Day 191: The Eucharist Changes Us - The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

  • This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress.com/CIY)
As the popular adage goes, “you are what you eat.” The Catechism tells us that, as food nourishes the body, so Jesus present in Holy Communion nourishes the soul. It especially highlights the Eucharist’s role in separating us from sin. Fr. Mike reminds us we must be open to change if Jesus is going to change us in the reception of Holy Communion. If-to use Fr. Mike’s analogy-Holy Communion is a “shower” of graces, we must ensure that we’re not wearing a raincoat. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1391-1395.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. The Holy Communion increases our union with Christ and with his Church. It preserves and renews the life of grace received at Baptism and Confirmation and makes us grow in love for our neighbour. It strengthens us in charity, wipes away venial sins, and preserves us from mortal sin in the future. When we receive Jesus, let us beg Him for an openess to change 🙏

  • @eduardohoover2127

When I was Baptist 1992-2008 I believed once saved always saved and when Jesus died all my sins past present and future were forgiven me for the righteousness of Jesus was imputed to me and I was perfect without blemish ready for the Kingdom of God through Christ Jesus and this was somehow taught in scripture. But now that I'm Catholic I see that much of their teaching was not so much false but fill in the blank and not really sola scriptura and sola fedelis.
Today I learned that the Eucharist not only wipes away venial sin but it keeps me from mortal sin which I didn't know. I keep doing the things I know I ought not do and not doing what I ought because I never connected the dots. In Confession in the Act of Contrition I would say by Your grace and the aid of our Blessed Mother Mary to do penance I would not futher sin and avoid the near occasion of sin. I wonder why we are not taught to in addition say, "And through the participation in the Eucharist prevent me from sinning unto death?" Now I know we don't have to follow verbatim, word for word, a script of the Act of Contrition. We can say at the minimum, "I don't want to go to hell." It is because by saying this we are choosing the better choice of the Kingdom because there are but two choices: Life and Death. There is no multiplicity of choice of the matter when it comes to Mother Church. I on the other hand will stick to the spiel of the Act of Contrition because I feel safe from anxiety of did I say enough but maybe I will now add, "And through the Eucharist prohibit me from falling into sin again."
Now there is another Sacrament that resolves mortal sin and that's the Anointing of the Sick but you have to be ill with the possibility even remote it could lead to death because we can't foretell the future that maybe one could die. I wouldn't recommend someone to out of hypochondria to partake of the Anointing of the Sick often. I like to call it the "Fred Sanford Syndrome" for those who remember the popular sitcom in the 70's with Redd Fox, the actor.
An interesting story, when I first came to the Baptist Faith during a tent revival I fasted for three days while I helped in grouling work to clear the woods to set up tents of meeting. I was famished in my flesh but I felt good spiritually. I was voraciously and I mean voraciously, feverishly reading the Bible and when there was a call to go up for their Anointing of the Sick I went up to receive it. They looked at me puzzled and ask if I was sick and I replied no I just want to know my sins are forgiven like in James. So they without hesitation anointed me and a few others. Whether that was valid or not I do not know but a priest told me it wasn't but strange as it is I still can feel the stamp of the oil upon my forehead, for whatever reason from time to time and I then become attentive to the Spirit.

I liked your explanation; because: I used to be Pentecostal; almost the same as Baptist; and so, now I have it in writing; how to combat wrong revelation. I will cut and paste it to my personal files. Your post will be a blessing for future ex-Baptists/Pentecostals. This is just absolutely gold. You went through the fire; so now you can shine; and tell others how your lamp got lit. Thank you for this essay.
My take: I know why - you can still feel the anointing of the oil: You feel it because: you were under the scent of the hunting dog to find you; to make you a Catholic. God put his Holy Spirit scent on you; so that Kaleb can find you. Kaleb in Hebrew translates to dog; - man's best friend. Jesus said: that his disciples are his friends; which is - why he laid down his life for his friends; as a dog would. Dogs are given a negative connotation; but I changed that; because: I while back I wrote about; the woman who Jesus called a dog. That sounds so terrible. But I defended Jesus; as - always.

