That moment when you’re starting to get into Jazz and want to buy a ride cymbal but every last one of them sounds so amazing that it’s impossible to choose
Not impossible, just buy them all 👍🏽🤣
not impossible...the 22" Zildjian K con medium thin low is in every guitar center I know. It's great...If I went Zildjian...it's the one I'd get.
Ima be honest, very few American cymbal companies stack up to Istanbul, Bosphorus and other Turkish cymbal companies when it comes to jazz pies.
@@cmt8485 funny thing is most of the geeats had 2 choices As or Ks... the rest was up to them to get the sound they heard in their head
@@bryanherward4679 no you are right… if it’s discontinued or vintage, then it’s Zildjians best work by far. I do agree about that. I’ve got a pair of 60’s paper thin 14” a’s and they’re my favourite hats ever!! - however the two main cymbalsmiths in Turkey at the time responsible for the legendary K’s eventually left Zildjian and started Istanbul which are hands down my favourite right now. I’ve got an agop signature ride and oooh baby you can definitely trace the lineage back to those sweet sweet original K’s.
The Paiste Masters Dark Crash Ride 22” sounded best! Thanks for this great comparison!
The Meinl Byzance Big Apple Dark Traditional 22" was wonderful! It was hard to pick my favorite because they are all so nice. Thanks for making this!
Big Apple is a beauty-agreed.👍
Paiste Signature Traditionals Light Ride, Zildjian K Constantinople Thin Overhammered Ride, Paiste Masters Dark Crash Ride
Big shock. The Mel Lewis sounded the best. I was really surprised how good the first Paiste sounded.
I think it's important to include which sticks were used in the demo as it makes a big impact on the sound, oh and that intro was excellent 😆
Totally agree! I don't think I've ever seen a demo where the type of sticks are mentioned. And it can make a huge difference.
It's very important yet, nobody includes it. SHAME!
I agree. It would also have been nice to have the same diameter across the board.
The best stick tip in my opinion is a barrel tip
@@levysgaycorner352 Different tips (within nylon or wood groups) can sound very differently from each other when used on different cymbals. I carry a small cymbal stick bag for the specific cymbals I use on each gig. These cymbals will depend on the size and type of music played for each venue (large vs small, acoustic jazz or light pop or larger swing or classic rock).
My drum set stays the same but the "ammo" used changes as needed. I do not have one specific size or shape of stick, other than length. The conditions control these choices.
That Mel Lewis is 🔥
Some great cymbals here. I usually don't like Sabian cymbals as much for rides but that 22 hhx was fantastic and had a great crash/ wash and great stick definition. But that istanbul Mel was so freaking good. One of the best rides period. In fact the istanbuls really outshined the other brands in this comparison. I'd be happy with any of them.
Absolutely.
Istanbul makes the best cymbals. I don't even consider buying other brands anymore
yeah...if it's a jazz ride you're after...hard to beat Istanbul Agop.
@@bryanherward4679 Very true. I own the 21" traditional dark ride, and it is fabulous. most bersatile ride I have ever owned.
Totally agree. Stick definition was great with little "overtone". My ear liked it alot.
Nice to see Tom back in the mix of things! Great video(as always)
All of these cymbals sound great. My favorite in this test was the Mel Lewis 22”.
I am not a jazz player at all - just never been my forte - but I liked the Mel Lewis the best as well. So, not the best-informed opinion, but it sure sounded great to these non-jazz ears!
Jason, at least you watched and enjoyed the cymbals and that’s what counts. You were able to appreciate those instruments. That is very cool.
I think twas the testers too!
Always a pleasure to hear you make the gear sing....
There needs to be a part 2 because there's no agop 30th or kerope which are 2 of the kings of modern jazz rides
Are you talking about zildjian K or kerope? They stopped making kerope cymbals i believe…
The first Paiste and the Meinl big Apple were amazing!
Very helpful. I liked the Paiste Signature most and bought it in the end, after careful testing at my local dealer (who is a big fan of your channel, too).
IMO, Paiste Traditionals 20” light ride.
Always love your playing, Tom!
