How I RUINED My GT-R In 4 Easy Steps!! *BIG MISTAKE*

  • Lesson Learned... My Nissan GT-R wasn't doing too well after this decision :( It really was ruined! So after driving two weeks on the Falken Azenis FK510 tires with my 600 WHP Nissan GT-R, I slowly realized they were absolutely horrible for performance! On the plus side, the ride was super smooth and quiet.
Handling in the car was completely ruined. High speeds the car was super unstable and floaty. It felt like the tires were made of balloons. Steering was incredibly vague too! The steering response was delayed and just made it so hard to take any tight turns. When hitting the brakes hard in a turn, the car would understeer and oversteer at the same time! It was scary to be honest! I had no faith in taking this car on any type of track or mountain road. I'd definitely die taking the car on a track.
I was blown away with how bad the performance was. This really shocked me. I talked with so many GTR owners and it looks like a ton of people run oversized tires on the GTR. Even 335's on the rear and 285's up front. So I'm not sure if it was the wider tires or just the brand. But the Michelin Pilot 4S tires are a night and day difference. I went with the OEM sizes just to play it safe. And since these were $1,500, I didn't want to spend more lol. The handling is back in the car and it actually has performance once again!
I can't believe how tires can completely make or break the handling characteristics in a car. It really is obvious since they literally connect the car to the road. But this was a learning experience for sure! In the 9 years I've had my license, I've never needed to replace tires on my cars. So there is a first for everything.
I have received my refund from Tire Rack. So everything went well with the return of the Falken tires to go with the Michelin tires.
Never try and save money on tires. Just stick with the absolute best performance brands out there if you have a high performance car. If you do have a 'normal' car, these Falkens would actually be great since they were comfortable. But they sucked for high performance.
Hopefully we all learned something in todays video! :)
Check out STR Automotive for you vehicle maintenance needs! They took great care of my car!

Hi, I tested a lot of tyres on my GTR, think that the best are the original sized tyres from DUNLOP run flat with hard boarding. If you do high speed (over 200 km/h the DUNLOP semislicks are the best for stability and precision in high speed. What do think? In winter the Michelin Pilot Alpin are best

I agree with your experience with the Azenis FK150. I have them on my Q50 RS but only on the rear and paired with Conti's ECS in front. I wanted to reduce understeer of the car and this combo works well for me. I must say though that it took 1k miles before the Fk150 settled in. They aren't as spot on as PS4Ss though and I sometimes find myself making corrections on certain corners and hard braking since the rears are more eager to step out than they were on PS4S.

I know you said other GT-R owners were running up to 335 on the stock wheel but perhaps it wasn't fully captured that it does result in a lot of tire flex.

I was running with a set of Dunlop Sport Maxx R/T in my 2016 sti and it was great ! I had a great response, the weight of the steering felt good. I was able to push it in some back roads, no problem.
Then a week ago I had a flat tire and I took my car to the dealer I bought it and they gave me another set of tires ‘cuz of the type of the warranty I had.
The set of tires had to be under 100.000 jpy( around 940-950 usd, and yes I live in Japan ) so a couple of days later they got me the same one you’re riding : Falken AZENIS FK510 245/40R18.
The moment I started the car and did some cruising I noticed the steering was lighter, I played with the steering in a straight line and it didn’t feel right. I drove the car on the same back roads I usually take to have some fun and I couldn’t feel like I could push it at the same speed that would always do.
So far I had it for a week but for a daily driver I think it should be fine. Wet braking felt ok too.

Because for my 370Z, I had Federal 595 RS RR summer tires on and they felt very rigid, very grippy, very stable at high speeds, and the steering response was instant. Then eventually I swapped them with Hankook Ventus V12 evo all season high performance tires and it made a dramatic downfall. I got schooled on this early on in my ownership from highly experienced GT-R owners before making a mistake. 285 squared is what I use. The handling was absolutely gone with these tires. And the drivability was so compromised I didn't feel safe going on the highway making lane changes. So the GTR was absolutely ruined for its purpose of fun high performance driving.
