In my review of the iPhone 14, I said that out of the whole iPhone lineup, it is the least exciting new iPhone. And this is largely due to the fact that compared to last year’s iPhone 13, which Apple still sells, and now for less, the iPhone 14 adds just a few upgrades. But are these upgrades enough reason to buy the iPhone 14 or are you better of buying last year’s iPhone 13 and saving some cash? To answer this, we’ll look at the differences and crucially the similarities between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13, to find out which is the better buy! Price comparison. Apple sell iPhone 14, 128 GB for $799. Apple also still sell iPhone 13, 128 GB for $699. $100 price difference. Compared to the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 adds: Camera upgrades: larger 12mp sensor and F1.5 aperture, improvements in low light thanks to the new Photonic engine. But are photos hugely different from iPhone 14 compared to the 13? Not really. Differences are mostly only visible in low light, where iPhone 14 gets brighter and retains detail better and taking long exposure photos is faster on iPhone 14. Where the difference is more apparent is video, where the iPhone 14 has Action mode for even better stabilisation in video. The iPhone 14 also adds two big safety features. 1. Crash detection (same from Apple Watch). 2. Emergency SOS via satellite. Depending on your lifestyle, emergency SOS via satellite may be enough reason to get the 14. iPhone 14 adds a slight improvement in processor. Both have the A15 Bionic chip, unlike the 14 Pros which have the even better A16, but compared to the 13’s A15, the 14’s A15 gets one extra GPU core, going from 4 to 5. Do I notice a difference? Nope. I’m sure specific benchmarks and tasks will show this, but in day to day use, both phones run smooth and fluid as you would expect from an iPhone. More important than the differences between the 14 and 13 are what these phones have in common. From a design perspective the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 are basically the same. Same squared off design, matte aluminium frame, glass back, battery life and 6.1” Super Retina XDR display. These phones have far more similarities than they do differences. If you are picking between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13, I would say go for the iPhone 13 and save $100. The iPhone 13 offers much of the best of what the iPhone 14 has to offer, display, battery, almost identical performance and similar camera system. Only tow reasons I would suggest going for the 14 series. 1. If you need emergency SOS via satellite. 2. If you want a bigger display, in which case the iPhone 14 Plus, for $100 more, with its bigger 6.7” display and almost 2 days battery life, is a phone I can highly recommend. But as for the regular iPhone 14, it’s a phone that is hard to recommend when the last generation is still so good and now at a lower price. I hope this pushes Apple to do more with the upcoming iPhone 15 and in the meantime, save the cash and for the 13!

My favorite feature of the iPhone has got to be face id. When I'm working on something like an engine and my fingers get greasy it's nice to be able to unlock my phone without getting it greasy too.
I could maybe see the safety features being useful if you live in a more rural area with less reception. But otherwise the 13 is definitely the way to go since you’re getting basically the same phone for considerably less, especially if you can find a deal for a nice used/refurbished one.

Was eyeing the 13 for quite some time then an opportunity came as the 14 is on sale for $701. As a first time iPhone user this deal couldn’t make me happier since I think I’m technically using a lite version of 13 pro with it having the same processor, 6gb of ram, and same main camera module.
Those extra $2 are definitely worth it
But I think if you’re comfortable with secondhand iPhones, you will save more by getting 13 or even 13 Pro

Totally agree that these are extremely similar to a point that the 14 doesnt worth the extra cash compared to the 13. The only real good point to go for the 14 is the cheaper and easier to replace back glass but that comes with the toll of compromising the water resistance way earlier due to the adhesive in two panels instead of one as is with the 13.

If I was gonna pick a phone I’d like to have and I was in a good mood. It would be the cyber punk limited edition phone. Merely based off the look and limited factor. I also wouldn’t mind a McLaren edition. I like limited edition phones. iPhones are common and boring.

They could move one camera sideways and everyone will buy it because when your outside people are gonna know you don’t have the new one. Unless you look at the side in the US for the lack of a SIM card tray, you can’t tell the difference unless you look inside of the software and find a iPhone 14/14+ wallpaper.

Point is, if you buy these phones at full price there is a 50 euro/dollars difference and the 14 wins. But that's not the real world case/scenario right now, especially with Black Friday coming...I would go with the 13 anytime
The Satellite feature is my favourite part of the iPhone line up
Aside from the (suddenly) struggling battery life of the 13 on ios 16, I still LOVE using the 13, since day 1 I’ve never felt like I was truly missing out on any important features (including those of the pro lineups) and that narrative remains true for the 14 lineup!!