The Mel Lewis Ride and Goodnight! Lol
I basically loved all of the Istanbuls…They’re what I like to hear in a jazz ride.
The Istanbul Signature 24 with the darker wash and ping brightness made it sound like it was raining.
I Love it! Perfect balance for my taste
I also liked the Meinl Big Apple Dark Traditional 22
Y'all win the internet for today with that intro!
Paiste dark crash ride was my fave …. Had a lushness and nice bell 👍
Well, for me it's the two Istanbuls: Special Edition 21 and Mel Lewis 22. Would love to hear them in a set
All of these cymbals sounded great, but if I could only pick one thing from this video that I liked the best it would be that Gretsch snare drum. Wow! I haven't played one in years, but they really are making some excellent sounding snare drums these days. And Tom's playing is superb. Great video as always guys.
I appreciate the JAZZCORE intro 😋 also, all of these rides are winners, not a bad one in the bunch!
best intro ever
What was that song
I love the paiste traditionals, used it on the last couple of albums!
Thanks for the effort in putting this together, an incredible video! Theres a reason I combine K Con and Paiste masters best of the best 💪
All the cymbals sound great. I was given a Dream bliss 22 inch ride by a friend to try out. I had never heard of Dream cymbals at the time my friend gave me the cymbal. I was very impressed and use it as my main ride cymbal.
This video was particularly enjoyable. Great playing on a great drumkit with a fantastic snaredrum and wonderful cymbals. Very nice 🤗 My favorites were the first one (the Paiste) and the Mel Lewis Istanbul. Can you do a video on the Gretsch signature snares in the future? This Keith Carlock one and the Gergo Borlai snare (that one seems particularly cool)? I think they sound wonderful.
These two were my favorites too, I think I'll buy the Paiste one
Thank god for the end segment, loading all of those into my drum sampler for ambient/live use cheers :)
The Paiste and Instanbul rides win the shoot out for me. I'm surprised I wasn't as enamored by the Zildjian ones.
The Istanbul Signature 24"...oh, my goodness! So beautiful in sound and looks. Just an incredible cymbal.
I have one and I can attest, it’s so worth it.
Very surprised. The Istanbul Agop Special Edition Jazz Ride 21” was the best, and most classic sounding to me. Also, the Paiste Signature Traditionals Light Ride 20” was great. Two cymbal companies that I've never really played before either. A very enjoyable and well done video again by DCP.
Agreed
Have the 21" Istanbul Agop Jazz Special Edition and love it. Also love Istanbul Signatures. All about that brand. Meinl one is really nice but I played one in a really dull finish much like Big Apple one here(maybe it was the same) but it looked more vintage or rough/ seasoned. It's great but almost the same price as Istanbul in which case I'd still pick Agops. Agops have a way of being two cymbals in one. Great ride and crash characteristics!
Good choice! I own the 21" traditional Dark ride. I want a 24" Joey Waroner someday, but I need to start saving. 714$ is nothing to sneeze at!
Probably watched this video like 20 times this past week, I have some favourite, but everytime I look into them on other videos they sound different on each one, it's very interesting how every cymbal is so different
I agree with Hans...the Paiste Signature Traditional Light 20" and also the Istanbul Mel Lewis 22" sounded best to my ear in this particular video. Nice drums and cymbals! Good playing and demo! Thx! For rides in my arsenal: 20 & 22 K Con MTL and 19 Beautiful Baby.
Really liked the K. Con bounce and the big apple dark. Thanks for the comparisons.
Thanks for watching.
As a metalhead -among a lover of all other genres of music, this intro is the quintessential embodiment of the young internet’s acronym of ROFL.
Tom's face after demo'ing the Mel Lewis 22, just says it all... 😄
That was one epic intro.
I love the death metal intro, guys. Funny stuff.
Both the Istanbul Agop Mel Lewis and Signature rides sounded fantastic. 👍
Hadn't considered meinl for a great jazz ride cymbal until now, thanks Tom and the team, really enjoyed the full video.
Despite the lack of UFIP rides that I love, of course I understand they may not be in stock!
