  • Whether it's a €500,000 CT scanner or a product development engineer looking 5 years into the future, Canyon Bicycles are one of the most disruptive bike companies of the moment.
    Earlier this year our Senior Technical Editor, Tom Marvin, headed to their Koblenz headquarters to talk to the people behind the bikes.

    Canyon's direct business model is game changing.
    Bikes are designed in Germany and produced in Taiwan, as expected, but every single bike is shipped to Canyon and CT scanned for quality control. Bikes are pre-assembled and shipped directly to the consumer which lowers the cost. Few other bike manufacturers offer this much value. To keep profits high, Canyon do not offer low end bikes like other companies. Expect to pay $1500 USD for their cheapest (medium-end) AL road bikes. Great video, Bike Radar.

    • @bonzobanana1
      @bonzobanana1 Před 5 lety +5

      Quest composites aren't a top quality carbon frame manufacturer, they are mid level at best possibly low level quality. You need to look at the evidence not just swallow the marketing information. It is well known they use quest composites for their carbon frames but their aluminium frames are made by the best frame manufacturer in the business 'Giant'. Giant, Merida and even Fuji-ta (used by Cannondale and many other brands) are all superior carbon frame manufacturers. Giant has both Taiwanese and mainland China production facilities and both are easily better than Quest Composites however Quest Composites are cheap but then look at the production side. People sitting on basic tables and hair caps not worn properly so contaminants can get into the carbon fibre and resin and create a future failure point in the frame or forks. It amazes me people will watch a paid promotion and happily be manipulated. Canyon have many nice bikes though I must admit but I find it annoying people can be so gullible about marketing.

      Djd Njddk Yes, definitely considering Giant. For $3700 now, (month ago was $3600) u can get full ultegra/disc Propel Advanced with carbon wheels. It’s bit heavy but aero bike, that looks and rides really good. On flat roads bit extra weight doesn’t make that much difference. I’m in a process of building S-Works Tarmac with R8000 group set, by the time I’m done, will cost me around $5-$6k ( depends what wheels I will go with) and that’s not even latest frame from Specialized ( I’m using frame that has been sitting in my attic for 4 years! Special color 🤓). U can go buy fast bike, ready to go for $3.7 and it’s aero bike as well. I’m questioning my wisdom here?...Just really like my fluorescent red paint, Specialized did in that one year. Cheers!

    I don't get use to see that kind of handlebar on CANYON gravel bikes. Is very strange, and it has redundant parts that rise the weight. Anyone knows the prupose of that shape?

    • @peglor
      @peglor Před 5 lety

      The handlebar allows vertical flex between the front of the bike and the rider's hands. It's a lower maintenance alternative to a suspension fork. Given how unreliable and expensive suspension forks have become, it makes a lot of sense. Sadly the bike industry at the moment seem to only make expensive, maintenance hungry, but effectively disposable suspension forks.
      Back in the day Marzocchi used to keep the other manufacturers honest, both in terms of pricing and durability by making forks that would run for years with very little minding. Unfortunately they bankrupted themselves by outsourcing badly to China and the other fork manufacturers have been cranking up their prices while reducing their durability ever since.

    Thank you for sharing this video. I never own a Canyon bike because Canyon marketing is off norm. When there is a sale and not product on my size, there is no option to purchase until product shows available. Before product available, Canyon raised the price back to normal retail price. This is really not cool or good business practice.

    One thing i don't understand in the geometry between men's and women's specific bikes is the standover height. Women have a longer inseam compared to their height, yet have bikes with a lower standover height. Men have much smaller inseam compared to their height yet have higher standover height on their bikes. Doesn't make sense to me.

    Canyon should give timeframes for arrival of out of stock bikes. Having a “Notify Me” feature is useless if you never get an email response. Ribble does this much better.

      I think they are giving timeframes now, thank you for your service!

    The gravel bike is really innovative, but for a brand that call itself "trend setter" the new xc bike Lux with 70° head angle is definitely old. The xc bikes should change like the Enduro bikes, longer reach, shorter stem, slacker head angle, steeper seat tube angle.

    Then we ask why it's so expensive... well, now we know it's no expensive but a just price for the work behind.

      Manufacturing products is not expensive. The research is. Same in the housing market (in the US at least). How do developers and architects build a brand new house with 5 bathrooms and 6.5 bathrooms for less than 900.000 USD and put it on market and sell it for 1.8mil. Same concept.

      @@adamf.8564 sorry to disagree, but manufacturing IS expensive specially if you are taking all your parts from Asia and assembling them in Germany, big wage difference and quality control oversight. Kudos!

    5:35 - I thought Canyon frames were built in Germany?

  • @hikarupio
    @hikarupio Před 5 lety

    Where those frames made in? China? Taiwan?

    • @bonzobanana1
      @bonzobanana1 Před 5 lety

      Quest composites who make the carbon frames are fully mainland China based. Giant have facilities in both Taiwan (top end stuff) and China (mainstream stuff) but honestly don't know where Canyon's aluminium frames are made it could be either of those factories. Suspect its mainland China but nothing to back that up.

    The trouble with Canyon is that unlike the big boys, their warranty is limited to 6 years. The mainplayers offer lifetime warranties.
    I ordered a bike from them once but cancelled immediately after reading their smallprint.

    that's all well and good, but what about the 90%+of their production that is assembled in the far east? Do they get the same levels of quality?
