- E-Ink. It powers everything from the YotaPhone 2 to the Amazon Kindle. It's simultaneously one of the most understated and futuristic display technologies around. And it's being put to use in devices and venues you've never even thought of. But what exactly is E-Ink, and how does it work?
That's a question we had for the folks at E-Ink Corporation, the brains behind the world's leading electrophoretic ink technology, and they were more than happy to answer it. They invited us to tour their Innovation Center and Headquarters facility in Massachusetts to get a firsthand look at the technology behind E-Paper Displays, as well as some historical context and a few sneak previews of where E-Ink is headed next. Join us for this quick tour, and then visit E-Ink yourself for more: www.eink.com/index.html

the most incredible part to me was to find out that it doesn't use any electricity while it's idle, if we had a full color e ink display frame on our walls would be awesome to display some paintings
Could work in monochrome too
I wonder if thats possible... would be a great idea for a business
@@harryroberts9223 color e ink displays already exist
I looked up how e-ink works because I didn’t understand how a kindle could get such great battery life with a “always on” display. Now I understand that in a static state it’s consuming no power at all! That’s amazing! Great video!
this made me remember the newspaper videos in harrypotter. I though it is impossible to creat. now i think i changed my mind
Magic is science that we dont understand
Science is magic that we understand
Micheal Fisher has such an outstanding voice
I agree
Jiggle Squirt He's the only person who talks with that weird news anchor intonation that I actually like. He does it right!
wow that explains why my ereader last so long on one charge and how i never have to turn it off completely.
I believe e-ink is the future of display. Soon it will have true colors and fast refresh rate. Can't wait to have a large e-ink wall at my home, both as decoration and information display.
Shgyn Liong i agree. I feel like it has to be because of the sever strain lcd screens have on peoples eyes
We at Joan think so too! :)
No. Would be stupid to use it on stuff like tv and gaming as lcds are better in every way there, but i do love the aspect of reading stuff with near 0 power cost
dude he said future, so it might get better than lcds. probably. let's hope it will. no power consumption screen, who wouldnt want that.
fast refresh rate?
i thought e-ink has no refresh rate
Pocketnow Michael Fisher is the voice of "mobile technology "on CZcams. Always a pleasure to see your reviews and videos.
Rudra Pandya Many thanks for the support! ^M
You and jaime are the best
It's absolutely amazing reading on a kindle paper-white, been using it to read a lot of books since I bought it last year. It creates the same sensation of reading on a paper rather than painful restraints caused by an lcd screen over long period of time; simply amazing. However, I think, adding color is just a little useless if they don't improve their refresh rate; and those flashes, they should get rid of those. I would be a pain in the ass if yotaphone only use a current generation e ink display(or even colored e ink) as its main display instead of dual back-to-back displays with lcd, despite the extremely long battery life.
Michael, your voice and clarity are just astounding. I could listen to your voice narrate anything.
Very refreshing video. Always wanted to know about E-ink displays. Thanks Pocketnow, learned something today.
Very cool, I found this video interesting and would like to see more. Maybe start a "how things work" series video for mobile devices. Like nfc, sms, different carrier frequencies and how they perform (lower frequencies vs. high) and on and on. Also things like your sapphire video.
Andrew Mackoul Thanks for the suggestion! We're kicking off a segment called "Learn Something" on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast this week, hosted by *****. If you're not a listener already, you should be! pocketnow.com/tag/pocketnowweekly ^M
Pocketnow I never listen to podcasts beacuse just because there too long and I don't have the time. Also some aren't very succinct (I don't know about yours but a lot of them I hear they can get boring). I like short simple videos like this one. Thanks for the suggestion and for the reply! You should look into making those kind of videos. You have a awesome and clear narrator and people who want to watch them. I look forward to every video from you.
I agree with everything Andrew has said, videos like this I'd be sharing to friends and watching all the time.
You did not mention the best thing about e-ink: it feels like reading from an actual piece of paper, only better.
Pocketnow is becoming scientific :P It would be nice if there could be more videos like this, explaining the science behind what we use.
Would love for this to be more of a thing. We're always talking about what is in our phones but we never get into how it actually works. Awesome video!!
I would definitely like to see more videos like this!
As usual, good review!
hey thanks for this video, really interesting and well-explained :-)
I like these new videos featuring something from the tech industry. Keep making more!
Please thumbs up if you agree.
Going to save a lot of eye sight for those in fields that required staring at a screen all day. Hopefully we'll see laptops with this technology soon enough.
I hope so, I have a bad concussion and can’t tolerate screens at all. This would likely be much more tolerable
@@maybememory1 does E-PAPER emit lights?
