- Ahead of its full patch roll-out on 14th December we had a chance to visit CD Projekt Red's offices to try the new PS5 and Xbox Series X release of The Witcher 3. Today, its new ray tracing modes are tested, and the 60FPS mode is put through its paces too - with plenty of details on the upcoming PC upgrade included. Tom explores the opening White Orchard segment of the game - with plenty more to show when it releases in full.

Same time last year, I replayed W3 and it was even better than the first time. To everybody who waited for this version to begin a second play (or a third play!), don't rush through the game. Take your time so you can appreciate every bit of the stories, the amazing sceneries, the music... It's art.

I completed the main game about a year ago and never got around to the DLC. Now I will 😏
Yes, no game should be rushed.
@@KyleSetFire The DLC is arguably better than the main game.
Or a sixth time
Honestly, seeing all this footage from the original compared to the update just makes me remember how much of a masterpiece the original is. Especially for a 7 year old game the original still looked gorgeous.
Already have this moved to my internal storage. The fact that I'm this excited to play a 7 year old game that I've completed multiple times is a testament to how good this game is.
so you have other games in a external storage drive?
@@rogoznicafc9672 I have a 5tb drive for Xbox. When my internal SSD gets full I move games to it. The SSD cards are still too expensive.

@@jackabm69 the Xbox version will upgrade the old gen version to series X. The PS5 should download as a separate version as other cross gen games do. Not sure about PC.
That's still a very young age for a game. The best games of all time are all more than double that age.
Cross save is what has me really excited. Going between Steam Deck and Series X on the fly is very enticing.
The fact that you guys dropped this early is great - This'll be my very first playthrough

Enjoy my friend. Its was the best WRPG last gen.
Experiencing this for the first time? I envy you...
Nice and sensible selection of upgrades. I really like that they went for RTGI and RTAO. In my opinion, raytraced global illumination is the most important technology out of all RT effects. It can change scenes to great degree and make them appear more life like.
RT reflections are a good pick only for games that really benefit from them. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of such examples, but it is missing RT reflections on consoles - sensibly, given how many reflective surfaces there are in game world (especially after rainfall) it would be too taxing. In reality, I think we won't see any significant RT reflections usage through this gen - they will be a nice addition for (powerful enough) PC owners to enrich the presentation, but the "core" art style and visuals will still be made taking older, less accurate reflections effects. They may be thrown in sometimes when there will be GPU grunt to spare in quality modes, but I think no one would mind lack of them in favour of decent level of SSR.
Same story for RT shadows. In action oriented titles they are not that transformative. By all means, developers should go ahead and use them for games that justify it. Thief reboot, but decent this time, anyone? Or RT upgrade for Alien: Isolation? Chronicles of Riddick? Maybe even a proper RT mod for Doom 3? But for the rest - meh, it is thus far a waste of processing power.
Raytraced ambient occlusion on top of regular rasterisation shading techniques is more meaningful addition an I am glad we see it here. Especially given that AO quality was very poor in last gen versions of Witcher 3.
Completely agree. Lighting is the big difference. Reflections you can't tell in natural gameplay. Screen space reflections are good enough most of the time and RT reflections that are higher res and worth it are stupidly expensive. Shadows are a complete waste. They often look worse than the shadows in game as seen in the new Spiderman game or completely bug out. Shadows and reflections were probably only done because the game makers couldn't afford the lighting hit or optimize it well enough and Nvidia sponsored the game.
@@hackintosh3899 Can't say I agree with the stuff regarding RT shadows and reflections entirely. The issue is lack of processing power per visual gain, and there I can agree that compared to RTGI, it tends to not be worth taking on, but if games ought to be made more realistic, these things must come into play at some point.
Geez when last have I played Thief???
@@hackintosh3899 in cyberpunk there is a huge difference in water reflections

Amazing job on this. Already bought it again for the Series X in preparation. ray Tracing is very pretty, but unless I freeze frame and really study, I don't think I would appreciate it as much as a smoother 60FPS experience.

Well, 30fps is not worth it.
Yeah, it's hard to really get the full scope in just this very short comparison.
I'm sure later areas like Skellige may look drastically different with RTGI and RTAO. The new effects will definitely add some really nice variety and depth especially with the new weather states and such.