The Eucharist unites us ever more intimately to Christ. This communion is the principal fruit of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
It “preserves, increases, and renews the life of grace” which we received at Baptism (CCC 1392). Just as material food nourishes us to grow physically, the Eucharist provides essential nourishment so that we can grow in our spiritual life.
It separates us from sin by strengthening us in charity. The Eucharist washes away past venial sins and strengthens us against committing sins in the future.
“The Eucharist makes the Church” (CCC 1396). When we are united to Christ in the Eucharist we are also united more closely to all other members of his mystical body, the Church. This sacrament that is the “sign of unity” and “bond of charity” (St. Augustine) also inspires us to pray ever more fervently for the unity of all Christians, as Christ himself prayed on the night he instituted this sacrament (see John 17).
In our reception of the Eucharist we are committed to the poor and enabled to recognize Christ in those most in need. The Catechism quotes St. John Chrysostom in explanation: “You have tasted the Blood of the Lord, yet you do not recognize your brother, …. You dishonor this table when you do not judge worthy of sharing your food someone judged worthy to take part in this meal” (quoted in CCC 1397).

Father, thank you for your clear explanations and your infectious enthusiasm. I feel I should be able to distinguish mortal from venial sins but I still have difficulty with sins that are so common even in Catholic society. The more I study my faith, the more conscious I am of how great a sinner I am.

Day 191 takeaways: The Eucharist changes us. Holy Communion augments our relationship with Jesus Christ from just claiming Him as our personal Lord and Savior to actually having an intimate relationship with Jesus. Holy Communion wipes away any venial sins and preserves us from future mortal sins. We can receive Jesus and remain unchanged if our disposition is lacking in openness to change to do God’s will. The life we lead is not our life but Christ who lives within us.
The only way we know love and caring is through our body - feeding, clothing, saying “I love you.”. So God is love and He communicated this love for us through the miracle of the Incarnation. God took on a body so we could know His love for us in Jesus who gave His life for expiation of our sins. Before Jesus left this Earth He gifted us with the Eucharist that actually BECOMES HIS BODY AND BLOOD. What material food provides in our bodily life, Holy Communion achieves in our spiritual life. With Holy Communion it’s Christ’s light and love that shines through us. Holy Communion wipes away venial sins. It is MEDICINE FOR SINNERS, not a REWARD FOR BEING PERFECT. The Holy Eucharist strengthens us to withstand the temptations of mortal sin. However, it is NOT magic nor Popeye’s spinach. The closer we are to Jesus, the harder it is to break away from Him in mortal sin. The Eucharist is not ordered for them forgiveness of MORTAL sins. You give medicine to people who are SICK, not to people who are DEAD. God wants to meet us in our need and our brokenness, but there is a proper way, first in the great Sacrament of Reconciliation.

But just to be sure confession with a contrite ❤is the best remedy to be in communion with Christ the King 👑 and to be double positively sure wear your scapular.... you'll be set with our Queen

St. Gregory of Nyssa, around AD350 wrote an excellent explanation of how when we eat bread and wine, they are transformed into our body, but when we consume the eucharist we become Christ's body. This of course is what Paul meant when he said we are one body because we all partake of the one loaf. Anyway, Joe Heschmeyer of Catholic Answers did a great talk on this at a Catholic Answers conference. Here is the link: czcams.com/video/j6xwiRwN8UQ/video.html

Please pray for Souls in Purgatory. Go ahead, just take about 30 seconds to help save a soul that maybe is your family member or friend! Go forth and help save! Here is the prayer:
(According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.)
    The Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
Amen.
God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

I found gold with you. The only thing - is that gold in its original state is; not beautiful. So, God purifies our - hearts and then all the black layers; melt away or; - DROSS; and the new creature in Christ is shining; like gold! People make mistakes, but God does not make mistakes; when he created us to His beautiful Heart, the priest's hands are included; - EXCLUSIVITY, the most beautiful of the creations. I have a holy figurine with praying hands - and I have just realized: the honor of the priests changing the bread to the Heart of Jesus. Oh, Priests: To be standing portals of God; when he goes through your hands and changes; the Wine and Bread; to Jesus's Sacred Heart. He does that to us too; - as in Ezekiel 36:26
When you take a STAND; for what is right, (righteousness,) the word "stand" means in Latin; that you are NOT ALONE; BUT INTIMATE; in carrying the cross. From One Cross; - came 2 billion Christians around the world today; THE INCLUSION...but the Bible says THE INCLUSIONS ARE NOT IT; ONLY THE EXCLUSIVE INTIMATES; QUOTE:
"EXCEPT those who are in the Lamb's Book." So, don't look at big numbers: look at Calvary which is: - only one person who died alone or; THE EXCLUSIVE INTIMACY.
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and GIVE you a heart of FLESH. 36:26

