- If you are a fan of samurai and swordsmanship, I’m very sure you know about the famous Mibu Wolves: 新撰組 Shinsengumi. Shinsengumi is super famous and popular in Japan and there are still fan clubs and new movies and dramas about them coming out. They are a group of swordsmen that fought through a turbulent time of Japanese history.
But haven’t you ever wondered before…
Who was actually the strongest swordsman?
So today, I will first briefly explain about the history of Shinsengumi, then introduce the three strongest members of the squad.
I will be counting down the three swordsmen by how skillful they were, so I hope you can enjoy this video till the end. The strongest man might actually not be the person you had in mind....
However before I start, I need to make it very clear that no one actually knows who was really the strongest, it’s all just speculation for fun. If you know about any other theories or studies, please let me know in the comments.

As a big fan of both Gintama and Golden Kamuy, it's really fun to learn about the real life people that their counterparts are based on! It's also cool to see how adaptations or homages to them present their characteristics and relationships, such as Gintama's Sougo also seeing Kondo as an older brother as well as being presented as one of the strongest swordsmen in the series.

@@hilmanshazwan3262 funny cuz shinpachi was based on the first captain of the shinsengumi, also he was originally gonna be in part of the shinsengumi with sougo but they had to add more cast to the yorozuya
Adding to this - and after watching Gintama, it was crazy to learn how many of the shinsengumi killed themselves at such a young age. I'm 28, but a majority of the shinsengumi had already committed suicide by the time they were 23. And watching Gintama again with that knowledge, it makes the anime a whole lot darker.
Fate and Kenshin is how I got to know them., but I was introduced to kenshin first
Japanese history: "The Boshin war was primarily fought with guns and artillery. Japanese pop culture: "Saito Hajime was so unbelievably badass he once killed 5 imperialists using a cigarette.
"There is nothing this gatotsu can't pierce!"

I am surprised. I was introduced to the Shinsengumi by Hakuouki, which obviously isn’t totally historically accurate, but they got a lot of the details right on. Souji Okita and Sanoske Harada were my favourites. Thanks for this video it was really cool and informative!

Hakuoki was my first otoge! I was introduced to Shinsengumi through that game and made young me very interested in the Edo era~
Same here, the first thing I knew about Shinsengumi was Hakuouki, my favourite is Shinpachi.
Funny enough hakuoki was my introduction to the shinsengumi which I didn't know at the time until I started getting in to the fate series
that gintama reference at the end caught me off guard 😂 I like to think that since gintama takes so much inspiration from history, sorachi might be implying that pachi boy’s gonna become freakishly strong in the future

Shinpatchi has gone H.A.M before dispite being the major comic relief but maybe that IS his true power. Never underestimate the bifocals!
Shinpachi, by the end of Gintama, defeated many of the strongest Amanto along with Kagura in 1v1 battles and Gintoki wasn't hesitant is letting him fight. Even though he was the comic relief, his swordfighting skills grew tremendously, which we didn't always see because we were too focused on Gintoki.

The way you promounced "Nagakura Shinpachi" was one of the coolest sounding things I've ever heard.
One of your earlier Shinsengumi videos is the reason I found your channel at all, and I'm delighted every time I see a new video about them from you! They have such a rich and storied history in the incredibly short lifespan of their organization, even setting aside all of the varied fictional depictions of them in Japanese media, and it always made me sad that there's hardly any information about them available to English speakers who may have an interest in learning more. Thanks for bringing more Shinsengumi content to English-speaking audiences!

I always found japanese history incredibly intriguing, to the point I held an entire presentation about the sengoku era when I was still in school. I am trying to read up on the Shinsengumi now with having gotten introduced to them through the Yakuza games and the Fate franchise. Then I stumbled upon your channel and I immediately loved the style of your presentation. From the pictures, to the very clear explanations, it was really fun to watch. Not to mention learning what the one or other word means.

I learned about shinsengumi from Rurouni Kenshin. Since then i searched about the history of meiji restoration. It was bloody but epic

Thank you for your hard work. You are not afraid of telling the truth of Japan as it is. And your history materials are really easy to swallow but detailed enough to spark that interest to study more.
PS: Surprisingly, while listening to you I kind of realized that Gintama anime is really well researched and detailed when it comes to chemistry between characters of Shinsengumi.

