i always go back to the good ol’ Zeiss 55 when i do portraits
You have awesome videos on photography, keep up the good work!
Currently, using the 85GM and 35GM. Great clip, and breakdown of your favorites!
135 mm GM is my favorite for portrait. I often shoot is at f2.8 and the out of focus area could hardly be better. Otherwise 24 mm GM for low light and walkaroud and 24-70 mm GM for general use.
I agree with all the lenses you showed are fantastic..my 85 1,8 is always on my camera,, I just move my feet to change the focal lengths. Good video
Great video! I am using on my A7III and on the A7RIII native lenses, too.
My favorites for portraits are:
- 24mm 1.4 GM (a dream on R3)
- 85mm 1.8 G
- 135mm 1.8 GM (what a beast!!!)
- 55mm 1.8 Zeiss
I also have the 70-200 2.8 GM, but I didn’t try to use it in my little studio. I‘m using this lens (called Panzer- in English tank) for animals like horses and dogs. It’s often very dusty and the animals are often very hasty- so I’m happy about the value of the „GM-Tank“ :)
Regards from Black Forest Germany ✌🏼
The 85mm 1.8 is not a G lens.
Great video, I have them all but the 135mm and the 50mm. I will be adding them soon
Add also a description for 90mm G OSS which can replace for sure the 50mm 1.8, having also a macro capabilities so can be a very detail catcher ! Any way thanks for inspiring us !
I have the Sigma 85mm DG DN, which I bought to replace my old Sony 85mm f1.8. I almost decided to get the 135mm GM, but thought it’d be too tight in certain scenarios for the type of portraits I take. But you’re almost, ALMOST, making me regret getting it. 😂 the Sigma impresses me though, so I’m still pretty happy with it. I also recently bought the Sony 35mm f1.8 for environmental portraits.
Awesome video Miguel. Would love it if you made one on photography lighting if you haven’t already I’m new to your channel and love the style of your videos very informative keep up the good work on your videos.
Eladio.
My goto portrait setup is 35mm 1,4 Zeiss, Zeiss 55mm1.8, Sony 90mm 2.8 and Epic Sigma 135 1.8 which is truly epic!
Both the 90mm and 135 are the best
Awesome vid. My faves are 24mm 1.4 55mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8
I used the 85 f/1.8 for 100% of my headshot work and when I need a slightly wider lens, the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. If I need to go pretty wide I use the 24-70 f2.8 GM but that 24mm in the video is quite tempting
Right off the bat you have my favourite! The 135mm. It's on my bucket list ..... siiiiiigghhhhhh
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
good list, for me, 135GM # 1, Sigma 50 1.4 # 2, Sigma 85 1.4 # 3, Sony 70-200 2.8 GM # 4 and Sony 35 1.4 GM #5. Tend to use mostly the 50/35 combo, 135 and 70-200 weight is the one issue I don't shoot with them more often. The 24 1.4 is a great lens, but , for portraits, distortion can be a problem and need to be extra careful
I agree 100% with all your lenses except for the 85 f1.8. I also have the 85mm GM and I think it’s one of the top lenses.
55mm 1.8 and 24-70mm GM are two of my most used lenses for general portrait and dance portraits.
Thx for the video. I use most often the Sony 24-105 mm f4 G lens because it is pretty much 1/2 the price of the 24-70 mm F2.8 G Master, plus a bit longer telephoto. If I need a wider aperture other than f4, I use the Sony 90mm f2.8 G Macro (for extra sharpness), the 85mm f1.8 and the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f2.8. A video on how you use the focus hold button for portrait shooting would be great.
That list is spot on. I’m using the 85 1.8, the 55 1.8, the 70-200 f4 and the 135 batis 2.8 For some reason I always go back to the 135. Amazing results at that focal length.
135gm for me every time magical lens
I have the Batis 135 as well and it's a joy to use. Results are amazing.
Thank you! You confirmed my own personal pick for the perfect portrait lens kit for Sony for both photo and video.💕 Thinking of switching to Sony from Canon for lighter and cheaper lenses with as good quality! 😊
My best portrait lenses are:
1. Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM
2. Sigma 85mm f/1.4 A (I can't find any reason to choose the Sony GM)
3. Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM
4. Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 (or the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II if you can afford it)
...and when available, the 85mm f/1.2 and 100mm f/1.4 GM ;).
