What do you think about these new genres that are made up years after the music was released? Like Yacht Rock about late 70s and early 80s soft rock, or Sophists-pop about music that emerged in the mid 80s in the UK which had elements of Jazz, Soul, and Pop? Acts like Simply Red, SwingOut Sister, Johnny Hates Jazz, Prefab Sprout, Sade, basis and Danny Wilson.
Part of me thinks it’s kind of ridiculuous because it’s after the fact while part of me thinks it’s pretty cool as it brings new life and interest to certain music, Today I”m feeling the latter so
On this installment of Revelations, I’m very excited to share a zoom session I did focused on one of my favorite songs of all time and one of the crown Jewels of Sophisti pop. the 1987 worldwide hit, Mary’s Prayer by Danny Wilson, with the band’s singer and songwriter, Gary Clark. This is one of the saddest most heart wrenching songs of the decade. It’s been reintroduced to new fans though it’s use in the films there’s Something About Mary and Blinded by the light, Gary Clark is very gifted songwriter and song teller and after this it will be one of you favorites if it isn’t already.

      1. The most buoyant, joyous, sparkling song of the 80s for me is In-between days by The Cure.
      2. Due to Nile Rodgers stamp on it, Notorious is my favourite Duran Duran album. I recommend the gloriously funky Skin Trade.
      3. The dandy Gregory Abbott doing verbal seduction with Shake you down? 😎
      4. A lot of fantastic songs from them, but my favourite is the pounding, relentless Alive and kicking by Simple Minds.
      5. I love the funk influenced Everything she wants and I'm your man by Wham.
      6. If its something goofy, then it's got to be Owen Paul's cover of My favorite waste of time.
      7. Another atmospheric track is Forever Live and Die by OMD
      8. Have you heard Half a world away by Paul Johnson? It's a mesmerising RnB number sung entirely on falsetto.
      9. He had everything - a magical voice, range, looks, style, dancing skills, lyrical ability and threw it all away with needless bombast. I do hope you cover TTD's Introducing the Hardline someday in this channel, one of the finest of the 80s. For now, I'll go with If you let me stay...
      10. To round up with something light, I'll add the two peppy singles of Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos (Blue Kiss and Rush Hour, both minor hits) because she's one of those 80s crushes!
      The hits never end... 🔥🔥🔥

Hey Prof. This is kit from Danny Wilson here. Someone shared this link with me via FB this morning and I've only just managed to find the time to watch it now. I'm commenting here IMMEDIATELY just to both thank you and to congratulate you on what , to my mind, is not only probably the best interview I've ever seen anyone do with my brother Gary, but also the most deeply insightful, respectful and down right soulful communication of your own perspective on this particular song and what it means to you. Thank you so much. You have a very special gift. Wishing you all of the very best for everything you do in life my friend. Thanks again, kit.

So strange to think of this as a hidden gem, this is my and my husband's song. We met in 88, we both say later, it was the thunderbolt. We were with other people, great people. We worked together for 2 years, becoming friends, sparring. I was about to leave the job. We were away for a night on a business trip. We stayed up later and later, talking and yes, getting drunk. He told me that he had fallen in love with me two years before but thought I didn't want him. I said the same. We went back to those lovely people and ended those relationships. We were married six weeks later and still are 34 years later. When he proposed, he kept singing " Blessed is the millionaire who shares your wedding day. Mary's Prayer, my favourite song that still m&kes me weep. So thank you!

I was in a band during the 80s/90s...We were about to embark on a UK tour, and Danny Wilson was our support band, I think it was 1988...I remember the first date of the tour, sitting in the empty theatre listening to their soundcheck, that realisation that the band who were going to open for you every night had better singers, better musicians, and better songs than you, and that you were going to be outclassed and blown off stage by your 'support act' every night of the tour...Gary Clark is an incredible songwriter, and that particular line up of DW was an amazing live act.

Thank you for this professor! When I saw the title of the video I knew it was about Mary's Prayer! It is undoubtedly the most heartbreaking and best written song ever. Even more so than Somebody's Baby. I don't recall hearing it on radio here in Canada back then, but I hear it in department stores.
It's one of those songs that we hear, and we don't know what it is, but we feel like we've known it all our lives. As for newly named music genres, I fall on the leave it alone side. Yacht rock? Hair bands? Those were not terms that would have flown back then. If you like a style of music, just admit it, don't invent a condescending name for it. Cheers pal!

Funnily enough, I've never associated this song with anyone in particular, yet it evokes feelings of despair, loss and vulnerability... and I cry, without reservation and singing like no one's listening.

I've had "Meet Danny Wilson" on cassette, CD, and now vinyl. The cassette was buried among my heavy metal selections in the late 80s and I never understood why I loved that album so much. A combination of songwriting and melody that I still find joyous and appealing to this day. I was so happy when I found "Be Bop Mop Top" in the mid 90s that I also picked it up on cassette and now on vinyl. Mary's Prayer's video was the door that led me to this band. 1987-- wow.
I was trying to get myself organized-- tired of wasting my time at parties, and needing a plan. I drove around one night outside of town and this song came on the radio-- moonlight through the woods, and it clicked with me. The road opened up as I got away from the trees and the song ended about the same time.
It was surreal, and I'd never forgotten the look of that night through my windshield.
Since the song didn't get much airplay, I lost track of it-- the title and the band. Then, I saw it here. It immediately brought back those memories. For myself, this song is totally about introspection and it helped me focus at a time when I really needed it.

Always was one of my favorites from the 80's. It was years before I could make out the lyric "ten Hail Marys" even though I am a clergyman! The production really shines, each instrument stands out so clear as does his voice. Some trivia: I am 100% certain the video I saw on TV in the 80's was not the same as any of the videos available on CZcams. It didn't have all the animation, more shots of the band playing with the jerky 3 second cuts so common in music videos. In the old video Gary is wearing very baggy clothes (definite Boy George influence) and his brother is wearing the same hat as on the album cover while they perform. Would love to find that version.