This seems like the perfect game for an automatic switcher between RT and Performance mode, when going in and out of cutscenes. Would love to see something like that, since performance is not needed in cutscenes, and they ray-tracing looks amazing there, so it would switch to RT for cutscenes and then back to 60FPS for gameplay. Would something like this be possible to do?
Been saying this for a lot of games
Not even a switcher, I would love for games to just automatically (or via a settings option) to run cutscenes at the max resolution/graphical fidelity the game offers. Gameplay at 60 is obviously great but when these SP games offer movie-like immersion and writing, I would love to watch the passive moments like a movie.

Yeah and I will finally be playing Gwent because on my first playthrough I basically did not touch it at all. Pity that they did not update Gwent with the superior stand alone version.
I'd love for it to get an unlocked framerate option as well, if you have VRR.
I have my suspicions we'll see further updating after this because they're going to likely find some bugs so they're probably going to add some features as well. Cdpr is nothing if not diligent about adding visual options to their games. Cyberpunk is one of the few examples I can think of that uses dlss and FSR on PC. And FSR is also getting implemented on consoles. They take the time to make sure there's many visual options so I suspect you may get what you want though I wouldn't hold my breath either.

What a game, what an experience.
It's been almost 8 years since the release and this is still the best game I've ever played. I mean, the way I felt after finishing it for the first time. Few games came close to this, especially RDR2 but The Witcher 3 is gonna be in my heart for a long, long time.
Remember, if these new gen consoles had nvidia GPUs in them instead of AMD ones, we'd easily have had raytracing with 60fps!
The same here. After I completed main game I couldnt play any other game for a year. Its just left a sad feeling that the game or story was over. One the best game ever for me. Other story games are a joke for me. CD project set the bar so high that will be difficult to do better game.
If you haven’t played it yet, go ahead and get Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It is also amazing and the story is pretty phenomenal. The combat takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you get it and master it… You will love how it draws you even more into the game. I just started playing it about a few weeks ago and I’m sorry I didn’t play it when it came out. Other than the fact that I think I paid $10 for it and all of the DLC. It is currently on sale in the store, I believe for 80% off so it’s definitely worth a look. It and the DLC is pretty long. And if you love RPG‘s, you’re going to love it.

Witcher 2 is also my favorite. I prefer the setting and characters in the second game. Though with Witcher 3 combat the game would be even better.

I'm glad we are getting this as a free upgrade, but I would hope developers would also look into the possibility of having a mode operating with lower resolutions (1080p-1440p) w/ 60 fps and the benefits of RT GI, RT SSAO and SSR. I know lowering resolutions won't necessarily give it enough headroom for this to be possible without further optimizations, but It's something that I think a lot of players would appreciate, especially as advancements with these reconstruction techniques like FSR allow for a higher final image quality even while rendering in a lower internal resolution.
Anyway, great job covering this upgrade early!
just set your consoles resolution to that lol
@@Stefantius think he means having that resolution as a target to get more fps. Basically combining performance and Ray tracing modes. I don't know if that's possible but would've been good if the performance mode had some of the Ray tracing mode features.
It's probably the CPU. RT hammers both CPU and GPU. Second Gen Ryzen was limiting RT framerates in Spiderman and the consoles both use second gen Ryzen.

If the game on consoles only has two options in 4K with Raytracing ON or OFF and locked framerates to 60 and 30 fps, the decrease of the console resolution would bring absolutely nothing performance wise...
He is talking about a third mode which I would also prefer.
1440p -> Raytracing -> 60 fps or at least a 40fps mode for TVs with 120Hz

Four ray traced effects on PC is really impressive. I think only Control and Dying Light 2 achieve that and the latter looks absolutely stunning in motion. Glad they added FSR, though DLSS would also be nice.

DLSS isn't possible on console, they have AMD GPU's. FSR is as close they'll get.