Thanks so much for this video. I guessed the rankings correctly, although my heart belongs to Saito, being my second favourite Shinsengumi member. Your Shinsengumi videos are so refreshingly unbiased and informative and it's great to get more information about them. The only book about the Shinsengumi in English that I know of is very biased against them!

I wonder how history could of been different if the U.S. had approached Japan with diplomacy instead of ultimatums during this era.
IIRC they tried but the Shogunate didn't take them seriously until Perry came with the cannons. And if it wasn't the US, it would've been another of the European powers anyways.

Hmmmm, the stories I heard about Uesugi Kenshin and Oda Nobunaga were pretty impressive, but I don't know much about the time of the Shinsengumi aside from the anime I've seen (riveting storyline no less) It would be amazing to actually find a way to measure all the warlords and samurais skill.
I love watching these. It's nice to know some history of the people that Fate/Grand Order characters are based from(like Saito Hajime and Okita Souji).

You know there is another formidable swordsmen in Shinsengumi named Oishi Kuwajiro. He's not the captain of a unit but many refer him as one of the strongest swordsmen within the group. His name is feared among the Imperialist, they called him Hitokiri Kuwajiro aka Kuwajiro The Assassin because he does a lot of assassination tasks including the famous one being the assassination of Ito Kashitaro.
You, my friend, gave the true/correct answer. Kuwajiro all the way.

Fun fact, their Kenjutsu, Tennenrishin-ryu is still taught today and is one of the few styles that train in old school kendo.
tbh i like how larger than life historical figures in Japanese history are depicted in media, always so colorful and fun, even tho i realize they aren't realistic
that's someone from the late Sengoku period (when it down to mainly just Ishida and Tokugawa) that I'd love to hear talked about more since the only real big media he was talked about in was the book and TV Movie (Nioh is so fantasized that I don't count it as more than a cool reference), Shogun, that person being William Adams, also known as Miura Anjin, who was involved in the Battle of Sekigahara and was one of the few foreigners to be given the rank of samurai by Tokugawa Iyeasu. overall he is a really interesting figure

Love the Shinpachi pick. One of the only explanation’s in which elevation of caste was a reason to protect the shogunate. Wonder video as per usual.

Thanks for the video Shogo! It makes sense to say that Okita died from disease. English is not my first language, but these other guys died very old, I think it makes more sense to say that Saito died of natural causes, or old age.

I grew up loving Rurouni Kenshin, so this is super interesting stuff.
I'm a big fan of Shinsengumi and I'm so happy for finally having more content of them in English..! I know a bit of japanese, so many of the materials I had to read really slowly, but other people can't and it's hard to gather all the info.. I first met them in Rurouni Kenshin when I was a child, but only got really passionate after the otome game "Hakuouki". After that, I watched movies, dramas, read books...
I love Gintama too by the way but I think my favorite franchise right now about them is Peacemaker Kurogane. I really love the portrayal of the members there.
Could you please give us recommendations of more books and other media with them, even if it's japanese only? Or give your references?
Also might sound weird, but the drama made me love Heisuke a lot and I wish I could know more about him, but it's hard to find more info.
I just love the mere size of cultural and historical value that literally drips from each and every one of Shogo's video.
By the way, I'd like a video about the various eras in japanese history, making a little summary about the succession of periods.
First of all, congratulations for your channel! It is really amazing. I have a question: do you knowif is there any book about Shinsengumi in English that you recommend? Any translations from Nagakura Shinpachi's books?
I love the way you are introducing us to Japanese culture and can see you try and do that in the best way possible so if I humbly may make a suggestion please replace "strong" with "proficient" when referring to the swordsmen.
The 3 stab would be like a spear but with sword just don't extend all the way until the final thrust, theoretically this spear technique would throw your enemy off if they are using a sword. Kind of like a feint and attack all in one. The spear was the king of the battlefield for a reason.
I don’t think you can carry a spear for urban indoor fight scenes. They are police, not army.
@@tykep1009 have you seen the man catcher polearm the sodegarami that entangled the garments with large hooks and spikes ? also I was talking about a sword thrusting technique that involved 3 thrusts in one action or quick succession.
It's also my opinion that the spear was a far more superior weapon on the battlefield, it took the human race from hiding in caves and in trees to the apex top of the food chain cheap to make and has a sharp pointy end ease of use.