Title: Adam the worm - and Jesus the Butterfly
1)In heaven; in primordial times there was just God. Rays came out - like the sun. There was one ray reserved for the VM; and one for Jesus Christ; the narrow way vs the Highways to the Man mountains; since God also created the devil; who rebelled. Matt 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road - highway; that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
These two important narrow Highways: rays of Light - are infusions; pulsating in and out of God; the Son of God; and the VM. The VM witnessed the creation of mountains. The contrast is that; there was Jesus Christ crucified not on these mountains; but on Calvary mountains. Satan rules the world; so, he is of that plane; the Man mountains; THE ABYSSE.
    My old essay:
2)THE PERSECUTION OF THE INVISIBLE VIRGIN MARY; IN SOCIETY IS BEING ERASED: PROVING THE HIGH PERCENTAGE OF DEMONOLOGY; AND GROSS DARKNESS; JUST BEFORE... THE NEW CREATION COULD BEGIN AGAIN: THE RETURN OF OUR LORD; from primordial times; to appear as an infant. Rev 22:1, Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.* All this was the setting of the background: to what I really wanted to say. If the mountains are the MAN spirit symbol: then the hills are the Calvary symbols. The book of Zerubbabel; rebukes the high mountains; reduced to ashes; and then the small hill; the cornerstone; or CALVARY'S HILL: it is proclaimed: GRACE, GRACE; - IT IS JESUS CHRIST THE CORNERSTONE.
3)Jesus speaks on this too. Mark 11:23, Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him. Lucifer comes from the side of the primordial creation story: The MAN MOUNTAINS. SO, IN THE PRAYER IN GETSEMANE; THE WORLD BELONGS TO SATAN...
4)JESUS SWEATED BLOOD; Because: he knew this; - AND PRAYED FOR US. He was going to infuse into us; like he infused into Adam; THIS IS WHERE Blessed Fulton Sheen comes in; later explained. Quickly; - Beloved Archbishop Fulton Sheen said: that we are like the Valentine Heart. Think about it; and see; how we are more privileged than Adam. In the last paragraph will continue on this.
5)Jesus in Getsemani: Meanwhile; - there are the range of Calvary hills. Those hills belong to the abode of angels; and BELONGING to the sun rays of God; BUT he has to raise from the dead. Shaking Power example: THE FULL SHAKING POWER OF GOD; LIKENED TO THE SUN; - As the center of our spiritual Solar System. God's explosion of Light is guarded by the bumper of three loves: FAITH, HOPE, AND CHARITY. Love is always; going to cover a multitude of sins; the bumper: between the two highways; Mary and the Son of God.
6)The VM WOULD BE LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN; OF CALVARY WITH; JESUS CHRIST; Revelation 12. CONCLUSION: Anything to do with humanity is really NOT good at all. We have to implode the MAN mountain; by dying out to ourselves; and letting Calvary...
With the Holy Spirit RAYS to; guide the Church; rather than SUN block the church; in the permissiveness of self-destructive will.
7)BY TAKING THE EUCHARIST; WE HAVE LESS CHANCES TO SIN; DAY 191; CIY: Jesus WILLS US: to accept his will; that is; - INFUSION/CONSUMPTION. We become new creatures in Christ; and sort of grow our wings; to become the closest things to angels; the SAINTS; LIVING ON THE CALVARY HILLS; in our journey on earth. WHEN JESUS CAME DOWN AS AN INFANT: IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT; JESUS HAD THE VISION: THE CALVARY MOUNTAIN WAS SEEN ONLY TO HIM; AS A BOY. NOW, IN OUR DEMENTION HE STILL IS; - AND WITHOUT A VISION MY PEOPLE PERISH. PROVERBS 29:18 LIVING IN THIS VISION; WE TAKE COMMUNION. The presence that never changes; is called anemnesis; - came from the Catechism in a Year channel; by Fr. Mike.
8)Bishop Fulton Sheen's Valentine Heart: he said: that on this side of our journey; we never give all our hearts TO EARTHLY THINGS; being that we do not idolize anything on this earth. So, a piece of our Heart remained in Heaven; and that's why; we have a longing to be with Jesus; - because: he has the INFUSION PIECE IN HIS HEART. TWO HEARTS REUNITED AS ONE HEART. WHAT AN INFUSION THAT WILL BE; WHEN MY JESUS FACE; - I'LL SEE.
9)Adam was breathed; infused into his soul, and spirit. His wife was born from his side; Eve. That is the caterpillar section of Life. Now we are entering the metamorphosis of the butterfly. Jesus infused into Mary; and out of the side of Jesus; his Church Bride. This is the difference between Adam the worm; and Jesus the Butterfly.