CDPR is not Rockstar so the upgrade will be free. I'm still waiting for a simple 60FPS patch for Red Dead Redemption 2...
I believe this free overhaul of the game is mainly aimed at people who never played TW3 before, but watched the show on Netflix, (before it become total dog sht, I reccomend people read the books if they can handle reading). So if their marketting stragety works they'll make money from people actually buying the game. Also people who played and loved TW3 in the past, 2015/2016, on console alot will likely have different accounts from 7 years ago and will rebuy the game to play the shiny new version, I know because I just did the same the other day. I got TW2 and TW3 for less than £10 and have always wanted to play TW2 because story and lore wise it makes TW3 so much better. Playing TW2 on my Series X with auto HDR on my C2 OLED, and it's pretty great so far, had to turn the difficulty to easy though because the combat system is a mess, and I just wanna experience the story. I'll be playing TW3 Remastered on the hardest difficultythough for sure.
I bought this game on sale for Xbox a while back but never got around to playing it. It's sat on my pile of shame ever since. This is a prefect excuse to finally play it. Very excited.
Looks like, at least from what we've been shown so far, that it's the RT Ambient Occlusion that's going to be the biggest visual difference for the RT additions...mostly because of the 'world' it's presented in. In a highly synthetic / glossy Cyberpunk world (The Ascent, Cyberpunk 2077, etc) Ray Traced "Everything" was very much worth it to me (on PC), as it tends to make a bigger difference in GI and reflections. For a medieval world like the Witcher where the vast majority of the world is 'rough' (dirt, wood, more rough-ish metal for armor, etc) ray tracing in GI and reflections definitely don't go nearly as far. Ambient Occlusion does though, so it's great we are getting options.
What’s the difference between GI and AO?
@@harun5358 GI is global illumination. This means most, if not all light. So if GI has ray tracing most light will look more natural and have bounce.
Ao is ambient occlusion. This is the subtle shadows underneath things. It might seem like a small detail but it can add a like of grounded realism to a scene.
Looking forward to the PC comparison with current-gen high-end hardware.

Max settings + Raytracing has very bad performance on 3080. Even the newer 4090s struggle to run it over 60fps.

