The answer for your question is, india is land of diversities hence, in each state people speak different languages. If we have to communicate with people of near by state we use English or we should learn to speak their language. In Kerala we speak Malayalam language, In Tamil Nadu they speak Tamil In Karnataka they speak kannada , in Andhra Pradesh they speak Telugu.......

David ssi the girl is from England India was a British colony 75 years ago...and Indians who can't understand fellow citizen's mother tongue communicate in English.. English acts as Lingua Franca(connection language) and most of the younger generation are good in English( though some are not )since we learn English right from our childhood.Even if you don't know any of the Indian languages if you know English you can survive in India .
