  • In Today's episode of Urban Valor, we have Guest Army veteran Chris Cleland. Growing up in El Monte, California, Chris found himself in trouble, leading to an arrest for grand theft auto. But he turned his life around by joining the Army Infantry, a decision that took him on several deployments to Iraq.
You'll get to hear first hand the challenges Chris and his unit faced, especially their encounters with IEDs. He shares his stories from Baghdad, one in particular, where Chris's unit was distributing toys to local children. Tragically, during this act of kindness, an explosive event occurred, resulting in the loss of 27 lives, including many children and Army Specialist Benyahmin Yahudah.
Chris also opens up about the mental health struggles that many veterans face. Including his own experiences and how he's now dedicated to helping other veterans adjust to life after service, discussing the need for support and understanding for those who've served.

Damn bro, they fucked you with that bonus. I got 20k for enlisting 11B in 07 and I got it tax free overseas a year later. Was still to young for 2004. Anyways, big respect man. My old team leader was with 3id on those deployments, he had some intense stories to say the least

The boot camp story reminds me of my cousin. He fought in Iraq from about 2003/2004 (unfortunately he died in Iraq in 2004).
When he was in bootcamp, his regiment where all lined up as they do, the Sergeant or whatever he was shouted at my cousin in line and my cousin was always known for being quiet natured but very funny. My cousin shouted back at him but did the voice of Zed from police academy. Apparently everyone laughed so hard that they couldn't even punish him. Because everyone was laughing.

People don't accept the Army racist humor in combat arms. Its a trust and love thing, I trust that you love me and are my brother so much that I know that you say it with comedic purpose. I also trust that you are not the type of person who can be so affected by words that you would turn me in because you are so weak and lacking of self confidence because of a word, how can anyone rely on you for anything if you can't operate after someone hurted your feelings? I'm not going to combat with anyone who is that sensitive and lacking of gumption, type of person that beats their own child into a coma after they call you stupid or say "no"! We push limits with pain and words to verify self control only to establish trust. Can't fix everything with hugs and hurt spot cream, especially in my Army.

Dude was a motard in bootcamp. He purposely got his platoon smoked regularly because he wanted to be Mr. Highspeed?
