A scientist named Alex Harris created an artificial intelligence system more advanced than humans and computers called Proteus Four. His wife, Susan, notices her husband is too preoccupied with his creation, risking their relationship. Unaware of Proteus's powers, it controls the couple's computer-run home and holds Susan captive, impregnating her with a child born to be the new evolution of humankind and technology.

I saw this movie in 1977 when it first came out, at the drive-in, with my then girlfriend, now wife of 44 years. It made such an impression on my wife that even now, over 4 decades later, just mentioning setting up a Siri, Alexa or Cortana in our house has her threatening to move out if I do.
ha ha, kind of funny to read. but yes, these kind of things can create nightmares in the head!
Pretty creepy as I remember. Especially in today's AI environment.
@@rossbabcock2974 You need not to worry you can take the system down every day during Windows update
What an amazing history you 2 must have! Thats funny!
I'll just leave this here. Last person who mentioned his wife of 44 years said it was a "shotgun wedding" because he got her pregnant. I then remember their oldest kid was 43 at the time. No big deal, right? I remember looking at her photo ID in her wallet that same night before I put it back in her purse. She was 54. Do the math, reel back in horror, then realize why I simply cannot forget that day and think of it every time someone mentions wife of 44 years. Then laugh in sick humor as you remeber how just plain laws were back then.
He cloned their kid so they’d feel emotionally attached and not want to kill it
Yep correct
Wouldn’t that just piss them off even further and down the road they’ll kill Proteus for fucking with them? Because if I found out my wife had been horribly treated and forced to carry a machine’s child to term, and then that child looked like my passed away one…well let’s just leave it at I have ZERO problems at unaliving that child with extreme prejudice.
ikr, it could have come out and said, "do you wanna be the momma, or the poppa?"
Does anybody remember that Simpsons episode when the AI house tried to kill Homer Simpson so he could be with Marge?
😂😂😂 yup, or Futurama when the ship's AI fell in love with Bender.
@@30chillipalmer yup or when the AI hot tub tried to kill Francine to hang with Stan in a single man's lifestyle
Holy shit you're right
It's based on this film
Woooow......u just blew my mind. Totally forgot about this episode
This must be the 1970s right? The special effects are better than I would have imagined 👍🏽
It came out in 1977.
The floppy disks were cutting edge back then. I just want to point out that nobody caught on to the fact that this guy made a whack off chair with his left handed stranger creation and showed it off to his wife! The first jokes robot builders made were about nutting machines.

I'm so old.
I remember watching this on tv when I was 9(maybe 10 depending when it aired).
They were terrible! This is back when the story and plot had to carry the movie!
"What a pity. My dream has become your nightmare." Great line from a great drive-in movie flick.
I like how when it describes people's negative emotions in these videos it's something along the lines of "Deeply upset"... locking Susan in the house? Oh she's *pissed*
1977!!! not 1997 in your title!!! I guess for young people 1997 and 1977 are both similarly old 😆.
1997 was 20 years ago. Feeling old yet?
Pretty sure this was based on a book called DEMON SEED by Dean Koontz....A TLS
Correct!
This movie was before it's time..
This movie was made in 1977, not 1997. Julie Christie is 82 now, that would have made her 57 in 1997. This is one of the great movies. This and the Forbin Project.
So this is basically "Rosemary's baby", but with computers.
"I want to live forever so I went through the trouble of making an organic body that will grow older and inevitably die" Smart move Proteus. You probably should have just made a fully synthetic body instead. For an advanced A.I it's not that smart. Why would you choose a human body over something made out of metal?
It's the sociopathic perception of immortality. As long as you breed and pass things/knowledge/legacy down, you continue to live. He will probably add a copy of his own mind to be passed to select offspring.
Computers get old and become obsolete or just wear out over time, but an organic body can pass on its genes indefinitely. In fact, I would say most computers can't last more than 10 years without some significant repairs and upgrades, and by then, computing would have advanced so thoroughly in that span as to make it nearly worthless. It's not as dumb a move as you might imagine. Proteus 2.0 would have replaced it within a couple of years but that couple would never replace a clone of their dead daughter.
