In the 70’s my grandfather has a 38’ sailing boat and was preparing for a world cruise. Part of the prep was learning using a light for code. One night he came across a military ship and he flashed them a code, he got a return message that when anyone flashes a code the captain has to be made aware and he was sleeping so stop it. Lol
I don’t know verbatim what was said but that was the best I could recall it. I have no reason to doubt him. He was a character though. He loved the sea. He was a ham radio operator licensed by the fcc and mastered coding. I never saw him use the lamp but he had on on his boat. He never made his world cruise. But he did sail to Acapulco from Los Angeles and back. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 91. I hadn’t thought of this all in so long it brings back so many memories. Him and his greek captain’s hat he wore only when he went to the harbor. Then just like how mr Rogers would change his shoes, when he worked on his boat he would change his hat to a green tam o shanter. I never asked why but just accepted it like it was something he did. Lol

Things to do to not look suspicious when a Navy Destroyer is nearby: Don’t have a ladder on your boat that is visible from the destroyer. (Optional but i’d do it.) Don’t drive your boat straight to the Destroyer (Common sense but needs to be pointed out.) Don’t leave the guy on the radio on hold. Respond and comply. Just keep distance, take your photos, wave goodbye, and drive away.

This happened to us when sailing back from Tassie to Sydney. Told to keep motoring and we were boarded by 3 guys with guns etc. asked if we were carrying any narcotics and, being a nurse, I admitted to the 5 amps Morphine and 1 packet OxyContin that were kept in the first aid kit. My father, brother and myself were on board and looked like the most unlikely of drug smugglers. However, it was unnerving being filmed by those in the boarding vessel and also on the Navy ship. Pleasant conversation for a couple of minutes but they declined a cuppa. Thanks Oz Navy; glad to know you are out there.

A friend of mine was in the navy and they opened fire on a Russian fishing boat with mg's cuz they were trespassing xD mostly warning shots tho. Can you imagine?
This actually happened to me once! My dad, brother and I were about 50 miles outside of San Diego harbor when we saw an Aircraft carrier out in the distance. It slowly started making its way over to us and the captain got on the mic and told us to keep our distance. My dad, whose father served in the Navy for over 15 years, jumped on the mic and said “whatever you say Captain”. They chatted back and fourth for a second and next thing you know we were about 8 football field away from the aircraft carrier when two fighter Jets took off! It was unreal. So awesome. That day we hadn’t caught anything, and then on top of that, the line starts going off! We caught our only fish of the day. A 50 pound yellowfin tuna. I was only about 10 years old but it’s a memory I’ll never forget. My dad always says it was his dad giving him a hello. God bless everyone serving their countries.
Depending on what the ships have onboard and the mission they are engaged in they sometimes extend their Maritime exclusion zone outwards in a 360 from their ship. Closing in on that zone will cause the ship to depend on mission and various reactions according to the current ROE. This is sometimes as high as destructive fire. There was a notice to mariners given by this ship on civilian channels listing what those zones are and how far from the ship you must remain.
I am very surprised the US Navy didn't activate their CWIS gatling gun against the Iranian patrol boats pestering them a few weeks back. Now those ships have Army Apache Helicopters on deck, just in case!
@@williamsteinhour4876 Since when does the U.S. Navy use Apache helos from the Army? The CWIS is not designed for use on surface contacts. It is for air contacts. The 3 inch gun is used for that as well as many M-2's and perhaps even a 20 millimeter here and there.

As for the Apaches, they have recently been part of naval exercises as a potential way to combat swarms of fast attack boats (again, there are videos).

This happened to us when sailing back from Tassie to Sydney. Told to keep motoring and we were boarded by 3 guys with guns etc. asked if we were carrying any narcotics and, being a nurse, I admitted to the 5 amps Morphine and 1 packet OxyContin that were kept in the first aid kit. My father, brother and myself were on board and looked like the most unlikely of drug smugglers. However, it was unnerving being filmed by those in the boarding vessel and also on the Navy ship. Pleasant conversation for a couple of minutes but they declined a cuppa. Thanks Oz Navy; glad to know you are out there.

This actually happened to me once! My dad, brother and I were about 50 miles outside of San Diego harbor when we saw an Aircraft carrier out in the distance. It slowly started making its way over to us and the captain got on the mic and told us to keep our distance. My dad, whose father served in the Navy for over 15 years, jumped on the mic and said “whatever you say Captain”. They chatted back and fourth for a second and next thing you know we were about 8 football field away from the aircraft carrier when two fighter Jets took off! It was unreal. So awesome. That day we hadn’t caught anything, and then on top of that, the line starts going off! We caught our only fish of the day. A 50 pound yellowfin tuna. I was only about 10 years old but it’s a memory I’ll never forget. My dad always says it was his dad giving him a hello.

Depending on what the ships have onboard and the mission they are engaged in they sometimes extend their Maritime exclusion zone outwards in a 360 from their ship. Closing in on that zone will cause the ship to depend on mission and various reactions according to the current ROE. This is sometimes as high as destructive fire.
There was a notice to mariners given by this ship on civilian channels listing what those zones are and how far from the ship you must remain.
Ever since the USS Cole bombing, most Navy ships get pretty on edge whenever a fast moving boat is coming straight at them.
I am very surprised the US Navy didn't activate their CWIS gatling gun against the Iranian patrol boats pestering them a few weeks back. Now those ships have Army Apache Helicopters on deck, just in case!