@@madmanthepope6448 its pretty much a fact i guess. japanese mainstay armies, whether ashigaru or samurai also used polearms mainly ranging from bamboo spears to naginatas so yeah. the sword has always been a sidearm/last resort. just happens that the shinsengumi operated in an age and in situations where they carry swords around rather than cumbersome spears i.e. indoors.
same reason why the police of modern day carry pistols around instead of full blown assault rifles and explosives even though wars on foot are fought with the latter rather than sidearms. the shinsengumi was essentially a special department of japanese "police" at the time.
I love the shinsengumi character portrayal in gintama. Amd how the amanto are just westerners... also how some amanto are portrayed is brilliant amd funny.
Fascinating! I try and find as much information about the Shinsengumi as I can. I love that point in Japanese history. The Shinsengumi's dedication in what they believed in was inspirational. It's hard to find information, a least relatively accurate information, about them in English. The one book in english I have made it quite obvious the writer held a resentment for them and it made me a little upset at the language he used about them, often calling them thugs and the like. I have a copy of the book Nagakura-san had written (i believe alongside a reporter), but my Japanese isn't nearly as good yet to properly read it!

All I know about the Shinsengumi comes from Rurouni Kenshin. According to that manga Okita was the strongest, but Saito was also a beast! :P
Surprising how many actual facts were included in the Rurouni Kenshin anime (and the Kyoto storyline)! Including the fact that Okita Soji died of TB. Having kids watch those shows is kinda like giving them a history lesson! 😁
Edit: I wanna know more about the Ikedaya incident. Is that the one where Shinsengumi took out the rebels in an inn who were planning on burning the city? If so, according to the anime version, Saito was a part of it. 🤔

So I believe that when they raided the Ikedaya Inn, the Shinsengumi actually split into two groups, and it's possible that Saito was a part of the group that didn't infiltrate. He was probably a part of the backup group that arrived when the first group with Kondo and Okita finished up. Hijikata was supposedly a part of the backup group too.
I believe that the reason for splitting up was because the Shinsengumi wanted to cover more ground because I think they weren't exactly sure which Inn the rebels were at. That is my understanding at least :D

I've recently tried to understand more about Japanese history at the end of the Edo Period because I play a game called Dead By Daylight and recently bought the "Cursed Legacy" chapter which comes with a character "The Oni" - a vengeful samurai, who lived at the end of the Edo Period and couldn't handle the changes going on in Japan at the time and thus tried to bring honor to his family by eliminating "imposter samurai" - commoners who became wealthy under the changes coming to Japan.
I'm trying to understand his lore and his time better, because I'm simply fascinated with his lore. I'm also a history student and so, I have a general interest in such things. Thank you for teaching me, I'm happy I'm becoming more and more familiar with the subject 🙏🏻🥰
It is Ironic how the Shinsengumi are mostly low ranked samurai and commoners fight to protect a shogunate that forbids low ranking commoners to exceed their ranks and abilities and indirectly try to make sure people stay in their class and ranks while most of them did the direct opposite. Trying to be the samurai warrior while you are not the class would have gotten you executed by the shogunate10 years before they Shinsengumi where formed. It was one of the main reasons for peace after the sengoku jidai all elements of resistance or anyone that give anybody an idea they could become strong like a samurai and fight where simply eliminated and removed from society.
Same thing with who they were fighting. Despite their restore the emperor expel barbarians, the other side basically followed the same policies as the shogunate of strengthening Japan while trying to minimize foreign influence.
@@specialnewb9821 Katsura Kogoro was one of the 3 great nobles who led the restoration not all anti bakufu where affiliated with sonno joi many where in favor of reforming to a western style government.
@@ricardoblikman2676 Certainly, I just find it ironic that they went to all the trouble of removing the shogunate only to have a general continuity of policies out of necessity. Now I am speaking generally. Imo the Meiji reforms went farther and were impemented better, but had Yoshinobu been given a real chance who knows?

Yes i knew about Okita Soji in Rorouni Kenshin. That he had Tuberculosis when fight Against Battousai. It gives me chills whenever I read about Okita san's biography also to Hajime Saito too!

After talking about Shinsengumi, how about a similar group from the era, the Mimawarigumi? And probably the rebels like Kawakami Gensai, Okada Izo and so on.
My favorite character of the shinsengumi is Hijikata Toshizo........as a historical figure and more thanks to Gintama.
