ever!!!
I'd like to think i would have been named after a better car. But i'll take it.
This would be a good one for Engineering Explained to explain
loved the intro, nice touch
A classic MCM. I'm loving it. Hope Rake does too.
you should buy a massive garage to put all your creations in
Screw notification squad. I'm in youtube all the time.
Love the old fashioned MCM video. Do more!
Get a Mazda 6 MPS next! There are so few quality videos about that car, it would be a blast! Keep up the amazing vids guys!
MCM Potato pipe > Engine Masters
haha coz now we suddenly want all exhaust pipe knowledge in the world.
can you test de-cat too?
They are in the land down under which seems to be super strict on emissions but it would make more power as all any if this except the potato (I know nothing about that) is doing is removing restrictions to do this on a newer car with (I believe 99 it 2k and up) you wouldn't see a change without a tune
Love the Corrolla, because I have the same car here in the Philippines, but it is a sedan. Hope you would mod it, those cars looks very good, and they are very popular in our car culture. Thank you for making awesome videos as always.
Loved the video fellas!
I had one of these as my first car just wished I'd know about the power of potato when I was on my P's.
You should try my exhaust set-up: Rusted out muffler
If only Ubisoft would make cars... Those servers will make supercars.
Want in on a secret? Ubisoft games run serverless online. At most you get a catalog or matchmaking server, and that's it, and some random player becomes the actual server, or everyone just shoots messages at each other willy nilly and there's no central authority to say who is right at all. And then there's more incompetence layers on top, like TCP, who uses TCP to relay position updates? It's just a recipe for congestion and communication failure. Yeah Ubisoft does.
Please do a follow-up on the power of the potato.
Lol dat intro!!! Always putting out great vids!!!
this series is gonna be dope , missed the raw mcm 💗👏😂
Wait, WTF... That potato shouldn't do anything but add back pressure... How... No... My brain...
funny that, N/A kinda rely's on backpressure to create power.
if that were the simplified case, the original muffler would have made the best power, because of its backpressure....
NA don't rely on backpressure. Please research more. XD
NA does compared to a turbo where you want free flowing. please do your own research first
No, they don't.
Hahaha loved the potato mod... The science and I believe most of the guys here knows this.... but for those who don't.... the potato helped create enough back pressure to generate a siphoning effect in the low to mid rpm range. So the piston doesn't need to push the gasses out in the mid rpms... at low rpms, it helps create a vacuum in the piston that will help suck in air as the valves open... similar to longer runners on your intake manifold, it helps speed up air going in, thus more air and the turbulence in the manifold helps mix the air and fuel thus better power in the low RPM.... But note this is different when your engine is revving high. Turbulence will now make air move slower and back pressure will mean the engine needs to push the air harder... That is why everyday cars have long intakes and restrictive exhaust because it runs more or less 1000 to 3500 rev range only while race prep cars run around 5000 to 10000 rev range. This is why sport bikes have a automatic cutout exhaust valve that is controlled by the bike's ecu to control the flow of the exhaust by creating back pressure as needed...
Speaking of.... that would be a great project... ecu controlled exhaust cutout valve :) not sure though if it can be opened and closed like a throttle...
some Porsches(valvetronic) and BMW(valve control) do this, but I think its mostly to sound cool
Frederick John Teng The scavenging you are talking about is due to exhaust gas velocity and is the opposite of back pressure. Back pressure making more power is a misconception of how scavenging works.
Hi JDB, yup, I know... Sorry if I wasn't able to explain it properly... back pressure is needed to a degree to create a siphoning effect. This siphoning is caused by the vacuum created by the escaping gasses to my understanding. Since the escaping gasses have more velocity than air going in, it will help the air that is going in to accelerate. Again that is to my understanding. That is why it is harder to drink from a large straw than a smaller straw when you are trying to drink the last few drops of your drink.
loving the Carolla,I drive a 99 Tercel myself and love the Toyota stuff! watching here in NFLD Canada
Best episode EVER!
try this on a turbocharged car!
wheres the mira build
Reminds me of your older videos, make more of these!
THE BEST MCM SO FAR!!!!!
everybody let's put potato on our exhaust to make us look fast
What happend to the Mira build
julian Moyses i think they are waiting on parts
YES! More 1992 Toyota Corolla videos, maybe get an SX model? I've got one in Victoria that you can have, nothing wrong with it just needs a clean and the spoiler refitted.
i don't care about cars but i'm hook by the fun i get watching you ^^
I think the answer lies in turbulent vs laminar flow. Think of jet engines on fighter planes when they use afterburners. In this case you can see the laminar flow of exhaust gasses as they escape with very little disturbance. This picture can help you understand i.ytimg.com/vi/CH0-d1udXWY/maxresdefault.jpg
I'm sure the car was just running better as it warmed up each run... right? Right guys?
Adam Bleech yes lol
Without multiple runs and a set cool down between each, these results are essentially useless. Still, it was a fun video.
Adam Bleech i wonder if the heavy runs cleaned up the injectors as it might have been babied and ru. in cheap fuel a lot before they got it.
Put in some decent fuel amd the power should start going up gradually with the injectors cleaning themselves and the EFI taking some time to adjust its timing for the better fuel.
I thought it had something to do with helping the back pressure that goes back into the valve because of exhaust pulse. But I can see why you had your idea too. Good work
And that, my friends, is the sound of nostalgia. 90's Corolla with a cannon exhaust takes me back to some of the best days of my life so far
Everyone go buy a single potato.
rubioo93 But I have dual exhaust...
Ben Klassen then buy 2...
Derek the potato nugget.
Great Video More like these please
great starting
67 BHP
68 BHP
68 BHP
72 BHP
yammer5 Thank you. That's the only thing I hate about the video, I don't know the dam conversion.lol
Not all heroes wear capes.
1.341 kw = 1 hp
1kw=1.36hp
An easier way to remember the conversion is the Koenigsegg One:1. It produces 1 Megawatt of power, which is 1000 Kilowatts, or 1360 horsepower.
Someone who can get a message through to "engineering explained" please ask for an explanation of why this works like this.
Haha great video guys!
Please do this car up. I am thinking of buying on and want to see what they're like done up to the max
Hotter dyno's often read a little higher, so I suspect if they did the potato first it wouldn't have won. Also I suspect the pipe diameter in all the tests are too large, therein causing a velocity change between the main exhaust and the pipe you where swapping.
The guys they take there stuff to do this for a living they trimmed down the video so they don't show them driving on the dunk to warm it up or the multiple runs on each exhaust,I can ask so see if you were thinking it cooled down when they were changed my exhaust. But otherwise I don't really see an issue
On the dyno not on the dunk lol