@@itsnexx. No it dosnt. It reflects it. Therefore in a dark environment you could run into the issue of not seeing it, but some e.g. the kindle paperwhite, have the option to add a backlight making it possible to even read at night
@@chomp5558 thank you for answering. I bought the Onyx Boox some weeks ago and feeling good
Awesome video.
It would be great if you guys at Pocketnow create a new category for these kinda videos.
This does bring the point of what the displays can be used for, not the main, but summplemented display, imaging concepts of how they could be keyboards, covers, etc. for a device.
Awesome video! Michael Fisher is the man!
Why hasn't an E ink TABLET cover been made yet?? It seems more practical to me. I don't find myself reading long articles on my phone and I haven't bought an e-reader because I already have a tablet I spent a lot of money on. Not too mention I don't want tons of devices everywhere.
I have been thinking along those lines for a quite a while. I only wish an OEM can take up this idea.
The refresh rate of such tablets remain a problem, and some ghosting can occur. Simply put, unless you read a lot on your device, a normal screen just makes more sense for other practical applications. Still love this tech on my e reader, it's awesome.
Hello from the future. They now exist.
Very interesting. It’s also not just the battery itself that does not drain quickly like on any other average device. What is noticeable is that there’s far less heat being produced. The batteries on an e-reader (like a kindle for example) charge a lot quicker than devices that give out a multicolor display. Of course, weight, screen size, and material are an important factor that make the device’s performance vary. I might not want to dig too deep into that field just to make this comment short, but it is noticeable if you have several devices to compare side by side.
I just finished a Mr.Mobile video and wanted to know how e ink works. I search for it and this is the first video that pops out. I click and see it's Michael Fisher again!! I love how much he loves this tech world
Installation was quick and easy. It doesn't make a whole lot of noise, and it's worth every cent.
amazing hope more videos like these
Mr. Fisher this was an awesome piece. Pocketnow for life!
sedrick campbell Pocketnow. Pocketforever!
Shame not many of these technologies have prevailed in the last 6 years.
Ordered my kindle today regardless!
Remarkable 2 tho
I want that first epd watch!! SO COOL
incredible, I was reding now, just started using kindle and noticed it doesnt work with pixels at all, and was very curious about how it worked
had to come here after seeing that BMW at CES
I'd love if the Playdate guys would make an electronic ink display version. More battery life!! The problem would be... The noticeable lag. I dunno if more processing power would help because maybe that is just the limitations of the display itself. It's a very interesting technology and I need it for when I read
That’s actually so cool. I really want a Kindle now
great explanation. I just wondered when I got my kindle why they send me it 'power on'.
Very cool. Wish the video was longer, interview wouldn't hurt.
I love this technology ! ❤ Does not harm eyes.
These technology remind me on 1980 TV screen technology in Indonesia precisely at Sumbawa island (Where the place i was born for 5 years old in that time) and the brand is Sharp.
Well Explained !
Interesting yet very useful and sustainable Innovation
I came to see how a Kindle works and I got it. Good video
The "Remarkable" notebook device uses this and is very easy on the eyes. The slight lag as the display gets updated as was shown in this video can be distracting, but I'm sure that will be improved with time.
This is why the Pebble's battery lasts a week, as apposed to the IPS Panel of the Android Wear watches
I foresee a bright future for E-ink (pun genuinely not intended). Because I've seen the best in display tech, from lcd, to Plasma, to OLED. They're great.. But for reading, the brightness of these displays can quite tiring. I'm actually looking to get an E-ink device presently for this reason, to load my books onto to read without the brightness fatigue.
Michael... it's been a long time since he was with Pocketnow :D
I Love This Technology and think that the Yotaphone is a huge leap forward. The massive disadvantage of Smartphone and Laptop screens is that they are not easy to work on or read when you want tp sit in the sunshine.
I wonder if I could connect a second screen to my Note 4, on the inside of the cover?
E-inks remembers me of good retro80s🥰
Great video
Make Yellow/Blue, Red/Cyan/ and Green/Magenta ink pixels. Voila. You now have colored E-Ink.
Great but how would you regulate the intensity of each color? You'd also need 256 intensity levels for each color, to emulate current 24-bit displays.
thank you
Thanks!
When comparing reading on my phone and on my kindle.. there is a HUGE difference.. looking at the kindle is like looking at a paper.. much less eye strain and the battery can last for weeks
I am quite impressed.
I can see this becoming the future of paper, don't know why, and i also don't know why i can't say the same about tablets but i really can see that happening
Can we remove reflecting surface to create transparent image for this display? I am planning to buy please let me know
Im really interested in that sony tablet for school, anyone knows the model? Thanks in advance
Holy crap that's awesome
where can I purchase this flexible Eink paper? which is shown on 4:00 in the video.