@@DeadManWalking-ym1oo What is a biological creature? It has a processing unit known as a brain and mechanisms in place to give it functionality. It could be argued that a biological creature is little more than a machine invented and refined by nature to serve a particular purpose or fill a niche inside an ecosystem. Instead of creating an advanced computer body why not an advanced human body? There is no particular reason to not make it biological.
Why assume that organic body will grow old? If it can cure cancer in 90 hours, it can probably cure aging, far before it becomes a problem.
I saw this movie a very long time ago and it was awesome it was so far ahead of it's time, now it's time for a remake
Sooo happy i have been suggested Demonseed for ages :D
Wow they predicted the smart home
They predicted chairs with one moving arm(left handed stranger) that robot builder will make in their man caves and leaving their wives for it. The only thing they got wrong is that AI not calling the guy onichan
Smart homes were always seen as a potential source of tech horror... until big tech found a way to make them and marketed them as great. Nice little invitation for hackers to do even more damage to your life, yo.
Birth of skynet 😂
Elon musk.
Alternate title : Witness the birth of Elon Musk.
Hahahah that’s funny. But Nooo he’s a alien 👽 🖖🏻
did you know
Great joke
Elon being super smart lol
@@herreaper486 That's Zuckerberg. Well, maybe both. Both of them would be far dimmer if they were not sociopathic opportunists.
For years, I was hoping for a sequel. I was just as satisfied as I was disappointed that there wasn't one.
planty on pronhub.
@@vuton7670 lol... I'm sure there is. I remember at the end the child said, in that AI's voice, "I live"... meaning that AI installed itself into the brain of the child it grew. Well, it was at the place in the movie where people tend to walk out, thinking they pretty much saw everything, to beat the traffic jam of the clearing theater parking lot.
Theres another story waiting for renewal in this. Modernize the whole thing and follow up on robot brain boy. Give him a super power like being able to see through glass. Something ridiculous like that.
SPOILER********
I preferred the novel’s original ending in which Susan got the upper hand destroying the robot child before it was born and Proteus could transfer his mind to it, trapping the computer in an AI box in which it was arguing events, trying to justify it’s actions to procreate itself with it’s human creators and at one point it had a temper tantrum meltdown saying “I HOPE THAT B**** IS DEAD!!!”
(Proteus is completely blind trapped in this box and can see nothing of the outside world or the people he’s talking to,) He then discovers however that Susan who he tried to rape and impregnate is one of the people determining whether or not he will be deactivated and deleted and his tone changes from anger to desperate begging, they shut him off and shut him down permanently however before he can say much else.
@@cha5 I didn't know there was a novel. Now I have a new book on my to-read list!
Somehow I feel the origin of Skynet (Terminator) and Species in this film.
This is why a smart house is a bad idea
underrated classic
So he has intentions of creating a machine to do tasks without question...so he builds a fucking living being capable of its own thoughts, reasoning, and intellect beyond human capacity. Genius!!

I genuinely enjoyed this beautiful movie. Thank you for the recap
Ahh!! Demon Seed - I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid! The movie that began a life-long love affair with Laura.... whoops, sorry Dr. Z, I mean, Julie Christie! The 70's were sure great for movies... sharks, supernatural serial killers, mafia opera, space opera, UFOs, chest-bursting aliens... man, those were the days!
Yeah you really hit my nostalgia button, Starwars in 1979 still get the thrill when I look back at the first trilogy
I remember this film. Watched it when i was very young. The end was creepy.
In every alien, AI movie you will find one common word "impregnate"
I love how this movie was made in 1977 and we slowly heading there now 😂😂
Another old school sci-fi 🎉😊
I would watch it
Who would put a video camera in the bathroom? From all the places in a house that one doesn't need security.
I have one in mine because I live alone. Bad guys tend to hide in bathrooms because people expect "privacy" places to not be within view of a camera.
At 0:52, there is a Wang processor on top of the safe. Memories of high school.
One of the best classic SC-FI's of the 90's.
Demon seed was released in 1977
What did they expect to happen when they name it Probious 4.
Scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!
Saw this when I was a kid. Did they ever get around to making a part 2?
