Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1218 hauls an excursion to Jacksonville Florida while Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 #3985 heads to Sacramento to participate in Railfair '91 with Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844
I heard that they're most likely going to sell 3985 to a museum. Since they got 4014 up and running and it'd be really expensive to return 3985 to service since her overhaul would cost as much and maybe more than how 4014's was
@@railfanjordan8141 if they want a challenger running, why not restore 3977 instead? that one has never run in excursion service and isnt as worn out so the restoration might be cheaper
@@lian3101 the key thing is that it'd also be too expensive to keep up and maintain all three locomotives in UP's steam program. And their steam crew isn't big enough to where they have enough people to undertake that kind of task to keep three locomotives up and running and maintained at the same time. Having two steam locomotives is a lot easier because they can easily take care of both of them and have certain tasks go through for each one. Another thing is that if one is out of service, the other can stand in and take over for the time being. Similar to how 3985 took over the excursion duties from 1999-2005 while 844 was out of service and how 844 took over the excursions after 3985 was taken out of service after 844 returned.
1218 on display today and 3985 in major overhaul today.
3985 isn't going to be running anymore
In 2010, the engine was taken out of service.
@@jacksalvin364 yes, but they're not going to bring her back since they already have 4014 running
Of course.
Yep im at the vmt
I wonder if these two beasts will ever run again. 3985 seems to have a better chance but it’s not impossible to see 1218 again.

Yeah I got the message from Ed. Whatever happens, I hope it will be treated well.
