I voted for Al Goro's as president after he made a documentary about how Scorpion and Sub-Zero were causing Climate change in the Netherlands-realm.
I remember being told that Bush was going to censor my video games and their shocked and angry expression cause I burst out laughing. Then I asked if Al was still married to Tipper, then laughed again with a Yeah, it's the Bushes that will try that stunt, yeah....
Did you know? Goro was a secret playable character on the GameBoy port of MK1. But who would want to play that? Play as him on the MK Trilogy!
It wasn't great for sure but you could link up for two player. Also it had kano where the game gear version didn't

MK is a vital part of the fighting game legacy. There is something special within the game, a variety of kharacters, and their journey. And it is totally optional if you want to use Fatalities at the end. Even now it's expanded with the same koncept, with just as much dynamic graphics & visuals.
🤔And when games Krossed paths with other media. Things were messy. But the age rating system definitely changed the way titles were marketed (and still has games in limbo)
Konsole ports were impressive. We had come a long way, and it was only the beginning

I once drew a small picture book called “Barney Enters Mortal Kombat” back in high school. Each page saw Barney the dinosaur getting gruesomely killed by the Mortal Kombat characters. My friends loved it.

I (and many) grew up with like movies like Robocop, Predator, Nightmare On Elm, Friday The 13th... Mortal Kombat didn't even come close to the violence and gore compared to what myself (and many) were already use to when it come to home entertainment. The drama of Mortal Kombat was nothing but laughable and ended up being free advertisement for the game.

This video really brings back memories. What a fond era in my life. I'll never forget seeing Mortal Kombat for the first time. It was at an arcade in a hotel we were staying at. The game terrified me! I had never seen anything so hard core. I LOVED it, and followed religiously until MK4. I knew the franchise was done for, once the characters had switched to polygons. It just lost its charm. I never really went back. I think MK2 was the best Mortal Kombat. MK3 felt unfinished.
I'd definitely love to see a follow up of MK2... but when are you going to talk about the Real Bout Fatal Fury series? Thank you Top Hat for this upload.

I didn’t play this game for probably a month after it was released in the arcades. The lines to play it were insane.
I would like an MK2 video, that was the MK I really played when I was young. MK2 was basically my fighting game childhood. It was considered the cool fighting game as compared to SF

While I don't disagree with a ratings system its just funny about the violence thing with MK since I was super young and my parents never paid any attention to it. And you're spot on about American politics. Its been shown in a Princeton paper that government has increasingly made laws based on corporations & special interests and less for the people

You should talk about “Yie Ar Kung-Fu”, a forgotten fighting game by Konami that came out before Street Fighter.

I played that as a kid in the 80's
Kids of the 80s and 90s up until about MK2 had plenty of ‘auxiliary marketing’ of R rated movies and supposedly mature targeted content, such as cartoons of Rambo, video games of Predator, and action figures of Aliens. Of course kids were consuming this content, and we grew up fine, but now I feel sorry for the kids growing up wrapped in cotton wool. I bought a manga for my niece when she visited Japan and her mother wouldn’t let her read it due to it having “content inappropriate for children”. It was a kids book, but parents have been brainwashed into being overly sensitive to exposing their children to any ideas outside of Disney cuteness and happy endings, and in a self fulfilling prophecy kids are growing up to be too sensitive to deal with adult life. The next manga I bought for her, I sent it to my parents house so she can read it when she goes to Nan and Pop’s place.

i remember how amazed i was in the arcade, sadly all the big kids were hogging the machine so we rarely could play it , but one day, my cousins got a megadrive and i got them MK for it since i was the eldest and could purchase it for them since i was 13 , story goes that on 1 sunday morning, my uncle came over for breakfast and he was furious...and he told me dad ''did u know what ur son got my kids ? he got them a game where a blue ninja removes the head of the other people and u could see the spine tangling from it, what kind of blasphemy is this ?''
man, it was one hell of a breakfast.......also, i was the only one in the family who could pull off the DULLARD code for it , so my cousins would be super excited when i dropped by to activate the code and play the game with the gore.....it was fun times, so simple and so happy.
i on the other hand got stuck with the snes version, sure, cousins were amazed how better looking it was, but no blood, i had to wait until i got the DOS version to get the full experience at home.

The original arcade game has the best style and atmosphere of any of the games in the entire series.
100%. Got a bit much with time travel etc as time went on. Always thought a 70s style film, with bad dubbing and stop motion Goro would rock.
I was the quote- unquote " targeted youth" that was supposed to be corrupted by such a game as Mortal Kombat. Unfortunately for them, we kids were ALREADY reinacting Bruce Lee/ Jackie Chan/ FOTNS and TMNT films... just like the song EVERYBODY WAS KUNG FU FIGHTING!

I remember the first time (high school), hearing the infamous Scorpion growling "Get Over Here" I quickly honed in on the location of the sound to find a line of about eight people waiting to beat the stuffing out of each other. It appeared as if the whole arcade just stopped and all eyes went on the two MK cabinets. I will never forget the first time I saw the screen turn dark grey/black and the words in dripping blood appeared "FINISH HIM" For a split second the place went dead (no pun intended haha) silent as Kano ripped the heart of Jonny Cage. I was both in shock and awe. I left that night thinking what the frog legs did I just see. Wow.

Great video, you can find videos about the Mortal Kombat controversy, but not a lot about how they innovated from typical fighting games.
Kinda funny, the games would go on to showcase every conceivable mutilation the human body could undergo, yet if it were to show bare breasts, people would really be outraged.

I remember being 12 years old and my mom forbid me and my brother from playing MK. That just fueled our passion to play it more. As a young child i remember saying to myself out loud, "when i grow up im playing as much MK as i want". Now i am and i do.

Absolutely brilliant video, I must ask & hope that all hard core MK fans have seen The History of Mortal Kombat full movie, by 616 Entertainment. I only knew that Van Damm was originally meant to be in MK as the Johnny Cage roll, but was working on the Street Fighter 2, but I didn't know that he, was working on another fighting game that fell through. Maybe next video if any footage of the game was made.
What if: There were other clone characters other than the ninjas?
Grew up playing the MK games then, and around the same time I watched Big Trouble in Little China and saw similarities.

Waiting for the coverage of the Ranma 1/2 fighting game series, from all three sides of the pond (You got a pure version of the first fighting game, while we got Street Combat, but you got Adeline and Bamboo as opposed to Akane and Shampoo).
Admittedly, some of the games are a bit bloody and violent but as a whole, I think mortal kombat is the best fighting game series ever made. The diverse characters, the effects, the moves and the music are amazing.
I love your videos, but a little critique is that the character at 6:02 is called Kenshiro, not Kenshito

Guys like I still find enjoyment with the games that we grew up with that's all there really is unfortunately the conglomerate video game industry that seems so out of touch to realize that they could just do these things for all gamers are too busy not paying attention to what the game is really want When it comes to gaming I can only think truly of a handful of games that really are worth mentioning

I've been writing a comic for awhile called TransCat, and in one of the issues, TransCat's friend Ron runs afoul of a haunted arcade machine which possesses his mind and turns him into a mindless violence zombie. Upon discovering what has happened, TransCat mournfully exclaims "oh my GOD! Joe Leiberman was RIGHT!" before jumping into battle with her best friend, attempting to snap him back to his true personality.