The cymbal demo part of the video is nice, but the playing is the best part. Excellent!
this snare drum deserve to have it's own show.
I was hoping to see Istanbul traditional jazz series 20,or 22 featured.ive become a big fan of them recently. For me they do all 3!!! Great bell, ride, and crash.with this series. For someone who doesn't have a lot of money to spend, one of these cover a lot of bases, and sound absolutely beautiful.
Zildjian k series is something else. Wonderful video.
I missed you Tom! My fave demos are you.
I have the 22" Zildjian K Constantinople Overhammered Ride.... and I love it.
I had the chance to play a 22" Istanbul Agop Mel Lewis Ride and it felt and sounded so good. That's my #2.
The 22" Meinl Byzance Big Apple Dark Tradition Light Ride sounds great. That's my #3.
It would also depend on the type of music being played of course.
the byzance jazz line is absolutely outstanding. Also the sand ride, extra dry rides, and the foundry proof rides are great for jazz too.
Own a 24” Agop Sig and 22” Agop SE Jazz Ride (with 3 rivets I installed) Istanbuls are awesome! Gotta get me that Paiste 20” Trad. Light though.. such a musical instrument.
Y'all's editor deserves a raise
why?
Both Paistes and the Zildjian K Cons sounded best to me. But all were inspiring. Thanks for the comparo!
Verry nice !! . I have a paiste 18" crash/ride 302plus , and an aa meinl laser bronze ride 20" . and I am extremely satisfied with it.
Came for the K Con Thin 22” and “left” with that and the (2) Paiste Sig Trad and (3) Paiste Masters Dark crash/ride (that bell!). Send help..
Wow, most of these cymbals sound really good and would blend well in an ensemble jazz setting. For me, the Zildjian Constantinople's have a very musical balance. Some of my friends love cymbals with very complex overtones. I prefer a good, lower pitched ping with a fat lower volume wash without a " hum" or "trash" in the overtones. Thanks for the comparison and again, all of these cymbals are wonderful.
Great Video.
Thank you!!
Thanks for watching!
All of them sound great!
The band at the intro is definitely the best sounding 'Jazz' band I have ever heard.
Hard to beat that 20" K Con Bounce Ride for me. Killer sound
The intro was the best 24 seconds on CZcams thus far
Came here for the comparison. Listened hard. Left with a Paiste 20" Traditionals Light Ride. It arrived a few hours ago and I've been putting it through the paces. It is absolutely EXACTLY what I was looking for.. Some believe that Paiste's are too pure and don't have enough individuality. That's why I keep an arsenal of Z's, S's and M's as well. But as a result, my drummers still always comment on the beautiful P's in the arsenal especially for the lack of overtones. DCNH you are doing us a great service.
Great presentation!! The best ride cymbal comparison that I've ever heard!!
Thanks so much!
Sure wish I could have that exact Istanbul SE 21". I'd buy that right now.
Love them all.
Great comparison, and great drumming! I have to say that the Istanbuls really stand out to me. They all sounded fantastic. The K Con Overhammered ride and the Paiste Sig Traditional also sounded really good.
Thanks a lot!
Majority of them actually make for fantastic crashes
Thank you for this video!!!!!
The Istanbul special edition 21 did it for me.
Great video thanks
So nice!!
Tom that stank face and point at the Mel Lewis was all I needed!
Mel Lewis all day. It sounded like the overtones are sitting well with the body of the cymbal. It just sounds happy. The HHX was too pingy and there was a high pitch whine when crashed. I can’t not hear it in just about every Sabian. The Meinl Jazz Monophonic sounded like it tried too hard. Zildjians are ok. Great comparison video, as always!
For anyone wondering… the intro song is “lie to my face” by Carnifex lol
Funny, I don’t consider myself a Sabian kind of guy, but the brightness and muted wash of the Sabian really catches my ear.
I wish Zildjian would lower the bell profile on the Cons just slightly and hammer the bells. The OH is just a little thin for my taste and the Kerope line just feel like they are missing a little complexity.
Best intro ever!
