This Cistercian monastery was founded c. 1200 by William, Earl Marshal on lands held through his marriage to the Irish heiress, Isabella de Clare. This abbey, founded as a daughter-house of Tintern Major in Wales is often referred to as Tintern de Voto.
The nave, chancel, tower, chapel and cloister still stand. In the 16th century the old abbey was granted to the Colclough family and soon after the church was partly converted into living quarters and further adapted over the centuries. The Colcloughs occupied the abbey from the sixteenth century until the mid-twentieth.
The Abbey - which is today in ruins, some of which have been restored - was founded in c.1200 by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, as the result of a vow he had made when his boat was caught in a storm nearby. While the specific date of foundation is unconfirmed in some sources, in a 1917 analysis for the Royal Irish Academy, church historian J. H. Bernard suggests a foundation date of 3 December 1200.
Once established, the abbey was colonised by monks from the Cistercian abbey at Tintern in Monmouthshire, Wales, of which Marshal was also patron. To distinguish the two, the mother house in Wales was sometimes known as "Tintern Major" and the abbey in Ireland as "Tintern de Voto" (Tintern of the vow).
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the abbey and its grounds were granted to firstly to Sir James Croft, and then in 1575 to Anthony Colclough of Staffordshire, a soldier of Henry VIII. His descendants became the Colclough Baronets. The final member of the Colclough family to reside at Tintern was Lucey Marie Biddulph Colclough who donated the abbey to the Irish state.
Between 1982 and 2007, the National Monuments service of the Office of Public Works undertook a number of excavation and heritage development efforts at the abbey, including special conservation measures for local bat colonies.Additional works were undertaken after a fire in the site's visitor centre in 2012, which damaged part of the 19th century outbuildings on the abbey's grounds.

This is really set in beautiful settings Sue.The Church and the Graveyard were kept in beautiful condition too, some good old headstones too.I should imagine some of the smaller stones could be older than those. The Knights memorial was really well carved and detailed. There may even have been a tomb under it at some time and it was moved .I am surprised there was so much of the Priory left standing, most have been badly damaged during the reformation. It’s just beautifully set in the trees isn’t it?Lovely day for you too.!we have just had white skies, even when it’s been at the hottest in the Midlands..But cooler last two days with a bit of rain.Thank goodness. Thanks for what you do I miss not being able to walk much and go places and your my legs..Love n Light 🥰
Thanks Christine, this place is full of history, a Knight, Isabella de Clare, monks its absolutely amazing
Absolutely loved the history, the grounds tour and graveyard. The knight 's grave was so fascinating!
Hi Cheryl, yes it's amazing we are so lucky in Ireland with such amazing history, I'd rather spend the day here learning, than any history class 😀 ❤️
Beautiful setting, lovely place to walk. It takes you back in time, I can see Isabelle standing by the stream listening to the sounds of birds, maybe the smell of a fireplace somewhere lingers in the early morning air. So peaceful.
True Sandra, it's a gorgeous place, so much history ❤️
Had me captivated from start to finish. A beautiful place and the carvings were amazing . Were the old graves holding people who came across the bridge with horse and buggy . Thank you so much serenity Sue this place is truly magical, full of history and with easy access for the disabled and those in a pram. Absolutely loved it x

I’ve always been interested in Templars and it’s amazing this place is linked to William Marshal. Great video ! (I’m from Malaysia)
It's so historical, wish I could have gone further into the history but it's easily sought from Google, its so nice to be able to bring you all in to see such history
Such beauty....i so love how the age of graves and church remains are still standing. The culture and just everything is so breathtaking about Ireland. The love of family conflicts wars famine each time you take us along and what i see with you the stories always amaze me more. My ancestors are from Scotland and cherokee here in the USA. I did trace a Lauklin McElyea who came down from Scotland through Ireland and eventually made it to the states.Much appreciation for all you do for us dear Sue.❤😊

