@trinaq Yeah like with Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV in Dune part 2 (described to be in his 70s but is actually 30 years younger) I actually wasn't bothered much by that change because having not read the book, I always assumed the Emperor was supposed to be an older man.

How is Scarlett O'Hara not sitting at #1 on this list? The first line of the novel "Gone with the Wind" is "Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful," yet they cast Vivien Leigh to play the role. She was undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous actresses ever to appear on screen. I don't understand how one of the most famous movie characters of all time doesn't show up anywhere on your list!

You make a good point, rarely mentioned by most people who well know both the book and the movie. (That said, if it were up to me to cast Scarlett from the plethora of screen-tests--with some actresses who, physically, were more like the book’s description--I’d still go with Vivien Leigh. She embodied Scarlett’s fire and passion, a woman who for years was able to harness the attention of Gable’s Rhett Butler. (Until the ending, at least….)

Sissy Spacek as Carrie (she was a chubby plain brunette in the book) both Jack and Wendy in The Shining. Randle McMurtry in One Flew over the cuckoo’s Nest and Vampire Armand in interview with the vampire were both described as having auburn hair as a HUGE part of their identities. Claudia The Vampire was about 5 in the book, even more of an abomination as she was called in the movie. All three witches in the witches of Eastwick were described as plain in the book

To be realistic, a Hollywood movvie would never cast a young-looking seventeen year old boy as Brad Pitt's love interest - too icky - so I don't mind that they went went for someone more age appropriate. @@batgurrlHe was drunk and horny a lot in the books. 😂 But he was a bit more odd looking. He was definitely never as cute as Peter Dinklage.

Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet. Velvet was the “plain” sister. And the horse. The horse they used was a throughbred; the horse in the book was a piebald with no particular breeding; hence his name, “the Pie.” The movie missed the whole point of the book.

My mother doesn't find Kira Knightley attractive. I think she is fine, I'd never call here ugly. I dont find Ryan Gosling attractive and have never been into the Hollywood hunk types, like Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, or George Cloney. Cara Delevingne is striking, but I'd never call her conventionally attractive by 'my' eyes because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Someone who is gorgeous to one could be ugly to another. I've always swayed more towards the 'unique' looking people of the world. The ones who are so strikingly different that they are both ugly and beautiful. The first time I saw Benedict Cumberbatch, I thought he looked like an alien. It's horrible to think, but that's where my mind went. Now I find him gorgeous. He has the ability to draw someone in and to repulse in his charisma. Another unconventionally gorgeous person is Adrian Brody. The same goes with Zachary Quinto. Both he and Benedict could lead me down a dark ally to my doom, especially Zachary 😅😂 But I find things in all people attractive, especially more so with their personalities. I even love 'ugly' animals, patterns, clothes, and the list goes on. It is never ok to bring people down about their appearance, or for most things, for that matter. Built each other up. Let people enjoy what they enjoy as long as it's not hurting you or anyone else.

I suppose the two Tom Cruise Reacher films were fine for those who had not read the books, For those who had, however, the main problem with casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher is that in the books Reacher's intimidating physical presence is so much a part of what makes him Reacher, in terms of both character and plot development. Ok, I agree with everything in this list... Except for the things that were left out.
Just with Shadowhunters you have a whole new list...
    -Of course, Clary
-Jace, whose supposed to be way taller and muscular than Jamie, (even though he nailed that personality)
-Alec is supposed to be also tall and with a really pale skin and black hair (the actor whose name idk, sorry, match the skin and eyes, but the hair and height are disappointing)
-Valentine is described as a muscular, 40ish, manipulative, blonde man, not that person on the movie...
And don't even get me started with that blasphemy of a series 😤...
The point is, that's definitely the one with way more changes than it should have, and yet you named the least terrible...
Now I'm in need for a list only for Shadowhunters, please

    • @byMidnyt

I tried multiple times to read the book, but just couldn't do it. I think they did a better job at casting the series though. At least Dom looks like he'd actually survive a fight as Jace. According to IMDB Jamie is actually an inch taller than Dom at 6', but Dom doesn't look like he'd blow away in a stiff wind. (When the series came out everyone was whining about Dom, and how perfect Jamie was for the role, according to the author's description. I thought, if that's true, then sometimes the authors don't get it right either.) The guy they used for Alec in the movie looked about 35, I swear he looked older than Valentine. They did better with Matthew (hey at least he's 6'3"). They did better with the guy they used for Valentine as well. He looked his age, and def did well on the manipulative part. Lily and Kat are both 5'5" and I think they were equally irritating, so I think that was more of a character problem than an actor problem, but at least they were able to get closer by dying Kat's blonde a strawberry blonde than that deep deep auburn they used on Lily.

