      Definitely one of the more orderly and easy to digest explanations I've seen of this. Some teachers tend to overcomplicate it to no end. This was good. Thanks! Looking forward to the next installment as my application of it all leaves something be desired. I hope you'll go further into how the chord choices form the basis of the modes. When it goes beyond ionian and aeolian I'm still a bit confused with how to approach that when making a progression.

    When I was a kid, there was no internet, I taught myself guitar. My bible was an old, skinny, coverless book called The Rudiments of Music.
    On the very last page was an example of modal scales. Nothing on how to apply them. Oh what fun I had.
    Thanks for the video Rob.

    Been playing over a decade mindlessly, almost no theory at all, knew only 2 scales. Started learning the basic pentatonic scales, and then added one scale that i always loved (D major starting on 12th fret), and that made me realize how everything connects and made things so much easier to understand, and made me really excited about finally understanding why some things work and some dont. This video also helped a bit, however a lot of things were definitely flew over my head. I guess i need more basics until i can fully appreciate these lessons

    Agreed, self-teaching is challenging!! I started to learn last November during the lockdown, good a time as any right! watched a bunch of videos, of yours and others, and went off to Andertons to buy the Ibanez I had decided on. Couldn't play a note, nothing, but full of major determination. Fast forward to now, I can play dozens of chords, barre, open, etc, all 5 pentatonic scales, 5 major scales, happily connected all over the fretboard, can jam away with backing tracks, sounds alright actually!! However!!! ......with no teacher I am missing bits, probably loads of bad habits, if someone asks me to play a tune they know, I don't have a clue!! lol. This and other videos of yours really really help!! you have a tremendous eloquent way of getting the points across, imo, many thanks dude, much appreciated :):)

    I know it's a HUGE time commitment and you're a busy man, but I would LOVE to see a series of videos where you use each last mode and create some sort song (doesn't have to be a full thing). Would be a great teaching opportunity, AND a cool challenge for yourself! Maybe you can look at it as trying to write an EP, aiming to make the music feel connected all while using the 7 modes of the major scale!
    Just a thought, it'd be incredible! Thanks for entertaining and educating me through the years! I'm glad to see a stronger Chapman presence on CZcams.

      Being a great teacher is a totally different talent than being a great musician. Which alot of musicians don't have the patience for it and some people really just don't like helping others or want to see others do well. I have all these posters on my wall with this stuff but I don't study it like I should so this is definitely a lesson the self taught musician in me needed to see so Danke

This is why learning theory is like learning Greek! Greetings from Scotland anywho ... I hope my question doesn’t make me sound as thick as I feel! Long time fan.

    • @RichardPhillipsDJ
      @RichardPhillipsDJ Před 3 lety

      Hi Tony, a Ninth is basically a Second (not flattened) but played an octave higher up; it should be the highest note in the chord. (It will sound very different from adding a Second into the chord, which would sound nastier, recommend you try that anyway so you can hear the difference...) Happy playing!

  • @Kwert
    @Kwert Před 3 lety

    The only thing I will say that might be confusing about this lesson to a beginner is that you explain harmonizing a major scale but then teach parallel modes (everything originating from the same root) instead of starting with derivative modes (everything originating from a subsequent scale degree)
    Arguably it is more useful in the long run (on the guitar) to understand parallel modes, but if the basis of this lesson is the major scale followed by harmonizing the major scale, I think the logical next step would be to start with derivative modes to show how the chords formed from each scale degree can correspond to a particular mode (and also just understanding where modes actually come from) and then follow with parallel to help people understand how these modes are formed intervalically.

    • @RobChappers
      @RobChappers  Před 3 lety

      Application of the modes comes in a following video. I find it easier for students to visualise the parallel method at the offset, but I appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching :-)

  • @eugenesis8188
    @eugenesis8188 Před 3 lety

    I'm not about to watch this, but I'm gonna explain how I learned the modes.
    I learned a ton of metal, mainly melodeath, by ear. I realized they were all using the same fretting but different tunings. Come to find out, they almost all just play in e minor. Transpose that to whatever the 'E' string is tuned to.
    So I unwittingly learned the minor scale by heart in high school.
    Then I just learned all the finger positions of that, and that is the modes. Open e root note? Minor scale. F#, second fret root note? That's another mode of f#. Third fret, g, root note? That's another mode of g. Etc...
    Idk which mode is which, but I know them all, completely by accident.
    I've then just practiced not thinking by what fret I'm playing, but what the spaces between notes are. I'm still not as proficient as a jazz guy, by far, or even just someone who memorized this crap. But if someone says this is is f# Dorian, I can ask what the relative minor is and be fine.
    As Skwisgar said, I have music dyslexkia. Written theory makes me want to go get a degree in physics and actually get paid for the work. Let's jam.

    • @eugenesis8188
      @eugenesis8188 Před 3 lety

      Oh yeah, I also learned harmonic minor, Hungarian minor and a few other lesser used scales to spice things up. I'm just trying to help out the bedroom metal guys who don't need a jazz degree to shred.
      The double harmonic major is my favorite I've been working on. I plan to write something dreary with that once I can improvise with it.
