How Tywin Lannister Commands Respect in Game of Thrones
Tywin Lannister is a beast. He effectively served as king for many years under Aerys and wielded massive influence over Robert and Joffrey. He would have continued to be the power behind the thrones had he not been so horrible to Tyrion - more on that later - but that’s not the point.
In this video I want to explore why Tywin was able to command so much respect, breaking down everything from his body language to his strategy.

Tywin wanted to "make a man" outta Tyrion and punished him for marrying the commoner by making him witness a (pardon my choice of words) "gang bang". Tywin had no one but himself to blame for much of what Tyrion became afterwards. The thing is, all Tywin had to do was the bare minimum of being kind to Tyrion, regardless of his hatred. That would've been a lot smarter than outright hatred to keep his son in line.

    Excellent video!
One thing you missed though is how Tywin positions himself in the throne room. When he is named hand of the king he rides in on a horse, so the king doesn’t look down on him, their eye line is even. Later, when he lectures the king, he walks up the stairs so that he is looking down on him. This plays into how he positions himself in ways that convey power, like how he invades the personal space of Jamie and looks down on Tyrion.

Since animals aren't self-aware as we are, and have no deep notion of their actual physical power, the gorilla's response was entirely reasonable, it's only logical to back away if you're facing someone who's power you don't know, and who also does not fear you.

@@vugarfataliyev6544 This would not work with all animals. This is due to motivation - Gorillas are not predators, they are herbivores. Fighting for them is a social activity, to determine dominance. If that does not work, the Gorilla will not usually kill a human, in the same way that they do not kill each other when fighting. A hunting polar bear, on the other hand, does not have any interest in dominance - it sees a human (or anything else it encounters) as a mobile bag of calories, and the 'assert dominance by not reacting' technique would not work. Of course Humans as a species are the 'planetary apex predator' but that does not always apply down to the individual scale - go up against a hunting polar bear in the Arctic Circle, or a large crocodile or alligator ambushing from the water's edge, and no strategy of posturing or 'asserting dominance' will cut it.

I agree, killing Tywin created the dismay amongst the Lannister family. In fact I recall him breaking down the strengths and weaknesses to each of his children reminding them their not as smart as they think they are. I think Cerci will screw everything up for the Lannister. She does not have alliances on her own, only enemies. She has acted only on her emotion rather than strategy and tactics like like her father. However, if Cerci, Jammie, and Tyron did not have such dysfunctional relationships they could rule together with the collective insights of Tywin.

The communication techniques and body language are good points. But the inherent power vested in Tywin is what made him so powerful. He ruled the richest and most powerful military force in the 7 kingdoms at the time.
    Imagine the following two scenarios:
A homeless man using the same techniques to intimidate and achieve the upper hand. It would laughable if not for the desperate situation that the person is in.
The second scenario is a US army general commanding an expeditionary force that is marching into enemy territory. He has subordinates who are head strong and very stubborn. They are loyal but want to see the logic behind everything. These techniques will definitely help him achieve greater persuasive authority. Obviously its easy to just order people but you want people to not only follow orders but to take ownership of your orders such that they will give life and limb to achieve it.
In order to use these techniques there must already be a power dynamic built in. Tywin was always a powerful individual but he used body language to his advantage.

A Lannister never pays his debts. If any of them did, they'd all have been long dead. A Lannister will have his revenge, though. You see, a debt YOU pay is what you owe to someone else, not what you think they owe to you. And Lannisters, by and large, reject the notion that they could ever owe other people anything. They do embrace the idea that they are entitled to everything they want, and that everyone who impedes their acquisition of their desires is committing a mortal crime. So, perhaps more accurately, a Lannister always collects his due.

Talking of making people wait is soooo true. I do a very simple sales role in that I’m a membership consultant in a gym. Whenever anyone walks in I always invite them to sit down then just say I’m quickly finishing an email, spend 30 seconds tapping away then I fully engage them. When I do this I find I get much fewer objections to admin fees and fewer questions about pro rota billings. It very much gives off the vibe that I’m in the drivers seat here, so these are the costs, pay them.

Possibly the most powerful aspect of conversation is silence. The second most powerful aspect of conversation is your selection of words. The third is your tone. I’ve heard men with high pitched voices, who would otherwise sound weak, control conversations better than Stalin controlled his most trusted advisors. Being tall and having a deep voice have little to nothing to do with conversation. Your competence, intelligence, and confidence have more to do with conversation than how you look. If you remain silent for long enough and simply observe others, no one will take you for a fool until you open your mouth. However, if you’re smart enough, you’ll let others reveal their intentions before you utter a word…

*Spoiler* Olenna not only killed joffrey but is indirectly responsible for Tyrion killing his father, and he was the only reason why house Lannister was holding the reins. Joffrey was a monster, Tommen killed himself and Cersei is like a grown-up version of joffrey. Albeit a bit more self control. Tywin completely failed securing his house future in the future generation. Where as Olenna succeeded in that, alas she did get outwitted and they were killed.