Five star production Sue_ Great video quality and color. 👍✌
Thanks Richard, Ireland on a summer day is probably on of the nicest and the most historical places
William Marshall and Isabel de Clare are my grandparents. Isabel, her mother Aoife MacMurrough and one of Isabel's daughters are buried at Tintern Abbey. Isabel's father was Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare, better known as "Strongbow". William was instrumental in the writing and enforcement of Magna Carta and was Regent of England during King Henry III minority. Marshall fought and won, the Battle of Lincoln, his last battle when he was in his 70's. He was the only man to ever unhorse Richard the Lionheart. Richard was reported to have said, God's legs Marshall, don't kill me!" William replied, "Let the devil kill you, for I will not!" and drove his lance into Richards horse instead. At the time William was guarding King Henry's escape from his son, Richard.
How amazing, I also visited New Ross, the town they founded, where isabels heart is thought to have been buried, I gave some history about them there, you have some very cool history in your Family
They can't be your "grandparents", as they lived nearly a thousand years ago, but they would have to be your great, great, great, great, great.....fill in the rest of the greats, because there are a lot of greats after all that time. Lol
But I think that's fascinating, especially because both of them were so noble and godly, and from the reports of those around him, as Marshall was dying, he showed such concern for everyone attending him, including his servants, and he showed so much courage, peace, and faith as well, while facing his own mortality.
You should be so proud of having them as your ancestors, as they were absolutely amazing people. 🙂
@@janicem9225 Just for you 59th g-grandparents, lol! William also took his Knights Templar vows on his death bed
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes, I just found your New Ross video! How I would dearly love to explore these places as you have done!

@@SerenitySueGraveyards I really enjoyed it ♥️
Thanks Marie, I've often brought the kids here for picnics, why not share it with you all too, beautiful spot
For a minute I thought you had been to visit Tintern Abbey near Chepstow in Wales, not too far from me, so was fascinated to find that there is another Tintern Abbey in Ireland. Looks lovely there too. Would love to visit some day.
Hey Catherine, this is sometimes said to be the little sister of Tintern in Wales, how cool
What a beautiful cemetery and ruins. The abbey is beautiful.
Yes, Randy it's absolutely beautiful 😍
What a beautiful place and it's so well looked after
It's gorgeous for sure
Thanks for your interesting and beautiful video . I was most confused at first though as I have loved seeing Tintern , in the Wye valley Wales , all my life and did not realise another Tintern existed ! I thought everything would come clear if I watched the film , but I was most surprised to find out about another Tintern entirely in Ireland ! Brilliant discovery .
Not very far away from the Tintern in Wye valley is a sizable Welsh lake called Llangorse , a natural glacial moraine lake , in the Black mountain area and roughly between Abergavenny and Brecon . The church at Llangorse village has Ogham script carved into the stone building corners . Ogham was used in Irish and Welsh Celtic and consisted of varying lengths of lines instead of letters . My point though , before I digress further is that there are links to powerful Irish families in this part of Wales . For instance Brecon gets it's name from king Brychan , who ruled Brecknock (Brycheiniog) or Breconshire , roughly modern day Powys . The name Brychan might have come from the Irish name Broccán . King Brychan was born in Ireland and his father was Prince Anlach .
Also there is crannog , an artificial island , at Llangorse lake . I believe this crannog is the only example in Wales . There are several in Scotland but none in England . Crannogs are an Irish 'invention' , where there are many examples .
Yes Tintern abbey in Wexford is a smaller sister of the bigger Tintern in Walse, I visited walse last year and have a few videos on my channel, I've also found an Ogham stone in Ireland. I always feel like Ireland and Walse are so similar too
Another wonderful video, we enjoy them and you so much. A question if I may. The headstones that list several names with north and death dates, are all those people buried there also? Thanks for your time. Sheila. Georgia USA.
Hi Steve, yes in Ireland we still have this even now, there are no liners in our graves so straight into the ground, I've my own family members buried like this, one on top of the other, or side by side x
Hello Sue another great video I really enjoyed this one the setting is just beautiful I can see why you used to go there for walks . I did get to watch Philomeana I found it online great film thanks for the heads up. Take care .
Thanks shaun I watched the film you suggested so my next will be philomena just haven't got around to it..this is a beautiful place for sure, all free to walk around which in these times is an added bonus for sure,
Woodcote Shropshire, as mentioned on the Knight’s stone, is about 30 miles from me. That was really interesting Sue
Wow, that's pretty interesting for sure
Awesome stuff!
Thanks so much ❤️
Your videos are amazing! I used to travel around also, checking out all the cemeteries I could. Having empathy and a sensitivity for the lives that were lived……..If possible could you give more histories on the churches, etc. Why are so many abandoned? Who takes care of the many cemeteries? Are there historic societies involved?…So sorry for the many questions. Kind of got carried away.
Anyway, thanks for the lovely and informative walks.
God bless you too!
Thank you Maryann, I'm not 100% sure why they become ruins some of it was war and they were restored by our historical society, others I think got like this as communities became larger, most of our old cemeteries are forgotten, maybe volunteer's will go in clear, record and then they are left..its crazy the amount of Places we find that you can barely walk around, sad really x x
God bless to you sue and GV,pleasent dreams stay safe and well, great walk as usual nite from ballarat in Oz,😴😴🙏🙏🇦🇺
Thanks Peter, such a beautiful place full of history
Always enjoy your vlogs sue😊
Thank you 😊
Very well done Sue.. we’ve been there last year and enjoyed the place ❤
Its beautiful there, did you do the hook lighthouse too? It's very near here
@@SerenitySueGraveyards We’ve been to Hook head yes.. Cheers! :)
Beautiful walking path.
It's such a beautiful place
Thank you so much for this beautiful video! I admire that you are always respectful when you are in cemeteries and churches. Have you thought about making a map of the places you visit with information on how to get there and what to see? I bet many viewers such as myself would use this information when in the area. You could even offer this information as merch to support more videos.
Thank you so much!
What A fabulous cemetery!
It is, so much history
This was AWESOME! Love these old places. But I wish we could have seen it back in its time. Time travel anyone?
Lol Brenda, I'd love to go back in time

