Straight from the heart. Yatinder ji Namashkar 🙏🏼
Aapki mehnat aur apke zikr ka koyi equal nahin hai. You have made India proud and you have proven that fitness enthusiasts and body builders are not duffers jo dimaag ke dheere hote hain.
Aapka bolne ka andaaz tho accha hi hai. But more importantly, aapka soch kitna saaf hai, woh hamen is video ke zariye pata chala. That comment about the person being good or bad (as opposed to the profession being good or bad) is a perfect example. Everyone takes back what they invest in any endeavour. You get what you put into it.
Yatinder ji.. you should know that you are a source of inspiration to millions. I am much older than you and I have no hesitation in saying that I look up to people like you.
I want to take this opportunity to share one personal story in the hope that it will help others :
Aapke jaise professional tho nahin hoon. But as a sports and fitness enthusiast, I suffered a slip-disc in my early 20s. I had to undergo treatment and even at that young age mujhe bola gaya ki I could not do many of the physical activities that I desired.
I felt afraid initially. But dheere dheere I started doing some activities and ran my first full marathon at 26. But while I somehow managed to remain active, I always took care to not lift heavy weights and to not stress my back. In fact, safar par bhi mere parents mujhe luggage uthane se mana karte the.
But, jitna bhi mein apne peet ko sambhal ke rakhoon, my back kept attacking me. Back in 2015, I spent almost 6 weeks remaining horizontal with shooting pains down my legs. I could not go to office or even just sit on the sofa without pain.
Two back to back (no pun intended) MRIs and the usual doctors' visits yielded the same advise - "do nothing that will remotely resemble a normal day's activity. Pack up all your dil ke quaishen aur chup chaap apni aukaad mein raho. Ek middle aged uncle ho tho vaise hi harkat karo. Uske aage sochne ki himmat mat karo."
Then I stumbled upon an orthopaedist who said this to me - "If I pull a 100 people off the street and have their MRI's done, 95 of them your age will present with the same picture. There is nothing that is differently wrong with you that isn't wrong with those others. So, you can decide if you want to live your life or if you want to always remain afraid. You are a full grown adult; use your common sense and do what you think is right."
That did it. In early 2016, after tiptoeing around the barbells in the gym for 22 years, I finally signed up for a supervised deadlifting program.
Today at almost 50, I am deadlifting almost 400 lbs which is twice my body weight. Body tho aapke jaise nahin hua. But mere back problems gaayab hi ho gayen. Disappeared. I have not had one bad bad back episode in 7 years. I have run many many races since (either 10ks or half marathons); plus on 6 or 7 occassions, I have completed motorcycle rides in which I have covered excess of 1000km on a single day.
Sometimes the risks that you run from are exactly the risks you need.
My life goal is to cross a 400 lbs deadlift and to do at least more one more full marathon. Hoga ki nahin, yeh tho mujhe pata nahin. But mujhe yeh zaroor pata hai ki apni manzil ki ohr kadam rakhte jaana mera karam hai. Baaki eeshwar ki kripa. I am a patient man. Tho dekhi jaayegi.
More importantly, mere bacche dekhte hain ki mein roz gym jaata hoon, ya run karta hoon, ya kuch aur fitness ke activity mein laga rehta hoon. Mera hope hai ki this will serve as an example for them ki apart from one's profession or work, apne aap ko occupy karne ke liye fitness activities are a better option than to while away time with idiot friends who have no goals in life other than to drink and waste time talking rubbish.
Thank you to ANI for inviting Yatinder. Please bring more sports people from all different levels in the country. There are many who are labouring in anonymity with only their faith and determination to help them keep going. Eg: Many don't know that there are doyens like Chandrakant Pandit who have dedicated their lives to keeping the quality of cricket highly competitive at Ranji levels. Go listen to his coaching lores and you will be amazed and humbled. It is entirely due to people like CKP that we are enjoying a rich cricket harvest today.
    Jai Hind.

@35:20 Smita madam... To answer your question about how busy people (especially women) can get a handle on their health, let me try an analogy:
When you fly next time, please ask yourself why one of the safety announcements goes somewhat like this - "... if you are traveling with a child, please make sure that you wear your O2 mask first before attempting to help the child with you."
Kyunki agar aap theek nahin hain tho aap apne apnon ke liye kuch nahin kar sakte hain. So if we start thinking of our health as a necessary ingredient in the health of our children and families, then the whole picture changes.
@43:20 speaking to the question from the gentleman on the right (with the reversed hat); the crucial element of bringing about a positive change is not really about what one is going to do once one gets to the gym (although that is a fair question and having a plan when you enter the gym can only work to your advantage).
The real differentiator is habit formation. What you do in the gym is less important than actually getting to the gym. So the first step is to work hard towards forming a habit. That is what Yatinder was saying when he said we don't forget to brush. We don't forget to brush because we don't even think about it. We just do it. Because that is a habit that has been burned into our brain circuitry.
An exercise habit helps your health in countless ways. But the first way it does so is by eliminating the mental self-negotiation that happens within ourselves about starting to exercise each day. If it becomes a habit just like brushing teeth, then you would do it without even thinking about it. That's the key.
Sorry about the soap box. 🙏🏼 But I thought I would offer up these suggestions as I felt that these points weren't properly flushed out in the conversation.