My favorite is the Sony 55mm f1.8 and my 85mm f1.4 as a backup. You’re right, the weight makes a big difference when shooting with the 85mm GM. Great list
I was wondering indeed between 85mm f1.8 and 50mm 1.2.. both looks great on paper. The 1.2 I would use only in low light / astro conditions, and it obviously cost a lot more than the 85mm f1.8. However following a review on lenstip, it also seems to perform a lot better. Aside from the price consideration, would you confirm that ?
when i was shooting the A900 i managed to get a 135 f1.8 zeiss lens and it back then was a dream. and before sony were being taken seriously so lenses were being shifted in shops cheaper than anything else used. so i picked it up for £600 i sold the lens 4 years later for £975 when i moved to emount i went through a few lens from the zeiss batis 85mm to the samyang manual 135 lens which were both amazing but then bought the sigma 135mm f1.8 and then compared it to the 135gmaster and that was it i was sold. and have never looked back sinse i totally love the 135gm and in my latest video i was shooting birds of prey with it and its a win win win
1. 135mm GM= phenomenal lens WOW!
2. sigma 105 f1.4= sharp beautiful bokeh
3. 90mm f2.8 macro= so sharp it can be a bad thing but I love it
4. Samyang 85 f1.4= sent my 85 GM back cuz it is barely better in sharpness.
5. Tamron 70-180= use it mainly at 180mm to compress the distracting background. Great lens
I am not a big fan of anything under 85mm cuz it just looks like a normal snapshot with some bokeh. But hey that’s just me.
Absolutely, hands down, you personality shines through in your video. This is the first video I've seen of yours, and I'm quite impressed.
Thank you for giving a stellar review.
Cheers
Nice video. Thx!
Thanks for watching! 📸
I own the 24mm GM "my fashion style lens" 35mm 1.8 "Story Telling lens" waiting for the GM version to ship... when ever that happens *shrug*, 85mm GM "Fashion/Beauty lens" 70-200 GM "Run and Go Portrait Lens" and 135mm GM "The Make Anyone Look Good Lens" which is my absolute favorite out of the bunch... it's a BEAST... and one that i HARDLY USE!! I've only used it a few times like in a studio for some beauty shots and some outside work... it deserves more recognition lol.
Having owned the 135, its an amazing lens. Now I am into sony again I might purchase it once more. Will probably get a sigma 85 first. Hope that Sony will bring a 85 prime like the canon rf 85 1.2, which I consider the best portrait lens ever.
I only have the FE 85 f/1.8 for budget reasons. Your top picks are great as is your taste for anime. :D
Thanks for this video! Makes me want to get the 135mm, however I don't do much portrait photography, and I have the 70-200GM. I do love the 24mm 1.4, especially on how close you can get to the subject and still have focus. It provides a unique perspective.
,the 25mm1.4 how close can you get
Prefer a classic lineup for portraiture - 35/1.4 Z (FE), 50/1.4 Z (FE), 85/1.4 ZA (SAL).
The 24mm focal length looks perfect for kids portrait (in my opinion) but I don't use it often. The 135 1.8 is a great for full body shot, but yea, also don't use it so much
Not beeing a full time pro (weekend only) I can carry saurons eye, Sigma 105/1,4 art for a few hours and yes I curse but I love it. AF speed not the best.
When it‘s getting sporty of course the 135/1,8 GM. Both ridiculous sharp but 135GM at low light on a9=beastmode.
50/1.2 GM to come soon, becouse I love fast AF lenses
I have the sal70200mm 2.8 it works for quite a few things I almost never take it off my A7IV until I got a sigma 28-70 a friend gave me light weight and pretty sharp u use the sony A2E mount adapter version 5
Dope shirt and great video. I've been trying to convince myself I didn't need a 135 prime, so thanks. LOL
Thank you! And I know the feeling. I'm still doing that with the 12-24GM 😂
100 STF, 50 Plannar, 85 1.8, 35 Distagon, 24-70GM in that order for me 👍
The Shonen Jump T-Shirt you're wearing is sick. Where did you get it from?
Thank you Miguel for this useful video. Please tell me regardless to weight, for best IQ in/out, 70-200 G or GM?
GM for sure. I had the G and wanted to love it due to the lighter weight, but the IQ wasnt what I had hoped for.
