Canada reinstating visa requirements for Mexican citizens as asylum claims soar

  • Mexican citizens will once again need a visa to come to Canada after asylum claims from citizens of the country have soared over recent years.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller made the announcement in Ottawa on Thursday morning, revealing the requirement will be in effect as of 11:30 p.m. (ET) that evening.
Queried about the seemingly sudden decision, Miller said that the federal government has not “necessarily been a tightly-guarded system” and that their goal with such a short window was to mitigate more “bad actors” from “abusing the system.”
Miller said that among all nationalities, asylum claims from Mexican citizens in Canada accounted for 17 per cent of the overall claims in 2023 alone.
The announcement will not apply to Mexicans who hold a valid work or student visa, and Mexicans with a U.S. visa will still be able to travel to Canada without a visa.

Mexicans were never an issue so many employers loved laying high paid employees off to get these guys working for cash. The corporate and private greed loves exploiting cheap labor. Just something the CONservatives won't be happy with once it effects the companies they back. A lot of construction companies backed by conservatives will be like yo we need more cheap labor make a new bill reducing pay or get us more rights to do as we unethically please. More proof conservative backers don't fully align with conservative outlooks. The average conservative is anti LGBTQ but the party has a few elected members openly gay. The west disagrees with the east. Get your party together 😂

Some mexicans want to travel to a country that is not Latin America choose Canada because to get a US you need an income above average for any mexican. There are college professionals that make roghly 500 usd a month. This are educated people with no means to migrate just want to do tourism and obviously cant afford to go Europe or other continent. Canada is literally their only option since their income doesent qualify for US visa. I know some family members will get down by this news, they were just planing a summer trip. Now they will probably go to Colombia or Argentina and spend their money there. I know you canadians dont care about this little Mexican money staying in canada. Good luck with that you need out Canadian tourist dollar for every 14 peso equals to one Canadian dollar. Even people that don’t pay taxes pay a lot into tourism. If Mexico was China where the dollar is closer to the American dollar and an enconomy willing to buy from you (though you need Chinese investors). Sure Mexico will need to establish a visa. Mexico is not a super power country. The Mexicans immigrating to Canada know it very well. I know Mexicans who own many Mexican houses unable to upkeep $2000 monthly rent.

    • @hpp2021
      @hpp2021 Před 4 měsíci +2

@ThatGmoney Hi my friend, you are right in many aspects yet, what I mention still holds true. It's a two way street. Many Mexicans abusing your system is not good as increases your already high taxes in Canada. Canadians here not paying taxes also gentrifies our cities, so it's not good for us locals either, you actually mention some Mexicans who can't pay the rent in our own country. Indeed the Canadian dollar is strong but so is your cost of living, hence Canadians come here. And although Mexico is not a Super power, from a geopolitical standpoint, it's presence (political, economic/nearshoring- and cultural) is definetly felt in north america, particularly now that the US has a rivalry with China.

Until 2020 (pandemic), most lifelong Canadians would have proudly & quickly said Canada is a great place. For multiple generations (young & old). It still is in many ways. But like all countries, a bunch of things have made life more difficult lately.
During the COVID lockdowns, many people in apartments (or major cities) went wild wanting to buy homes everywhere (urban & rural). Increasing demand and rising prices. Not long after, inflation caused mortgage rates especially to rise. Rent costs have soared too.
People interested in working in hospitals declined. Less doctors etc..
Simultaneously in Canada, the number of people coming by air, land and boat to claim asylum SKYROCKETED. For example, in 2023 alone, in just one region (Ontario) around 300 people arrived per day (on average). Ditto for other populated provinces. Also the number of international students skyrocketed too. Averaging around 1,000 per day in 2023 alone.
Hospitals then hit with many wanting free healthcare. Less doctors/nurses etc., means greater waiting times.
A severe housing crisis has occurred in many western countries including in Canada. In ways not seen in people's lifetimes.
The majority trying to migrate to Canada recently have been from South Asia. And it's become extremely obvious to Canadians. Even those that are very used to much diversity & many cultures. Neighborhoods now know that most international students are primarily seeking a ticket to come to Canada for PR. No one says it in public amongst strangers, but everyone knows because they've witnessed the extreme PR frenzy firsthand by now.
Bottom-line. Now westerners want greedy people in other countries to stop marketing/lying to their own people about access to PR or citizenship … or accommodation/jobs … being easy (to get). And for greedy westerners in the mix to be ashamed of themselves for hurting students.
Not all players across the board have acted honestly over the years, i.e. false asylum claims, contract marriages (IELTS spouse), anchor babies, fraud. 'Agents' doing things to make $ off of people's PR desires or desperation. Canada has asked the India government to prevent “ghost consulting”. Private colleges are being investigated (including for foreign interference). Some not respecting Canadian ways (harmony).
Then this year throw in all the Palestinian vs Israeli angry protests happening regularly in cities. Plus the Sikh vs Hindu violence/extortion primarily happening in Ontario and BC. Plus the Canadian government also recently launched investigations in regards to foreign interference in Canadian elections. All stemming from Asia continent. Hate crimes have gone from rare to occasional.
Canadians are not used to all this. So many, who have embraced multi-culturalism and immigration for decades are now worried and fearful (due to all of the above). And all are praying it doesn't turn into great anger (like in the USA).
Canadians want multi-culturism to succeed … and for all people to be okay. Everyone I know is HAPPY with Canada Immigration's recent changes (reductions). Including multi-generation long-term Asian Canadians.

I think we need a large population though undeniably. The British didn't allow Immigration because they were afraid we would go independent like America.
Our country is seriously limited by our small population. California has a larger population than we do lol.
That being said, we shouldn't stray from having immigrants from "rich" countries aswell honestly.
Immigrants are hard workers, but too much of them from poorer backgrounds, can be a burden on our public services.
Im indian mysel, but someone from Japan/Korea is gonna be well off and less of a strain on public services, than someone from India.
We shouldn't forget there's a bunch of people from the USA, Asia, Australia, UK, Sweden, and whatnot, who would love to move here.
Also it would be good for the culture too. Too much of one nationality in Canada would be pretty bad for diversity reasons.
Also why tf dont we have more Americans moving here?? Were literally neighbours and extremely similar already.

As I Mexican/American who holds two citizenship will as my fair share of this new visa requirement for Mexican citizens.
    1. There are Canadians & Americans who take advantage of visa free travel to Mexico. They’ll work remotely in Mexico without applying for a residence visa & try to stay as long as they can. Also that basically means that they don’t pay taxes.
    2. There’s a numerous amount of American & Canadian tourist who have stayed undocumented in Mexico.
    3. Where’s the evidence of people who hold Mexican passports that committed the illegality? As many asylum seekers might be undocumented & will lie about their countries citizenship.
    4. This problem could’ve been solved & dealt with if both countries were that committed.
    Canada’s defense.
    1. They should not only pick on Mexico but on other nationalities as well.
    2. Work with US officials in preventing firearms get to the US-Mexico border.
    3. This first pointed I added should apply to all other nationalities.

Thank you! I worked at a legal cannabis processing facility in the GTA that hired 20 illegal Mexicans that worked 60 hour weeks. The owners then cut our hours and then eventually let go of all the citizens and caused a crap ton of drama. The owners were also supplying them with housing... it was a win win for them and a total disaster for us. I'd love to share my story on Global News if you are interested.
