Fr why are guys acting like the $ is coming out of their pocket lmao. Also, he’s only making $2m a year and the rest is deferred, which means the Dodgers get to make money on him up front while he’s still playing and in his prime, and then use that to pay the bulk of the contract later. Which means they’re not going to be operating at any loss from him. It’s a great deal for the Dodgers, since $ is always worth more now than later.

What a 180 degree turn around, within 3 days?!?!? Capitalism says that if someone is willing to pay, then he deserves it. It is just that simple ... and it turns out this is THE most team-friendly contract in the MLB history. In a perfect scenario (that Shohei stays healthy and does Pitching & hitting for multiple years), Dodger just collect all the profit Shohei Ohtani generated over the 10 years and maybe use part of it to pay Shohei after his contract is done!

Actually might be a bargain for the Dodgers. The present day value of the deal is in the $460 million range due to almost all of it being deferred. Add to that all his off the field value he brings the Dodgers. It's not as high a price as it first sounds. Imagine getting around $50 million for the next 10 years (mostly endorsements) and then $70 million a year for 10 years after that? I wouldn't even know how to spend that kind of money.

We haven't seen him pitch in person yet, so hopefully, we'll get a chance to see him next year when Dodgers come to town. Stephen asks why are athletes in America not paid as much as mega-stars abroad. Well, that's because they're soccer players and soccer has a larger market globally than do any North American sport. The main reason for that is because they have international competition. And the epitome of that is the World Cup. So, in short, soccer pays better than baseball because they have the WC as a major marketing tool for advertising and baseball doesn't. That's why MLB should embrace the WBC more than they do now! In a couple a decades, baseball can have a larger market than soccer if they invest more on international competition.

Sorry you r 50% right. the reality is that the average salary of north American sports leagues is still higher than the big 5 football leagues in Europe. Somehow the footballers salary is more diversified because of lack of players union n collective bargaining agreement. That makes the rich footballers are very rich, poor players are very poor( relatively).

Messi was basically prime Jordan and Ronaldo prime Lebron. We can actually calculate what those two would make right now if they were 25 years old and the league had absolutely no restrictions on payroll. The highest payroll ever was the Warriors at 485 million a year (they had 785 million in revenue so that would be legal under European FFP rules). But because of the ridiculous restrictions on salary around 200 million of that 485 million went towards luxury tax. If a team had prime Jordan or Prime Lebron a payroll around 550 million (on the Lakers or Warriors) would be reasonable considering the extra revenue they would bring in .so if they gave 250 million to Jordan a year that would leave 300 million left to fill out the roster. Some team would happily do that. Lebron would likely get 200 million a year. Basketball is the only sport where if you remove one player the team can go from the best in the league to the worst. Which is exactly what happened when prime Lebron left Cleveland the first time. So if the same financial FairPlay rules in place in Europe were in place in the USA (you can spend all the revenue you bring in on players) then Jordan would get around 10 years 2.5 BILLION and Lebron around 10 years 2 billion.

Batting average means jack shit, but he won't regress that badly until the last year or so of the contract, lol.
      And he's making 2M a year, lol.

No one deserves $700 million. Unless you are saving lives. GDP of South Sudan is $430 million, 10 million people. This is what is wrong with society. Just saying.

It turns out Dodgers may have Shohei for free. He only takes 2 million a year, and he will generate tens of millions every year ... Dodger will just collect those money and pay off Shohei when his contract is done!!!
