      It's surprising to me that you make no mention of weight transfer to the outside ski, because that is crucial to making the ski arc so that it will carve.

      The most important reason is that skis are designed to work with all the skier load on one ski - at least for high end carving and performance skis.
      At low edge angles (15-20 degrees) the arc a ski will carve is the same no matter how much load you put on it. If you stand on one ski at 15 degrees, or you stand on two skis both at 15 degrees, they will carve the same mild arc. But at high edge angles, the arc a ski will carve is based on edge angle AND load. If you incline the ski a lot (45 deg +), and put all your weight/loan on ONE ski, the arc carved will be much tighter than if you are at the same angle but standing on BOTH skis 50/50. This is primarily a function of ski shape. At high edge angles you rotate the waist of the ski off the snow, creating space for the ski to freely flex. The higher the edge angle, the more free the ski is to flex into a tighter arc. Race skis are designed to carve their tightest arc at loads that are at the limit of human capability...in the range of 600-700# on ONE SKI.
      So, if you want to carve the tightest arc, you MUST stand on ONE ski. End of story.
      One more thing....CARVE those one ski turns...don't skid them.

    This is one of the most helpful videos I've found! I really appreciate that you explain just the right amount of science / physics of things. Many other videos I've found simply don't make sense to me 😂 this also explains why I'm great with left turns and suck at right turns... My right foot is dominant, so it's stronger and I have pressure naturally on that ski when turning left. Whenever I turn right, it's an absolute mess and I fall every time because I'm leaning almost entirely on my right foot instead of my left outside ski! Thank you so much for explaining this. Definitely hoping to use this and your other ski tips on my next ski trip!

To increase your outside ski pressure while skiing, you can try to slightly lift the tail of your inside ski. That should bring all of your weight to your outside ski. I hope this helps.     I’d come up with the same way as you (jumping laterally) to determine/demonstrate the difference between moving from side to side using the outside leg vs. the inside leg. One thing that puzzles me is why not all ski instructors teach skiing on the outside ski. I have no proof, but my impression has been that they think students lack the ability to balance on one ski at a time? As for myself, I teach it early on to students because the ability to ski on the outside ski is a fundamental in my opinion. //Marshall

      Hi Marshall, and thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic! Awesome that you have come up with the same way to demonstrate the outside ski vs. inside ski difference. I agree that outside balance is a fundamental skill. You may be right that some instructors believe their students lack the ability to balance on their outside ski. Even though they feel insecure about a 100% outside ski balance, the students would often benefit from improving their outside ski balance ability, so they can balance more on their outside ski. I like to use an exercise where the students tap the snow with tail of the inside ski. That way they only balance momentarily almost completely on their outside ski. With the tip of their inside ski being in the snow still, it offers a tiny bit of support and help the skier stay in the middle of their skis. I also teach this early on the skier journey when the skier is learning parallel skiing since it frees the inside ski from the plough position. I have seen many parallel skiing break through moments with this exercise. /Janus

    Another well filmed and extremely well explained video in a way we can all understand, could you let us know if its 60/40, 70/30 , 80/20 or even 90/10 % in favour of the outside ski on say a smooth pisted blue run??? I'm skiing Trysil for the first time for a week in March, hope to see you on the slopes and get more tips or a lesson, at least you will be easy to see with your lovely coloured clothes. again, thank you.

      The exact weight distribution will vary depending on speed, conditions, skier level, equipment etc. The ideal distribution also changes throughout the turn and maybe even from turn to turn, which makes it even more difficult to put a fixed number on. The main point is that many people will gain more control with more weight on their outside ski than they are currently doing.
      You CAN, however, actually measure the weight distribution with Carv soles (that I am using to improve my own skiing) and the best skiers have around 90-10% at the peak in the turn in their high end carving. The Carv soles measure pressure, edge angle, for-aft balance and much more. Based on these scores the connected app come up with tips and exercises to improve the areas in your skiing, that you will benefit from the most.       Thanks for your kind words and some excellent questions, Gary Haigh. 1. The inside ski does play a role in aiding the outside ski. When you measure weight distribution with CARV the best skiers are balanced around 90/10 on the outside ski when doing high performance carving turns (it does of course change constantly throughout the turn: increasing and decreasing). When used correctly the inside ski aides both a bit with creating directional change, but also as a "sensor" that gives feedback on how much you are leaned into the turn and if you need to adjust. I wouldn't deliberately twist the inside ski and create ski divergence (skis pointing in different directions with the inside ski leading the turn). Instead I focus more on making the inside ski light and on creating equal edge angles. It is more of a knee tipping than a foot twisting. I find that this approach enables you to have both the skis aid with turning while keeping the skis parallel and having proper outside ski balance. 2. The location is primarily Trysil/Norway, one of my absolute favourite ski resorts. I lived there for 5 months one winter and have visited almost every year for close to 30 years now.     Another very important reason to put pressure on the outside ski, is simply because the ski where you put the most pressure on, is the ski that eventually will become your downhill ski. If you would just put pressure on your inside ski, you wouldn't be able to make a turn (or at least a very bad one).

    Thank you for the video. I was wondering if packtalk outdoor would work with bicycle helmets with open ears. Not sure how you would install speakers. Any suggestions?

      Thanks for your question, @clee1177. In the Packtalk Outdoor box you will also find an adapter which allow you toi use a different set of headphones, as long as they have a mini jack cable to go into the adapter (and a microphone if you want to be able to communicate back) you can use those with your bicycle helmet. So, if you for example have an in ear head set with a mini jack cable, this should be possible. If you want to use the Packtalk speakers, I suggest you use a headband, buff or a beanie under your bicycle helmet. This should allow you to place the speakers underneath in the right place.       Hi @JGH2015Sara! Thank you for your question and I am happy you will use this channel to learn skiing. I am happy to help. Your inside ski is the one closest to the center of the turn. Your outside ski is the one farthest from the center of the turn. A little more detail: When you do a ski turn your turns draw half a circle or an arc. The new turn begins when you balance on one set of edges on your skis to another set of edges on your skis. There is an inside or an outside of the half circle you draw. If you imagine the half circle you draw during a turn continue all the way round in a circle, there will be a center point of that circle. The ski closest to the center point is your inside ski. The ski farthest away from the middle point is your outside ski. Your uphill and downhill skis are not the same as outside and inside skis, which can be confusing.