@@MiguelQuilesJr I thought because of new technology "Linear Motor" on new G and GM lenses, it's better to sell my 24-70GM and 70-200GM and buy some new ones instead for better IQ and higher performance! please advise.
I sold my 80mm f1,8 but to fill that whole I replaced it with the 90mm OSS, I think it's a really great option.
The 90G is in my top 10. It would have made my top 5 but it's so sharp I tend to only use it when I'm photographing someone with great skin.
90mm macro f2.8! 😍 sooooo sharp and versatile
It's definitely in my top 10! Love my 90G Macro 📸
Well, I am a longtime Nikon shooter.... Sold it ALL in the fall of 2019 and jumped on the A7R4, yeah, I finally drank the high mp kool-aid. I had like 10 or 11 Nikon lenses, including the 200mm f/4 Macro, the 135 DC, and at one point the zoom trinity, which I sold to buy the 24 f/1.4 G and the 85 f/1.4 G and my 105 macro was so old it had a Made in Japan label. In late 2019 however, I had a personal reckoning. What kind of photographer am I? Why do I need all this? This is my kit now: A7R4, 135 f/1.8 GM, 85 f/1.4 GM and yes, you guessed it, 24 f/1.4 GM. Also the Profoto A1X and the remote and shotgun microphone. Not really tempted by anything else. If I had the resources I'd get that 50 f/1.2 and the 90mm Sony macro. Have had my eye on that macro since 2019.
The top 3 is amazing, 135mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.2 I would probably just add the 35mm f/1.4
The 35GM is really good too! I debated including it over the 24GM but since it's so new I have less experience using it. In time I believe it'll crack the top 5 for sure. 👍
Thoughts on the Sigma 24-70mm for equine photography?
I had the 2.8 version and wasn't crazy about it. There was a lot of purple fringing in the highlights that messed up my shots for a shoot I did. I'd rather try to find a used Sony 24-70 instead.
My Top Lens for portrait and more
1. Sony 70 - 200 F2.8 GM
2. Sony 85 F1.4 GM
3. Sony 50 F1.4 Zeiss
4. Sony 24 F1.4 GM
5. Sony 16 - 35 F2.8 GM
I Solded the 85 and 50 Zeiss for Sony 50 F1.2 GM (future buy), and wait the 85 F1.2 GM
I only use prime Lenses, I think a 50mm are too short a focal Lens for portrait in "full frame" 24x36mm sensor Cameras ! But I do use the slightly longer focal length that the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 have for APSC sensor mode, I use the 55mm and the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM for moving persons with eye-dection mode, for persons that are static I use the excellent Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical which have outstanding optical image quality and it is built like a tank, the 65mm are a real "work horse", I like to nail a shot with manual focus, autofocus are not always 100% where I want it to be. I never use flash, only natural light.
if I own a 35mm g master what would your next lens be for portraits? 50mm g master 1.2 or the new sigma art 85 1.4?
I'd go with the 135GM, or the new 70-200GM. That way you have all of your bases covered. 📸
For beginner, I go with 85-f1.8 then advance, I ll go with 50-f1.2
Tanks for your video. I am wondering why you’re not talking of the 35 mm gm ? Is it the focal that you don’t use or something else ?
Thank you! At the time I made this video the 35mm hadn't been out long enough to get a good feel for it. Today I'd definitely have it in my top 5 lenses and use it all the time. To me, it's identical in quality to the 24GM which is an awesome lens itself.
@@MiguelQuilesJr Thanks for your answer, I understand your choice 😉
He should have mentioned the DG DN f/1.2 35mm
You've recommended some excellent lenses, but most of them cost too much for everyday folks. For this reason, my "go-to" lenses are the 70-200 2.8 Tamron coupled with 24-70 2.8 Sigma. These two lenses cost a grand total of $2100 yet cover all of the focal lengths covered in your video. And considering I shoot at least at 2.8 most of the time, I really don't have the need for 1.4. For anyone "on a budget", I can't recommend these two lenses highly enough.
I agree with you on the 24-70 Sigma art. I do own 1.4 lenses. But this lens is a do it all beast! That includes portraits.
What do you think about the new Tamron 35-150 to replace the 70-200 ?
Too heavy, too expensive, primes are the best way
Hi,
What do you think obout Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS im on the budget 😅?