I’m thinking of upgrading from my Samsung s20 and I’m undecided if I want to get a 13 or 14. When comparing specs they seem basically identical besides a few minor improvements. I may shell out the extra money for a 14 pro but if I don’t I’ll likely purchase the 13 and save the $100 but that satellite feature sounds cool.

The Iphone in general does have features that other brands cannot successfully imitate. The camera itself is already notable. Alongside with the security features, Apple really does is one of the best when it comes to protecting their users information and data due to strong restrictions.

Heyy thanks for the information, Thank you for the suggestion too, yes having a bigger screen is very useful which is my favorite feature of the new Ipone, having a bigger screen is definitely a plus in the iphone 14 plus, haha pun unintended. The Iphone 14 base is also a great option, it gets the job done and it has the new safety features of the Iphone 14. And with the new IOS 16, the Iphone 14 is really capable even if you choose the non pro models

Although the 14 and the 13 are virtually the same phone I think paying the extra 100 isn’t too bad considering the new safety features especially when a trade in with your current phone can be made. In general the iPhone is sleek and aesthetically pleasing which is nice. I’m really needing an upgrade as I still have the iPhone 8 😅

I just want to highlight three upgrades on the iPhone 14. First, is the Crash Detection. As a student who is studying outside my hometown, miles away, I travel alone so I think this features enables me to contact my family without actually using the phone whenever I’m in danger while traveling. Second is the steady video mode. I am fond of taking videos because I somehow aspire to become a good videographer. And lastly, the all-day battery life. This what I always look for a phone but always out of budget. I’m still using my iPhone 5s, and its battery life is dying. A lot of times I get out of battery outside and there’s no way I could recharge it. However, as what the video implies that better to opt for iPhone 13 and save $100 than to upgrade to iPhone 14. They’re almost identical in every features they have except for the newly added on the iPhone 14. It’s still the good update on the features tho. But either way, it’s iPhone! Always gives you everything you need for a smartphone.

I stumbled on your channel with your last video on the watches and I have to say i really appreciate your unbiased and super detailed reviews. It definitely has given me better insight as I’ve been looking to get a new watch and iPhone. Hands down my favorite feature on iPhones has been the cameras. Since my se 2016 I’ve used my iPhone to take amazing photos and enter some competitions. I loved my iPhone 12 Pro Max the cameras on it were so good but since it was stolen a few months ago I’ve been using my broken XR and it’s been a challenge only having one lens that’s also cracked lol. But the new crash detection sounds like a really awesome feature, as someone who does doordash and Uber eats delivery that’s such a nice feature to have for the just in case situations.

So talking to the online Apple rep as long as you have crash detection on your watch you don't really need it on the 14 so if you have a 13 and have a series 8 watch then you'll be fine

Hi Divon! I am Maria and here are the specs that really caught my attention. Before anything else I would like to say thank you for making this video given that I have no means of affording any of the two phones that you have reviewed the video is still very much informative and can really help people choose which phone to buy. Anyways here are three things that really piqued my attention. First is of course the phones ability to take amazing photos and as someone who loves photography this feature is really good. Next is the two safety features, as someone who goes home late due to work(since i am a working student) this feature would really help me feel at ease and be more secured when commuting. Tho i hope that hopefully by next year it’s satellite feature will also cover our country. Lastly is its stabilization when it comes to recording videos. As a college student who took up tourism management this feature will surely help me film my school projects since my course really requires a lot of videography projects. This will be all thank you dion!

been an android fangirl since my very first phone, but I gotta say the new dynamic island is a smart move in integrating software functions around the pill/notch. since our main focus is on the iphone 14, definitely the new safety and emergency feature is a well thought function for everyone!
Good video but if you travel quite a lot the 13 is the better deal as the physical sim is just so much easier to swap in and out when you get to a new location I think Apple jumped the gun on this one I keeping my iPhone 13 for that reason alone

@1660th - This might be an unpopular opinion but I might go with the iPhone 14 or even the Plus model. Even though they have the same form factor and chip as the iPhone 13. The 14 still has the better battery life and more RAM (4GB on 13 vs 6GB on the 14).