Glad to see that FSR is being adopted by an increasing number of titles on console. With DLSS off the table, it looks like one of the best alternatives to TAA/TAAU for most games. I assume they're using FSR Quality mode as with Cyberpunk, so the benefits are mostly towards visuals rather than performance.
There is no other alternative to dlss other than FSR. Mxaa, smxaa, taa, etc aren't deep learning solutions.
Well I guess Intel has one but we don't talk about it anymore
And it can't do dlss (which is way better) due to it being amd chips. Not that it's 'off the table' it was never on the table at the meeting. Console games are amd/fsr/rdna2 games.
This looks like FSR 2 done correctly. Couldn't see any flicker or ghosting in this video. Good thing is that AMD is always improving FSR so we may well see further improvements to this game when FSR 3.0 is released.
@@thedude8128 FSR is not deep learning either dude. It's similar to TAA in principle, but in my experience produces a sharper and more stable output.
@@steel5897 yup. Even though I have a 3090, I use FSR on cyberpunk as well because it has less Pixel walk and the sharpening slider doesn't gamma shift like how DLSS does.
@@steel5897 whoops. Thought it was. still sucks compared to fsr. We need nvidia to make console GPU's again. Look at switch. It has held up for so long on 2013 hardware.
Big difference outdoors too. If you turn of ray tracing it can totally change colors of stuff
Looks really good, i would like them to implement an unlocked frame rate mode though for people with a VRR display
???? lol framerate has been unlocked on pc since release in 2015
@@drunkhusband6257 don't u think he's maybe talking about the console version?
a Ray Tracing mode comparison between fan made mod & CDPR's version would be interesting.
RT mode on PS5 seems really choppy to me. Not a consistent 30fps at all. I'm going to wait and see if they patch.
Often sub 30,for sure. The resolution is pretty low, too, although the overall image quality is still pleasing thx to FSR 2.1
@@GolfWhisky absolutely agreed - PS4 version was in much better shape than the current PS5 RT mode, in terms of FPS stability. PS5 RT seems broken to me at the moment, like playing a flip-book…
So ready for this update :)
I'm excited for sure... I got back into PC gaming after a long hiatus, with this game being one of the first to pull me into the ecosystem again. That was at first with a GTX 1050, then finished with a GTX 1060 6GB, and I later returned with my 2070, but it was into a new game + where I'd lost track of everything... and yeah, it was way faster, and I can max it out at 4K now... but I just for whatever reason didn't stick it out. BUT... with a free update that totally overhauls the graphics, with ALL the ray tracing no less... well heckers. Once again it'll push the card, maybe I'll start it with a 2070 and finish it with a 3070 this time... I'm excited... This game pulled me in in ways that I'd HOPED Cyberpunk would be capable of, but it never came close. It ran fine for me on PC at launch and all, no huge complaints there... not like it was on a playstation or anything. I was able to turn up all the pretties at 1440p... now with RTX in it I can do 4K with DLSS, and it's for sure better... I just don't care to finish it, even once... and I'm at the end, lol. But going back into the Witcher 3, a game that honestly still looks GREAT as it was, today even. I'm at least curious. . .
Its good that CDPR learned its lesson, imagine if they released this like a year ago like they said they would. This is definitely worth the wait.
The would have if they didn't release that turd called cyberpunk.
@@mattg768 cyberpunk lowkey good now i enjoyed it
@@ExZ1te highkey
@@ExZ1te It does not matter that it looks good now, because Cyberpunk continues to not be what they said the game will be.
@@mattg768 Yeah, the launch was horrible, but CP def is not turd lol
The Ray Tracing mode looks too "warm" for my tastes. That and with the 30fps cap, Performance mode looks like the way to go. 4k 60fps looks perfect.
I didn't realize how many new 4k textures they were going to include. Makes sense now why this took so long to come out.
To me it looks kinda unbalanced. It's like the contrast is jacked up for colors and the gamma is crushed. It looks off. It's not supposed to be since it's rtgi but it looks to be missing more light bounce. At least I can somewhat remedy this on a decent display.
I hate having to choose between RT and 60 fps in all these damn games. I can't go back to looking at 30 fps after seeing a game at 60, it makes my eyes hurt, but I want my games to look their best
I wish they would give an option to take the camera further back rather than closer.
Can't wait to see how it performs in my new rtx 3060! I know it ain't much but I hope that with some optimization in the settings I can get it to run at 60fps/1080p with some ray tracing options enabled
Should be easy, especially with DLSS
Damn Same Bro👍🏻 I Wish I Will Able To Get Raytracing with 60 fps
You can play 1440 p 60 fps with dlss, I used to play 1080p 60 fps medium w/ high textures on my 1050 ti.
Ps: just make sure to turn off hair works 😜
I’m pretty sure your 3060 will be able to deliver 60 fps at 1080p
Even with Raytracing.
Hope my 3080 will perform nicely in 3440 with RT
Where's the final tech review guys
The quality mode looks warmer. Very nice.
That centre camera is so iconic ill remember it once its gone🥲
Absolutely love it. Now remaster Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight next 🙏🏼
Am I the only one having pretty annoying performance issues in RT mode on ps5… there are so many frame hitches or just flat out bad frame pacing and it’s very very noticeable. I’m shocked I haven’t seen anyone talking about it
Yup, the mode feels terrible.
I feel ya on the RT mode.
Oh, there are many people complaining about the bad performance in RT Mode on consoles, including me. I just hope a patch to improve this doesn't take a year to arrive.😬
Agreed here. Even just panning the camera when inside can trigger jitters and seemingly dropped frames. For me it was massively distracting.
I'm a good 20 hours into this now, starting my first playthrough. I'm on Series X and using the RT 30fps mode and it's definitely a nice looking game, however I've had several crashes, mostly to the dashboard but twice where the game has locked up and a hard reboot required. I'm playing on console for convenience, but tempted to pick it up for PC too, just to see the extra RT effects and a higher framerate (I stand at my PC all day working, so I'm rarely enthusiastic about gaming there too)
Same here on Xbox series x... I'm disappointed to be honest..
I still can't believe this game came out 7 1/2 years ago!
I'm stunned to find they still haven't fixed the horse hair glitch haha. Honestly, all this amazing work and one of _the_ most obvious glitches is left in?! So bizarre.
Hopefully someone from CDPR sees this and flags it. Honestly, it just shows developers probably don't even play their own games - they'd know this was massively prevalent if so. I'm permanently stuck with the Skellige armor 🤣
So excited for this. Arguably my favorite PC game of this gen. I originally beat it on my old laptop with a 960M. Now I have a 3080 and just got a LG B2 OLED tv so I can't wait to crank the settings and experience this again on New Game Plus in its fully glory!
I have the same tv hooked to Xbox series x and it’s amazing. Just wish we had a higher frame rate on the X. I’ve owned this game since launch and never beat it. Beautiful game I just can’t get immersed into it. I think I will give it another try. I’ve also been using GeForce now 3080 subscription on my nvidia shield tv playing cyberpunk in 60fps rtx 4K and it blows Xbox series x away.
@@peterjackson1383 Nice. I'm excited about the tv. It's still in the box as I'm moving to new place this week but will unbox it and set it up just in time for the update. I'd say give it another shot. It's one of those games you have to spend a bit of time to really get into it, but once you do, it's amazing. I had the GeForce 3080 plan before I had actually scored a 3080FE a year ago and it was pretty impressive. I still have the GeForce Now Priority since I'm on the Founders for Life $5 plan and play it a few hours a month via my phone and Razer Kishi.
@@Paulie8K GeForce now 3080 runs amazing on the MacBook Air m1. I recently set it up with a kbm and 32” monitor as well. Technology is crazy now. So many choices of devices to play high quality pc gaming now. As