Hi! For the money, it's a nice option. I personally like the 50mm f/2.5 a bit better even though it's not as "fast", but it does cost more.
Look at latest Samyang's, also 45mm.
(Watch also Dustin Abbott who is not biased to just one brand)
I'm kind of surprised the 100/2.8 STF isn't on the list. One of your photo shares with that lens is how I discovered your work.
I love my 100GM, but the 135GM is just so much better. It's still in my top 10 though.
I just bought a Sony A7R IV and I want to ask, which is a good starting lens to buy for portrait photography, but wont cost a lot as I just spent a lot on the camera?
Congrats on the new camera! For me, I'd go with the Sony 85mm f/1.8. You can get one used for under $500 and it's a beast for portrait photography.
What happened to Excalibur? I still love the Sony 90mm f2.8 macro... okay and the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. Solid performers.
I love Excalibur! It's in my top 10. 55 1.8 is definitely a great performer.
Is 135 GM good for indoor family photos?
Yes, I use the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM for indoor family photos, now you can also get the cheaper but excellent Samyang AF 135mm 1.8
What do you think of the 35mm GM?
It's fantastic! Since the 24GM has been out longer I've had more experience with it. In time I imagine the 35GM will make my top 5.
Oh my gosh - @8:10!
He's the future star! ❤️
1. 70-200mm f2.8; 2. Sony 50mm f1.4 planar; Sony 16-35mm f2.8; Sony batis 135mm f2.8; Sigma 105mm f1.4
What happened to your 90mm Macro you always used?
I still use it. It's in my top 10, but it's really a niche lens for me. Like I mentioned in my video for the 90G, it's really for those rare times when I have a subject with amazing skin and I want to capture the detail. These other lenses are more general purpose for me which is why they made my top 5 😎👍
Dude getting teary-eyed at talking about indoor portrait use of the 135 GM. Ha! Wait until he discovers the Sigma 105 1.4!
Tried it way back. I might have been the first to post a hands on video on CZcams with the Sigma 105 1.4. It's not on the same level as this lens, not even close!
@@MiguelQuilesJr Cool. Thanks for the reply. What did you think of the new Sigma 85 DN DG? Or have you tried that one yet?
Haven't tried that one yet but it's on my list to test out! 😁👍
No !
Don't even shoot sony (nikon z6ii is my camera) but always check out what Miguel puts up, no bullsh*t just solid info
My man! Thank you for the support 😁✌️📸
that 50mm 1.2 looks yummy
It is soooooo good. I'm not even a 50mm guy and I'm now officially the president of the fan club 😅
I hope Sony will make a 85mm 1.2 (and a 135mm 1.4 or 1.2 😉)
What about the new 35 mm f1.4 GM?
I love it! I have used the 24GM more over the years, but I imagine the 35GM will eventually make my top 5.
please is the 16mm okay...
I thought I'd see the 90mm on your list.
since I have a crop sensor I'd like get the sigma 16mm + 56mm f1.4s. and most likely the Sony 85mm f1.8
although sometimes I feel like I need a full frame for extra look. anyway that's it great list right there
Which lenses are in your top 5? Leave them below! Also, don't forget to sign up for PPA using my link and get $25 off your membership! www.ppa.com/join/miguel-quiles
Got to be the 24-70 GM, 70-200 GM, 35mm 1.4, 105mm 1.8, and 135mm 1.8!
Great choices!
Sigma 85 1.4, Sony 35 GM, Sony 55 1.8,
Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical, Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony 135mm 1.8 and Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, these five Lenses are my most used Lenses. If Voigtländer comes with 14, 24 and 135mm APO Lenses, then I do not need the Sony GM Lenses any more !!! Just outside top five are the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8
What an Sony advert
😁😁😁
Did you buy one? 😁😁😁
@@MiguelQuilesJr believe it or not, im still using an A6000 and A99II and A99 DSLRs...
Loved using the A99II back in the day. Fantastic camera!
@@MiguelQuilesJr im 99% photo-journalist so i find it pretty awesome... I tried A7s and A7II and while awesome for video, i depend on top screen... I would love to try an A9 or A1.... They are beasts
@@omniart5714 The top screen is something I wish they would integrate into the Alpha series at some point. It would be super useful not only for making that info quick to see, but also to save some battery life. Those older Alpha cameras were good, but these new bodies (specifically the A7IV) are significantly better, especially for photojournalism.