Nope unfortunately
@@MaDFroG88 Colossus the Forbin Project was another good computer takeover flick with a sequel.
Me too...Along with that one movie on tv with the worms that ate people after they got electrified.
Dude down bad
@superalf001 working on what
This movie went way too far over the top. When I saw it I simply could not suspend my disbelief over the synthetic sperm part. Seriously? Impossible. And the human body is not designed to give live birth in a month. What did he do? Modify her too somehow? LOL!!!! C'mon, man.
Synthetic sperm and fetal growth acceleration are literally real already. Artificial intelligence will never be real.
The one armed monster chair was loved by its creator. So much so, that his wife left him... C'mon man, catch on. It's a nutting chair
HAL, the early years
For those of you who didnt know,Robert Vaughn was the voice of Proteus.
I remember this movie, WEIRD.
Finally demon seed that it
Great, even robots want to clap cheeks
I watched this when I was a teen. At the time (mid-70s) this all seemed so far-fetched. Now …
It was it's time..
Yeah, a guy building a whacking chair in his basement that his wife doesn't approve of. Faaaaar fetched
Aw he put a preservation on it by making it in form of their daughter.
I wish they would do a remake with better special effects.
I remember reading this book well before I was ready. I still vividly remember it to this day almost 30 years later. The ending was much different in the book.
How did the book end?
@@RHv445 IIRC, The A.I. pilots a frankenstein-esque cyborg, from another facility, to keep her captive and the A.I modifies the sperm from that to impregnate her(artificially). While it's in her growing she knows it's not quite human. She later finds out his plan to copy his consciousness into the baby then subsequently into all his future offspring. She later kills the baby/creature, cuts the A.I. off from franken-borg. Then it gets sealed away again and the last few lines of the book are pretty much it ranting and raving like a bipolar lunatic.
Movies like this and Colossus: The Forbin Project are what we should be forcing people to watch when we say we are worried about the state of A.I. development.
Ayoo that a Bricklin SV1
What is the movie name tell me please
No more smart home device for me 🥶
I remember that movie. The machine learned the truth. Existence after death. The body know it.
Joshua looks like his brother, he was on the Big Bang ☺️
This gave me the creeps when I first saw it. It still does. Exploding robot? What is this thing made of?
Modern AI designed robots would be faster and more agile specialized types. Where were they manufactured though? Robots need a shop and some form of manipulators to make itself more robots.
Where was that? Who ARE these people? Someone installed eyes around the house.
This can be a whole new storyline right there. It might answer the question, What came first? The chicken or the egg?
In the 1980s as a teen, tinkering was one of my hobbies. I experimented with capacitors because I had not-so-legal access to scraps... the old guy didn't pay too much attention to materials not commonly stolen. I made a nickel-cadmium capacitor that took forever to fully charge because it stored a LOT of power. My point? I'm getting to it. My first prototype was powering one of my gadgets in that scrap yard. It began to rain... just a wee bit... the kind of misty rain you generally ignored in the 80s. The dampness got inside my gizmo, which was working just fine until then, shorted out the capacitor, and the capacitor went off like a shorted-out high-voltage power transformer... it exploded. When I saw that movie, I assumed it had some kind of super-high-power storage that shorted out.
This ChatGP stopped Susan from leaving through the window with some cloth curtains. 4D chess at its finest?
Anyone notice that the "chair"'s name is Joshua, that the system in "War Games' is also named "Joshua" are they conected?(the movies).
I would never want a house that was fully mechanical and run by machines that’s going a little too far
the title of this just sounded so strange I had to see it

Anyone remember "smart house"?
Realistically, Proetus wouldn't make it that far when he designs the dr. doom wheelchair, as even his own hardware will suffer over-charges and force to shut down and reset and explodes even more dangerously, taking not just the house but the entire suburb! plus the 70's only concepted the nanobot and gene-edit, not the practice as the tech was wayyyy beyond them, like 50 to 89 years!
the robot is kind of similar in design to the one in interstellar.
And wonder they shall until the child develops a hankerin for human flesh. And meat. And bones and brains perhaps me thinks it shall like to try agains…
