Game of Thrones: How Power Really Works
Game of Thrones is all about power games. What many people don't realize is that behind those power games are clashes of the way people see the world. There are clashes of frames. The people who can control these frames (like Tyrion Lannister and Tywin Lannister) tend to win over the Game of Thrones people who struggle more often (like Robb Stark).
There are tons of ways you can use this understanding of frames in your normal life. We'll look at three in this video
Note: the spoilers go up only through season 4, so if you haven't seen all the way to season 6, you are still good to watch
    1) Breaking frames for persuasion (Tyrion vs. Shagga)
    2) Frames in insults (Tyrion vs Robb Stark and Robb Stark vs. Jaime Lannister)
    3) Frames to create options (Tyrion vs. Tywin and Tyrion vs. Lysa Arryn)
Let me know how you feel about these fictional breakdowns! I have never done one in the past and would love your feedback. Especially let me know if you like Game of Thrones related breakdowns, because there is a lot more I could potentially cover (like Tyrion's charisma and persuasive abilities)

Also in quantum mechanics, interaction changes the outcome, so you don't know the result before you have it. Not all reality is deterministic and you don't just pick a state from a state space.

I was once teased by the school bully for wearing an unfashionable brand of jeans. I said to him, "It's true. I've never really cared much about following fashion trends. I always thought it more the sort of thing girls worry about." It did the trick. 1. I showed him I wasn't hurt or intimidated by his teasing (which leaves a bully without his main weapon) and 2. Left him either having to abandon the fashion concern or acknowledge that he was focussing on something that tends to be more of a concern for girls (which it was and probably still is), thus impugning his masculinity. He walked away without a word.

And, since people like that don't have a decent life of their own, they have to nose and meddle into other people's affairs and cause trouble.
I was never one to belong to any workplace cliques. People who belong to them usually have a low regard for an independent person who doesn't join up and fit in with their little cookie-cutter gang. Sometimes they have a tendency to be sort of like "office gangsters", so to speak.

I remember being with a friend who some class bully got upset at over something petty and ridiculous and felt he needed to assert his image in front of others with violence. He began to charge my friend with raised fist, clearly intending to start fighting. The bully was large and almost certainly a cinch to win the fight. My friend calmly and without any sign of fear said "well, this doesn't bode well for my recent dental work, wish I had put that off for a month." The bully hesitated and laughed, and my friend immediately followed up with, "I'm honestly confused, what are you angry about?" which forced the bully to then talk about it. Within minutes my friend had the bully convinced it was a simple misunderstanding, apologized to the bully for it and diffused the situation entirely, letting the bully walk away with his ego intact (and my friend with his teeth intact). Everyone who witnessed the interaction knew who really "won the fight".

The "create options" one helped me tremendously in life! Tyrion is extremely well written character and your break downs are the best thing on the internet!
As a person who's on the spectrum human interaction is challenging for me, I don't understand it and it would never come to me about this 3rd way, but since I watched this video I remembered this and used it multiple times when people were trying to take advantage of me. Creating the third option... Reminds me of how Daenerys got her army of the Unnsullied. It was set up perfectly there. She had two advisors, one said to sell the dragon for the army the other to not do it, they had several discussions about it. In the end she made the third option - Drakarys. Again, one of the most famous scenes of the show. She also made her own options when she decided to act like a real wife to Drogo, to walk into the flames with the dragon eggs, and I'm sure other times as well. She's a creative girl.

Funny enough, # 1 actually works very well for children in a tantrum. The best way to break it is to disrupt the tantrum by changing the site of the tantrum by moving them to another room. It allows them to disassociate with possible triggers or whatever it is that they are holding onto in that state. And then you can begin to talk to them about what their needs are.

I presented him some options that he wasn't happy about so i directed the conversation by listing some of the problems in a different part of the company. He then had the idea (or atleast he thinks its his own) to create a position in the company especially for me to solve the problems using my experience it that field. Saved my butt there 😅

I was in this situation recently and tried to present other options, because I have other related skills. It became apparant that my boss simply wanted me gone, whether it would be bad for the company or not. I'm not sure how to get out of that one. But, what I did do before losing facility access is have 1on1 conversations with the other managers in the facility and presented the option of contract work. What I really wanted to understand is if the decision to eliminate my position was mutual among managers, or an isolated decision by my boss. It was clearly isolated, which I guess might mean I have the potential to apply for other positions in which my particular manager has no jurisdiction. The only caveat is that, if I do turn in this severance agreement offered, I cannot work for the company for at least 6 months. 15 years of service reduced to nothing.

Yes, using an author to illustrate your points makes sense. Have you read Maria Konnikova's book: "Mastermind- How to Think like Sherlock Holmes?" She shows brilliant problem solving mastery level tactics and how to embody them as you seem to be teaching here. Highly recommended author.

Charisma on Command ... great presentation. This is truly power. One of these days you should have a presentation on how good people can overcome bad, manipulators in the workplace, school, and anywhere in the most emotionally intelligent and of course neurolinguistic way possible. Peace! Keep you work coming. It is simple, but brilliant.

Charisma on Command ... thank you! I am just inspired to speak my mind here and to point out things the very best I can. Like I have said on your other posts I have had the honor and blessing to have worked with someone to notice and work out these things too, so I get it. I just hope my comments are pertinent and that any suggestions makes the grade so you can modify anything you plan to present in the future. Peace!

I love this stuff, a new subscriber here. When explaining what ppl do daily it seems complicated until an example is given then you think oh wow yeah I remember when the same happens to me or I responded back in a similar way and I got the outcome I want. It’s not as intersecting when you just do or respond in a way that got you what you wanted after some clever dialogue but when the science of dialogues and why some responses work better than other, that’s interesting and because not everyone knows the science of conversation and dialogs and how to keep the upper hand, they just do what worked for them in life and got them success tho you do need to be somewhat clever, sharp and not shy to speak or accepting your options especially when what you rather have is not one. I’ve seen some ppl completely shut down in defense of their character tho claimed were false and I’m like why don’t you speak up say this or that explain this or that and how it came about and how one perceives is relative and all that but some ppl just don’t or don’t have the skill or bother.

I think going with Game of Thrones was a great way to relate with an audience. The writing/acting is amazing and lot of people can grasp the concepts. Nice job!

  • @Anthony_in_Bloomington_Indiana

This video is brilliant and insightful and educational!
It is really about social interaction and dealing with people who try to have power over you.
It is not about power on a large scale, say, for example, how Apple abuses and mistreats workers at their factories in China.

I utilize many of these techniques by instinct. I fear learning them, as I will then start to think about it too much, and possibly falter. I think I developed my instincts by being raised in a household of temperamental bullshitters. I was always on my toes. I feared angering people and had to appear as though I bought into their lies. I would then, by necessity, have to unravel some of those lies, while allowing the bullshitter to feel as though they were still in power. It was a horrible childhood, in most respects, but a hell of a street wise education.

I've heard it said that brilliant, creative problem solvers are created from people who had thorny issues in childhood. Just so you don't go seeking out people who treat you badly, because it feels familiar!

I wish Charisma on Command would do a video on successful sarcasm. Sarcasm can be a huge turn off and super charismatic types like Will Smith and Dwayne Johnson are never sarcastic. But others - Kathy Griffin or Chris Rock or Amy Schumer, for example - can pull it off.
