Thanks for this video Niall, needed it at this time of year as I have just turned one of my grandad's strawberry plants into 12 by potting on the runners. He past away a few years ago so I'm so happy that I get to continue on his plants and the exact variety he used to grow ☺️
Ah brilliant! I did the same with my grandparents’ strawberries last year! That’s so nice to be able to multiply the plants when they have provenance or sentimental value. Sorry that you lost your grandad, but really nice to have such a nice ongoing memory ☺️

Ive been doing some of mine too Naill. I also bought a couple new plants in garden centre with the deep pink flowers, ive want this one for ages. It had the added bonus of 6 baby runners. So i was super happy.
Also bought a lot of flowering dahlias and pepper plants reduced. With some hanging baskets. Mostly £1 each. Happy days. Wanted the flowers from the hanging baskets to put in my tubs. Was the cheapest way to get the plants.
That's such a win when you get a plant from the garden centre and it's got runners on it! Brilliant! And I like the sound of the deep pink flowers... very cool!
You're like me - you love a bargain when it comes to plants! And doubtless the plants are still perfectly good!
At Blue Eye Maple Syrup and Strawberries I used Plastic Fork to hold down the runner in the pots!!

Hi Niall i grew from runners this year and all so grew from seed , i had a big crop , it is now winter here so i can,t wait for spring to taste them fresh from my garden

Great video as usual Niall. I bought 3 strawberry plants for 3 euros a few years ago , and quickly had more than 60 plants doing this . I do need to do it again this year . Strawberries are just the best .... to eat , of course and to make in to the most delicious wine. BTW hope you do plug plants videos again .
Thanks Annie! I’ll never get bored of how fun strawberry runners are - just like you, I started with 4 from my grandparents, and a few runners that poked through the fence from our neighbours! 😂 I’m definitely looking at restarting the Plug Plants episodes 😃
I just got a planter half off, I couldn't resist. I have to plant some strawberries in a container, because my ducks like to eat them. I found that my winter strawberries taste the best. They struggle a lot in our extremely hot summers.

If you put the runners in the original bed how long do you leave it to cut it away from the main plant. Thanks for a good video.
Glad you enjoyed the video Wayne! The main thing is for you to get a sense that the new baby plant is growing of it's own accord. You'll see it starting to develop, and you can even VERY gently give it a little tug to see if the roots have anchored it down into the soil. Then you can snip off the baby from the main plant. Hope this helps!
Hi! Can you plant the runners direct in a bed, or do you recommend planting them in small pots first?
Thanks for a fab video, I have lots of runners from last summer in little pots (maybe far too many!) and have set out a bed at the allotment for these but I can’t find much info on when the best time is to plant the new plants into the bed, they’ve been in their pots all winter and hoping that they are able to go in soon?? I’m based in the UK.

@@niallgardens it sure is cool, i should have done for this season but never got round to it. I always say buying a strawberry plant is a investment really. I have a few hybrid ones,pinestrawberry( pineapple), and a rasp strawberry they are so weird looking,( raspberry). Taste good, bought in a garden centre. All good here,on adventure holidays,hope all good with ye.

How large is your acreage?
So nice of you, glad you enjoyed it! ☺️ I can definitely recommend giving it a go - it means you only have to buy (or be given!) a few plants at the start and within a year or two you can have a huge stock!
Our garden is approx. 1 acre so I've got loads of room to do things!

I actually just picked up a tiny bale of straw for rabbit bedding at the pet shop and used that - it was affordable and just the right quantity!
Are there any varieties you would recommend for zone 4a, looking for an everbearing cultivar. Enjoyed video.
Oh! I need to be honest and say I'm not sure - that's a very different zone to what I've known my whole life and I'd be wary of making a bad suggestion!
@@niallgardens No worries. Most strawberries seem to grow here in North Dakota but being new to the area I'm always looking for free advice. Believe it or not this is not an area of the country where there seems to be a lot of home gardening going on from what I hear.

Once they have a good root system developed then you can cut them free and plant them out 👍

I think so! I think it could work fine. The only potential risk I can see would be weed seeds germinating in amongst the mulch. Otherwise, go for it!
Hi, i have several questions, after i plant my runners can I keep them in the small container till next spring? During winter should I keep them outside or inside? How much sun and water do they need?
Hi! You certainly can keep them in the containers, just don't let them dry out. I personally keep mine under cover during the winter, though equally the cold of winter won't kill them so you can do either. I prefer keeping them under cover just to get the better growing conditions. I would aim to always keep the compost moist so that they don't end up drying out and they'll definitely thank you for lots of sun! Hope this helps!
how long does it take to root tho
I have a lot of runners in small pots ready to cut away from the mother plant. Can these runner plants be planted into their own raised bed now? It's august 19, 2022, the new bed is available. thanks. growing zone 6a
Yes, absolutely! Once they have their own root systems and are starting to grow I think they'll be fine to plant out. Let me know how you get on! 👍
You have a nice garden of 🍓 my strawberry plant doesn't produce flowers
I would say give it time and as the plant settles and matures it should start flowering
What is TLC?
Nill, I must do this to expand my crop. However, I got a good crop of strawberries from my plants at the start this year. After that fruits were constantly being eaten by something. It wasn't slugs as I set beer traps and they weren't touched. Not birds either as bed is covered in a netting frame. Someone said it could be a mouse...do mice eat strawberries?
Everyone and everything eats strawberries.

Hi Theresa, I’d tend to be thinking along the lines of mice. They can also squeeze through the tiniest of gaps! Saying that strawberries are so appealing that almost anything will have a nibble given half the chance!