I gotta second Morgan Freeman as Red... they even left in the line from the book "maybe it's because I'm Irish" as an Easter egg...
And along those lines, Denzel as Don Pedro in Branagh's Much Ado... Branagh had a major habit of casting really good actors that didn't look like the book and did brilliantly anyway... This is one of the reasons why most authors of these novels hate the screenplays and television shows because of the way Hollywood makes changes to their character works, it doesn't matter how good these actors are, mainly because it's not their fault that directors change the character's looks, and despite how good or great the screenplays and television shows are, it's the author's work that's not being fully recognized or honored in a way the author wants, and unfortunately most of them do end up hating the end result based on their work.

Hugh Jackman has made Wolvie HIS OWN! Im ' aware of the body diff ( as a fan of X-Men), but he sure made it NOT matter one iota!
My idea of a TV character that looked NOTHING WHATSOEVER like the (comic') book portrayal?
Kristen Kruik as Lana Lang on TV'S SMALLVILLE.. Superman in Hight School! in the books , LANA is Always a Tall, Spunky, Redhead, confident and assured, BUT
using a SHORT, Raven-haired half=Chinese actress in that roll ( and them making her a nosy, Whiney, insecure bundle of .. nerves,, TOTALLY un-recognizable, IMHO!
    thanks for the Vid!

Oh well, the differences are there for Claries character in the wall instruments movie, when I first saw the description of this video, my mind immediately turned to Dominic Sherwood, portrayal of Jace in the TV series. The description is a lot different than what they did with his features, and I remember People being slightly annoyed about it as well as a lot of other effects that they put on the TV show different from above.

Will MoJo do a “black washing” of characters since they have a “white washing” category? I think if you have an actor no matter what their skin color, height, and other physical characteristics are, how they portray the character is all that matters. Take for example Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption.

Catriona Balfe as Clare in outlander. Clare in the book was of average height for a woman in 1945 which was 5 ft 3in and when she stood next to Jamie Frazer her head rested on the curve between his chest as he was a good foot taller than her. Catriona is 6ft tall and her height distracted from how tall Jamie was. It was their daughter Brianna that hit close to 6ft tall

Elisabeth Bennett isn't described as ugly, she's just described as less beautiful that Jane (who is very very beautiful). One sentence at the end of the book even say that mary is the only one of the bennett sisters who isn't beautiful. So keira knightley doesn't seem that bad? M.Darcy described a lot her beautiful black eyes, that she has.

Rizzoli and Isles. Given that the television adaptation of the book series is so wildly inaccurate in every way, you would think that mere cosmetic differences could be forgiven. However, Rizzoli is described as a woman who is almost aggressively unattractive with a dour personality who dresses in an unflatteringly masculine style. On screen, she is tall and lovely and impeccably dressed. And Isles? She is referred to as Queen of the Dead, not just because she's medical examiner, but because she is pale with straight, severe black hair, and a terse, no nonsense attitude. In the show she is all smiles and cheer, a round and rosey delight. There is a male cop in the book who is nearing retirement, hugely overweight, and stereotypically Italian. In the show he is a young and handsome black man. I would go into more detail, but I didn't make it through the first show, I was so incensed with what they did to the source material.

You should add 'no blackwashing, no yellow washing, no redwashing'. If a character is supposed to be *not* black (like Cleopatra. She was mostly Greek and Macedonian. She would be olive skinned, not black), do not use a black actor. If the charactor is suppost to be black, use a black actor. Asian? Use an asian actor from the right country. Native American? Use one!

I totally agree. And how cowardly of Ms Mojo not to include the movie everyone is talking about now where ridiculous changes have been made...the "reimagining" of the upcoming Snow White movie is absurd. The book describes her with "skin as white as snow", thus the name Snow White. The book also details the 7 dwarves as little people. How lazy and completely predictable of Disney to cast Rachel Zegler as the lead and only cast one little person as a dwarf. And how lazy and completely predictable for Ms Mojo to make zero mention of it.

The problem is, Hollywood studios won't finance original movies anymore.
So the only way to finance a movie is to hook it to an existing IP, even if it is little resemblence from the franchise itself.
So it is studios not taking risks with original ideas which stops your idea from happening.