Nice
Didn't expect to hear Mr.Mobile :)
Any idea which type of e-ink display would have better battery life, dark background with white text or vice versa?
Pocketnow 4:30 I want that gadget, how can I get one for my G3???? or is that just a prototype?
It's only a prototype dude
gosh i want to as an employee in that company !! :3
This is so cool.
Hell yeah! Science ftw!
Wow revolutionary
i wish they develop a e-ink add on for all phones so that we can snap that on, on a weekend trip and leave the power banks and chargers back in home and continue with the regular colour display on day today use
Housing for icing like is it great for like seeing and you will not get any eye strain or any effects through it or is it just the same as looking at a color screen
I’ve never understood why these haven’t been as big as LED-screened tablets/phones. I have a brain injury, and LED screens are horrible for my head. They basically strobe super fast. I wonder if something like this would be easier for those of us with sensitivity to ‘normal’ screens
Because they're extremely slow to refresh/update and have very limited colours and resolution. It's the slow refresh that really kills them for most devices. They're absolutely amazing for e-readers but not that useful for phones or laptops.
On a side note, it seems like maybe you've lost your persistence of vision, at least a bit. I'm sure it's not fun for you but it's very interesting as an outsider.
@@clonkex Just can hope that companies give more dedication towards e ink so that it one day becomes as good in terms of refreshrate and color. Probaply a hard task, yet not impossible and even 60 hz refreshrate eould be astonishing and enough for tge most of people. At least I would buy a laptop with 60 hz refreshrate and good colors e ink display.
@@chomp5558 I think it would be way harder than you imagine, maybe even impossible.
@@clonkex definitely hard, but if I learned one thing about technology, than it is that there is nearly nothing, which is impossible. It just needs some time. Especially the things I mentioned. There are tablets and phones out already with eink having decent coloring and quite good refreshrate (I think its about 15 - 20 hz). Onyx Boox Nova3 is a tablet having these features, while yes the colors arent compareable to lcd or oled and it also has noticeable bleeding at higher hz, but at the state of now it works and you can even watch videos with it.
i'd like to see a cooperation between e ink and evernote!
Great explanation MF... although some coverage on future multi-coloured e-ink display technologies would have been even better!
Michael fisher is best go-to guy for edgy tech reviews. Miss him
e-ink color, 16 billion colors with the same static power saving design. finally showing transitions, or just integrate the panel in front of an oled or amoled screen.
Ooh, saw some Swedish stuff in there :)
are/will RGB color e-papers be available?
i keep my phone screen on about half bright to save battery. many times i have been standing out in bright sunshine, i get a call, i can't even see who's calling, the screen is so washed out. i have hoped for a small second screen with epaper. yodaphone
Anyone know this song playing in the background? It’s a banger
i love that display better than hd screen.
Great
can we play games and go to fb with this display? or the colors are only blck and white?
underrated video
Yall the carbon footprint you’d have if you’re a reader and buy a kindle is astounding. I banned myself from buying physical books unless I have already and KNOW they’re a favorite and worthy of my library collection.
I have an pdf for all languages and few games on it and when i played snake looks like theres refreshing thing going on and when i exited the game the block stay there and i make residue so i i need to do is restard it
that's cool
They edit using Final Cut. You can tell by the transition.
Very nice tablet.
Is he on Grindr ? 3:45 lol
isnt that the stuff in etch-a-sketches?
3:03 ''Köp lotter här'' is in Swedish and means Buy lottery here.
don't forget it's easy on the eyes and feels more natural (like for a book)
I used to like my kindle, but its screen got blurred and is beyond repair, but my 3 year old ipad has no issue and features like 120 hz , pen support and ability to read and annotate on big pdfs make it more practical. Also while 1.5 year kindle gives 1.5 week standby, but ipad is giving upto 4 weeks life unused and 3 weeks if used as an alarm only.
It has a big battery
you do realise that your ipad has a humongous battery?
xerox also developed its own e ink around the same time
Anyone see that phone case?
michael you should do audiobooks, you'll make some good money
How does that e ink display work at night?
tenho um em 2019
came here to understand how BMW IX FLOW works…. we’ve come a long way….
...Does Al Sharpton know about the Black negative and White positive E ink device?
WHYD I HAVE AN FEELING THAT MICHAEL WAS IN THIS VIDEO BEFORE HE SAID IT? CAME HERE STRAIGHT FROM WHEN PHONES WERE FUN
E ink is definitely the next big thing.