@@Tonyholmsify is that with a physical 3080 or the GeForce now sub?
Is it possible to keep the original camera distance? I don't care for Geralt filling up so much of the screen; i like seeing the environment
The Witcher 3 still looks gorgeous even in its original form. I've played it through the years on the low-end pc(intel quad core + 8 gigs of DDR3 ram + gtx750ti) with mid graphics, then on the PS4, then on the mid-end pc(intel 12 threads + 16 gigs of DDR3 ram + gtx1060 6 gigs) with the high graphics. Now i will play it on my mid-end RTX card hopefully with full ultra+ or the raytracing.
How'd that work out for you haha? 3060Ti/R5 5600 here, 1440p DLSS Balanced, Ultra + everything, RTGI On, RTAO On, RT Reflections On, RT Shadows Off, Hairworks Off. Getting around 32-45 fps, incredibly stuttery, frametimes are abysmal, crashes to desktop randomly constantly, random freezes/lock ups, simply changing RTGI ON or OFF crashes the game. Performance degrades randomly after anywhere from 30min to an hour from the avg fps noted above to literally 5fps, restarting the game in the same area and boom, back to 32-45 fps avg. The PC release of this next gen update is so terrible there's people with 3080Ti's complaining about not being able to get 60fps lmao, on an update for a 7 year old game! I was thinking DF would of done their analysis on the PC version by now considering how terrible the PC launch is, still waiting though, hope they are working on the analysis though and they take CDPR to town.
Oh and for comparison I get an avg of 70-100fps in Metro Exodus Enhanced with 1440P DLSS Quality, Ultra Quality Settings, Ultra RTGI, RT Reflections, Hairworks ON, Advanced PhysX On, Tessellation On. And that game is much newer and heavier graphically than the Witcher 3, even with it's next gen update. There's videos on my channel for proof of above claims as well! Also pretty sure the RTGI in Metro Enhanced has infinite bounces. Unsure if the Witcher 3 update does that.
Great video as always! Hoping another for the PC version? :D
@@runningbear6391 Nope. I don't have the time to set up all kinds of mods for the game to look like this. And now there will be mods for this updated version of the game so it will look even better.
@@DBTHEPLUG I agree with what you're saying but the witcher 3 is one of the easiest games to install mods on. Some games make it a huge pain in the ass to install mods.
It would be cool to see a "Performance RT" mode like Spider Man and Ratchet even with a lower resolution.
right??? LIke lower the resolution to 900p or something, enable RT everywhere with 60fps and use FSR to get that baby to look like 4k
No.
1440p to 4K upconvert is best.
this needs to be tested against Halks mod.... When yall do the full breakdown please test the PC version against that mod because the Halk graphics overhaul makes the game look insane!
I've got it on both systems, still have my day one collectors edition (Xbone) from way way back in 2015, the best game I've ever played yet I've only played it through once, now is the time to dive back in.
They still haven’t fixed hair physics on Geralt at 60 fps. If you compare them with raytracing mode (30 fps) they move and bounce much more believably. There’s a mod on Nexus which actually fixes that. I was hoping that this issue will be fixed with the Next gen patch.
The tree's are not moving in the Wind like the original 🤫
@@whitewolf1054 the weather has always been dynamic on this game.... they dont blow in the same place at different times or weather
Eagerly waiting for the pc version analysis
THIS... is the video I've been waiting for.
I haven't played Witcher 3 yet, but I was thinking about jumping in after watching the TV show. I'll definitely be playing it now with the next gen upgrades.
You won't regret it
To be honest, it is hard to spot any meaningful difference between the two modes. Imo, ray tracing is not worth the performance hit. Instead, I'm really looking forward to a global lighting system like in UE5. That will likely make a way bigger impact on general image quality than just ray tracing.
I bought the game in 2016. I will finally be able to play it on my PS5. This game deserves to be played at 60FPS.
Is it me but the foliage and trees in the new version is super static compared to the movement in the old version.
Looks a real treat for anyone who's not played it yet.
It looks like they’ve removed the exaggerated swaying trees in the wind? Is that true? They seem very static on the new version. It would be a huge shame cause those weird wiggly trees were interesting
At the risk of sounding contrarian, I honestly thought the trees were alittle too crazy, and I found them distracting from me taking in the world, but thays just me lol
Different weather conditions, perhaps?
I just hope the get rid of geralts blowing hair indoors
