  • Well....this was done over a month ago and I was reminded by the requestor that it was not done. I remembered recording it, and being blown away, but I couldn't find the file!! I searched through a couple hardrives and there it was, unedited. So here it is, it's about time, thanks for the reminder, Matt!! Sorry about the delay!
ALWAYS check out the original video and the band's content. Here's a link for the video.

Haruna is absolutely insane on this track. At times she’s being a soloist without doing a solo. As for Miyako, the evidence speaks for itself! Just wow!

    LOVEBITES - Swan Song lyrics:
If this was the last day you could live on this earth
Would you still go on, accusing someone for today
It’s better to fail than not do anything at all
It is not the length, but depth of life that counts
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song
    The legend of the swan
If you’ve never hoped, you’ve never been though despair
Ignorance is bliss, it’s easier to not care
You might think it’s meaningless to sacrifice a life
Sometimes the life of one can save so many more
    Oh brave soldier
    Oh gallant warrior
Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla
    Believe what’s in your soul
For death will come to all
You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song
    The legend of the swan
    Floating lotus
    You are so graceful
    Saintly and glorious
    Till the end of time
    Floating lotus
    You are so beautiful
    Sing me your sweet song

Great review, thanks! Miyako is a musical prodigy. As well as her mastery of both guitar and piano, its amazing to realise that she also composes these complex arrangements, drawing on her knowledge and appreciation of the classical composers, and mixing with tributes to the classic masters of metal. Which produces results like this composition. I think Champ expressed it best when he said we should be grateful to be alive in the time of Miyako.

@@Slippy6582 Yes, definitely add Hans Zimmer, and of course Tuomas Holopainen, who greatly admires Hans and has used his track Crimson Tide as a Nightwish concert opener. Plus brilliant cellist Tina Guo from the Hans Zimmer travelling ensemble (she has also played with Sabaton). They are all stellar musicians of our times, and not always given the accord they deserve, such is the parlous state of the so called music "industry", distributing commercial mediocrity to the world to enhance their profit margins.

Midori's guitar-work during the choral section near the end is simply amazing and significantly enhances the melodic aspects of the piece. Her tremolo-picked, palm-muted, arpeggiated chord-play throughout is also as 'demanding' as you mention. Their stamina (this show is 1hr 45min with only the piano intro as a 'break' from the relentless intensity for all.
Nothing can detract from Miyako's piano and two-hand-tapping... They are all just magnificent, imo.

Midori is definitely underappreciated. In any other band, she'd be an absolute superstar. Unfortunately, she's paired up with Miyako. Arguably (in my view), Midori is the better guitarist, but overall, Miyako is a Jedi-level musician.

Something to consider about Miho's contributions (& considerations for the new "5th Element") is one-third of all LOVEBITES songs, both lyrics and music, many of their thrashiest, though all different, lyrically and musically. Hammer of Wrath, Don't Bite The Dust, M.D.O., Burden Of Time, Golden Destination, The Apocalypse, The Final Collision, The Unbroken, Thunder Vengeance, lyrics for Miyako's music on The Crusade and again, music & lyrics for Journey To The Other Side, about her father's passing, possibly relevant to her 'withdrawal' from the band. Not a 'weak' song among them (all music, collaborations with Mao), and her performance style is Metal all the way! For me, this has been the "Miho Era" and I can find no 'fault' in any of it.

Chopin wrote his etudes as a way to train for one aspect of playing. This particular etude was to train the left hand to be as versatile as the right. You can see how much she uses the left hand in this video. I play some piano and I know that a person doesn't even attempt to play Chopin's etudes (at least in the way Chopin intended) without having 15-20 years of experience - and that's only if that time was spent practicing very hard. She clearly has spent many, many hours practicing on her Yamaha baby grand.

I've been waiting for this for awhile. Lots of people can react mindlessly but I wanted to know your take on it. I consider it one of perhaps two dozen true masterpieces in the history of rock. For your viewers who haven't gotten much into classical music, some background: Chopin (pronounced Show-pan) was a Polish-born Romantic-era (1800’s) classical composer and piano virtuoso who lived most of his life in France. He is considered one of the greatest classical composers of all time. Miyako, who composes a lot of Lovebites’ music, is a professional-level concert pianist, and was originally going to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and is now (quite obviously) an elite-level guitarist. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor) which she also adapted as the intro.