😂nice squeaky gate❤
I believe that one would wake the dead lol.
Some of the oldest art preserved in stone so beautiful. The work of the stone cutters always fascinate me.
That one flat stone from 1600s 😮 those ruins has been there that long? Wow!
There's a few sir knights in my line can't remember their names or places of burial. So neat to see these old tombs of knights.
Oh this place is gorgeous!
What was that? 😳 an outdoor toilet? Or was that a wooden tomb 😅... At 26:00...
☕😌 feel fulfilled for the morning been on my grave walk in Ireland with my favorite Irish people . enjoy your videos sue and GV. God Bless you both 🤗
Thanks so much, it was a toilet lol
@@SerenitySueGraveyards ok that's what I thought lol 😅 was a bit unsure.
@lightningjac5640 anything is possible 😅
What a nice location, so much history. Btw the reverends name on the first tombstone is Josiah not Joshua. Greetings from Germany and thanks for your exzellent work.
My apologies Thomas, I didn't have my glasses on, I don't see very well and I've to choose between glasses or sunglasses yes this is beautiful here x
Bello y tranquilo lugar.
Thanks x x
I wish I could build in such a beautiful area.
My dream is to own an abandoned church turn it into my home, I don't mind a graveyard, I'd happily look after all the graves x
William Marshall, my favorite knight and not a bad guy xx
Pretty cool stuff, to think he lived here
@@SerenitySueGraveyards yes he was a kingmaker of his time . xxx
Thank you, so much! This video means a lot to me! I didn't know that the Marshal & Isabel had live in Tintern! I was once in St. Briavels Castle, but never in Tintern Abbey! That was the Marshal's as well! Charming & spooky, little castle! 👍😃
Actually, I'm a colector of castles, medieval history, you name it, just for inspiring myself trying to write a novel of the period, but don't mind to share. Is it all right, if I add some of your videos to my list, please? 😃
Yes of course it is, now if interested check out my video I put up recently, A knights tale, this is where isabels heart is meant to have been buried, the church has some amazing history x
Hi Sue, these grounds are beautiful, and in good condition. Is there any
fish in that river? You are very fortunate to live in a country so
rich in history. Thank you, for
another great walking tour.
Take care.
I am blessed Michael, I'm sure it has fish not sure though I think this comes in from the sea or joins in somewhere
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Thank you very much for getting back to me.
The reason I was asking about fish
being in the river, is that I am a bit
of a fisherman myself. I get out when I can, so I asked my question out of curiosity. Thank you again, for
a great video. Take care.
I saw ur and other people's cemetery vedios this church is the oldest church see this old English.intresting i wish i will be there.and see one by one grave.
This is Ireland we have so many very old ones here x
@@SerenitySueGraveyards beautiful cemeteries.

Sue, do you have an idea of how old the small rustic crosses gravestones are? Cee💚💚💚☘☘☘
I don't cee they usury don't have any inscriptions on them x
Ruins - we don’t really have that concept in the USA…
We are blessed in Ireland for sure Andrew
The knight actually served from Henry VIII through part of the reign of Elizabeth I?
Wow!
That sounds like William Marshall, and his long serving of multiple Kings in the same family before HIS death.
Thanks Janice x
So many die at a relatively early age then out of the blue an older one appears, life must of been a lot harder way back then .young people today reckon they got it hard !
Oh Paul, our young have no idea, I suppose my younger days I felt the same too, it's a fantastic place, hard lives for sure lots of diseases too x
