    Army commissioned CJ5 in 78 ? Never happened in any yeay since CJ stands for
    " Civilian Jeep " . Military Used M38A1 Jeeps which werent used in 78 having been replaced years earlier during the Vietnam war by The M151 " Mutt " . Following the Mutt were CUCV Chevrolet 1- 1/4 ton trucks and Blazers . Followed by the Hummer.

    Oh dude speaking from experience the orig. Motor, drivetrain, and power are great on and off-road that you already have there. But I too was not immune from the 4x4 bug. I must of had 5 different off roading mag. subscriptions, and wanted everything I saw, felt a comradery with peoples rides and build stories. So good luck to you I know you will have fun, because you never forget your first.

    The axle ratio is a 3.54 being the standard gear ratio and 4.09 was the optional gear ratio. Hopefully you can get some of the parts and pieces that you need for this swap at a good price. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.

    Heck yeah!!! Great score on the Kubota Diesel!! I know adding up all the things you need can be overwhelming and with youtube fans wanting instant satisfaction on builds , it can make you want to second guess your decision. But there is nothing wrong with a long term build that will get you what you want. I personally think you will get a lot more satisfaction and interest in the kubota build then you would puting a misc V8 , lift and tire on it. But then again I'm bias because I am very interested in this build and a fan of Rust Autoholic Guy who has built a channel around his kubota swap. I will watch every step of the way on your jeep kubota project! Have fun with the jeep the way it is now while you slowly collect parts. I'm excited for this build and hope to do one also! As far as the jeep goes. If you have never changed the gear oil, now would be a great time plus the gear ratio is stamped on the ring gear. Once again HECK YEAH!!! On scoring the Kubota!!

      Duddie, thanks again for the level-headed words of support. That's what I need to hear right now haha. I agree, the kubota swap will be better for the channel content and I think I'll enjoy it being a diesel more than a gasser.

    You might know this calculation, but here it is anyways. MPHx 336/ tire diameter in inches x axle gear ratio = engine RPM. At 60 MPH, you want to be running peak torque of the engine in RPM. That is when you are running the engine at its most load. A few years back, I put a 1.6L VW diesel motor (non turbo) in a 1981 Jeep Cj7. 3.56 rear ends, 30 inch tires, SR4 trans. It worked great but could only go as high as 3rd gear (1.50:1) because motor would lug in 4th. This was my daily driver for 2 years and got over 40 MPG (imp. gal). Kubota is an excellent motor but there is drawbacks. Weight is one. Another one that few ever mention is that turboing a motor, (that wasn't designed for it) and increasing the RPM through a new governor spring (that wasn't designed for it) will have you worrying about exhaust gas temperatures. That can cost catastrophic failures few can afford. Currently I am putting a 1.6L VW (non turbo) in a 1953 army Jeep. With 5.38 rear ends and 33 inch tires, it will be geared perfectly for that engine running at 3287 RPM at 60 MPH. I will still end up putting an overdrive in it so I can split all 4 gears (T98 trans). Of course a turbo or TDI would be better, but I'm doing it, more, for proof of concept. A turbo or TDI would swap in using the same adaptor. If you use the Kubota, or any other smaller motor, you may want to consider using a transmission that has more gear selection then a T150. It makes it a little more drivable. Good luck with your project. Look forward to seeing it.

    You should have a t150 transmission and a Dana 20 transfer case!

  • @CA.papaBear
    @CA.papaBear Před rokem

    I can help with determining what gears you got:
    method 1 (easy and on the spot method): drive the jeep, get it to 3rd gear (1:1) and leave the transfercase in 2H (1:1) and use this formula engine rpm x tire height (inches) / 336 / 1 / speed = axle gear ratio
    method 2 (will take a bit longer and may be confusing) : go on the web, make note of the year, make, model, axle type, transmission, transfercase and search for references.
    method 3 (labour required): take off the diff cover, remove the differential's ring and pinion and divide the tooth count of the ring gear by the pinion gear.

    The V2203 is a great industrial engine. I have a 20kw genset with one powering it. They do have a pretty narrow power band though. What was yours out of? You want to make sure you don't have a constant speed injection pump on it. First question would be what do you want out of it? Since it has a narrow power band and the variable speed engines are designed for 2800 rpm max without changing springs you need more gears. I was looking and it looked like jeep tranny adapter plates where the cheapest. I am not too familiar with the different models of transmissions but I would look for a five speed with overdrive and not too wide of a ratio. I would avoid anything with a really low or granny first unless you want to go rock crawling or anything like that. Your upper gears will have holes that will really strain the engine. Your axle gears will depend on what you want to do with it.

      The 4BT is 782lbs compared to the Kubota's 415lbs, in a CJ-5 that is just too much weight on the front end. Not saying it can't be done, but the amount of modification need would significantly increase budget as well. Also 4BTs are around 2500~3500, at least near me, and I believe @Decent Garage picked up that Kubota for under $1000 as well. A 4BT is better suited in a full size vehicle such as the J1000 or Cherokee Chief.
