I come from an olive oil producing family. Figuring out the quality of your olive oil is very important. Greek olive oils are some of the best in the world. Most Greek olive oil is purchased by Italy and Spain to mix with their lesser quality olive oils that these nations produce. Or they tend to sell as "Italian" etc. Many olive oil brands are also diluted with "other oils" making higher profit margins for companies. Avoid olive oils in dark green coloured bottles....excellent olive oil should be dark green by nature.
Thanks. Aldi - dark green glass bottles 🙄
See the colour when pouring it out of the bottle. Dark bottles help it against getting rancid 🤗
Can we mail order Greek EVOO?
@@happycoyotestruthsaboutpea1706dark green bottles maybe, but oil within is not so green…🤔
What color should the bottle be?
As a farmer and producer of Organic EVOO, I would like to thank for educating people to choose carefully.
im from South Africa what brand can you recommend to buy especially in Cape Town as I'm not familiar with olive oil
Thank you! “No farms…no food”!
I have a “great value” (against my better judgment),it’s says EVOO….. And has a Best Buy date, but no harvest date👎🏾
Good job, doctor! As an olive oil producer, I will just add a few info. The “refrigerator” test is not always accurate, but if you want to do this test on extra virgin olive oil, do it in small quantities. Not all over the bottle because the bonds of fatty and phenolic substances break down during thawing, resulting in a lower quality oil. The optimal extra virgin olive oil storage is between 12 and 22 degrees Celsius. It is essential to underline that once the bottle is opened, it must be consumed within approximately 15 days. Extra virgin olive oil fears both exposure to air and light.
Mr Bellini, thank you so much for adding this info. I have been scouring the internet to find the good olive oil. You have helped me immensely.❤❤❤
I was born in the region of Calabria in southern Italy, I know very well how olive oil should taste. We in the family owned many olive trees, and I and all my siblings took part in gathering the fruit, taken to the mill, and even watched when the oil was extracted. Of course olive oils do not taste all the same, all the regions of the peninsula produce oil including the inlands of Sardinia and Sicily. Most the oils in all the regions are made with many different kinds of olives, and this make the oils taste different but equally delicious.
@@christy7344 it depends on the region, the type of olives, and the type of soil. I know where I came from it moe greenish, Sicily and Sardinia could be some of the same olive 🫒 and some different which the oil could be more golden. Remember of all the peninsula making oils, they taste different, and look different but equally delicious.
My daughter was just in Morocco and she brought me home a marvelous bottle of green mud, no I meant olive oil. The writing is all in Arabic so don’t ask me what it says. Best stuff I’ve ever had. I’m going to cry when the bottle is empty 😢
You can use Google translate & other methods to search for the bottle online. I’m sure you’ll find it somewhere to purchase!
I drank olive oil for a month to fight skin problems I had and you wouldn't believe the compliments I received from others telling me how beautiful and glowing my skin was. There are many many other benefits as well for internal organs. My source is Kirkland olive oil from Costco from Italy only.
how much did you consume daily?
@aulakhk16 I did a small espresso cup, squeezed 1oz of lemon at the bottom(helps with the bitterness of oil taste) and 2oz of olive oil on top and took it as a shot on am empty stomach either first thing in a.m and also last thing in p.m
@@TheDannyVGI only use Kirkland also, I'm going to try this. Thank you for sharing 😊
@@TheDannyVG
Did the Kirkland olive oil pass the test? That Dr M is referring to in this video? I’m so curious! And thank you for sharing your experience with olive oil for your skin !!
Always be careful when purchasing olive oil. Make sure to look for "Italy" only. Many brands even Kirkland has some that specify it is from Italy, Spain, Greece, Etc. I ONLY buy Kirkland Italy only, no blends of olives just one source. It is also one of the only Bobby Approved olive oils. Check him out and follow him if you have not yet.@@kyleneanderson6250
If it doesn't give a burning sensation w/ U swallow, & if it doesn't solidify in refrigerator, its not true olive oil❤
So u saying I bought 20 dollar olive oil for no reason bc it didn’t burn my throat
@@justpitiful6339 usually that means it's a mixture of oils, make sure u read ingredients & if it came from more than one place of origin which is usually a mix of oils, also if it doesn't solidify in frig overnight its not authentic olive oil
9@@goldie6649
They can and do add 🌶 peppers to fool you.
@@justpitiful6339Did you take it by the spoonful? If you had it with food you probably won't feel the burning. If you take a nice big spoonful of it and just swallow it, that's when you should feel it. I bought one with a nice color and it burns my throat but didn't solidify, so who knows if it's a good one.
Olive oil should be used in the first year after pressing.
The taste varies depending on weather conditions and the time the olives have been harvested. Some places harvest them very early and the olives and oil are green, the taste is fruity with a "bite" in the throat and the acidity low. That is the best oil for health. Other places prefer to let the olives mature and they turn to light brown and the oil is yellow and more sweet with higher acidity. Acidity should be written on the bottle and should not be more than 1% for extra virgin and it depends on the weather through the whole year and the time of harvesting.
Oil from hills and mountains is in general of superior quality than that from valleys.
Extra virgin oil is sometimes mixed with cheap refined olive oil that still freezes so the freezer test is not that accurate.
Never buy in plastic bottles, metal also not that good
@peterpeper4837
Do you know another method that can be used to test the quality of olive oil ?
@@ananke2104
You can not test it at home unfortunately. You need to send a sample to a lab.
Even producers have to send a sample to determine the acidity of the production.
In very few countries the acidity has to be written on the bottle by law, then you more or less know what you get, at least in that respect, but in most countries it is not written. Still acidity is not the only factor for quality but it is important that it is low for health. The best judge for quality at home is taste, but you need to develop it by using high quality from a local producer that you know and trust. The very best is light green and cloudy with a very fruity taste and low acidity. After three months of the pressing date the particles of the olives that make it cloudy are settling to the bottom and are oxidised and that rises acidity too.
@@christy7344 I do not live in the US, I would not know. But even in countries that produce lots of good olive oil like Spain and Italy, nothing in the supermarket comes even close to what you can get from a local producer who produce first and formost for their own families. Try to get local oils if you can
Excellent
@@peterpeper4837 ~Thank you for the good information. Do you know if an inexpensive Italian olive oil called “Gallo” any good?
I'm 73. Every morning I eat a huge family size salad with about 20 vegetables with Organic extra virgin olive oil and organic apple cider vinegar with my own blend of spices that I put together. Last time I had a health checkup was in the 1970s. I exercise regularly but moderately without overdoing it. I'm a cyclist I don't have a car so that keeps me in shape and I spent most of my life as a carpenter. I'm the same weight now that I was in my twenties. I don't even bother to renew my health card cuz I've never really used it.