I’m not a musician, but I’ve never seen a more “complete” band than Lovebites. Personally, I don’t think there is anyone even close to their level. By “their level” I mean talent, composition, arrangement, live performance, musicality, consistency, and, for me, very important, their personality. A nicer group of people you couldn’t wish to meet. No attitude, no obvious egos. Until recently (like on my 100th viewing) I hadn’t appreciated how much this song is reliant on the 146cm Energiser Bunny on the drum kit. Phenomenal. And they do this, with perhaps one “relatively” slow song, for two hours. One last thing, nobody ever comments on the millisecond perfect pause leading into the last chorus. They all come in with quantum precision. Nice reaction.

That moment before the last chorus is bombastic. It's like a singularity, and I agree, every piece of instrumentals and the recording track meet on time, just to explode into the vocals! Epic!

HARUNA is a monster on that kit, but the closest thing to a solo you'll find on a LOVEBITES track is a 4-measure transition fill. Ironically, it's the EAGLE FLY FREE and PAINKILLER covers where the full fury of this rhythm section is showcased. Also all in for GASSHAN, she's got what LOVEBITES needs in spades IMHO.

hi ryan, thanks a lot for this reaction. I´m with you with the studiotracks: these contain more intricacies (with every listening you get other new details) and there´s no distraction from the music through a charismatic, graceful and energetic stage performance. " a frozen serenade" is a good example for that. and it´s also a matter of taste of course.
chopin has written two etude books. they are considered among the hardest to play piano pieces. the intro "revolutionary etude" is obviously a training piece for the left hand. the chorus is inspired by dvoraks "new world" symphony. and the back track incl. the finish contain elements of chopins "ocean etude", which is the last etude of the second book. besides her insanely guitar and piano skillz, miyakos ability to compose music cannot be praised enough. quick edit: "no time to hesitate", a last minute composition for the "glory glory to the world" EP also shows her compository masterclass very good. not many react to that piece, but it would be worth it.

Chopin's song that Miyako played as an intro is "Etude OP10, No12", which is generally called "Revolutionary Etude".
In 1831, a rebellion by some officers and civilians against the Polish government under the control of the Russian Empire failed due to direct Russian intervention. Chopin is informed of this news during his journey. He lost his place to return.
When Russian troops invaded Warsaw, Chopin's agents announced "Etude OP10, No12" in Paris. People called it a "revolutionary etude" because the agents exaggerated and promoted the song.
Miyako (guitar / keyboard) composed "Swan Song" with reference to this "Revolutionary Etude" and Dvorak's "From the New World".
Former ballerina Asami (vocal) wrote a poem with the image of "Swan Lake" on the basis of the historical background of "Revolutionary Etude".
"Swan Song" is a requiem dedicated to the warriors who fought to regain their hometown, and is a masterpiece that only LOVEBITES can produce.

Fairly new to LOVEBITES and working on collecting their diskography but I've seen comments that ASAMI's choreography at the end, when MIYAKO went back to the piano, was of the swan dyeing? If this is true, it's a shame the MV doesn't capture that.

Near the end of the song, Asami turned his back to the audience and expressed "The Dying Swan." Originally choreographed by Michael Fokin for the ballerina Anna Pavlova in the 13th movement "Swan" of Saint-Saens's "The Carnival of the Animals". Later, he also influenced Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" Odette.
Unfortunately, LOVEBITES has not released this song on the music video.
The movement of Asami may be easier to understand in "Swan Song" at "Live in Tokyo 2021".

Nice!, good one Ryan. The Prodigy. I´m not really a metalhead, I listen to metal but it´s not the music I´m usually stuck to. But I think that if I try to define some of the performances of Lovebites simply as "metal music" is really underestimate. Like Unlucky Morpheus I always associate their creations to classical music. The impact, the story, the virtuosity... Anyway, thank you sir!

I've only ever seen one reaction to this by someone with the chops to play the piano parts. According to him, it's every bit as good as we "lay"people think it is. He had some interesting comments on her choices.
Also, I'd really like to hear Asami sing in Japanese at some point. The fact that she can do those things with her voice while singing in a language not native to her astounds me. Rina is the only other I can think of.
I've occasionally found their lyrics to be slightly metal-goofy (I still like them, anyway), but not often and not here. Fantastic song. Nice job, Ryan.

Ryan, thank you yet again for your thoughts and comments regarding a band I've listened to occasionally. I'm not a Lovebites fan but that being said there are some of their songs that just draw me in. Like this song, especially the intro and the ending - beautiful. They are definitely outstanding musicians. And to those that love them, forgive me - this is just my opinion. I'm not a fan of the lead vocalist, yes she has a great voice, yes she has a presence but to me, her vocal styling sounds almost the same throughout various songs. Which at times works for some songs but for others, that I've heard, not so much. Again, to Lovebites fans - no offense meant.