I thought you would list 100stf as your number one portrait Len s
No mention of the Sony 90 Macro 2.8? hmmmm
It's definitely in my top 10. The top 5 here were just better all around for me. 90 macro is great but niche.
@@MiguelQuilesJr Sharper than the 85 1.8 I guess (?) Anyway I’m forever grateful I bought the 90mm thanks to you and your work and I couldn’t be more happy for portraits and video.
Its the sharpest of all lenses I've ever used! That's not what you want all the time though for portraiture. I use it when I am working with someone who has exceptional skin. It's clutch for those situations! 📸
Tamron 35-150 f2-f2.8
50 1.4 ZA , Sony 135 1.8 GM
I had a hard time with the 50 1.4. My 55 1.8 was so much sharper that I rarely ended up using it.
Which is sharper SONY GM 24mm 1.4 or Sony GM 35mm 1.4? why one and not the other? Thanks
They are about the same in terms of sharpness. I chose the 24GM mainly because I've had more experience with it. The 35gm will likely enter my top 5 as I use it more. 👍
@@MiguelQuilesJr Which of the two would you recommend, for landscape and portrait? by the way the 35 is nowhere for sale in the USA ... I am struck by the 24 I would like to see raw photos to determine
Probably the 24. You can always shoot in APSC mode and get a 36mm equivalent with it.
@@albertogvphoto I use the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, the best 24mm you can get ! For 35mm Lens Go for the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical it is bulit like a tank and have outstanding image quality, it is much more compact and lighter than the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM.
All great lenses. Stay away from the Voigtländer 65/2 because you won't want to use any of these other lenses. Since I got the Voigtländer my GMs barely see any action.
:-)
Agree, I also have the excellent Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical Lens, it have outstanding image quality and it is a joy to use, also bulit like a tank, I love that Lens ! I can also highly recommend the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical !
i am not SURPRISED bcs i used 85mm 1,8 for many years....best LENS....but u need to be fast with your body..
Miquel Keyless
Nailed it!
Bro, give us other non Sony lenses, maybe even vintage
That's the plan! I'm making a separate dedicated video on the topic 👍
The newest sigma 85 1.4 destroys both 85s from Sony. It’s not even close.
Literally none of the native lenses have even an ounce of zest or character, but the great thing about Sony cameras is that you can adapt any spicy and juicy lens your heart desires :D
For me a lot of the character comes down to lighting and styling. The older lenses definitely have some unique features that I like using on occasion though 📸
@@MiguelQuilesJr that's my whole shtick! :D I don't use artificial light or too much styling, so the importance of the lens' intrinsic character is much higher on my priority list than AF, resolution or ergonomics. I also like to be upclose and personal with models, so 50mm is just about where I sit all the time. 85mm is already too long, 135mm feels like shooting from the other end of a football pitch.
@@KNURKonesur why don't you just be honest and instead of "intrinsic character" use the word "flaws"?
@@mavfan1 exactly what I was thinking.
Sigma has the best portrait lens. 105 1.4 🥵
Tried it, wasn't a fan. Using my same portrait settings I was getting a 70% hit rate as far as getting the eyes sharp. I immediately returned it. Made a video about it I think.
No !
How can You judge consistency if You don't use them ???!!! Thanks for everything - but that is quite a dumb, corrupt statement.
Sigma's 85mm f1.4 is WAY better then the old GM. The DG DN 35mm f/1.2 is phenomenal (for environmental and other portraits). Their 105mm f1.4 also exeeds "gets the stuff donne" bullshit.
The GM 50 f1.2 is one of my favorite, far exceeds the bond I could never really achieve with the previous best 50 in my mind; their Planar. I hate these soul corrupting propaganda influencer videos.
(I probably prefere the "old gm24 to the new DN f1.4 Sigma. Thats to say : it's not a question of brand. Voighlander MF apo 65mm could also be mentioned for portraits ..oh so I just did)
Oh and since I'm so infuriated : The DN 14-24 is over the top stellar, far better than the gm 16-35 was to me. Samyang's 45mm has beautifull rendering. True I would pick the gm 135 over the samyang - only because of the AF that nails it (currently) better - but I dont need 135.