You said it the way it is Doc....I am living in Greece and i have my own production .THANK YOU inform the people the right way
As a rule of thumb, don’t buy any olive oil that doesn’t have an expiration date. When you find one that has it, be sure it is good at least for more than one year from the date you purchase it. European Olive Oils also can be labeled DOP (red sticker) or IGP (blue sticker) and these labels are given only to high quality olive oils. Some of the red sticker oils (DOP) also have the “vintage” printed on the label. As of now (9/23) look for 2022 harvest, since 2023 harvest is just happening now. Last thing: when you buy good olive oil, use it! Don’t keep it open for months. Open it and use it in a couple of weeks max. It starts to degrade immediately after pressing, if you expose it to oxidation it won’t last more than two weeks tops.
My brother has a small farm in southern spain with a few olive ,last year I had a bottle of the first pressing, never tasted anything like it..amazing..

I get Spanish olive oil from Costco. I like the flavor and the 'bite' it has.
I figured that a company like Costco wouldn't want to damage their reputation by selling fake olive oil.
Real olive oil is an acquired taste i would say, it's pretty strong when you're not used to it.
It reminds me of the taste of under-ripe/green bananas. And it grows on you quick. I finally understood why people drizzle it on absolutely everything even icecream
@@markroberts7001 I drizzle it on top of everything salty; I have yet to try it with ice cream, though the idea isn't palatable, but it won't hurt to find out.

I saw a study that said that they tasted most of the major over the counter brands of extra virgin olive oil and found that none of them except for one was actually extra virgin olive oil. The one that they tested that they said is actually meets the European rating to be extra virgin olive oil was the Kirkland extra virgin olive oil sold by Costco I think Sam's might also have it. This is what my wife buys. Thank you 👍
Kirkland is mixed

Harvest and expiration date
Grassy smell
Better in glass than plastic (especially dark glass)
Thickens (cloudy) if refrigerated
Got it. Thanks!
Don't forget cold pressed and make sure it's extra virgin.

Love THIS! Indeed, just started a day ago and will be using Olive Oil daily going forward with my life. Very much appreciate your genuine expressions and information, sir. 🌱
so many helpful tips, thanks Dr Mandell!!
I get mine from Portugal…Oliveira da Serra is a firm favourite ❤️ Thank you for a very informative video
I have been using Simply Nature brand organic evoo sold by Aldi, from Tunisia. it passes all the tests, has an expiration date and a certification #. It is however pretty cheap, six dollars for a 16.9 oz bottle. One benefit I've experienced after taking 2 tablespoons before going to bed, is a great nights sleep, hoping that over the long term it will help my arthritis.
I have my own farm olive/olive oil , I am not mixing varieties to test them in lab separately. I know the polyphenol/ acidity/ proxied levels (pulse other parameters). Really after researches me, family and friend found the benefits of this golden oil after one year of diet based on extra virgin early harvest, cold pressed olive oil.
Thank you Dr. Mandell!!!🍇💕

Thanks for that advice! I use Mena olive oil. It is single source & has on bottle where in the orchard the oil came from, & of course the expiry date. I'd never before had the slight peppery taste @ back of throat before, before tasting Mena. Don't let the description of the pepper taste put you off as it is only slight & when you cook with it, that peppery taste is not present, so don't let that put you off. The only thing I DO NOT like is that it is sold in plastic bottles. I think that's how they keep their costs down...& of course less breakage possibilities in shipping because Mena olive oil comes from the Motherland, primo land of Morrocco! That's what I hear is the best place to get your olive oil. According to Dr. Gundry Moroccan olive oil has the high levels of that ingredient (can't remember what it's called, but Moroccan olive oil has the highest levels out there)...but what led me to Mena olive oil was because I COULDN'T AFFORD Dr. Gundry's olive oil. I can tell Mena olive oil is quality, but yet AFFORDABLE. I was ordering Mena online, but I about fell out when I saw it @ Publix grocery store. That's where I get it now, & it's very affordable.
It’s not Mena but rather instead it’s called Mina Moroccan extra virgin olive oil, cold extraction, single origin.
