How E Ink Works

  • Picture this: a screen that doesn’t give you eye fatigue after staring at it for a long period of time, lasts for weeks on a single charge, and offers glorious full color.
Picture this no longer-this is reality. E Ink is finally in color, and 2020 could finally be E Ink’s year to shine. E Ink devices with color displays, like the Hisense A5C and the PocketBook Color, are beginning to hit the market, opening up the use cases for these devices. Imagine reading a comic book or manga on a full-color ereader. Pretty wicked, right?
E Ink was introduced in the late ‘90s, so this is isn’t exactly new technology blowing bloggers’ minds. But it is pretty damn cool, even today.
E Ink consists of basically the same type of liquid that comes in a pen. But instead of depositing the ink on paper like humans have done for hundreds of years, E Ink comes in tiny capsules the diameter of a single human hair. Within these capsules, pigments-commonly black and white-are bonded with a positive or negative charge. To make something visible on an E Ink display, an electrical field charge is sent to the bottom of the display, repelling and attracting the ink within millions of capsules until an image is produced.

My hope is continued improvement on resolution & color depth -- because color e-ink would be perfect for digital art frames. With no glare or backlight, the average person could have believable museum-quality artwork on-demand in their home.

My dream with those screens is to make a multi-game arcade cabinet that uses an e-ink display at the sides to display the same artwork the arcades had on the 80s and 90s

I bought an E ink reader today and was curious as to why I wasn’t getting eye fatigue after hours of reading, like I used to have when I read on my phone after 30 minutes, so thanks bc you really cleared that up for me. And I think it’s really going to be the future of technology once it’s improved well enough.

After a bad concussion last year, I can’t look at regular screens very long without eye and head pain. E ink is a game changer for people like me. I’ve always thought it was fascinating, and it baffles me why there are so many filters and glasses out there to help our eyes cope with LCD screens, instead of making screens like this that don’t hurt us.

Personally, I much prefer my ereader and iPad/tablet to be separate devices. The iPad Pro is a huge device (even the 'smaller' model) at little over 2x larger than my Kindle. Premium devices like iPad are also made of aluminum which is heavy unlike the lightweight plastic of the Kindle/Pocketbook.
Then you have devices like the Kindle Oasis that have an ergonomic design and physical page-turn buttons.
Would an e-ink iPad be great? Sure! Especially for artists looking for that paper-like feel but even with color those displays would pale in comparison to even a sub-1080p 60hz display. Can you imagine going from OLED/120hz to e-ink? Maybe in 5-10 years but by then LED displays will already be going to a territory that e-ink won't be able to touch.
