Really sorry for your loss young fella. The bird boxes are a great idea for our native birds of prey . Give yourself a few weeks before you start wondering what went wrong. Sorry if this next bit is to soon but If you have mesh on her aviary then my bet is she’s tried to grab at something through the mesh and whatever she’s grabbed has pulled away and stripped the flesh on her leg/ foot. I changed my mesh on my barn owl aviary for that reason as that exact same thing happened to a friend’s tawny owl . 😢
Shit man... lost my first ever kestrel when I was first starting. He was such a sweet bird. Losing a bird is one of the worst feelings in the world, super sorry for your loss and I know exactly how it feels. Hope you feel better soon. Loss sucks. Hi Dan I took on 2 Harris hawks for pest control job i do. I always said i would never get attached to them. It's not possible you get attached and i think i understand your pain. I have to take one of them to the vets tomorrow i think she has wing tip oedema. I'm beside my self with worry. Sorry to hear of your loss hart breaking !.

mate, this has made me cry. Sylvia our daughter lost her first bird 2 years ago. Sirius was the most gentle barn owl. He was 6. she went into his aviary to man him and he just keeled over and died. she now has 3 owls in our garden. but we will never forget our Sirius. thinking of you
Sorry to see this Dan, take that notion out your head thats its "just a bird" it wasn't, you were tuned in to each other and that is special, such a rare thing is to have a close trusting bond with a bird, but when it happens its magical. You will have it again at some point, be patient. I had it last winer/summer with a male Robin the female was a little more carful, not as trusting as the male(bobby) this little fella would come into my kitchen, sit next to me on the chair in my garden singing away and id whisle tunes back to him, he'd watch my dog walk past underneath him, like he knew he was safe, they made a nest right next to my patio doors in some ivy, reared 5 chicks in may, come September he just vanished, i called him for day's after (he knew his name..lol) but he never came. The female is still in my garden and sits on an ornament on my pati, it know my routine and seems to know when im out of bed in the morning so when i walk in the kitchen shes the first thing i see, she stares those beedy eyes right at me looking for a peice of cheese or some meal worms. I never let the birds in my area/garden go hungry. I had a male in my gargen last week and thought is this bobby? I called, but it seem to go over its head, ill just keep working with the female, the bond is almost there, she doesn't fly off in a panic when i approach her, soon as i drop a snack and walk away, she jumps down right away. Birds are my life, from wrens to swans i adore them all, especially birds of prey, the exitment of a sparrowhawk in my gargen still blows me away with exitment, i see a buzzard everyday when i take my dog out, where you came with the steppe eaglet, castle Bromwich gardens, i keep checking the info board, but not seen you booked in yet, i hope you come again in the future! ❤️🪶🦉🦅
Ghana the Steppe eagle is all grown up now and well and truly in his grumpy teenager phase. Robins are fascinating little animals, so small and delicate with such a tiny brain yet there seems to be so much going on in their heads. My aunty had a connection with robins and the day of her funeral I sat in the garden and one came and landed right on my hand, I actually have a video of it on my phone. I’ve been to the castle Bromwich hall gardens quite a lot, it’s always advertised on a website called Eventbrite, I’m actually there tomorrow evening at half 5 for an owl evening, if you send a message to the Mercer Falconry Facebook page I’m sure we can squeeze another person onto the booking!
Tough times. You always ask your self where did you wrong and what could you do better. It's always like that when you are responsible for life. I lost my sparrowhawk couple of days ago. It is hard.
I am so sorry for you loss, what a beautiful companionship and life your barn owl and you have had, may the pain ease with time, and celebrations of her life may be had, a true gift to the land and her f fellow barn owls. Oh Dan, what a sad sad news to hear my friend😢 I lost my Barn owl 4 weeks ago because someone felt the need to cut open his aviary and just killed him for no reason. My Barn Owl called Irwin was just like you're bird the start of my business and he was the favorite bird for everyone that ever met him. He did weddings, kids birthdays, displays en he did it with so much fun. If Barn owls could smile he was smiling every day. It's so tough to deal with the loss and I wish you all the love and support to give you're loss a place. You will never forget her! Bless you❤
I lost my wood owl last year. Its hard not to blame yourself and to think what you could have done differently. The best way to put it, that bird had the best life she had - a life she wouldnt have had in the wild. Stay strong Dan. Do what you must to grieve.

losing a bird is always a rough experience. you're much stronger than us for getting through this and being able to share this news. kit has been such an incredible bird, and helped to get me into falconry in the first place. take as much time as you need to recover, and i look forward to seeing this project take off -- along with the barn owls, kestrels, tawny owls, kites, sparrowhawks, and many many more fledglings that make their home in those boxes.
i've always been a bit of a silent viewer, but I've learned so much from your channel and I've really come to love the fascinating and wonderful creatures you've introduced us to. i'm _so_ sorry for your loss! losing a furry or feathered friend is always so heartbreaking, they're truly members of the family. of course it's not the same as having her with you still, but at least you'll always have those happy memories with her and pictures/videos to revisit. A similar thing happened to me; I work at a small business and our kestrel died recently, completely unexpected I think I met kit once, it was a few years ago but you came up to hopwood hall college to teach us about birds of prey for part of a summer course, and I got to hold her as you talked about her I think. Again, I'm so sorry, you and her will be in my heart ❤️

WTF! How could you make such a horrible comment like this? The lad is clearly heartbroken, the loss of his Barn Owl (kitt), an integrated part of his business, and a true friend. This is the same as losing a dog, but with the additional trauma of seeing in such pain and distress with a horrific injury, he done all he could to try and get the Owl sorted and fixed, vets aint cheap, when your attached to something you love you throw all you can at it to keep it in your life even if if runs into ££££'s. That's what love for a pet will do. I couldn't see any form of begging in this vlog, he's clearly got an idea to help the birds of prey in an around his area, especially Barn Owls with supplying decent nest boxes for them to breed, they do so well in captivity, but rare in the wild, which is a shame. so you can't knock him for wanting to improve Barn Owl numbers. Quality boxes come at a cost, they have to last for many season's of British weather, so why not ask his subscribers if they want to help, he wasn't insisting that you have too, it was a option to join and help if you want to. I've chatted to Dan briefly while he was over my area at Castle Bromwich Gardens with a young Steppe Eaglet, I could tell straight away that he was genuine and in so much love for what he does, there's no way that he's a begger, he's to decent to do such a thing!
