*all of the wood in the custom vans was real wood back then and it actually almost ALL came finished with a highly polished laquer finish on it. but some of the wood didn't get sealed well enough if at all and between that and the torture from sun, heat, and people over the years not a lot of custom vans interiors survived well. Had that have been a full length van there would have been two of those table mount holes in the floor. that's how my old van was any how and mine had one of the most ridiculous looking tops on it ever! put it this way it went UP there. I am 6'5" and it was tall enough i only had to slightly tip my head to one side to walk through it from front to rear. Like he said though they sucked on gas. Mine was a Chevrolet G20 with a seriously tired 305 V8 in it. Understand it didn't GET tired over time, IT CAME THAT WAY NEW! once the factory quadrajet died on mine and the muffler fell off in like 1996 i added an Edlebrock carb and California Turbo muffler to it to make it a total street sounding custom van. it was still the land yacht from hell and was all over the road constantly. even after putting on a set of stiffer performance shocks. there just was no getting away from that lumbering i think i can little engine that could feel going down the road. the Edlebrock carb woke the 305 in mine up a bit but all it did was make a lot more noise and burn a lot more gas when i put my foot in it. I got stopped once in the thing and the cop told me he was going to write me a ticket for going 89 in a 50. then i proceeded to inform him "No he hell you're not, or you me and the judge are going to have a serious come to Jesus meeting. this thing only goes 82 miles an hour with the pedal on the floor going down a steep hill with a really strong tail wind behind it. (i got out of the ticket for calling his bluff) he handed me back my license when i asked him if he wanted to try it out for himself to see*

The 7.3 IDI is my favorite diesel. I have 2 ambulances with the IDI and one with 7.3 PSD. So easy to work on and cheaper than any other diesels. They have tons of torque and can pull down a house. Add a turbo and then you can actually have passing power on the highway, lol. And you'll enjoy 17-20 mpg. You can also use alternative fuels like used engine & trans oil! And the E-Series vans are actually easy to work on the engines. Once you take that engine cover off inside you have access to most of the engine. I've been working them since the 80's. ( the 6.0L diesel POS is the exception. They really suck to work on)

It had all the rear seats and things to install a hydraulic wheel chair ramp, then had a bench seat installed along the driver side of the interior so there could be a few more passengers. I remember that table anchor point being there as well as the custom anchor points to strap down the wheel chair. This makes me want to buy an old econoline.

IDI in the diesels stood for indirect injection, as the pre Powerstrokes used a pre-combustion chamber
And Centurian also made 4 door Broncos in the days prior to the Expedition and Excursion
(Were called C-150/C-250 if memory serves me right)
Could get them as a half ton or 3/4 ton, 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, gas or diesel (in the 3/4 ton)
These, the modified duallys, and the 4 door Broncos were really cool in their day! And to me, still really cool!

Ah yes, the 1980s and 90s Econoline Vans bring back my school years. The school district had models from the early 80s they still used into the mid 90s. They did have some Chevy and Dodges vans but they didn't last as long as the Fords in service. They were cheap to fix and reliable but spartan vehicles. They could take a beating from all the years of students climbing in and out of them. Ours had vinyl seats that would smell like chemicals, when the sun beat down through the wide side windows. I can still remember the smell from the engine and oil since half the engine is in the cabin. Every time you floored it the engine sounded like it was going to pop onto the front seats.
BTW, I had an uncle that had one of the touring Econoline Vans with the swivel chairs and a wood table. Very similar to a Centurion but without the bed, and had two captain chairs as passenger chairs. He and his wife used it to tow a large boatand took trips up and down the east coast US to visit family.

In South Dakota there is a frightful amount of these critters still rolling around. Although the Centurion name never was a full Ford product, they did move into luxury pickups like a Proto-Eddie Bauer in the form of the Centurion Mark III. They had wood trim, limo lights, leather interiors, fancy paint schemes, and fender flares that caused massive amounts of rust around the fenders.

Mr. Reg - Haven't made it through the whole video yet but a couple thoughts:
Another interesting product from Centurion (and what I always thought was their claim to fame) was the Ford Suburban (not the actual name). Essentially a crew cab Ford pickup with a Bronco fiberglass top on the back -OR- a Cowlings-style Bronco with a couple extra doors in the middle.
The excessive use of real wood wasn't uncommon in those late 80's/early 90's conversion vehicles (by companies other than just Centurion). Every example I've ever seen had a nice glossy finish (my folks had a Bronco (modified by a company named Show Trucks Unlimited) with a wood box on the ceiling that housed a small lighting array, wood drink holders (a lot like those vans), wood on the armrest/center console, and probably more that I'm forgetting.
If you made it this far, cheers and keep up the good work.

IDI is InDirect Injection - I believe after 94 they changed the design to DI - Direct injection

It's so cute seeing all these people talking about things from the 80s like it was the olden days and how quaint it all is and look it's real wood.
Good Lord am I really that old?

I don't knock the vehicles nor their afficianados. An interesting segment of the car culture. Thanks

The idi diesels stand for indirect injected so it’s got a little cup where the glow plugs and injectors go

So the inside looks like every other conversion van from that era, complete to the wooden cup holders that don't actually hold cups.
And under the hood looks like every other full sized van.

Spent precious little time in 80s conversion vans as a kid. They were the absolute shit (bees' knees) for kids back then, at least for anything that wasn't a drug dealer/movie villain Caddy or Lincoln stretch limo. Lights everywhere inside, captain's chairs that swiveled more than 90 degrees, plush carpeting like a house, oak tables and window sills, window blinds, 6-place AC, perhaps even a TV or two.
Actual RVs based on commercial truck platforms are obviously better in every way, though, cuz if you want to make the machine a home, you might as well just go big or go home anyways.

6.9 7.3 idi idi means indirect injection last of the true diesels 93-94 7.3 came with factory turbos I'd pick a 7.3 in that monster of a van-truck and rock it