First one is what I was looking for
Anyone know of a ride cymbal that gets close to Joe Morello's ride from the Take Five record? I know there were a small number of reissues made, but they did not sound close enough to the original for me. Any brand is fine.
All excellent, but the Sabian HHX Complex Thin is the only one I could see dropping that kind of money for. And not a cymbal snob anymore as I use Paiste Sigs, Zildjian A and even a 22" Sabian B8 Pro ping type ride cymbal (got it used, can't make out exact series, but it is killer). Looks like an HHX is in the B8 Pro's future!!
Paste Sig Trad, Istanbul Mel and K Con bounce-- if I had to pick one it probably be the Paste Sig Trad after an hour or so of mulling over the Istanbul Mel
Your awesome thank you
I liked the Istanbuls the best, and the Sabian the least by a pretty wide margin. I love how trashy the Meinl Jazz Monophonic is, but I find trashy rides often have some weird higher overtones, and the Monophonic is no exception. I'm partial to the Agop Signature for a drier, slightly trashy sound, and the Mel Lewis for a more airy, open sound. Somewhat surprised an Istanbul 30th or K Kerope weren't among the choices.
if we are being honest, istanbul really blew the competition out of the water on this one.
Is any of the Tama Star 13x6 snare drums featured in any of your videos? Can't find any demos of them anywhere. Sorry for off topic.
11:58 - Istanbul Agop Signature Ride 24” sounds very good imo
Thanks for sharing...
Funny intro...
I really like that one video where Shane was performing a demo on I forget,, But he actually played OK.
All the Cymbals has its place in Jazz and other styles of music.🎶
K Con Thin Overhammer for the "jazz with a little bit of "A"-sound", and the Byzance Big Apple for the "old earthy plate"-sound with just enough modern in the undertones and bell to make it work beyond it's intended use.
Paiste Master Dark crash ride 22 "and Istanbul Agop Signature 24" would be my choices
nice playing
Snare sounds wonderful! How would you guys rate it compared to the Benny Greb signature brass? I’m between the two!
Killer drum, different animals. The Benny is a 13" so it has a more "compressed" sound while the Carlock is more open and airy.
@@drumcenternh perfect, thanks guys! Keep up the brilliant content :-).
Jazzy! Just beautiful, all of em spectacular! Groove on chaps. Bonjour from Sweet home Alabama, what a beautiful day! 👍🥁👍DC
1st Paiste and the Mel Lewis
I have to agree with a lot of other comments. Those Istanbul rides are just heaven. All the Zildjians were excellent, of course.
All these cymbals work well for Jazz Rides. I can find specific compositions that each would excel at. So I'd probably look at which is most versatile. The 21"Istanbul Jazz Special Edition and the 22" Meinl Byzance Jazz Monophonic are a bit too dry and are probably the least flexible. The 22" Istanbul Mel Lewis Ride was low-pitched, with great definition, the crash projected well, smooth sound quality, the wash was present, but not overpowering, there was some sustain, but not continuous. In essence, it was extremely well balanced for a wide variety Jazz, Fusion, and even some pop. It would work well in sessions and even some Rock. I use two different cymbals for jazz rides; an 18" Zildjian rivet Cymbal, (minus the rivets) (ca.1954-1957), and a 22" Zildjian (ca. 1957-1959). Between them, I can pretty much cover anything in the realm of Jazz.
20 K' Constantinople Bounce, is real nice. 👍
The Mel and the overhammered were may favorites, most impressed with Istanbul overall. That first Meinl was not great though
1. Paiste signature
2.K over hammered
3.Istambul Mel Lewis
All great sounding cymbals
All sound great but Istanbul's sound amazing...
I wish I could have them ALL♥
Well , the Agop Signature sounds amazing !
I d even make it a bit lighter then that to have it even more crashble.. Turkey is at the top for cymbals.. we can all learn from them..
All fine cymbals! But I'm a Zildjian guy. With a few exceptions, they seem to have mastered the balance between stick definition, a usable bell, a pleasant wash, and crashability.
the sabian hhx legacy ozone ride is also fantastic
